From war-torn Afghanistan and
National's new Banks
Peninsula MP Vanessa
Weenink was once an
army medic serving
in hot spots like
Afghanistan and East
Timor. She was also a
Labour Party member
before switching
political allegiances.
She talks to reporter
OVERSEAS military service
is difficult to balance with
motherhood, but Vanessa
Weenink says it was worth it to
serve her country.
“It was a huge sacrifice to
make,” she said.
As a medical officer, Weenink
achieved the rank of major when
she was called up to serve two
tours in Afghanistan and one
tour in East Timor from 2005 to
2007.
“I’ve always wanted to serve
my country.”
Weenink said she could cope
with being away from her 6
month old son with the understanding
she was caring for other
vulnerable children in need.
In the middle of her second
Afghanistan tour Weenink was
stationed at the New Zealand
base in Bamyan province. While
Mad on Meth - How New
Zealand got hooked on P
by Benedict Collins
Why cook at home when you can order in?
Only 50 years ago, pure methamphetamine was legally prescribed in
New Zealand to anyone looking for a boost. But it wasn’t long before P
was rebranded as the most dangerous and destructive drug in the world -
this quality.
Our Price: $79.95m2
(that’s $21.85m2)
and New Zealanders cemented as among its biggest users.
With dry wit and biting insight, journalist Benedict Collins takes us inside the evolution
of meth in New Zealand. From ram raids for pseudoephedrine to our own cooks and
gangs ‘breaking bad’, a visit to the Golden Triangle of meth production in South-East Asia,
multimillion-dollar busts, and a moral panic that seeded a meth-testing scandal. All set
the stage for unthinkable crimes and drug-fuelled mania, but also serviced a hidden world
of white-collar users - and cemented New Zealand’s reputation as among the biggest meth
consumers in the world.
How did tough on crime become dumb on drugs? And what does a solution to Pure
addiction look like?
The Frozen River
by Ariel Lawhon
A gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned
18th-century midwife who investigates a shocking murder that unhinges her small
community.
Maine, 1789: The Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice. Martha Ballard is
summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As the local midwife and
healer, Martha is good at keeping secrets. Her diary is a record of every birth and death,
every murder and debacle that unfolds in the town of Hallowell. In that diary she also
documented the details of an alleged rape that occurred four months earlier. Now, one of
the men accused of that heinous attack has been found dead in the ice.
While Martha is certain she knows what happened the night of the assault, she suspects
that the two crimes are linked, and that there is more to both cases than meets the eye.
Over the course of one long, hard winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices
mount, Martha’s diary lands at the center of the scandal and threatens to tear both her
family and her community apart.
Ariel Lawhon brings to life a brave and compassionate unsung heroine who refused to
accept anything less than justice on behalf of those no one else would protect. The Frozen
River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story of a remarkable woman who had the courage to
take a stand, and in the process wrote herself into American history.
FULFILLING: Vanessa Weenink (left) with Michling Werder
and Paula Dacey during her second tour in Afghanistan.
in a convoy on her way to a
clinic near Bamyan city, one of
the vehicles hit an improvised
explosive device (IED).
The New Zealand soldiers
sprang into action, suspecting
they were about to be ambushed.
Luckily nothing happened and
there were no injuries caused by
the IED.
“It really made me realise that
I was willing to do anything that
was necessary to protect the
people around me.”
night which was extended to 396
after special votes were counted.
“I’ll never forget that. That was
a very special moment.”
Weenink said the surgery
would have changed the girl’s
fortunes, at the time, as a physical
deformity like a cleft lip could
be a mark against you in
Afghanistan.
In East Timor, Weenink remembers
fondly when the Australian
Navy bought her medical
team a “delicious” dinner after
helping to contain a norovirus
outbreak on one of their ships.
