Home detention for killer ‘beyond belief’
Mark Nagel took a life of a
loving father and finished with a
high five with one of his mates.
Yet Justice Dunningham
acknowledged he will be “well
supported” on home detention.
This decision is beyond belief
and was opposed by the Crown.
I am at an absolute loss as to why
this killer was given home detention.
People on fraud charges
have been given more jail
time than this disgusting man.
The judge’s decision is shameful.
The killer should be deported.

Five months home detention
for killing an innocent man
and just walking away is not
what I would call justice. He
should have got an Americanstyle
life imprisonment with no
possibility of parole. Nagel is not
the sort of person we want on
our streets. When his sentence
ends he should be deported back
to South Africa.

I think it’s an absolute joke
that he has been let out if prison.
He killed an innocent person
he should be serving 10 years at
least and be deported afterwards

A cyclist died on SH1 near
Blenheim on his way to see
his family, run off the road by
Samuel Paterson who at the time
was drunk and sentenced to 11
months home detention and a
few dollars compensation to the
grieving family, and Mark Nagel
killed another with a high kick to
the head and was initially given
five months in prison but then
granted home detention, whilst
a rapist received two years in jail
for his crimes but no-one died.
I’m not saying one crime is
any more or any less than the
other, but when a person has
died the punishment should be
harsher.
A smack on the hand and a
few months in confinement does
nothing to deter others from
breaking the law.
The police do their jobs to the
best of their abilities but judges
seem too frightened to carry out
a sentence that fits the crime.

Broken council bin
It is disappointing my red
bin has a broken handle. I
contacted the council over three
months ago to advise them, but
after three months and three
calls still no repair.
Maybe they will deduct something
off my rates?

Scott Barrett award
Really pleased to see Crusaders
captain Scott Barrett get
the Super Rugby Player trophy
at New Zealand Rugby awards
night. He is so consistent. Find it
hard to fathom Richie Mo’unga,
the Crusaders brilliant first-five
(now in Japan) was not even
nominated in that category.
He had another stellar season,
especially at the business end
as they call it. Scott Robertson
as national coach and the seven
times champion Crusaders could
be considered unlucky.
On a related subject, great to
see Crusader great Matt Todd
doing a wonderful job as one of
Rob Penney’s assistant coaches at
the Crusaders. He is exactly what
this team needs going forward
into a new era.
