Weenink was once an
army medic serving
in hot spots like
Afghanistan and East
Timor. She was also a
Labour Party member
before switching
political allegiances.
She talks to reporter

OVERSEAS military service
is difficult to balance with
motherhood, but Vanessa
Weenink says it was worth it to
serve her country.
“It was a huge sacrifice to
make,” she said.
As a medical officer, Weenink
achieved the rank of major when
she was called up to serve two
tours in Afghanistan and one
tour in East Timor from 2005 to
2007.
“I’ve always wanted to serve
my country.”
Weenink said she could cope
with being away from her 6
month old son with the understanding
she was caring for other
vulnerable children in need.
In the middle of her second
Afghanistan tour Weenink was
stationed at the New Zealand
base in Bamyan province. While

The New Zealand soldiers
sprang into action, suspecting
they were about to be ambushed.
Luckily nothing happened and
there were no injuries caused by

was necessary to protect the
