Max Mara’s materials for this collection are richer than Calder’s but every<br />

look is a personaggio, echo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual panache of <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>gmaster,<br />

<strong>the</strong> strong woman, Pierrot, acrobat, conjuror.<br />

In red, white, camel and black <strong>the</strong>re are leopard<strong>in</strong>e pr<strong>in</strong>ts, audacious<br />

stripes, dist<strong>in</strong>ctive spots and <strong>the</strong> odd star. The look is leggy, bold and<br />

showy; t<strong>in</strong>y twill shorts with a pannier construction, a m<strong>in</strong>i pareo to wear<br />

with a mannish blazer tucked <strong>in</strong>. A popl<strong>in</strong> shirt dress with pie crust frill to<br />

volum<strong>in</strong>ise <strong>the</strong> sleeve, a one shouldered asymmetric comb<strong>in</strong>aison and<br />

a strictly tailored coat dress with a flirty skirt, a trapeze shaped organza<br />

trenchcoat, and a bib-fronted micro-comb<strong>in</strong>aison all beg to be worn with<br />

this season’s strappy silver Mary Janes.<br />
