Pegasus resident, Paul Reti, was
humbled when he received aletter
from the GovernorGeneral’s office
asking if he would accept aNew
Zealand Order of Merit for his services
to JuJitsu.
‘‘The email and accompanying letter
arrived in midSeptember advising me
Ihad been nominated, and would I
accept it?’’ he says.
His wife, aformer Canterbury
representative netball goalkeeper,
Margaret Allison, said it was an
‘‘amazing honour’’ for her husband,
who is well known in the martial arts
community in New Zealand.
Mr Reti (Ngāpuhi) has contributed
to JuJitsu in New Zealand for 56
years.
He coestablished Fuji Ryu
Goshindon New Zealand in 1972, and
as a9th dan, is one of thecountry's
leading practitioners of this martial
art.
He opened three clubs in the
Christchurchregion and has taught all
over the country and in Australia.
Mr Reti was inducted into the New
Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fameand
received an Outstanding Service
Award by the New Zealand JuJitsu
Federation in 2013.
He is perhaps more well known as
the ‘‘fish and chip man of
Christchurch’’, having owned and
operated many fish and chip shops all
over the city and in Rangiora and
Amberley.
He has also earned respect for his
community work with mental health
and helping out managing maraes in
Canterbury.
He says when the official
notification came from Governor
General Dame Cindy Kiro, the only
part about it that worried him was the
advice not to tell anyone about it until
the New Year's Honours List was
officially published on December 30.
He had alot on during the last few
months of 2023, and that involved
travelling to Australiaand Auckland
to undertake black belt gradings,
attendinghis son’s 50th birthday
celebration also in Australia, and
hosting jujitsu seminars around the
country.
‘‘I didn’t have to worry about telling
anyone as Iwas too busy with
everythingelse.’’
He kept it quiet until the list was
published then, everyone started
calling up and congratulating him.
‘‘My son Clintonand daughter
Jessica called to say how proud they
were of their dad,’’ he said.
Today, the retiree still trains with
clubs locally and pursues his other
Service honoured ... Pegasus resident, Paul Reti, who became amember of the New
‘‘I trained originally as an interior
decorator, Margaret and Iwould strip
out the fish and chipshops we bought
and redecorate them inside and out to
make them very visible in the
communities.
‘‘Since I’ve retired to Pegasus, I’ve
started painting and drawing again
and am enjoying it,’’ he said.
