INSCRIBED: Till min käre vän PO (”To my dear friend PO
- in other hand) SIGNED by Thomas Mann.
«Lotte in Weimar: The beloved returns» is Thomas Mann’s
tribute to Johan Wolfgang von Goethe. In September
1816, Charlotte Kestner comes to Weimar. She hopes to
meet Goethe, who was the flame of her youth. 44 years
earlier, Goethe had made Charlotte immortal by writing
her - in the role of Lotte - into the novel The Sufferings of
Young Werther. The book was published in 1939 and was
written when Mann [1875–1955] was in exile in the USA,
not as a continuation of Goethe’s novel, but more in the
form of a fictional nachspiel to it. Thomas Mann received
the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929.
