Max Mara’s Magic Circus<br />

Max Mara Pre Fall collection hits <strong>the</strong> stores at that moment when we<br />

are shelter<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> swelter<strong>in</strong>g sun at our out-of-town hideaways,<br />

but we are just start<strong>in</strong>g to look forward that thrill<strong>in</strong>g time a few weeks<br />

hence, when temperatures will drop, <strong>the</strong> days shorten, and <strong>the</strong> torpid<br />

city bursts back to life. Everyone will be talk<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> newest exhibition,<br />

<strong>the</strong> latest movie, <strong>the</strong> edgiest show, but it’s a good time to revisit<br />

our favourites too.<br />

The Whitney Museum of American Art is a Max Mara favourite;<br />

and one of <strong>the</strong> most beloved pieces <strong>in</strong> its collection is <strong>the</strong> Alexander<br />

Calder’s “Cirque Cader”. Recently restored and redisplayed is <strong>the</strong><br />

elaborate troupe of <strong>in</strong>geniously articulated performers and hundreds<br />

of props <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g nets, flags, carpets, lamps and musical <strong>in</strong>struments<br />

all beneath <strong>the</strong> tower<strong>in</strong>g masts of <strong>the</strong> big top with its jaunty pennants.<br />

Made from humble wire, wood, metal, cloth, cork and str<strong>in</strong>g, each<br />

piece generates character and charm. Calder’s performances were<br />

<strong>the</strong> talk of Paris and his audiences <strong>in</strong>cluded Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró,<br />

and Marcel Duchamp. “Cirque Cader” speaks of <strong>the</strong> frisson of <strong>the</strong> live<br />

performance, <strong>the</strong> first night, <strong>the</strong> energy of <strong>the</strong> applause, <strong>the</strong> reason<br />

why <strong>the</strong> rentrée is so thrill<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
