MEET AZYAL Kaur.
She was the first baby born in
Christchurch in 2024 and came into the
world three minutes after midnight on New
Year’s Day.
Amrinder Singh and his wife Jaspreet
Kaur welcomed their 3.9kg newborn at
Christchurch Women’s Hospital.
They said the pregnancy was unplanned
as they’d had only been “trying for a
few months” before their “prayers were
answered”.
“Jaspreet really enjoyed her pregnancy
and it was an uncomplicated birth,” said
Singh.

Innes Rd
upgrades
to finish
in March
A BUSY Mairehau thoroughfare
is being rebuilt to fix the poor
condition of the road and its
vibration issues.
The city council has begun
strengthening and improving
the chipseal surface of Innes Rd
between Mersey St and Mahars
Rd, as well as replacing the
watermain system.
Said city council transport
planning and delivery manager
Jacob Bradbury: “This road is in
a particularly bad condition, so it
needs to be totally restored from
the foundation to make sure it’s
of good quality for road users.
“Since the Northern Motorway
opened, we’ve also seen many
more heavy vehicles using this
road, and this work will ensure
that the surface can deal with the
increased loadings.”
The work will be carried out in
two stages with one lane of traffic
maintained in each direction.
However, on-street parking will
not be available.
The first stage of work on the
northern side of Innes Rd is
under way until mid-March,
while the second stage of work on
the southern side is expected to
be completed by mid-June.
“We know this will be
disruptive for businesses and
residents, so we want to thank
everyone for their patience while
we get this major piece of work
completed,” said Bradbury.

which is a testament to what
Jaspreet and I believe in. We’re
both very religious and very
spiritual, so when we chose this
name, it was perfect,” said Singh,
who works for SolarZero as a
business development manager.
Kaur and Singh met in India in
40 years
combined
experience
2009 and said it was “instant love
at first sight”.
“We fit together well. It was
only difficult when I immigrated
to New Zealand in 2014, leaving
Jaspreet behind. In 2017, we got
married and held our wedding in
India,” said Singh.
“We were planning for Jaspreet

Kaur moved to Christchurch
permanently in January last year.

Documentary maker finds solace

KIRSTY CAMERON is someone
who doesn’t shy away from
telling traumatic, hard-hitting
stories.
She has experienced many
deaths of her loved ones from a
young age.
“The first funeral I attended
was at 5-years-old. During my
adolescent years, I attended a funeral
every year, saying goodbye
to over 10 beloved family members
and friends,” the Casebrook
resident said.
“It was a macabre joke in
our family that we didn’t need
to bother with reunions as we
caught up at the funeral home
every year. The same song playing,
Bridge Over Troubled Waters
(I hate that song), the same pastor,
just fewer people getting up
to speak.”
Cameron said at intermediate
school, a young girl had died in
an accident on the playground
and at 17, her best friend was
killed in a car crash by a drunk
driver, absolutely “shattering” her
world.
“I’ve watched four family
members battle cancer. I know
death well. I know what it is to
fear the phone ringing, to fear
that particular ‘hey’ on the other
end, in a tone that you just know
is bringing soul-crushing news,”
she said.
“So I guess I gravitate towards
loss and those who feel it. It’s a

familiar space somehow.”
Cameron has found such
familarity as the sole director
and producer of two full-feature
documentaries, both talking
about some of the most isolating
experiences one can live through.
Her newest documentary,
The Garden Room, will be
handed over for post-production
work in February before being
aired on Shine TV New Zealand,
GOOD Australia, and entered
into festivals.
Cameron is a full-time freelance
videographer for business,
mostly modelling and fashion.
“But my heart is set on documentaries.
“I love listening to people.
Trauma can be so isolating and
telling their hard stories gives me
a purpose, because if it’s not me,
who else?”
The Garden Room is a true story
about Cameron’s friends from
Burnside, Kylie and Ben Collins,
and their four children, Arlo, 4,
Azalea, 9, Kaiden, 12, and Maia,
14, who were all excited about
meeting newborn Grayson.
At 40 weeks, Kylie Collins met
with her midwife at Rangiora
Hospital for a stretch and sweep,
and the midwife made a devastating
discovery. The baby had no
heartbeat.
Collins was then rushed to
Christchurch Women’s Hospital
where, in the Garden Room – a
dedicated delivery room for
women experiencing fetal loss –
‘Every parent wants to
celebrate their child’s birth
but when one loses them,
it seems no one feels
comfortable to even say
the baby’s name’

her baby boy. Grayson never took
his first breath.
Said Cameron: “When I met
Kylie through church, she was
30 weeks pregnant. We connected
absolutely over her love
for Disney and with loud kids
everywhere.
“I wanted to make Kylie a small
keepsake film of her, Ben and
the kids meeting Grayson. Then
I saw a post pop-up on Kylie’s
Facebook page.
“Everything in me crashed as
I read about what had happened.
There was never any indication, it
was not even a possibility that he
would be stillborn.
“It was the most awful feeling,
knowing there was nothing I
could do. But, with my skills,
I could potentially give them a
space to share their journey or an
outlet.”
After watching Collins talk
openly and honestly at the
funeral of her son, Cameron
asked to follow the family
and she spent about two years
documenting and filming.

“I’ve had a lot of response
throughout, and I was surprised,
gobsmacked really, at how many
people want to talk about their
stillbirths.
“When you get pregnant, you
spend a lot of time with the
baby even before it is born. Nine
months of waiting in anticipation
and excitement.
“Every parent wants to
celebrate their child’s birth but
when one loses them, it seems no
one feels comfortable to even say
the baby’s name.
“I believe parents need this
space to talk about this trauma
and still celebrate their baby.
People have thanked the family
for being brave, and they feel like
they’ve been given a voice.”
Cameron said she underestimated
how much this documentary
would affect her.
“As a friend, it was not a good
feeling watching my friends
through my camera, reliving
their pain,” she said.
“But at the end of the day,
once the film is done, I get to
walk away. That is it for me. The
family though, has to live with it,
and that’s difficult.”
Cameron also said Ben Collins,
in particular, has a special
reach with father figures of those
going through the same situation.
“Ben is a typical tradie-rugbylike
bloke, who was openly crying
and very emotional during

encourages other fathers to speak
out and be vulnerable,” she said.
“In Christchurch alone, about
60-70 babies per year are stillborn.
My eyes are open and I am
determined to advocate and raise
awareness for the families who
go through this.
“I hope The Garden Room
creates conversations. Grayson
has such a legacy now; because of
him, this story was able to come
to fruition.”
Cameron finished raising more
than $20,000 in December, on
the Boosted crowdfunding platform,
for post-production colour
and sound design so the film can
be released into cinemas.

Damian McDonnell from Wellington
has worked on titles
including Our Flag Means Death,
Elvis, Mortal Engines, The Hobbit:
The Battle of the Five Armies,
and several Marvel films.
He will be working on the film
with Ben Edwards from Lyttleton,
who was named producer of
the year at the 2017 New Zealand
music awards and will work on
the sound.
Said Cameron: “Damian approached
me and offered his
skills at over 50 per cent discount
of his usual rate because he
believes this is a story that needs
to be told.
“How incredible is it that he
will be working on my little Kiwi
film?”
It is not the first time Cameron
has wanted to tell a story about
trauma.
Her first documentary,
Though I Walk (2020), follows
four Christian women on their
journeys through breast cancer
and tackles the question: “Where
is God when your world falls
apart?”
In her final year of studying
for a motion design degree at
Ara, Cameron directed and
produced the film which was
featured on New Zealand, Australian
and American television.
“Originally, Though I
Walk was meant to be about five
minutes long. I had a dear friend
who went through breast cancer
and needed to have a double
mastectomy.
“I wanted to tell the story of
these women’s journey, and how
they coped with a new sense of
self-identity. The four women
who were featured in the film
made it the success it is.”
Cameron said there is a
premiere in the pipeline for next
year, to celebrate The Garden
Room regardless of whether it
gets into festivals.

Boxing gym teaches Māori principles,
tackles misconceptions about the sport

A BOXING centre is putting
Māori principles at the forefront
of its training programmes.
Papuni Boxing Ōtautahi offers
youth classes for ages 7 to 18
and runs an academy for junior
boxers.
Reece Papuni, a former professional
boxer and New Zealand
Commonwealth Games representative,
started his business in
2021.
“When you come into our
space, whether it’s for a long time
or a short time, you are a part of
our whānau,” he said.
There has been increasing interest
in the sport among Māori
and he has now introduced
classes for aspiring female boxers
aged 12 to 18 at his centre in
Addington.
“We wanted to create a space
where female participants were
empowered and so far, we’re
delighted with the response.
“Across the board, wāhine
numbers are up 30 per cent
and participation has increased
20 per cent for tama as well,”
Papuni said.
The programmes are informed
by the wellbeing model, Te
Whare Tapa Whā, which incorporates
the four pillars of health:
tinana (physical), hinengaro
(mental), wairua (spiritual), and
whānau (family).
“We prioritise a sense of belonging
and community among
not just our young people, but
their wider whānau as well.”
Papuni believed following
traditional Māori values of kotahitanga
(unity), manaakitanga
(giving), and whanaungatanga
(relationships) also removed barriers
for young people – including
misconceptions about the
sport of boxing.
“Boxing is a great vehicle for
rangatahi as it teaches life skills
such as discipline, respect and
integrity,” Papuni said.

“It can be expensive,
but there are ways
to enjoy it without
overly stretching the
budget. It can also be
an intimidating topic if
you don’t know where to
start, but all you have to
do is take that first step.”
In their new book they
explore the best ways to
enjoy cheese – where to
buy it from, what to pair
it with and how to cook
with it.
A twizzle of puffed pastry
with cheese – a primo party
starter circa 1985! Great for
using the off-cuts of cheese
lurking in the fridge.

using camembert from
Normandy for its barnyard
funk. Industrial versions of
camembert will taste bland
and don’t melt as well, and
they’ll often ooze a pool of

2 garlic cloves, peeled
250g Normandy Camembert, in

2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, just
thawed
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 tsp smoked paprika
100g Parmigiano Reggiano, finely
grated
60g halloumi, finely grated
sea salt flakes
Chilli butter
50g unsalted butter, melted
1 tsp chilli oil
½ bunch of chives, finely sliced
Method
• Preheat the oven 200 deg C
conventional. Line a large baking
tray with baking paper.

conventional.
• In a small saucepan, blanch
the garlic cloves in boiling water
for 1–2 minutes, until softened.
Drain and slice the garlic.
• Remove the wax paper from
the cheese and return it to the
box, with the lid on the bottom.
Pierce the cheese in six places
• Brush the pastry sheets with
some of the beaten egg and
sprinkle over the paprika. Combine
the cheeses and sprinkle
over the top, then use a rolling
pin to roll over the cheese and
press it into the pastry.
• Fold the pastry sheets in half
and roll again with the rolling
pin to firmly enclose the cheese
layer. Cut the pastry sheets into
2cm-wide strips, then twist each
strip and place on the prepared
tray. Brush with the remaining
beaten egg, then sprinkle with
salt and bake for 15–20 minutes,
until golden brown.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 lively and refined
EXPECTATIONS are high on
any new model replacing a top
seller, even more so when it
happens to be the GLC SUV, a
sales star for Mercedes-Benz, the
producer of some of the finest
luxury vehicles on the planet.
The GLC is new, but faces off
against the same old adversaries
such as the BMW X3, Audi Q5
and Lexus NX.
It features Mercedes’ renowned
4MATIC AWD system and
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
is fitted with a 48V mild

of the company’s lauded MBUX

The GLC 300 features a 48V
electrical system and secondgeneration
Integrated Starter
Generator (ISG), providing
support off the mark and in
the low rev range. The ISG can
provide an additional 17kW of
power and 200Nm of torque.
It also sees the engine start
quickly and quietly, making
the transition from stop to start
barely discernible.
These systems ensure
smooth power from a 190kW
turbocharged four-cylinder
engine producing 400Nm of
torque. This ensures improved
strength and flexibility through
the rev range. Lively and
supremely refined, it shifts a
sold luxury SUV with verve
and purpose that is up a good
notch on the previous engine.
A sophisticated and highly
organized 9-speed automatic
effortlessly reels off the gear
changes with accuracy and

There is an abundance of
usable passenger space and a
generous 620 litres of cargo
carrying capacity. High-quality
cabin materials are to the fore
with Artico seats, upper dash

well balanced with good grip
and traction, and much of this
is down to how the suspension
and 4WD system work as one.
This isn’t a serious off-roader and
doesn’t claim to be. However, it
is well suited for tackling ski field
access roads, or traversing wellformed
