Iconic Kingswood
back in the game
IT WAS the VIP car of
Commonwealth Games in
Christchurch.
And now one of the
distinctive Holden Kingwoods
will be part of the Santa Parade
in New Brighton on Saturday.
The Kingswood is the New
Brighton Museum’s showpiece
in the parade, which starts at
10.30am.
Museum president Wayne
Hawker said the vehicle is “the
jewel in their crown”.
“After the games, the
Kingswoods were sold off. This
particular vehicle was bought
by the Freakish family and has
been owned by the same family
ever since.
set to finish
next week
• By Sasha Watson
THE FINAL upgrades to the
intersection of Marshland, Briggs
and Lake Terrace Rds are under
to be finished by the end of the
week.
Night work began on Sunday
and will last the week, while
the traffic signals will be
commissioned next week.
Said city
council transport
operations
manager Stephen
Wright:
“We are
aiming to
have all the
civil works
completed by
the end of this
week (subject to
weather).
“Work remaining includes
Stephen
Wright
upgrades to the traffic signals,
finishing footpaths, installing
Improvements completed so far
A Cartoonist’s Life
by Mason Ball
The long-awaited biography of cartoonist Murray Ball, creator of Footrot
Flats In Murray Ball: A Cartoonist’s Life, Murray’s son Mason Ball shares
all the hits and misses and long years of hard graft that went into what
would become the wildly successful creative enterprise: Footrot Flats.
Ferrymead
From his unique viewpoint and with candid honesty, Mason reveals the
real-life backstory to Murray’s most iconic characters and themes, telling
the story of the man - and father - who could see the quirks of human
nature and capture them with the stroke of a pen. Richly illustrated
with family photos and cartoons by the bloke who brought us that most
lovable character, the Dog.
The Woman in Me
by Britney Spears
The Woman in Me is a brave and astonishingly moving story about
freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope. In June 2021, the
whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The
impact of sharing her voice her truth was undeniable, and it changed
the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in
Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey and the strength at
the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history. Written
with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s grou¬ndbreaking book
illuminates the enduring power of music and love and the importance of
a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.
• From page 1
The need for safety
improvements followed a total
of 36 crashes at the intersection
between 2010 and 2019, which
included 12 injury crashes with
four people being seriously
injured.
The main causes of the crashes
have been red light running,
right-turning traffic failing to
give way and right-angle
crashes.
Wright said the city council
hasn’t received any formal
feedback about the construction
work as yet.
“We have communicated with
local residents before and during
the construction works to ensure
they retain access to their homes
and are notified of any work
late in the evening/through the
night.
“We’ve provided start
works notices (SWNs) and a
construction update to explain
what the work involves, and what
the impacts will be throughout
construction.”
The project will cost
approximately $660,000 and
is being funded through the
Acceleration Facility.
The purpose of this fund is to
BIG CHANGES are getting
underway for New Brighton.
The former Westpac building
is currently being demolished to
make way for a new pedestrian
walkway, with the hope of
bringing more foot traffic into
the mall.
Coastal Ward city councillor
Celeste Donovan said the
building was purchased by the
city council as part of the Oram
Ave extension
project, and was
going to schedule.
“It’s going
to create a
pedestrian
corridor into the
mall. And what
that means is Celeste
that you’ll have Donovan
more people
coming in to the mall and as
the rest of the development goes
our museum’s display will be
painted on to door magnets,”
said Hawker.
The museum’s Commonwealth
Games display will run from
January 13-28 and will feature
the Kingswood alongside a log
ahead, hopefully that’s starting
next year, then you’re going to
see quite a different pedestrian
book that logs where each car
went and with whom at the
games.
Said museum secretary
Peg Butterfield: “We asked
for . . . memorabilia from the
Commonwealth Games in
mall, which is going to be pretty
fantastic.”
Donovan said once completed,
1974, and now we have a great
collection, so we promise an
amazing display.”
Also on display will be a
25-pound gun used for the 21
Royal Salutes when the Queen
came to Christchurch and
buildings and the existing spaces
being put to better use.
“Mid to late next year, I think
you should see some quite
significant transformation. So
it’s just the beginning. But I
think you’re going to see what
I think is the next chapter of
the New Brighton Mall being
a destination for the rest of the
city, and it’ll be a great place for
locals to visit as it already is.”
She said they will look to
activate the site early next year
with landscaping and murals.
Further design work for the
mall is under way with plans
scheduled to go to community
consultation next year.
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE TEAM AT
HOUSE OF TRAVEL MERIVALE-SHIRLEY
YOUR LOCAL TRAVEL EXPERTS
BREAKING NEWS
We are excited to announce that we are re-opening our House of Travel
Shirley store on the 5th of February in a new location: 436 Prestons Road,
Marshland (near the Black & White Coffee shop). So, please pop in to see
us and meet our new consultants. We can’t wait to be back, and we wish
you all a very Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.
Nicky, Lisa and team
HOUSE OF TRAVEL MERIVALE AND HOUSE OF TRAVEL PRESTONS
At House of Travel nationwide we have had a very busy year, and we are back to 2019 levels
of enquiry and more New Zealanders than ever are keen to venture abroad and explore
new destinations. You can explore the latest deals via our House of Travel website and
join up to receive our weekly email specials and inspiration. Airlines and other suppliers
are running at capacity, and this has meant prices have remained on the high side and
availability can often be very stretched and limited. Our advice is that if you have a holiday
on the horizon but have not booked yet then please get in touch as soon as possible.
HERE ARE SOME HOT TIPS FOR BOOKING TRAVEL...
• Book as early as you can especially if you are travelling at peak times, such as
school holidays, Christmas, Easter OR high season to Europe (June, July, August).
For school holidays, to ensure you get the resort you want we recommend you
book about one year ahead.
• Bring us your ideas – write down your wish list or put together a spreadsheet.
It is best to give us the big picture of your holiday so we can maximize the airfares
and ensure the holiday is planned in a logistical manner to avoid back tracking and
unnecessary costs.
• Don’t panic if you see “last room” or “limited space” on a website. Often suppliers
like hotels will spread their inventory so it is not often a true indication of real
availability.
• We have suppliers that we use around the world that are tried, tested, and trusted.
Please be careful with booking direct. In some situations, if the business did not
honour your payments OR go into liquidation, unless they are NZ registered
businesses then you may not be covered by the NZ Consumer Guarantee Act.
• Many online agents are literally this – online. So, that means they do not have an
office you can pop into NOR do you really have an oversight to their reliability
and support.
• We are a one stop shop travel provider– we can literally book almost anything
for you so just ask and we will do our best to source everything you need.
• Make an appointment to come in and sit down with one of our experienced
team – face to face chats are much better than an email and we can ask
questions that help with our responses.
• Bring in your passports, even if they are not valid. Having the correct spelling
of names is crucial.
Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
