Building the foundations of success Originally known as Anderson, and founded in Belfast by David Anderson in 1854, the company moved to Trafford Park in Manchester in 1923 as the world-renowned industrial park was first being developed. When Icopal acquired the business in 1990, it built on the company’s heritage to spearhead innovation, drive standards across the industry and support roofing professionals with highperformance products and solutions backed by an extensive range of technical support and services. This goes beyond delivering reliable products and leading technical support, extending to BMI Icopal’s work with the Intelligent Membrane Association since its inception in the mid-90s. Setting the standard for quality Continuous innovation has played a key role in BMI Icopal’s century of success. As well as developing the systems and support that underpins performance, safety and sustainability have also been key focusses for the business. Pioneering solvent-free installation has improved safety on site, while the creation of de-polluting membranes such as Noxite means that flat roof systems can now play an active role in the sustainability of the built environment. The innovative material, which actively removes harmful nitrogen oxides from the immediate environment, is already in use on buildings across the country, including on retail stores such as John Lewis in Kingston upon Thames. With BMI Icopal’s 33,000sqm production site in Manchester playing a critical role in the company’s success to date, it’s also pivotal in its future. In recent years, significant investment has been made to create a production facility that is fit for the future. That’s involved transforming spaces to accommodate today’s requirements, through to creating a state-of-art production line.
