The play generated great interest on publication in
December 1890, but Norwegian reviewers were unsure
and confused about the enigmatic figure of Hedda. Hedda
Tesman is the daughter of General Gabler, who is now
dead and has left her no fortune. She marries Jørgen
Tesman, but soon feels dislike for her husband. ”Oh the
ridiculous and the low, it lays like a curse on everything
I touch.” (Hedda Tesman, fourth act.)
