Tourists’ lucky escape
after trees stop 100m fall
• By Dylan Smits
A CARLOAD of tourists – one
aged 88 – hung upside down,
staring down a 100m drop, after
they crashed off a road near
Duvauchelle.
Akaroa chief fire officer Mark
Thomson has spoken to Bay
Harbour News about how lucky
the family from Utah in the
United States was.
Their vehicle slipped off the
shingle Duvauchelle Stock
Route, and was only stopped
from plummeting 100m by
trees which brought the car to
a halt.
When Thomson’s crew got to
the scene, the driver had managed
to get out of the vehicle but
the rest were trapped inside.
“They were hanging upside
down staring down that drop,
so they were very scared and
worried,” said Thomson.
“If the trees weren’t there,
they would have carried on for
quite some time. It would have
been a completely different
result.”
The group were relatively unscathed
from the ordeal, which
happened last Wednesday about
1.30pm.
When firefighters got to the
scene it was clear the car could
still fall.
“They weren’t safe from
falling until we used the
winch to secure the vehicle.
They calmed down a bit, but
even then they were still very
worried,” said Thomson.
FORMER Lyttelton Harbour
Business Association chair Vicki
Tahau-Paton has joined the
race for a seat on the Te Pātaka
Community Board.
“Lyttelton must be ready for
the future. Balancing the needs
and wants of so many will take
a strong and informed advocate
to represent all of those voices,”
she said.
Tahau-Paton, who is standing
as an independent, will run
against the left leaning political
group The People’s Choice candidate
Dr Jillian Frater.
A by-election was forced when
Reuben Davidson
October, citing the end of her
Tahau-Paton’s bid comes as
The posts came after she and
Brock appeared on Newshub’s
AM Show over the contentious
issue of cruise ship visits to
Lyttleton.
Tahau-Paton is in favour of the
visits; Brock is opposed.
The next stage in the dispute
will be a case review in the district
court on March 13.
Brock said the case against her
has no merit.
Frater said it was disappointing
the dispute between Tahau-Paton
“It seems like a personal thing
Frater said she is still
concerned about the long
cruise ship visits but said the
bus policy has had a positive
impact for residents’ short term
overcrowding concerns.
“I think my knowledge about
me in my election.”
Frater said she is open to a
Tahau-Paton said it is unlikely
she would attend a public meeting
Tahau-Paton said her main
Quick-thinking lifesavers
NEWS 5
In Brief
rescue paraglider from rocks
• By Dylan Smits
A SURF lifesaver has described
the tricky rescue of a paraglider
in heavy swells who crashed
onto rocks at Taylors Mistake.
Will Simmons
and
Callum Gard
were on duty on
Saturday when
they saw a
paraglider in
Callum
Gard
trouble about
3.30pm.
“We could see
him dropping,
dropping, dropping, so we
launched the boat out and got
there as fast as we could,” said
Simmons.
He said paragliders in the area
aim for the wind updraft to help
them hover above Whitewash
Head in Scarborough.
“This guy miscalculated pretty
badly and missed the updraft.”
The surf lifesavers were concerned
if the paraglider landed
in the water in a rocky area
known as the Giant’s Eye, he
could drown.
“Knowing that they’ve got
all the ropes and everything
COURAGEOUS: Taylors Mistake surf lifesaver Will
Simmons in a club inflatable rescue boat.
attached to their kite, it would
be pretty horrible to land in the
water and be able to keep afloat,”
said Simmons.
Simmons and Gard arrived at
the site in an inflatable rescue
boat within five minutes.
“I said to my crew person
(Gard), ‘he’s on the rocks, he’s
on the rocks, time for a rock
rescue’.”
It was a relief the paraglider
managed to land uninjured on
the rocks instead of in the water.
Simmons had to manoeuvre
the IRB close to the rocky outcrop
the paraglider was standing
on, while Gard helped the paraglider
step onto the vessel.
“It was pretty sketchy to position
the boat right up against the
rocks.”
When they arrived there were
heavy swells which risked the
boat and their safety.
“It was pretty much a split second,
quick step off into the boat,
then getaway rather than being
pushed into the rocks.”
Simmons held the IRB in
position just long enough for the
paraglider, aged in his 30s, to get
onboard before jetting off.
“We had to get out of there
before the next wave hit.
“I don’t know how he would
have managed to get from where
he was back up the hill. He
needed us to bring him back to
shore.”
The paraglider was grateful for
the rescue.
“He was kind of shaken up,
but as soon as we touched down
on the rocks, you could tell he
kind of brightened up a wee bit.”
Simmons said the man was
an experienced paraglider but
unfamiliar with the area.
“That’s what caught him off
guard.”
The two lifesavers
administered a health check
before taking the paraglider
back to the clubhouse where
they parted.
SHIPWRECK SALVAGE
GETS UNDER WAY
The salvage operation for the
Austro Carina shipwreck will
start tomorrow, weather and
wave conditions permitting.
Aero Marine Salvage has been
contracted as the company for the
operation by the vessel’s insurer
and owner, Pegasus Fishing Ltd.
The 25-metre fishing vessel ran
aground near Fishermans Bay in
September and leaked thousands
of litres of diesel into the ocean.
There is no burden on taxpayers;
the cost of the operation is the
responsibility of the owner and
insurer.
ELECTRICAL FAULT
CAUSES HOUSE FIRE
A holiday home in Robinsons Bay
is unliveable after fire engulfed a
large part of the house. Akaroa
chief fire officer Mark Thomson
said the fire was caused by an
electrical fault in the switchboard.
A neighbour called 111 on
December 28 after seeing smoke
coming from the property. The
homeowners were unaware
as they were out boating. The
Akaroa and Little River fire crews
arrived at the scene about 6pm. It
took them more than two hours
to put out the fire.
CRASH: A family of five tourists were luckily uninjured after their vehicle
crashed on the Duvauchelle Stock Route.
PHOTO: GOOGLE
Group trapped, 88yo
climbs out of window
in Duvauchelle crash
• From page 1
The family was about 300m along
the stock route from the Duvauchelle
settlement when the car’s outer wheels
went into a soft edge of the gravel road,
causing it to slip two metres down a steep
drop, where it came to a rest against the
trees.
The middle-aged male driver
managed to escape the car but the
other four passengers remained
trapped until they were freed by
the fire crew using the jaws of life.
The rescue took just under an hour.
“They were very shaken up about
it. Our job was just to keep them
calm until we could get them out,”
said Thomson.
“They were very, very relieved and very
grateful. They couldn’t believe we were
volunteers.”
Thomson said the 88-year-old managed
to get herself out when a window was
removed by the fire crew.
Thomson said he supports additional
signage on the stock route warning drivers
about the risks of the soft edging.
He said GPS can cause issues by guiding
motorists to the shortest routes, which
might not always be the safest.
Mark
Thomson
“What you’ve got to do is put in the
shortest route excluding gravel. A lot of
tourists don’t think about GPS, it will take
you the shortest route no matter what the
roads like.”
Akaroa police senior constable Anita
Osborne said the major factor contributing
to the crash was the condition
of the road edge.
She said the driver was not speeding
or being careless.
Maintenance of unpaved back
roads like the Duvauchelle Stock
Route can push gravel to the edge,
making the road look wider, said
Osborne.
“The grass grows up and looks
like a solid part and it isn’t. A drive
past road inspection doesn’t always pick
this up.”
City council streets maintenance manager
Steve Guy said council engineers have
assessed the site and are considering what
could be done to strengthen the road’s
edge.
“Additional signage and sight rails are
being considered,” said Guy.
Osborne said city council contractors set
up a temporary warning sign at the crash
site on Thursday at her request.
the UK in 1859. Gus Milne, who specialises in scrimshaw art – the
technique of bone and cartilage carving pioneered by whalers –
used four ivory piano keys to depict the vessel with Shag Rock in
the background. Tickets are $5 and available from the Front Room
Cafe and the Mt Pleasant Farmers Market.

Retired builder
looks to sell
huge rock
collection
• By Dylan Smits
THE TINY settlement of
Birdlings Flat is home to New
Zealand’s largest private rock
collection.
But now, Vince Burke says it’s
time to pass on the 10,000 plus
pieces he has in his Gemstone
and Fossil Museum.
The 85-year-old has been
collecting rocks since he started
fishing with his father as a child,
but time is now catching up with
him.
Burke is now looking to sell his
collection, either in its entirety
or as individual items, which he
estimates is worth $650,000.
Burke opened the museum
at his Birdlings Flat property
in 2003 as a way to house his
steadily growing hoard.
With nearly every cabinet and
surface in his bach taken up by
the rocks, a new storage location
became necessary.
“My wife wanted them out.”
He built a museum building
on his property and moved the
collection in.
The same year the museum
opened, at age 65, Burke retired
from his career as a builder.
Since retiring, he has spent
numerous hours hunting for even
RARE FIND: The Gemstone and Fossil Museum’s agatised
or petrified log is a unique find. Weighing 86kg, it is the
focal piece of the 10,000-strong collection.
more rocks across New Zealand
to add to his collection.
“The passion only grew since.”
Burke grew up in Addington,
but he often stayed at his family
bach in Birdlings Flat.
During the 1970s, a wave of
interest in rock collecting swept
through the area.
“There was a guy who had quite
a collection in his garage, and I
think that triggered my interest a
bit because I was really fascinated
by the polishing of them.
“I think just the beauty of
a rock, that’s what got me so
passionate.”
Burke built his own bach
in Birdlings Flat in 1971 and
moved in permanently with his
wife Colleen in 2013.
Burke’s main interest is in
agates, a crystal-like, colourful
mineral formed inside rocks
when silica accumulates in gaps.
One of Burke’s most unique
discoveries is a petrified
log, which he says has been
preserved in agate for about 65
million years.
Burke and two other rock
enthusiasts found the log in
2007 while digging for agates
in a creek on one of his regular
rock hunting trips in the
Hororata hills.
“It’s one of the best finds we’ve
ever had. We didn’t know how
big it was until we started to get
it out.”
The monkey puzzle tree log
weighed 86kg due to the agate, so
the trio had to tow it out of the
creek and roll it on to a truck.
Burke said he will likely
donate the log to the Canterbury
Museum due to its rarity as the
only fully intact agatised log
known to him in New Zealand.
Riverbeds are the best place to
go agate hunting according to the
rock hunter.
“What you’re looking for is
a chunk of glass. The glass is
an agate. So it shines and it’s
translucent.”
Burke said exploring areas like
the Ashburton River, Rangitata
River, Mt Barrosa and Mt Somers
have all yielded exciting finds.
Burke doesn’t let his age stop
him from rock hunting. He
regularly goes on trips with his
friends from the Canterbury rock
club in search of new additions to
his collection.
“It keeps me pretty fit and
active, and I really do like getting
out there.”
boy.
He is uncertain about the fate
of his collection.
Burke has approached the
Canterbury Museum and Te
Papa about donating it, but says
they told him they do not have
the space.
He also has the desire to leave
an inheritance for his three
children and four grandchildren.
“If I can sell the collection, I’d
sooner leave the children some
money, then a pile of bloody
rocks.”
If he does not find a buyer for
the whole collection, Burke said
he will try donating a few rare
pieces to museums and sell the
rest individually.
Coastal Pathway should be a safe place
IN RESPONSE to letters to your
paper I would like to say how
great the shared Coastal Pathway
is.
I am a cyclist and a walker so
understand the issue from both
sides.
All users, cyclists, walkers,
dog owners, skateboarders, etc,
should enjoy it whilst being considerate
to others.
Fast and confident cyclists
should use the road cycle lane.
Perhaps all path users should
use the highway code rules in
New Zealand – keep to the left
and overtake on the right side
when it’s safe to do so. If you are
overtaking then it is your obligation
to keep clear.
The Coastal path should be a
safe place for walkers, cyclists
who are not in a hurry or are
learning to ride and dog owners
who keep their dogs under
control.
If we all take responsibility
for our part and consider those
around us then all should be
sweet.
Louisa’s refusal to let landmark be
jettisoned results in civic award
It takes a team to
rebuild a jetty, but one
Governors Bay resident,
Louisa Eades, has been
recognised for her
above-and-beyond
dedication to seeing
the bay’s community
landmark reopened.
She talks to reporter
Dylan Smits
IT WAS A long journey to get
the $3.8 million Governors Bay
jetty rebuilt after it was badly
damaged by the February 22,
2011 earthquake.
“I think we are all really
pleased with what we have
achieved, and I’m really glad to
see people using the jetty. That’s
what it’s all about,” said Governors
Bay Jetty Trust secretary
and founding member Louisa
Eades.
Eades has received a civic
award for her years of hard work.
“I’m more of a back room sort
of person, but it was a real honour.
I knew it was a really good
thing for the jetty and the award
wasn’t really about me. It was
about everybody who’s helped,”
she said.
The 56-year-old was nominated
for the award by two trust
members and a Governors Bay
resident.
Raised in the United Kingdom,
Eades moved to New Zealand in
1998.
She has lived in Governors
Bay since 2015 with her husband
Mike and three children.
As Eades’ children grew older,
she had planned to volunteer in
her spare time.
“I saw people who were on
the PTA and volunteered for
the community, and I always
thought I should do something
for the community someday.”
The city council revealed in
February 2015 it would not fund
the rebuild of the jetty due to an
estimated cost of $7.8 million.
Eades had only been living in
Governors Bay for a few weeks,
but she was motivated to preserve
what she felt was an iconic
landmark of her new home.
“I just thought there’s no way
they can’t rebuild it, and just
the thought of it disintegrating,
that’s what kept me going.”
Believing the jetty could
be repaired for much less,
disappointed locals formed the
jetty trust to raise money for the
rebuild and to continue lobbying
for a funding partnership with
the city council.
“I don’t think they thought we
would do it,” said Eades.
“I think they were just giving
us the option to make a deputation.”
The trust went on to form a
partnership with the city council,
and became responsible for
fundraising half of the rebuild
cost.
At first, Eades only volunteered
to fill out some forms.
“It ended up turning into a
Walk, Run, Fun!
DEDICATED: Governors Bay Jetty Trust secretary Louisa Eades receiving a city
council civic award for her work helping to rebuild the jetty, with Linwood
Ward councillor Yani Johanson and Mayor Phil Mauger.
huge undertaking,” she said.
Eades has worked as a technical
writer since she moved to
New Zealand, specialising in employment
agreements and health
and safety.
She believes these skills have
aided her in publicising fundraising
efforts online, writing for
the trust’s website and communicating
with potential donors.
“Communication skills are
really important in engaging
people and keeping things interesting,”
she said.
As part of a small organisation
with limited funding, Eades had
to use her skills to get the trust’s
message out.
“We had pretty much no advertising
budget, but you would
be amazed by how many people
from all over the world have
lived here, or had family here,
who have been on that jetty.”
Eades has played a lead role
in organising the trust’s various
fundraising initiatives, such as
art auctions, selling timber from
the old jetty and selling donor
plaques for the new jetty.
Speaking on behalf of the trust
has presented personal challenges
for Eades.
“I have had to sort of quell my
fear of public speaking.”
After fulfilling her obligations
to the trust, her fulltime job and
her family, she has no time left
for hobbies.
“The jetty is my hobby,” she
said. “Let’s just say my garden
needs some attention.”
Alongside the other trust
members, Eades has learned how
to problem solve when difficulties
arise.
“Every time there was a barrier,
instead of just giving up we
actually sat down and we would
brainstorm and come up with
ways around it.”
Acquiring a building contractor
was an issue on two
occasions.
The trust bought the jetty from
the city council for $1 so it could
oversee construction after building
contractors said they would
only deal with the official owner.
Another major obstacle was
convincing the city council to
grant the trust a loan so they
could meet their half of the
rebuild cost on schedule and
construction could start.
The loan was agreed to in
March 2022.
“That was a real turning point
for us,” said Eades.
The jetty reopened in September,
after more than eight years
of work.
“Relief was the biggest thing
I felt, but also really just happiness,
elation,” said Eades.
Her work at the trust is far
from over. There is still money to
raise to pay back the remaining
$350,000 of the city council’s
loan to the trust.
“I’m expecting it to be at least
another couple years of busyness.”
Eades hopes many visitors will
come use the jetty over the next
hundred years to make the work
of the trust truly worthwhile.
Bottlenose dolphins delight onlookers
A RARE visit by bottlenose
dolphins to Akaroa Harbour
has delighted swimmers and
kayakers.
The pod was estimated to be
made up of as many as 100 of the
dolphins and was seen just after
7am on Sunday near the Akaroa
lighthouse and wharf.
The animals were feeding in
the water directly off Akaroa
township by about 9.30am
and moved towards the
heads after about an hour, but
stayed in the area until the
afternoon.
The dolphins were followed by
several boaties, kayakers and jet
ski riders.
The endangered Hector’s
dolphins are often seen in
Akaroa Harbour, but it is very
unusual to find bottlenose
dolphins there.
George Waghorn, part owner
and skipper at Akaroa Dolphins,
said it had been about a year
since a smaller pod was seen in
the same area.
He said the dolphins had put
on a show for the sightseers, who
were delighted to see them.
“It was pretty amazing to see
them. They were jumping and
hanging around, and even
our 2-year-old daughter got
to go for a ride on the dinghy
and she was screaming and
loving it.
“They looked all really healthy
– they were doing front flips,
back flips, belly flops, side flops
tail slaps.”
The pod had left the harbour
by Sunday afternoon, but
Waghorn was now expecting
bottlenose dolphin sightings to
become more common in the
area.
MOTORING 19
ZR-V a premium passenger experience
HONDA IS looking to take the
sales fight to its many mid-sized
urban SUV rivals with its new
ZR-V, one of the most complete all
round models we’ve seen from the
company in ages, in this part of the
world.
In essence, it’s an SUV spinoff
of the thoroughly competent
Honda Civic. With that quality
DNA underpinning it, the ZR-V
is much more capable than your
typical urban SUV. It replaces
the popular HRV that ended its
successful run on our market 18
months ago. With no suitable
replacement available out of Japan
until 2025, Honda here decided to
whistle up the ZR-V as an interim
replacement. It is sold in North
America, as a larger version of the
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
HRV and does exceptionally well
in one of the world’s toughest new
car markets.
For Honda, the ZR-V delivers
the company’s next-level hybrid
electrification technology. The
ZR-V Sport, uses a new 2.0L
e:HEV direct injection petrol
engine with two electric motors
for a collective power output of
135kW and 315Nm of torque.
If that doesn’t take your interest
there’s the option of a 1.5L direct
injection turbo that has been a
staple of the Honda range for 8
years.
The hybrid power train is
exclusive to the flagship $55,000
ZR-V Sport, but not the with
$47,000 turbo provided for this
road test. It’s the same price as the
Civic sedan but more
appealing being larger,
offering on-trend
SUV styling, and
more versatility and
practicality.
Punting the test
vehicle along with
plenty of intent is an
upgraded version
of Honda’s stalwart
1.5 turbo engine. It’s good for
131kW of power and 240Nm
of torque, both decent enough
numbers for an engine of this
size. Torque comes into play from
just 1700rpm, although it’s more
about work than play as it unearths
plenty of low-speed pulling power.
In real world driving the motor
is flexible with good throttle
response. It’s quieter in the higher
rev range, to the point where you
aren’t looking to turn up the sound
system to counter engine noise. A
much-improved constant variable
transmission is shared with the
Honda Civic and features normal
and eco driving modes and a
user-selectable sport mode. It’s a
transmission that rarely puts a foot
wrong and feels a good match to
this feisty compact turbo engine.
A generously proportioned cabin
and an equally commodious rear
cargo hatch is among the best in
the compact urban SUV class. A
60-40 split rear seat quickly folds
down for more load space. Quality
is one of the lasting impressions
of the passenger compartment,
and you can only admire the
methodical way Honda have gone
about achieving this. Much of this
is down to the generous use of
quality materials throughout the
cabin, especially on touch points.
Plenty of effort has also gone into
providing a premium look and feel
Rating out of 10: Performance 8, handling 7 , build quality
8, comfort 8, passenger and load space 8, Styling 6, Fuel
Economy on road test average consumption 8.9L /100km,
Value for money 6, Safety, Five Star ANCAP crash rating and
Clean vehicle fee $6,900
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
to the switchgear and controls.
ZR-V Sport and Turbo are
the first models to feature new
Honda Connect emergency
services. This alerts these services
if it detects the vehicle’s airbags
have been activated. An excellent
new single-camera system offers
better visibility. Combined with
software advances and a new, more
powerful processor, the system
is capable of more quickly and
accurately spotting hazards, along
with road lines and signs.
Well-sorted suspension and
steering are the cornerstones
of an agile and nicely balanced
urban SUV that’s right at ease
and taking charge on our roads,
with often-tricky weather and
driving conditions. The suspension
reacts decisively and is a calming
influence in steadying the car
in response to sudden and
unexpected changes in the road
surface. In around-town driving
the ride may be a bit firm for some.
I didn’t mind it at all and liked
the way it gives the test vehicle a
sportier character than most of its
Japanese and Korean competitor.
However, it’s still shaded by the
more accomplished European
offerings in this market segment.
