Roo bounces back after
going missing from ute
• By Pierre Nixon
WHEN A family’s puppy
vanished from the back of their
ute as they drove to walk him
in a forest area they feared the
worst.
But a Christmas miracle
came early for the Nichol
family from West Melton.
Their 9-month-old jack russell,
Ruger – affectionately known
as Roo – was found alive and
completely unscathed 24 hours
after he tumbled from the
vehicle.
The pup’s owner Sharon
Nichol said her two teenage
children and her father were
preparing to take Roo on a
walk around the Hanmer
Heritage Forest.
Nichol said as the trio were
leaving, her son Cam carefully
tied Roo to a clip on the back of
her father’s Hilux.
But when they arrived at
the heritage park, Roo was
nowhere to be seen.
Cam took to social media
to alert the local community,
hopeful someone would come
across Roo.
Connor’s
convicted
killer
denied
parole
• By Sam Sherwood
ONE OF the men convicted
of killing teenager Connor
Whitehead at a party has
been declined parole at his
first appearance before the
board.
The 16-year-old
was shot dead
in Casebrook
on November 5,
2021.
In May, Daniel
Nelson Sparks
and Joshua David
Craig Smith were
found not guilty
of murder but
guilty of manslaughter.
Connor
Whitehead
Smith, who fired the fatal shot,
was jailed for seven years. Sparks
was jailed for six years and three
months.
On Tuesday, Sparks appeared
before the Parole Board. A
spokesman confirmed he was
declined parole and the full
hearing decision would be
available in “due course”.
Whitehead was an innocent
bystander when he was shot dead
at a party.
McEwan celebrated his 70th
birthday in style, playing
72 holes of golf in a day at
Canterbury charities.
McEwan estimated over
$30,000 had been raised so
far with donations still rolling
in. The Canterbury Neonatal
Unit Trust Fund, set up by
McEwan and his wife Julie 32
The former Canterbury
Tuesday was a “fantastic day”.
“It was pleasing to be able
to celebrate this and raise
money towards a good cause,”
he said.
McEwan shot 75 in his first
round and continued that form
throughout the day, shooting 75
again in the second, 78 in the
third and 75 in the fourth.
He achieved a personal goal
to score in the 70s on each full
Their actions led to the “worst
At trial, the Crown alleged
McEwan rated his best shot of
the day as his second on the fifth
hole of the final round, where he
got to “within about two feet of
the flag”.
“Easy tap-in for birdie, my
caddy told me I’d been short the
last three rounds on this hole
so should try the seven-iron for
this one.
“Definitely a case of caddy’s
influence.”
McEwan finished about 6pm,
12 hours after teeing off, and
celebrated with his family.
“We had a good party, my
Christmas initiative helps connect
• By Pierre Nixon
CHRISTMAS HASN’T been the
same for Steph Beattie since her
mother Nicki Beattie died.
After a lengthy battle with
triple-negative breast cancer,
Nicki died surrounded by her
family in August 2021.
Since then, Beattie’s Christmas,
which was normally filled with
bubbles, dancing, and music, has
been clouded by the grief of losing
her mother.
“People think that Christmas is
a really happy time for everyone,
and it can be, but it’s also a super
sensitive time for those who have
lost loved ones,” she said.
Beattie was 21 when her mother
died, and at the time, New
Zealand was in lockdown due to
the Covid-19 Delta outbreak.
“It was a hard journey and not
something that I ever thought I
would go through, and lockdown
was mingled in with all that,
which made it difficult because
we couldn’t see anyone.”
Last Christmas Eve, Beattie was
talking to friends and family about
how she was struggling with not
having her mother around during
the holiday season.
She told friends she wanted
to find someone who could
“support” her through the hard
transition.
That is when Beattie was
introduced to the founder of the
GRIEF: The Christmas Connection offers people like Steph Beattie the chance to write messages to their loved ones on
wooden Christmas decorations that are then burned. Below – Beattie was 21 when her mum Nicki Beattie died in 2021.
Christmas Connection initiative,
Sarah Robb.
Life coach Robb is very familiar
with the grief that the holiday
season can bring for those who
have lost loved ones.
When Robb was 20, her father
died in a sudden accident. Six
years later, her mother died from
a brain aneurysm.
That’s what sparked Robb’s
idea to create the Christmas Connection,
an initiative that helps
people remember their deceased
loved ones around the holiday
season.
“I was having this thought
with my friend one day, and I
used to write to my mum quite
a lot when I was missing her at
Christmas, and she said to me,
why don’t we create an initiative
that can help other people as
well?” Robb said.
The Christmas Connection
offers people the chance to write
messages to their passed loved
ones on a wooden Christmas
decoration, which is then placed
on a wooden tree and displayed
throughout December.
“The reason that it’s on a piece
of wood is that in the days leading
up to Christmas, I burn all
the messages on the wood,” Robb
said.
“And that’s because my kind of
philosophy is that nothing can be
destroyed, it can only be transformed
into something else.”
This Christmas is the first
year Beattie is taking part in the
Christmas Connection.
For Beattie, it’s a chance to
remember her mum but also to
help manage the grief the holiday
season brings.
“There’s a lot to be gained from
reflection and honouring those
who have gone and connecting
with other people that have been
through the same experience,”
she said.
“It makes you feel less alone
and less isolated.”
Beattie’s mother, a doctor of
30 years, started writing a book
upon her cancer diagnosis, titled
Just What The Doctor Didn’t
Order.
Beattie has vowed to complete
the book as part of her
A MOTHER is urging parents to
give passwords to their children
so they know what to do if they
are approached by a stranger.
It comes after her 8-year-old
daughter said she was approached
by a man after she left
school for home. She felt a hand
tap her on the shoulder from
behind.
She turned and saw a stranger
who said her parents had asked
him to pick her up from school.
The incident happened about
3pm on December 12 near Norman
Kirk Memorial Pool on
Oxford St, Lyttelton. The girl attends
the nearby primary school.
“I said, ‘what’s the password,’
and I was backing up at the same
time. I didn’t know him. My
parents wouldn’t send someone
to pick me up,” the girl told The
Star.
The girl said he replied: “I’m
the best.”
She then ran off. “I turned and
I spinned my little legs up the
hill.” She felt “scared, nervous,
worried”.
When her daughter told her
what had happened, the mother
Her mother is relieved they set
up a password system when her
daughter started school.
Alert to the possible danger,
the girl knew to run when the
stranger failed to say the password.
Police would not say if any
suspects had been identified.
The girl described the man
as having olive skin, European,
aged in his 30s or 40s, about
1.9m tall, slim, with dark hair
and wearing a black jumper and
dark blue jeans. He may have
had a septum (nose) piercing.
The girl said the man was
standing in front of a white van,
but she is unsure if this belonged
to him.
The mother strongly
recommends parents have a
children and set up passwords
so they can check if an adult
Not all peaches
and cream for
cocaine importer
• By Emily Moorhouse
A 78-YEAR-OLD former adult
entertainment figure has been
jailed for eight years and six
months for smuggling liquid
cocaine into New Zealand.
Fritz Petersen, a former director
of adult “megastore” Peaches
and Cream, which specialises
in the sale of sex toys and other
related items, was found guilty of
importing 718 grams of cocaine
into the country.
He was caught after Customs
intercepted a case containing
two bottles of wine at the New
Zealand border.
Petersen, who reportedly
opened the first of the Peaches
and Cream sex shops about 30
years ago, was sentenced in the
district court last week.
The facts on which he was
found guilty at trial in October
stated on March 23, 2021, Petersen
arranged for the package to
be sent from Germany to Alyse
Wilson’s home in Christchurch.
Wilson, 27, stood trial alongside
Petersen but was acquitted
on a charge of importing cocaine.
Customs contacted Wilson to
advise her of a package that was
waiting for her at the international
mail centre in Auckland
and said it would be dispatched
once she had made a payment.
On March 27, an unknown
person attempted to pay for the
package using a Prezzy card but
was unsuccessful.
Two days later, Customs
inspected the package and
discovered a case containing two
bottles of wine.
Tests carried out revealed the
bottles contained 718g of liquid
cocaine, with a purity of 43 per
cent.
Police then launched an investigation
dubbed Operation Vino
and carried out a controlled
delivery to Wilson’s address on
April 7 of that year.
Within 15 minutes, Petersen
arrived at Wilson’s, then left moments
later with the package.
Police searched his Redwood
home and found the wine bottles
in the fridge, as well as around
50g of cocaine and $11,000 in
cash.
Petersen was arrested and
faced a further charge of failing
to give the passcode to his phone
when requested by police. On
this charge, he was convicted
and discharged.
This report was produced by Open
Justice – Te Pātītī, a Public
Interest Journalism initiative
funded by NZ on Air
Wilson told police Petersen
had arranged the delivery of the
package and she had no idea it
contained drugs.
However, Petersen denied this,
claiming he thought the bottles
contained wine.
At the sentencing hearing,
Crown prosecutor William Taffs
argued a starting point of at
least 11 years’ imprisonment was
appropriate and that Petersen
should not get credit for remorse
as he continued to deny the offending.
Defence lawyer Phillip Allan
submitted his client was entitled
to a discount for his age as he
has health concerns and prison
would not be easy for him.
While Allan accepted Petersen
continued to deny the offending,
he said he had been out of trouble
for an “awfully long time” as
his last conviction was in the 90s
and was not drug-related.
Judge David Ruth acknowledged
Petersen’s older age but
said unlike in most cases, the
offending had happened recently
and wasn’t of a historical nature.
“You, at a mature age, must
have known that if you were
caught and convicted, a term of
imprisonment must have been the
risk that you knowingly took.”
Petersen had spent time on
bail while awaiting trial, but
because he did not have many
restrictions imposed, the judge
only allowed a limited discount.
Judge Ruth jailed Petersen for
eight years and six months and
ordered forfeiture of the $11,000
and destruction of the drugs.
As Petersen was taken into
custody, one of his supporters
kicked the seat in front of him
in the public gallery and began
swearing at court security staff.
Traffic management 75%
of Santa parade’s budget
• By Polly Nichols
COMMUNITY groups are
spending thousands of dollars
on traffic management for
Santa parades and relying on
donors and sponsors to cover
budget shortfalls.
Depending on the size of the
event, they must pay companies
for traffic controllers, road
cones and signage for family
Christmas festivities to comply
with road regulations.
New Brighton Project coordinator
Martha Baxendell
said traffic management for
the not-for-profit organisation’s
parade had jumped from
$874 in 2014 to more than
$8000 this year.
She said it accounted for
about 75 per cent of the Santa
parade’s budget.
“I think at the time, we were
just like ‘well, we haven’t got a
choice. We still just gotta pay
it. So we’re just gonna get on
with it’,” she said.
Baxendell said the New
Brighton Project was facing a
$2000 budget shortfall until a
different traffic management
company stepped in to help
cover remaining costs.
TEN-FOLD INCREASE: Traffic management for the New Brighton Seaside Santa
Parade jumped from $874 in 2014 to more than $8000 this year.
The donor has now offered
to provide traffic management
for free next year.
Christchurch’s Christmas
Show Parade was held at
the Canterbury A&P Showgrounds
but organisers were
still spending $20,000 on traffic
management because the
event affected the normal use
of local roads.
The money also covered
the costs of manufacturing
event signage and transporting
floats from New Brighton
to the showgrounds at a speed
of just 20km/h.
City council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said legislative changes
were partly to blame for the
price hikes.
“We are unable to surmise
why costs from TTM (temporary
traffic management)
companies have risen, however
there is a growing awareness
of risk due to changes in
legislation within the last eight
years which require organisers
to make sure that they take
reasonably practicable steps
to not cause harm or injury
to anyone as a result of their
activities,” he said.
New Zealand Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi road
works safety programme
director Ryan Cooney said
traffic management costs
depended on the scale of the
event.
“If an event does not
change the normal operating
conditions of the road,
temporary traffic management
is likely to be cheaper,” he said.
Probe into
Chch mum’s
death in
detention
• By Anna Leask
THE DEATH of former
Christchurch woman at an Australian
detention centre is under
scrutiny by a senior New South
Wales coroner.
Leah Porter, 53, was found
dead in her room in May 2022 at
Villawood Immigration Detention
Centre in Sydney.
Porter’s visa had been
cancelled after she served a
12-month prison sentence for
assaulting a police officer.
The mother of two was originally
from Christchurch but she
had lived in Australia for more
than a decade.
It is thought Porter took her
own life as she awaited deportation
to New Zealand.
Her family told media after
her death that she “should never
have been in detention”– and
her mental illness became worse
when she didn’t take her prescription
medication.
9 News in Australia reported
there were conflicting reports as
to whether Porter had refused to
take her medication – or denied
access to it.
– NZ Herald
• From page 1
The group then retraced their
journey on bike and on foot.
There was no sign of the small
pooch and the family was devastated.
“It was just a really horrible situation,
I just felt sick and because
I’m still in Christchurch working,
getting through the last of my
work before Christmas, I just felt
helpless, like I just couldn’t do
anything,” Nichol said.
Then, when it felt like all hope
was fading, Sharon received a
message, suggesting she contact
Don Schwass, who runs the Nelson
search dog/tracking page.
Schwass, who has a background
in tracking from 30
years of search and rescue land
tracking experience, first began
helping people find lost dogs 20
years ago.
“He rang me and asked me to
send him a pin drop of the start
and finish points of the journey
that they took in the Hilux, and
he came back to me this morning
with an idea of where Roo would
most likely be found,” Nichol
said.
“Part of his theory was Roo was
unlikely to be in the area of the
Hanmer Springs Village, based on
the fact that no one had seen him.”
Sharon’s father Gary Rule, from
Hamner, also played a major part
in finding the young pup.
‘I’m just massively relieved’
RECOVERY: Roo resting after his ordeal. Above – master
tracker Don Schwass helped the family find their dog.
“My dad, in an absolute piece
of brilliance, decided to contact
the local police officer to see if
they had any camera footage of
the road where they were travelling
yesterday morning – and
they found footage of the truck
with the dog on it and without
the dog.”
The CCTV footage helped
narrow down the search to a few
hundred metres.
It was then, after 24 anxious
hours, Cam found Roo at Dog
Stream Reserve under a log, inside
the Hanmer Heritage Forest.
“It was probably a 60 or 70km
trip and he would have landed
on the road but he’s literally got
nothing, no injuries, no scars or
anything, he was just a little bit
hungry,” she said.
She described how she felt
when she heard Roo had survived.
“You know that feeling when
you have a near miss in your
car and it’s like your body is just
flooded with adrenaline and
relief.
“(I’m) just massively relieved,
so proud of my dad and both
of my kids, you know, they just
didn’t give up looking for him.”
Orchard remembers quake victims
• By Dylan Smits
A LONG-AWAITED memorial
orchard for two Lyttelton men
who died in the February 22,
2011 earthquake is finally under
way.
Volunteers have been planting
apple trees over the past two
Sundays at the orchard on the
corner of Somes Rd and Norton
Cl.
Owen
Wright was
in Woolston
when the 6.3
magnitude
earthquake
struck.
Owen Wright
He drove
other stranded
Lyttelton residents
up the Bridle Path in his
vehicle, before setting off on foot
to get home on the other side of
the hill.
He was on the Major Hornbrook
track, 10
minutes from his
Norton Cl home
when boulders
loosened by an
aftershock struck
him.
His mother,
Faith Wright,
said the family is
Ian Foldesi
TRIBUTE: An orchard is being planted by volunteers in memory of Owen Wright and Ian
Foldesi who died in the February 22, 2011 earthquake.
pleased the orchard is underway.
“I’m happy that they are doing
the memorial orchard for two
people who died on the day of
the earthquakes.”
Ian Foldesi was walking the
Stan Helms track when the
earthquake triggered a rockslide
that swept across the track and
carried him 25 metres down a
cliff face. His body was found by
the eldest of his three daughters,
Sarah.
The original idea for the
memorial orchard was
inspired by the fruit trees,
owned by Owen Wright, already
on the site.
The land has passed through
various owners since it was red
zoned after the earthquakes.
Now the land is owned by
the city council and came
under the management of
Georgina Stanley, the Smith
Street Community Farm
manager, last month.
Stanley and her team have
stepped up to develop the
orchard after five years of the
site lacking management which
halted progress.
“We manage a 1ha urban
farm in Linwood, so we’ve got a
really good team who over the
last three years have got a lot of
experience.”
She believes the steep angle of
the site was a factor in why no
one was willing to develop the
orchard until now.
Stanley said it feels good to
fulfil the hopes of the families for
a memorial orchard after many
years.
“Spaces created by the
community have a special kind
of whimsy. They’re not the usual
big, monumental places. They
have a warmth to them.”
Using the memorial orchard to
help increase local food security
in case of a disaster is a focus for
Stanley.
“Lyttelton being isolated on the
other side of the hill, they end up
not having a lot of flat land, so
fruit trees make a lot of sense.”
Stanley plans to extend the
orchard by about 20 fruit trees
every year, but she is keeping in
mind community requests to
maintain enough green space at
the site for recreation.
Home detention for killer ‘beyond belief’
Mark Nagel took a life of a
loving father and finished with a
high five with one of his mates.
Yet Justice Dunningham
acknowledged he will be “well
supported” on home detention.
This decision is beyond belief
and was opposed by the Crown.
I am at an absolute loss as to why
this killer was given home detention.
People on fraud charges
have been given more jail
time than this disgusting man.
The judge’s decision is shameful.
The killer should be deported.
-J Morgan
Five months home detention
for killing an innocent man
and just walking away is not
what I would call justice. He
should have got an Americanstyle
life imprisonment with no
possibility of parole. Nagel is not
the sort of person we want on
our streets. When his sentence
ends he should be deported back
to South Africa.
-Michael J Brathwaite
I think it’s an absolute joke
that he has been let out if prison.
He killed an innocent person
he should be serving 10 years at
least and be deported afterwards
a rapist received two years in jail
I’m not saying one crime is
any more or any less than the
died the punishment should be
harsher.
A smack on the hand and a
OPINION
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
City’s assets: How can we decide
if we don’t hear from the public?
The debate over the
future of Christchurch’s
public assets continues.
Today city councillor
and a director of
city council owned
Christchurch City
Holdings Ltd Sam
MacDonald
says the
people of
Christchurch
have been
denied the
chance to
have their say on how
to maximise the value
of the city’s assets
How did the discussion
around maximising the longterm
value from Christchurch’s
assets become about ‘asset sales’?
Yes, asset sales make for
emotive headlines and slogans.
But selling assets had little to
do with what was, in fact, a
proposal to grow the city’s assets,
secure investment to enable our
companies to grow, start to pay
down debt and minimise rates
demands.
Where did all the confusion
come from and what actually
happened here?
In early 2022, council decided
that, for the first time in its history,
Christchurch City Holdings
Ltd (CCHL), the ratepayerowned
investment company,
should be reviewed. This review
was long overdue. This is in stark
contrast to previous adhoc council
decisions regarding CCHL,
for example you may recall in the
early 2000’s when Garry Moore
was the mayor, they attempted
to sell off 49 per cent of the Lyttleton
Port to Hong Kong-based
Hutchison Port Holdings.
CCHL owns Lyttelton Port,
Enable, EcoCentral, CityCare
and majority shares in Orion
and Christchurch Airport. The
combined value of these assets
is close to $6 billion and CCHL
as the parent company holds
$2.3 billion of debt. Council
gets an annual dividend from
these companies’ profits which is
reused to offset rates.
Christchurch is fortunate
to have these companies as to
meet steadily rising cost we can
either cut costs, reduce services,
increase rates, borrow money or
maximise the financial contribution
from CCHL. For context,
council is working through its
10 year Long Term Plan, and the
draft rates increase is hovering
around 13 per cent for next year.
This year, CCHL anticipates
to pay around $50 million in
dividends to council but, with
volatility and borrowing costs,
this is expected to drop to $33
million in 2024.
Some people have been quick
to point to the new stadium as
the primary driver, but this is
incorrect. We have separated
out the cost of the stadium for
transparency – of the 13 per cent
draft rates increase, the stadium
is around 3 per cent.
As part of the council’s review,
it was found CCHL could be
generating significantly more
through higher, more stable dividend
flows. Maximising contributions
from the city’s assets was
the basis of the recommendation
last week.
There are three questions
people have asked me this week
which I think are useful to
consider:
“What has CCHL done and
identified?”
At council’s instruction,
CCHL reviewed each of the city’s
six subsidiaries and considered
their performance and contribution
to the city.
CCHL, including through an
independent and comprehensive
report, identified the returns
back to council were much lower
than they should be.
“What was proposed and what
did council decide?”
There’s been general acceptance
that council’s assets are not
delivering enough value to the
city.
CCHL presented two draft
options to council and discarded
another two.
The two discarded options
were the status quo and the two
options presented to council
were called the Enhanced Status
Quo and the Active Portfolio
Manager.
Briefly, the Enhanced Status
Quo option would see a reduction
in investment in the city’s
companies, a push for improvement
and a more commercial approach
from under performing
businesses, like Lyttelton Port.
This option would see a
projected $220 million uplift in
dividends over the next decade –
that averages about 4 per cent off
our rates each year.
The Active Portfolio Manager
option – the option recommended
by CCHL – would ensure the
level of ratepayer investment in
city assets would not drop below
what it is now. The ability to attract
growth capital from other
investors would enable the companies
to grow, for debt to start
to be paid down and for CCHL
to invest in new assets that might
better serve the city’s changing
needs.
An endowment fund would
be set up allowing CCHL to
invest in new opportunities. This
scenario would have enabled
dividends to the city to increase
by up to $450 million over the 10
year plan. This scenario would
have allowed a stable dividend to
council each year and potentially
reduce rates by 7.5 per cent.
A proposal to invest more in
our companies, invest in new
assets, protect the level of current
public investment, pay down
debt and start reducing rates demands
got oversimplified down
to an ‘asset sales’ slogan. This is
misinformation.
“So, what happened and what
does it mean for Christchurch?”
Last week, these proposals
came to council with a request to
go to public consultation and ask
ratepayers for their views.
Given the significance of this
decision – including ratepayers’
interests – this should have been
put to the public. Sadly, discussing
these options with the public
was voted down by 8 votes to 7.
You will not have a say.
As Mayor
Mauger said:
“These are companies
owned by
everyone. How
can we make an
informed decision
if we don’t
hear from the Phil Mauger
public? Nothing
may have changed but while we
are working to rebuild trust and
confidence in council, it seems
silly not to hear from the people
of Christchurch.”
• McDonald and fellow city
councillor Sara Templeton were
not able to take part in last
week’s vote on assets because
they are directors of CCHL.
Gale’s win ‘extra special’ ahead
of move across the Tasman
• By Diane Keenan
TEENAGE TENNIS sensation
Lucia Gale says her win in the
Canterbury Open is extra special
given she moves to Brisbane
next month to further her tennis
career.
Gale, 15, beat highly ranked
Louise Oxnevad 6-3 6-3 at the
weekend.
“It is one of the more significant
trophies I have won and
definitely more meaningful and
significant to win at home,” said
Gale, who chose to play at Wilding
Park instead of this week’s
International Tennis Federation
tournament in Papamoa.
Gale and her family, which
includes New Zealand under
12s champion Emme, 12, and
tennis-mad brother Samuel,
10, are moving across the
Tasman where they will play the
Australian circuit and be closer
to international competition.
Parents Sarah and Jamie say
it is hard to leave Christchurch
given their many supporters,
including coaches Stu Chalmers
and James Meredith, the
Cashmere Tennis Club and their
schools St Margaret’s College
and Prebbleton Primary.
“Staying together as a family
while the children pursue their
tennis dream internationally
is our priority. Brisbane
is definitely more feasible
financially than Auckland and
has the added benefit of an even
TEEN TRIUMPH: Lucia Gale beat Louise Oxnevad 6-3 6-3 to
win the Canterbury Open women’s singles.
larger pool of young players,”
said Sarah.
“We are now very familiar
with the Australian tennis
environment as the children
compete there regularly in July. ”
Lucia’s titles include Kiwi
indoors national singles and
doubles for both 14s and 16s, and
last year she won the 14s nationals
singles and doubles titles. She
was top seed in this month’s 16s
nationals, but had to withdraw
due to an abdominal strain,
while Emme won this year’s
Kiwi indoors tournament for her
age and the recent 12s national
championships where she was
also runner-up in the doubles.
Both have represented New
Zealand as juniors. Lucia spent
three months this year playing in
Korea and Kazakhstan for New
Zealand’s junior Billie Jean Cup,
and Spain.
“We missed her dreadfully. I
kept waiting for the call to say
she was homesick, but it never
came as she so enjoyed the experience,”
Sara said.
Emme played in Serbia, Montenegro
and Bulgaria on a Tennis
New Zealand organised trip.
Lucia has a big summer of
tennis ahead, playing in four
ITF tournaments – Christchurch,
Wellington, Auckland
and Brisbane – in January and
February, with a family camping
holiday to Kaiteriteri and a trip
to the Australian Tennis Open
squeezed in around the schedule.
She hopes to then play in Asia
and is seeking selection for New
Zealand’s junior Billie Jean Cup
team again.
Emme has qualified for the
Race to the ASB classic for the
country’s top juniors in Auckland
in early January.
They each train 10 to 15 hours
a week.
Longer term, both sisters want
to go to United States colleges
on tennis scholarships and then
progress to the professional tennis
circuit.
Emme also plays netball and
was playing touch rugby the
night before she knocked out
the top seed at this month’s
nationals. Lucia played hockey
until last year and Samuel loves
cricket and football.
Adventure park to host world MTB series
TOP TALENT: Mountain biker Sam Blenkinsop has signed
up for the March 2024 event. PHOTO: CRANKWORX
CHRISTCHURCH Adventure
Park is gearing up to host
mountain biking excellence
when the internationally
renowned Crankworx Summer
Series visits the city for the first
time in March.
While this is the first time
Christchurch will host the series,
it is the third time the event will
be held in New Zealand, following
previous trips to Queenstown
in the last two years.
Adventure Park general manager
Anne Newman said she
can’t wait to showcase the park to
an international audience.
“Crankworx is such a fun
and exciting event on the riding
calendar,” she said.
“This will not only inspire the
younger generation but provide
an unforgettable experience for
riders and spectators alike.”
NZ Major Events has
committed to hosting the
series yearly until 2027, with
Christchurch locked in for 2024.
Said ChristchurchNZ head
of major events Karena Finnie:
“We are looking forward
to Crankworx Summer
Series coming to Ōtautahi
Christchurch, we can’t wait for
both residents and visitors to
join us for a special weekend of
balance and play at Christchurch
Adventure Park.
“The exceptional quality of
the competition coupled with
Christchurch being a worldclass
mountain bike destination
makes this an event you don’t
want to miss.”
A new downhill mountain
biking track will be built for use
in the event, which will offer
riders the chance to race in a
Category 1 event sanctioned by
the Union Cycliste Internationale
– the governing body for
mountain biking.
Canterbury-based rider Sam
Blenkinsop has already signed up
for the event and will be joined
by a host of international stars
announced in January.
A permanent head-to-head
pump track has also been
commissioned in collaboration
with ChristchurchNZ which
Crankworx says reflects the
dedicated commitment to the
mountain bike community in
Canterbury.
UCI World Cup qualification
points will also be available to
riders aspiring to qualify to race
on the World Cup circuit.
Said event director Ariki
Tibble: “With a world-class
venue in the Christchurch
Adventure Park we believe we
have the recipe for an escalated
Crankworx experience for New
Zealanders in 2024.”
Mo’unga, Frizell get one over Kane in Japan
match against Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath. PHOTO: GETTY
FORMER ALL Blacks Richie
Mo’unga and Shannon Frizell
got one over their old skipper
Sam Cane in the latest round of
action in Japan Rugby League
One.
Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo
edged Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath
26-19, with both Frizell and
the recently departed Crusader
Mo’unga playing key parts in
the win.
Mo’unga set up the opening
try of the game, with a line
break close to the line before
passing to winger Atsuki Kuwayama
in the 10th minute.
Mo’unga also played a hand in
the second try, kicking across
field to Jone Naikabula, who
then chipped ahead and scored.
The third Toshiba Brave Lupus
Tokyo try came just before
halftime when Cane ran off the
back of a scrum but Mo’unga
forced a loose ball in the tackle,
with prop Sena Kimura scoring
on the turnover.
Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath
came back from 19-6 down
to make it 19-16 before Frizell
scored the decisive try midway
through the second half, which
Mo’unga then converted.
Cane, starting at No 8, again
played a full 80 minutes for
Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath.
Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo
now have two wins from two
games and sit second on the
table behind Saitama Wild
Knights.
In other games, the Kobelco
Kobe Steelers, featuring Ardie
Savea and Brodie Retallick, also
won their second game of the
season, defeating Shizoka BlueRevs
30-26. A late Kanta Matsunaga
try and a Bryn Gatland
conversion secured the win.
Aaron Smith and Beauden
Barrett both started in Toyota
Verblitz 24-22 loss to Yokohama
Canon Eagles. Smith scored
with seven minutes left, with
Barrett converting to close
the gap to two points, but the
Canon Eagles, down to 14 men,
held on to win.
Cruisy win
for Park in
premier
women’s
T20 final
• By Sam Coughlan
LANCASTER PARK have
waltzed to victory over North
West in the final of the premier
women’s T20 competition at the
Hagley Nursery Ground.
Park won the toss and bowled
first, with Jess Simmons ripping
through North West’s top order.
The quick bowler took five
wickets for just 12 runs in her
four-over spell at the start of the
innings to ensure North West
never got going.
Jacinta Savage took two wickets
as well, with North West bowled
out for just 44.
Lancaster Park’s opening pair
of Harriet Graham (24 not out)
and Sarah Parker (11 not out)
were under little pressure in the
chase, cruising home to win by 10
wickets.
The result sees Park go one better
than in last year’s competition
where they lost to Sydenham in
the final.
The one-day competition
resumes on January 20, with Park
leading the way heading into
the Christmas break, five points
clear of Sydenham and Old Boys
Collegians.
Club cricket has taken a
break for Christmas and
New Year, and returns
on January 13. Sam
Coughlan reports on
the state of play
DEFENDING champions
Burnside West University lead a
close two-day competition at the
halfway mark of the season.
They are 13 points clear of
Lancaster Park, and are unbeaten
in the competition heading
into the break – with Old Boys
Collegians right behind Park in
third.
Burnside captain Matthew
Hay said they are working hard.
“Our win (of the two-day
competition) last year was the
first since 1991 so we know
how hard it is to win this
competition.
“Our cricket’s been really good
so far, we’ve dug ourselves out of
a lot of holes.”
In the one-day competition,
two teams claimed their first
victory of the season while one
of the top teams slipped up in a
game they might have expected
to win.
Defending champions OBC
lead the way at the break after securing
their second one-day win
from as many games, beating
East Shirley by one wicket.
Canterbury representative
Matt Boyle starred, taking 2/43
to restrict Shirley to 200 from
their 50 overs before scoring 66
from just 40 balls to kick-start
the chase.
The fact Shirley got through
to 200 was thanks to Tim
Hampton-Matehe, who finished
99 not out, agonisingly short of a
century.
Jeff Case stood tall, scoring 91
HIGH SCORERS: Richard Faust (left) celebrates his century for Merivale-Papanui; Tim
not out as wickets fell around
him to secure the win for OBC
in partnership with No 11 batter
Harrison Cox.
Newly promoted Merivale-
Papanui claimed their first win
of the season away at Sydenham,
after Richard Faust scored 126
not out to set an imposing chase
of 250.
Sydenham fought hard but
were bowled out for 224, as
Samuel Medhurst took the final
wicket and finished with figures
of 3/49 to seal victory by 25 runs.
Burnside suffered an unfortunate
loss to Lancaster Park as
they look to avenge last year’s
loss in the final of this competition
which denied them a second
trophy.
Batting first, Park struggled
to 192 all out thanks in no small
part to a score of 84 from opening
batter Kalhan Marc Challu,
with the next highest score only
18.
In reply, Burnside fell to 180
all out to lose by 12 runs, with
their only shining light being 95
not out from Canterbury player
Mitchell Hay who kept his side
in it but couldn’t find support.
St Albans also claimed their
first win of the season, beating
Heathcote by 48 runs.
Sam Kearns (68) and Nabil
Moughal (50 not out) ensured
St Albans managed 221/9 from
their 50 overs.
In reply, Heathcote never
got close with frequent wickets
derailing their chase, and
were bowled out after Kearns,
Moughal and skipper Joe Lowe
took two wickets each.
The season resumes on
January 13 with the third round
of one-dayers.
Bin good this Christmas
By putting the right stuff in the yellow bin, you’re making it
possible for us to recycle. If the wrong stuff goes in the yellow
bin, the entire truck load might have to go to landfill instead
of being recycled.
Only put these clean items in the yellow bin:
Remember:
take the lids, caps or
tops off bottles and
containers and put
these in the red bin.
Cardboard boxes (flattened)
2 litre plastic ice cream containers
Plastic bottles numbered 1,2 and 5
