Now you have lost money. And the people who<br />

traded with you were hoping you would, because<br />

your loss was their gain. They had excess<br />

profits. They only traded for things they<br />

really needed and could use right away. They<br />

did not need the cash to stay in business.<br />

Taking trade is a vicious cycle; one that is almost<br />

impossible to break. Just try telling a customer<br />

who is acclimated to trading that he or<br />

she has to pay cash. He or she<br />

will not believe you. Odds are,<br />

you will not do business with that<br />

customer for a long, long time.<br />

If you continue to ask for cash,<br />

and donʼt back down at the last<br />

minute (which is a bitter temptation<br />

for a publisher whose magazine<br />

has to go to press wether the space is filled<br />

or not), perhaps those people will agree to do<br />

business with you in the future for money.<br />

As an employee, the most annoying thing<br />

an employer ever did to me was to do business<br />

in trade. Employers like to pretend that<br />

trade doesnʼt count. I consider it salary. So<br />

when my boss complained that she “took no<br />

money home,” while she modeled her fur coat<br />

and her jewels, my stomach<br />

turned. Our initial staff of three<br />

had agreed to income goals for<br />

us all when we started. To me it<br />

looked like she was not only getting<br />

paid, but getting more than<br />

her share of what we had all<br />
