WINNING WORDS: Grace Hartley plays Scrabble nightly against enrolled nurse Natasha Patterson at Arvida St Albans.
AT 99, Grace Hartley still plays
her favourite board game,
Scrabble, every night – and she
hardly ever loses a game.
Like clockwork in the early
evening and after reading
her newspaper, the Arvida St
Albans wordsmith sets up the
board to play against nurse
Natasha Patterson.
Grace said they help each
other when they get stuck
finding a word but are still
competitive.
“I’m not afraid to use a few
risqué words to try and win
a game and make Tash laugh
a the same time. I do the big
words and Tash does the small
words.”
Grace took up playing
Scrabble about 10 years ago
when she moved into the
retirement village.
How Robyn and Jess
saved each other
ROBYN HAUGHEY decided
she wanted to be dog-free for
a while after her 14-year-old
labrador staffy cross Lou
passed away – and she was
diagnosed with an aggressive
form of breast cancer.
Curtains | Blinds | Shutters
But she only lasted three
weeks before telling her
husband Mark she needed
the companionship of a
dog to get her through the
invasive treatment. So they
headed to the city council’s
animal shelter the very same
day.
Said Haughey: “When
Jess was bought out into the
exercise area, I saw this cute,
scruffy, and charming little
terrier/jack russell cross
that ran around in circles
before dropping at my feet
then putting her front paws
around my leg to hug me as if
claiming me as her prize.”
American
targeted
vandals in
red zone
• By Rachel Mayer
TWO AMERICAN tourists are
desperate to flee New Zealand
just a few months into their
year-long trip after claiming
they were victimised by bullies
and vandals.
The final straw came in the
city’s red zone. Dorit Liss, 27,
and her partner Andre, 29,
said they have felt “nothing but
unsafe and unwelcome” since
they arrived from Colorado in
late October.
“We’d be in a designated, like
self-contained, parking spot
that was on the city council
website, like approved place to
be, and people would just come
by in the middle of the night,
honking and yelling obscenities
and banging on RV, banging on
other campers, you know, vans
and what-not in the parking lot,”
Liss said.
“Everywhere we’ve been
parked there has been some
instance of someone coming by
and honking at us.”
Liss posted to her YouTube
channel last week recounting an
incident in Christchurch that
cemented their decision to leave
the country.
PRIMARY school pupil
Richie Tu will be the
youngest musician on stage
at the annual Mitre 10 Sparks
outdoor concert in February.
The Medbury School
12-year-old will perform with
Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
Richie has been learning
music since he was six, and
first picked up a cello when he
was eight.
“What I love most about
playing the cello is the deep
rich sound and that when you
practise, you get to sit on a
chair,” he said.
As a founding member
of CSO Virtuosi, the youth
orchestra, Richie was elated to
be chosen to feature alongside
the CSO.
“Performing with Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra is
amazing because you get to
play with some of the top musicians
in New Zealand.”
Mitre 10 Sparks features
both traditional orchestral
masterpieces and contemporary
music like pop songs,
iconic film scores and cultural
collaborations.
Richie says he’s most looking
forward to “playing in front of
a huge public crowd and showing
my generation that music is
the key to life”.
Auckland-based conductor
David Kay, who is also MC for
the show, says he’s thrilled for
the young star.
“It’s a real delight to showcase
these young musicians on
stage, and for the audience, it’s
a special moment to connect
even closer with their local
community and then continue
to follow these young players
Grieving husband ‘forgotten’
Eighteen months after
his wife was murdered
by a violent mental
health patient on
community leave as
she walked home from
work, Nemani Tunidau
has heard nothing
from the health
board responsible
for her killer’s care.
Sam Sherwood reports
NEMANI TUNIDAU sits in
the living room of his Sockburn
home about a 10-minute walk
from where he had lived with his
wife, Laisa Waka Tunidau.
He vividly recalls dropping her
off at work and saying goodbye
for the last time on June 25, 2022,
before he drove to Waimate for a
day trip.
Laisa was on her way home
that afternoon when she was
murdered by a stranger, Zakariye
Mohamed Hussein.
The killer was an inpatient at
Hillmorton Hospital and had
10 years earlier been jailed for a
stabbing rampage, nearly killing
a man.
Following Laisa’s murder, both
Te Whatu Ora and the Ministry
of Health announced reviews
– one into Hussein’s care and
the other into the secure unit at
Hillmorton.
Eighteen months on, Tunidau
said he’d received no correspondence
from either agency.
“Nothing. Not one word.”
He feels his family has been
“forgotten”.
“I feel helpless,” he says.
“I want to ask them why in
the first place did they release
this guy out? They haven’t done
anything. They haven’t come and
said sorry for what has happened,
nothing.”
Hussein was granted community
leave from the hospital
about 2.30pm on June 25, 2022.
He then took a bus to Sockburn
and started walking to his family
home.
On the way he became angry
about some issues arising at the
TRAGIC: Eparama Tunidau flanked by his parents Nemani and Laisa Waka Tunidau before Laisa was murdered by
Zakariye Hussein on June 25, 2022. Right – A member of the public photographed Hussein during his frightening knife
rampage across Christchurch in 2012.
hospital. Earlier that day he was
frustrated with hospital staff, in
particular, because they removed
staples from a newspaper supplement
advertising real estate
that he had been examining and
circling properties he was going
to purchase.
He believed God was going to
give him money so he could buy
houses and marry staff. While
walking to his family home he
saw a man mowing his lawns
and decided to stab him. At his
family’s house, he took a steak
knife from the kitchen drawer
and put it in his pocket.
Once he went outside towards
his intended victim he saw
two men washing a car and
considered stabbing them.
However, he thought it was
too close to home and did not
want his own family to witness
anything. As he walked down
Cheyenne St, he saw a woman
walking. He took out the knife
and stabbed Laisa repeatedly as
she tried to protect herself.
He then threw away the knife
and walked away from the scene.
Said Tunidau: “If they kept
that guy on the facility nothing
would’ve happened. They should
be the ones who get charged . . .
they’re the ones whose responsibility
this is. They let him out.”
Tunidau pauses to compose
himself as tears begin to fall
when he talks about the moment
he received a text from his son
asking him to “please pray for
mum”.
The 11-year-old had heard the
sirens and seen emergency services
arrive, unaware it was his
mother who lay injured.
A police officer then knocked
on the door and spoke with him.
A relative was arranged to pick
him up and take him to their
address. He asked him what
happened, and was told his mum
was hurt and was on her way to
the hospital.
Tunidau had to break the news
that evening to the little boy that
his mum was dead. He then had
to tell their other three children.
Hussein was jailed for life, with
a minimum non-parole period
of at least 13 years in September
2022 after pleading guilty to
murder.
He also pleaded guilty to injuring
a nurse with a pen several
months before the killing.
In the days after Laisa’s murder
then Canterbury District Health
Board chief executive Peter
Bramley said a serious event
review would look into the care
Hussein was provided.
“I can assure the public that if
there are recommendations for
changes to be made as a result of
our own, or any external review,
these will be actioned.”
However, 18 months on,
Tunidau has heard nothing from
anyone at Te Whatu Ora, or the
Ministry of Health.
“I feel helpless. I’m in a foreign
land, if I was in Fiji I could just
go to every department,” he says.
“Everybody is silent, nobody is
talking.”
He also feels “forgotten”.
“They just forgot about me,
about what has happened. He’s
in jail, she’s dead, and the family
is struggling.”
The unanswered questions are
always in the back of his mind,
often making him angry as he
asks himself why it has taken so
long.
“If they kept that guy on
the facility nothing would’ve
happened. They should be the
ones who get charged . . . they’re
the ones whose responsibility
this is. They let him out.”
Te Whatu Ora Waitaha group
director of operations Jo Gibbs
said in a statement to the Herald
on Sunday she wanted to express
her condolences to Tunidau for
his loss and the “continuing
delays he has experienced”
waiting to hear more about what
happened.
after patient murdered wife
“On behalf of the team here in
Waitaha, I am extremely sorry
that a patient in our care killed
Mr Tunidau’s wife, and caused so
much grief, loss, and distress.”
She said the former health
board chief executive wrote to
Tunidau soon after the murder
to express his sympathies and
offered to meet him once reports
were made public.
Gibbs said that offer still stood,
but she would now be the person
to share the findings with him.
The coroner’s inquiry was
ongoing and the external review
was “also being progressed”.
“At this stage, we don’t have
a date when the review will be
finalised. This was an extremely
serious event and it’s important
that all relevant information is
collected, interviews are carried
out and facts checked as part of
the review process.
“This takes time and will
help ensure the findings are
meaningful, provide answers to
all those impacted by this tragic
event and identify opportunities
to improve the way we work in
future.”
Gibbs said she, along with
the senior clinical team, would
be “very happy” to meet with
Tunidau at any point if it was
helpful for him and his family.
Gibbs called Tunidau
last Friday after getting his
phone number from the NZ
Herald.
Tunidau said she apologised no
one had said sorry to the family
and was going to call him again
this week to arrange to see him
in person. He could not recall
having received anything from
the former DHB chief executive
at the time as it was “not a happy
time”, and he met a large number
of people.
A Ministry of Health
spokesman said the director
of mental health’s inspection
of Canterbury’s Mental Health
Services was ongoing, pending
the findings of Te Whatu Ora’s
review.
High-profile victim advocate
Ruth Money said the lack of
communication was “absolutely
FAMILY: Laisa Waka Tunidau (left), Sereana Dontea
Tunidau, Eparama Tunidau and Nemani Tunidau.
not good enough”.
“That exacerbates the harm
this delay is causing. There’s
absolutely no reason why Te
Whatu Ora haven’t reached out
to the family,” she said.
“There’s been nothing
health-like in their response
whatsoever.”
She said Te Whatu Ora’s
comments were “too little too late
and has only eventuated after the
Herald contacted them”.
“They should be ashamed of
how they are treating, or in fact
ignoring and revictimising this
poor family.”
Money said there was
“absolutely no reason” why the
review could not have been
completed and with the family
by now.
“How can Te Whatu Ora claim
to have learned or improved
anything if for 18 months the
report has not been completed?”
Money, who has been
advocating for the family,
said they were the “epitome of
humanity”.
“What they’re experiencing is
the absolutely other end of that
scale.”
Tunidau is still coming to
terms with his dual role as mother
and father since Laisa’s death.
He says he tries to be strong for
their four children, but admits
it has taken a toll on his health
with the stress of losing her and
trying to provide for the family.
He’s grateful for all the support
the family has received and says
their faith has helped them in
their grief.
He says the children seem to be
getting better, but the memories
and sadness just pop up at any
moment and bring it all back.
“It’s so hard to believe that it’s
happened. You can’t just take it
out of your mind.”
Tunidau wants to “stand
strong” for their children and
plans to continue working until
they have their own jobs and
statement at Hussein’s sentencing.
are set up for their own futures
in New Zealand. He says he will
likely then go back to Fiji to live,
not wanting to be a burden to his
children. He constantly misses his
wife, whom he married in 1998.
“The more I think about it, it
makes me weaker.”
On a cabinet in the living room
is some artwork bearing Laisa’s
“She was so lovely,”
Tunidau says as he recalls
the smiling face in the picture.
She’s my wife. I don’t know if
I’d ever find another woman
like that in my life.”
Buskers festival is back with fresh
GAKU IMPRESSED judges in
Australia and Spain before a
live audience, and now
Christchurch festival-goers can
decide whether the juggling
drummer has talent.
The Japanese performer is
among first-time international
acts performing at the 31st
edition of the Bread and Circus
World Buskers Festival, which
opens at a range of inner-city
venues tomorrow.
Billed as the world’s only
juggling drum busker, GAKU’s
fusion of dexterity and
percussion gained even more
prominence when he was an
entrant in Australia’s Got Talent
in 2022 and then the Spanish
equivalent last year.
GAKU, who has more than
four million followers on TikTok,
is joined by an American
contortionist, a British trick
cyclist, a two-man South
American “freak show” and
a dapper South Korean, who
harks back to the halcyon days
of Music Hall, in the contingent
of overseas-based entertainers
making their Christchurch
debuts.
Pint-sized contortionist Leah
Orleans, her skills honed by
coaches at Ringling Bros and
Barnum & Bailey Circus and
Cirque du Soleil, brings her Tiny
Big Girl! Show, a captivating
blend of flexibility, acrobatics and
clowning from Chicago.
A performer for 15 years,
following a family tradition,
Orleans strives to combine
classical technique with modern
humour.
Hilarity also underpins Wire
Attire, the stunt unicyclist Sam
Goodburn, a Brit whose biscuitthemed
and balance on a tight
wire has transported him from
the famed Edinburgh Fringe
Festival to Japanese schools and a
Central American orphanage in
Nicaragua.
ESCAPE: Dorit Liss and
her partner, Andre, are
desperate to leave the
country after seven
windows in their RV
were smashed in the
red zone.
•From page 1
Liss said after picking a
“quiet and abandoned” part
of Christchurch on January 8
to park their RV, she and her
partner were woken suddenly at
5.45am by the sound of smashing
glass.
“I bolted upright all at once.
I was made aware of what had
happened, the sleep-induced
delay of my response made it so
the car sped away completely
scot-free,” Liss said.
“It left me and Andre standing
in the middle of our shattered
home, I sobbed and shook.”
Seven windows in their
Daihatsu RV were smashed while
they were in the red zone. Police
confirmed they are investigating
the incident. The tourists’
struggled to get the van windows
fixed, given the age of the vehicle.
Liss said she has been
“inundated” with panic attacks
since the vandals struck the RV.
She said the incident “allowed”
her to accept what she had been
thinking ever since she arrived in
the country at the end of October
– that she hates it here.
Her bio on TikTok reads:
“New Zealand is killing us”. And
on Instagram she captioned a
recent post: “Special thanks to @
purenewzealand for making this
one hell of a ‘vacation’.”
‘NZ is killing us’
She responded to a comment
on a previous post about where
she may go next, saying “sure as
f*** not this rock in the sea”.
Liss, who was born in
Colorado, and her partner
are now desperate to leave
the country. Liss said she has
felt nothing but “unsafe and
unwelcome” since their arrival.
“It’s destroying me to continue
to push through each day. It’s
destroying Andre too.
“We both have each other but
that feels like a lame excuse to
keep trudging uphill in a place
where neither of us are happy.
“We’re going to be leaving as
soon as we can.” – NZ Herald
•From page 1
Said Haughey: “That was the
moment I knew I wanted to take
her home as she had chosen me.”
Jess is Haughey’s fifth dog
adopted from the animal
shelter in the last 30 years and
offers her so much more than
companionship.
“Going through chemotherapy
over the last year, with all its
horrid side effects, as well as a
double mastectomy has tested me
and my family to the limits, but
simply looking at Jess has filled
my heart with warmth, love,
satisfaction and a strong feeling
of contentment in that I know we
have saved each other,” she said.
“For all the countless days
where I lay on the couch feeling
rock bottom, Jess would climb up
and snuggle into me as if trying
to share and ease my pain and
discomfort. It worked and gave
me hope and belief that we could
beat this horrid disease together.”
Haughey has recently been
discharged from the oncology
department as her doctors are
satisfied that she is cancer free.
“Jess has played an integral
to this point and I love her
unconditionally.”
To anyone thinking about
getting a new dog, Haughey said
think seriously about saving a
dog from the animal shelter.
“Dogs end up at the shelter
through no fault of their own
and they all deserve to find a
forever home to receive the love,
responsible care, and affection
from their owners. That love,
care and affection is repaid in
abundance by the dogs and can
greatly enrich people’s lives.”
She said it is a hassle-free
process to visit the shelter and
assess the dogs that best suit your
needs and lifestyle.
“The staff are all heavily
invested in the process and
collectively they all want the
outcomes to be positive for both
the animal and the adopters.
When you take a dog from the
shelter, you know they are in
good health, vaccinated and the
costs are minimal,” she said.
‘Cancer does not choose those who
can afford help and treatment’
• By Daniel Alvey
LIZ MORRISH has a good
reason to make every day a good
day – she has been given only
four-to-five months to live.
The 68-year-old was diagnosed
with bowel cancer five years ago,
and after a number of operations
thought she was in the clear.
“December 2022 they discovered
it had metastasized into my
lungs so it was then stage four
terminal cancer.
“So I’ve had 13 rounds of
chemo, two different lots of
drugs, both stopped working.
“So there are no more options
for me drug-wise, unless you pay
for it which is exorbitant, and
no guarantees of making much
difference.
“It’s pretty tough,” Liz said.
Liz does not want to think
about the time she has left.
Instead, having lived in Lincoln
all her life on her family’s
150-year-old farm, she decided
to do something to help the community.
Liz and friends have organised
a game of walking netball on
Sunday at the Lincoln Event
Centre, with funds going to the
ACTIVE: Given four-to five months to live, Liz Morrish has
organised a fundraiser to help fellow cancer sufferers.
Selwyn Cancer Society.
“The fundraiser is about helping
those who are less fortunate
than I am, because cancer does
not choose those who can afford
help and treatment,” she said.
Always sporty, Liz has played
netball, badminton, tennis, and
more recently golf.
“I’ve got to keep doing something,”
she said.
Lincoln-based teams the
Lustys and Springlincs, which
have been playing netball locally
and at the masters games over
the past 25 years, will face off
again, this time for a good cause.
“We’ve been rivals and friends
for many years and over a couple
of wines we decided to do something.
“We’re all too old to actually
play netball so we decided to do
a walking netball, which is actually
a sport.”
Liz said she has received great
support from Lincoln businesses,
which have provided items for
raffles for the fundraiser.
“It has been fabulous, not one
single person turned me down.
It has been so generous so I’m
blown away and very humbled.”
Helping organise the afternoon
is Lincoln resident Carol
Townsend.
“The Lincoln community is
very caring . . . and Liz is such a
lovely person,” Carol said.
As well as the lung cancer, Liz
also has a tumour in her lower
groin and in the past fortnight
found out the cancer has spread
even further.
“Last week I lost the use of
my right hand completely . . .
ended up a night in hospital and
had a brain scan, and it has now
moved into my brain.”
This time there may be options
for surgery or radiation
treatment to regain control of
her right hand, but Liz is yet to
decide on whether she’ll pursue
them.
Along with the fundraiser Liz
has decided to get some bucket
list travel items ticked off.
“This week we’re going down
south. I’ve always wanted to go
to Doubtful Sound and have a
look around if they can get me in
a kayak . . . my ultimate one is to
go to Rarotonga.
“I’m making the most of
everything now, there’s no point
sitting at home saying ‘poor
me’, I have to create the best
memories I can from now on in.”
• The walking netball
fundraiser will be held
at 4pm on Sunday at
the Lincoln Event Centre.
Admission $10 for adults,
children free. An aftermatch
BBQ will be held at
The Famous Grouse from
5.30pm. BBQ cost $20
per adult, $12 for children
under 12. Donations can
Witnesses
grim killing
INVESTIGATORS probing
the grisly killing of a pregnant
shark on New Brighton Beach
are appealing for more witnesses,
while refusing to confirm whether
the knife-wielding individuals
have been identified.
The Ministry for Primary Industries
was alerted to the incident
after a graphic video showing the
school shark being cut open went
viral.
An adult and two boys were
involved in the incident, with MPI
animal welfare director compliance
and response Glen Burrell
saying they would be made aware
of their responsibilities under the
Animal Welfare Act.
There was no indication if
prosecution was an option but the
shark was not killed according to
Fisheries New Zealand guidelines.
Guidelines to minimise suffering
include severing its spine across
the back of its head, Burrell said.
“While there appears to be some
attempt to do this, we consider the
shark was made to suffer unnecessary
pain and distress.”
Some witnesses have been
interviewed. Others are asked to
THE PARENTS of a young girl
over the way police handled the
case.
Police have closed their
investigation, saying their
inquiries yielded no leads.
But the parents are concerned
about the investigation and
have laid a complaint with the
Independent Police Conduct
“I also would like to know
what they’ve actually done in
relation to this investigation,” the
girl’s father told The Star.
A man allegedly approached
the 8-year-old outside Lyttelton
Primary School on December 12,
saying her parents had told him
to pick her up.
She ran home when the
stranger did not know a
police did not check CCTV
COMPLAINT: The parents of a young girl who said a
stranger tried to pick her up as she walked home from
Lyttelton Primary School have laid a complaint over the
way police handled the case.
associated with. His daughter
said a white van was parked
where she was approached.
He said cameras on Norwich
Quay and the Lyttelton Tunnel
could have held clues.
The father says police initially
said they would check footage
from the cameras, but when
he made inquiries about the
progress of the investigation last
week, he was told the case was
“closed”.
The officer he was dealing with
wouldn’t say if the cameras had
been checked, he said.
“I said to her, ‘so what have you
guys actually done?’”
He said the officer would not
reveal what other inquiries had
been made.
“I don’t think they did
Police also refused to answer
specific questions from The Star,
including about the Norwich
Quay and tunnel cameras, or any
around Lyttelton.
The father also says he told
police about a grey vehicle which
could have been involved in
another girl being approached at
Opawa School, also in December.
The person associated with
that vehicle had similar features
to the man who his daughter said
approached her.
The father’s inquiries have also
revealed Lyttelton Tunnel CCTV
footage is deleted after about
seven days.
A NZTA Waka Kotahi
spokesperson said the footage is
deleted because of storage costs.
CCTV footage on Norwich
Quay is stored in a city council
database and is deleted after
about five weeks.
Police would not comment on
whether CCTV at the tunnel or
in other parts of Lyttelton were
checked for vehicles of interest
during the investigation or if
there were checks within seven
days of the alleged incident.
Te Kaha stadium
reaches new heights
TE KAHA – Canterbury’s
multi-use arena – has hit a new
milestone, with the first of 40
radial trusses being installed.
The trusses are large steel
structures that will support the
roof of the 30,000 seat arena.
“The individual steel components
are delivered to site and assembled
into large radial trusses.
Each truss weighs between 45
and 75 tonnes and will be lifted
into place by a 400-tonne crane
that we have brought in for
the job,” said Te Kaha project
delivery chief executive David
Kennedy.
The radial trusses and roof
structure will continue to be
built and installed over the next
12 months.
“This is an exciting milestone in
the project. Passers-by will start
to see the spectacular scale of the
arena as the 37m-tall trusses are
put in place. When finished, Te
Kaha will stand 48m at its highest
point, or around seven stories
high,” said Kennedy.
Construction of the $683
million stadium is due to be
completed midway through
2026 after years of planning
conjecture and stalled progress.
New wildfire research aims
Heist, humour
novels planned
for residency
CRAFTING a literary heist
novel will be the goal for author
Nic Low when he returns to
Canterbury University to take up
one of two Ursula Bethell Writers
in Residence placements.
“I’ll be working on a novel about
a group of Māori soldiers who,
heading home through London
after World War 1, decide to rob
the British Museum,” said Low.
“The idea is to write a literary
heist novel that explores how we
think about taonga as living ancestors,
and the legacy of colonial
museums. I guess I’m interested
in who gets to keep what they
stole, and why.”
Wellingtonian Pip Adam will
take up the residency in the
second half of the year. Adam will
work on a new novel that explores
the ways humour is weaponised.
“It’s kind of fuelled by all the
times I’ve been told I need to
‘lighten up’ or that it’s ‘just a
joke’. I have written a bit toward
the novel but I’m really looking
forward to challenging what I’ve
written and being open to the
possibility of starting over,” she
said.
to protect communities
CANTERBURY University
researchers are building models
to give more accurate predictions
of where large wildfires could
spread as they burn.
Associate
Professor in
atmospheric
dynamics,
Marwan
Katurji, who
was an expert
witness for the
Port Hills fire
and is studying
the Lake Ōhau
Marwan
Katurji
fire incident, is creating detailed,
localised modelling systems that
provide accurate predictions
of fire spread by incorporating
weather changes driving fire
behaviour.
The research comes as New
Zealand faces its worst fire season
for years.
Wildfire costs in New Zealand
since 2017 have reached $82
million.
“Previous studies assessing the
future wildfire risk in Aotearoa
New Zealand have found that
climate change will increase fire
risk in many regions, so being
able to get ahead of fires and
their movement will be crucial
FIRE MODELLING: Marwan Katurji, who was an expert
witness for the Port Hills fire, is creating detailed, localised
modelling systems to predict fire spread. PHOTO: RNZ
in protecting communities and
the environment,” said Katurji.
He said the models are
considered high-fidelity and
use atmospheric and spatial
predictions, meaning “they can
represent specific locations’ realtime
conditions, unlike other
models which use data that is
not tied to a specific location to
give a broad prediction of the
weather”.
Current models don’t account
for local variable weather conditions.
“We often think, ‘Why did
it not rain when the weather
forecast said it would?’ Well,
that’s because the models used
to predict the forecast underestimate
the processes causing
rain at the very local scale, so
the actual rain happening in
Canterbury isn’t represented in
those models.”
Katurji hopes the models can
be used in fighting wildfires and
in fire engineering.
“Ideally Fire and Emergency
New Zealand will use this technology
to predict or re-analyse
real-time movement of the fire
so they can get ahead of where it
is going, but fire engineers could
also use this to improve building
practices to protect against
fire by understanding how fire
moves and how turbulent wind
impacts fire behaviour.”
For understanding extreme
fire behaviour, the team has
been running fire whir experiments
in Twizel.
Said Katurji: “During these
world-first field-scale experiments
we created vortices, or fire
tornados. These are the most unpredictable
and undocumented
types of fire, so being able to
recreate them in a controlled
setting gives the models realworld
insights.”
The team also conducts fieldscale
fire experiments where
particular homogenous fuels,
like gorse, stubble wheat, and
wild pine are ignited and weather
and fire behaviour observed.
Currently there is no theory
for fire spread, but Katurji hopes
the research will help inform
and provide practitioners with
insights on fire movement
under different atmospheric
conditions to better protect our
environment from damaging
wildfires.
Dream of cycling around
A decade ago, James
Beatty had decided
he did not want to be
someone who worked
9-5 for the rest of his
life. So he packed up
his life and started
travelling across the
world. Reporter
Daniel Alvey finds out
how he does it
‘ONCE YOU learn to ride a
bicycle, you never forget’. This
was the saying author James
Beatty relied on when he set off
with his partner for an 11,000km
ride across Africa.
“I hadn’t owned a bike since I
was 14-years-old,” Beatty said.
His partner McKenzie Barney
was more prepared, having spent
the last five years cycling around
the world.
“I’d never had panniers on a
bike or anything with different
weight when it’s strapped onto
the front forks and back,” Beatty
said.
“It was definitely a learning
curve, she was all fit and ready to
cycle and I was not.”
Beatty, 33, has now released
a book about his six-month
adventure between October 2021
and March 2022 called The Road
South: An adventure
cycling the length of Africa.
Their journey took them
through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia,
Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe,
Botswana, Namibia, and
finished in Cape Town, South
Africa.
Beatty grew up in Leeston
before moving to Christchurch
for a couple of years.
In 2013, while living in the
city, Beatty said he had two
dreams back-to-back
which kicked off his
global adventure.
“In our early 20s,
we all think: ‘Is this
it?’ You’re doing
the exact same
thing as what
your parents
are doing at
that time.
“You
work a
40-hour
week, you
empty
the
dishwasher,
do
the laundry,
collect a
paycheck,
and pay
the bills,”
Beatty
said. On
the third
morning, he
woke up and told his partner at
the time he was going to travel
the world. A couple of months
later he was off and he has never
looked back.
Over the years that followed,
he has walked the length of New
Zealand, from Mexico to Canada,
through the High Andes, and
over the Himalayas.
Beatty has hitchhiked across
North and South America, Europe,
and Australia.
Before the Covid pandemic,
Beatty would only spend a maximum
of four to six weeks in one
place. During Covid he hunkered
down in Mexico
for months, the longest
he had stopped since
starting his journey.
Early on in the
African journey,
they quickly discovered
traversing
the continent was
proving to be
tricky.
While Egypt is
a common spot
for tourists,
they found
anywhere
beyond the
tourist areas is
somewhat offlimits.
“Day two we
got stopped and
the police said
we had to turn around and go
back to Cairo.”
Then the police escorted them
onto a train to Luxor, a city in
Upper Egypt. Once off the train,
they had a police escort for the
remainder of Egypt constantly
following them at about 10km/h.
“The police were with us the
whole time (on the train).
“For the rest of the time (in
Egypt) we had police behind us
in their vehicles.”
But if they thought
Egypt was interesting
they then rode into
a political coup
in Sudan.
“It was the
day before
my birthday,
and I had
teed up a
call with
mum and
dad back
in New
Zealand
and the
next day
there was
no phone
service.”
It
wasn’t
until later
in the
day they
realised
Prime
Minister Abdalla Hamdok had
been kidnapped and the military
had taken over, knocking out
all connectivity to the outside
world.
“When we cycled into the
capital Khartoum it was like
a ghost town . . . there were
military tanks and humvees
everywhere and just two white
people on bicycles.”
The pair then spent two
weeks in a hotel before flying to
Ethiopia due to the land border
being closed.
That was not the only close
call they had. In northern Kenya
they were targeted by a flying
spear. While cycling a teenager
ran out from behind tree and
threw a spear, which landed
about 30cm from Beatty’s back
tyre.
“I’m sure if he wanted to hit
us he could have, I think it was
more of a scare tactic to get us
out of their land,” Beatty said.
“It was safe to say we didn’t
stop riding for a while after that.”
The pair had mixed
experiences when cycling
through some of the more
remote parts of the continent.
“We were cycling through
villages that hadn’t seen white
people for over 10 years.
“There were teenagers who as
soon they saw us were yelling out
what translated from swahili to
english as ‘white devil’.
the world made a reality
“They would be yelling at our
bikes, calling them ‘white devil
horses’ and throwing stones at
us.”
To help them through some
communication issues they had
a ‘magic letter’. It explained what
they were doing in each of the
languages.
“For the most part if we’re
stopped by military or police we
would show them that, and they
would smile and tell us to head
on our way.”
If that failed they would keep
a certain amount of cash with
them for bribes when required.
Each day they were averaging
180-200km on their bikes, riding
for five or six days at a time then
taking a day off.
For the most part, they would
use a tent, with the treat being
brothels used by truck drivers.
“We would have to go and
talk to the girls and see if it was
possible to rent a room for a
whole night just to sleep.
“It would be a mattress
that would be pee stained, no
bed sheets, no pillowcases or
anything like that, but that was
almost our luxury.”
Traversing the continent, they
also found pockets of European
colonisation.
“In West Africa, down in
Namibia, it was the Germans.
We were in the capital city of
Windhoek (Namibia) and they
would have beer halls. So you
would have a beer garden where
you could get a pint of beer
and pork knuckle. Then a week
later you’d be back in mud hut
villages.”
When they arrived in
Capetown, South Africa, Beatty
was exhausted.
“Over six months of eating
two-minute noodles, and packets
of oatmeal we were pretty
skinny.”
“The energy levels were
dipping,” Beatty said.
The last few weeks they were
getting into summer, with the
temperature getting up to about
45 deg C. The hottest day was in
the Sahara Desert earlier on in
the trip – about 52 deg C.
HEAT: James Beatty riding through the desert in Sudan where temperatures would reach about 50 deg C. A common
site on the road were mud and thatched roof huts like this one in Zambia.
Beyond some sores from the
seat, the pair finished the ride in
good condition and with a good
tan.
“I was wearing sandals the
whole time, so the tops of my feet
were half African by the end.”
While they did not struggle
with getting water, the water
they were getting was like
something from a cow trough.
“We would have chlorine and
iodine tablets that we would
drop into the water.”
On the ride, they struggled
with the heat in some parts.
“There was heat exhaustion a
few times a week when we went
to the Sahara with 50 deg C plus
every day. You’d be on the verge
of vomiting or sh**ting your
pants because of the heat.”
Despite the tough going Beatty
loved it.
“I’d never been to Africa
before that. I’m glad I’ve gone
and now I’m itching to go back.
“I’m itching to get into the
centre of Africa and the Congo.”
Over the past decade, Beatty
has travelled to more than 100
countries but still has yet to see
it all.
“I’ve seen a little bit. I haven’t
been to Antarctica, I haven’t
travelled to China or Mongolia,
or Russia and Siberia.”
Beatty compared his travel
style to a buffet.
“Do you go to a buffet
restaurant and just eat the
chicken and corn soup? Or
do you go and have a taster of
everything and try the sushi, the
mac and cheese etc? So by the
end of it, you’ve at least had a
little taste test of everything.”
FINISH: McKenzie Barney
and James Beatty at the
end of their journey in Cape
Town, South Africa.
For the most part, Beatty lives
off the smell of an oily rag to
fund his adventures.
“Over the years I’ve picked up
either tree planting or carpentry
jobs.”
Every 18 months Beatty would
pick up two to three months’
worth of work.
“I really don’t work that
much. In the last 10 years, if you
calculated all the work, I would
probably have done less than two
years of work.”
Annually he lives off about
$8000-$10,000.
While Beatty has no
immediate plans for his next big
adventure he is planning to slow
down in the years to come.
“Now we’re getting older we
don’t have to travel the entire
time. So we could travel for
eight months and then stop for
months in a beachside town or
something.
“That’s what we’ve done for the
last year.”
The pair will be back in New
Zealand in April where they
will do a book tour and screen
Barney’s film Cycling the World.
All-rounder back in spotlight
with record-breaking innings
• By Sam Coughlan
OLD BOYS Collegians
all-rounder Dylan Hunter
isn’t holding out hope of an
immediate Canterbury recall
after a record-breaking innings
in the Christchurch Metro
premier competition.
Hunter slammed 180 runs off
just 86 balls against Heathcote
at Elmwood Park on Saturday,
including 15 fours and a record
16 sixes to set a new record for
the highest score in the history of
the one-day competition, breaking
the previous best of 178 set
by Sydenham’s Bevon Jacobs in
January last year.
But Hunter is not expecting
that to culminate in an immediate
return to domestic cricket.
He played four games for
Canterbury in October and
November while the side was in
the midst of an injury crisis, and
enjoyed the environment.
“The coaches are going to pick
and choose what’s best for the
team, and there’s a few people
back now from international
duties and back from injury, so I
don’t imagine that I’ll be in and
around it (the team).”
The 29-year-old was disappointed
with how he took his
chance when he got an opportunity
to play.
“I probably didn’t have the
same intent there as to what I
can normally bring,” Hunter
said.
He scored just 102 runs across
five innings in the Plunket Shield
• By Sam Coughlan
THE CHRISTCHURCH Metro
one-day competition ticks over
its halfway point this weekend as
the ladder starts to take shape.
A top-of-the-table clash between
East Shirley and Burnside
West Uni headlines the round
with both teams coming off wins
last week and occupying the top
spots on the ladder.
East Shirley will be armed with
Canterbury batter Leo Carter
who scored 141 not out in their
win over Sydenham last week,
while experienced captain and
all-rounder Matthew Hay will
boost Burnside.
Defending champions Old
Boys Collegians will look to get
back to winning ways against
St Albans, having gone down to
Heathcote last week.
Record-scoring Dylan Hunter
and Ford Trophy competitions
at strike rates of 32.6 and 42 runs
per hundred balls respectively.
But after being dropped from
the team when players returned,
Hunter went and quietly worked
on his game.
“I did some reflection and it
was probably a mix of going
away and working on my swing
and wanting to have a little more
intent,” he said.
That resulted in his whirlwind
knock against Heathcote.
will provide the spark for Old
Boys, while St Albans will look
to Matthias Paltridge to continue
his good form with the bat,
after he made 86 not out against
Lancaster Park.
Win-less Sydenham will have
the task of beating Heathcote,
who completed the highest
run chase in the competition’s
history last week when they
chased 341 against Old
Boys.
Tyler Lortan scored 144 in
that game and Heathcote will
hope the former Canterbury
representative continues to
impress.
Sydenham promoted allrounder
Raunaq Kapur to open
the batting last week and while
the move didn’t pay dividends
(he scored two runs) they will
back him to score in conjunction
with Bevon Jacobs.
Said Hunter: “I was really
pleased with the way I went
about each ball as well, maybe a
younger version of myself would
have hit a couple of sixes and got
carried away with it. But now it’s
just about playing each ball as it
comes.”
Hunter came to Christchurch
from Sydney in January last year,
and said a lack of further opportunities
was a part of the reason
for his move.
“I was playing second XI there
Lancaster Park and Merivale-
Papanui meet in the other game,
coming off a narrow win over
St Albans and a massive loss to
Burnside respectively.
Park batter Kalhan Marc
Challu top-scored 83 last
week in a season that has seen
some fine form from him, and
Merivale-Papanui will hope Bert
Medhurst shows his all-round
abilities again after taking four
wickets and scoring 37 in a
losing cause.
(for New South Wales), but for
me I felt like there was a lot of
depth and there were plenty
of players that could do what I
did.
“I had some friends that played
for Canterbury (Daniel Sams
and Mitchell Claydon) and they
spoke really highly of the set-up
here and of Christchurch as
a place.”
He said he sees himself being
in the Garden City for a long
time – even if he’s still completing
a physiotherapy degree back
home.
“I’ve done the bulk of my
university, still have a few placements
to do so I have to go back
(to Sydney) and tick those off
and keep that moving forward,”
he said.
“In the winters I’d love to
travel around and play cricket
and get my uni done, but for the
summers, I definitely would like
to be here and be involved for as
long as possible.”
Lucky golfer’s shot
at world stage
A CASUAL nine-hole game of
midweek golf with friends has
earned a Waimairi Beach golfer a
‘once in a lifetime’ shot at flying
off to Scotland to play in a world
invitational golf tournament
leading into the famed Open
Championship.
Karalyn Johnston was randomly
selected as a monthly
winner in a promotion being run
by Golf New Zealand. The highly
patronised event, called Make
Time Play 9, runs throughout
summer, and encourages golfers
of all ages and skill levels across
the country to participate in a
shorter format of the game.
Golfers go in the prize draw
by simply submitting their
nine-hole score card. As a
starter for winning the most
recent monthly draw, Johnston
won return airfares and
accommodation to Queenstown
to compete in the Make Time
Play 9 final event – being
held in March in conjunction
with the New Zealand Open
championship.
Johnston will join eight other
winners from around New
Zealand to tee up for nine holes
at Millbrook – with the two best
players going on to represent
New Zealand at the R&A ninehole
challenge on the eve of the
152nd Open Championship at
the Royal Troon Golf Club in
Scotland in July. The world final
will feature 42 nine-hole players
from 22 countries.
‘I feel a bit like Lydia Ko/
Ryan Fox. I’ll certainly be
hitting the driving range
and putting greens over
the coming months to get
in a bit of extra practice,
as there’s a lot on the
line for winning’ – Karalyn
Johnston
Johnston, who plays off a 22
handicap, says winning a trip to
Queenstown wasn’t on her mind
when playing in the qualifying
lucky draw nine-hole round.
“Just winning a trip to
Queenstown is an amazing
prize . . . let alone being in with
a chance to go and play the leadin
event for one of the world’s
most special golfing majors,”
the 67-year-old said, who was
introduced to the sport by her
golf-loving husband, Michael.
“I feel a bit like Lydia Ko/Ryan
Fox. I’ll certainly be hitting the
driving range and putting greens
over the coming months to get in
a bit of extra practice, as there’s a
lot on the line for winning.”
Golf New Zealand golf
development general manager
Thiem Nguyen said the Make
Time Play 9 initiative truly was a
“money can’t buy experience” for
every golfer enjoying nine-holes
over the coming months.
“For two lucky amateur Kiwi
golfers who play the sport for
the pure love of it, they will
have the opportunity to play on
the same golf course as Rory
McIlroy, Ryan Fox, and the best
professional golfers in the world
Players ‘raring’ to resume interclub early
• By Diane Keenan
CANTERBURY’S premier
players could not be happier to
get on court earlier than usual
for the second round of the
interclub competition.
Interclub is set to resume
two weeks earlier than last
season, with the women playing
tomorrow night and the men on
Saturday afternoon.
Cashmere captain Tim
Meredith said Tennis
Canterbury general manager
Bevin Johns has improved the
competition with some positive
changes.
“The new competition format
is great from a player perspective
– it means more tennis. We are
now raring to get back on court.
“Bevan is doing an amazing
job. He definitely has the locker
room support for what he is doing
for our sport.”
Johns said the interclub format
now includes five round robin
games followed by the semifinals
and final.
Tim and brother James
Meredith will be in the top
slots to play Te Kura Hagley
on Saturday at Te Kura Hagley.
The regulars are also back for
Cashmere, apart from Lucas
Evans who will be in Wellington
playing an International
Tennis Federation (ITF) junior
tournament. Evans’ regular
double’s partner Liam Barrett is
available and Tim McHarg who
was injured in his first match
earlier this season, has recovered
and will play doubles. In the
women’s competition Elmwood
captain Louise Oxnevad is
feeling positive about the
interclub competition. Elmwood
will play Shirley in a repeat of the
semi-final from the
pre-Christmas competition, in
which three of the five roundrobin
matches were cancelled
due to bad weather.
“I actually think this round
of the competition will be more
competitive,” Oxnevad said.
First round runners-up in the
men’s competition, Elmwood,
have 10 highly-ranked players
from which to select their
starting line-up. They take on
while Bishopdale play Burnside
Elmwood captain
Louise Oxnevad (left)
match against Shirley
tomorrow night.
at Bishopdale tomorrow night,
while Waimairi take on the
experienced Te Kura Hagley
featuring Michelle North Kelsen,
Beth Williamson, Petra Belzova
and Bailee Wilson.
Over the first round, a number
of women’s players juggled Caro
Bowl tennis in Auckland on
Friday night with interclub in
Christchurch. The Caro Bowl
competition is now finished.
However, for the next two weeks
several premier interclub players
will compete at ITF events in
Wellington and Auckland.
Oxnevad, Ruby Young
(Cashmere No 1) and Charlie
Byers (Waimairi No 1) have
McHarg, Tim
Meredith and
Johnny Mcharg will
take on Te Kura
Hagley on Saturday.
played at tournaments in
Christchurch and Wanaka over
the past month. Young won
the Wanaka Open singles and
combined titles, while Byers won
the doubles against Oxnevad and
her mother, Felicity. Young and
her Cashmere teammate, Lucia
Gale, also made the quarterfinals
in both the singles and
doubles at last week’s ITF junior
event at Wilding Park.
In the pre-Christmas finals,
Cashmere defeated Elmwood
in the first round of the men’s
competition. In the women’s
final, the experienced Elmwood
team beat the young Bishopdale
line-up.
weeK Three: Knuckling down and some tips on nutrition and weight loss
In week 3 the early excitement of the City 2 Surf project you have undertaken is wearing off. You may not have
sensed a big improvement in fitness levels yet and other commitments are getting in the way of training. After
your determined start the first doubts set in: “Can I do this?” This is the time to knuckle down. You need another
2 or 3 consistent weeks before you notice a significant improvement in fitness and energy levels and perhaps
some noticeable weight loss. Once that happens you will be well on your way. The best time of day to exercise is
early morning. It is good to get it out of the way and it will energise you for the rest of the day. Later in the day you
might just feel that little bit of fatigue or things crop up which will tempt you to say “tomorrow is another day….”
This can easily become habit and before you know it you have lost one or 2 training sessions every week. Of
course you might have a good reason for not being able to get out early. Other times of the day for your training
session are perfectly fine too but good planning is required. A light snack (toast/bread, fruit) before your early
morning training session is generally recommended to assist your blood sugar levels. This also applies if you
exercise later in the morning or afternoon. Breakfast or a meal after training will assist with replenishing energy
stores. Exercising before going to bed might keep you awake for a while if you are a light sleeper.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have
and 1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can still
talk. If you can’t talk you are going too fast
and you are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
If you need to lose some weight, then this
training programme will help you. But it
will only do so if you pay attention to your
nutrition at the same time. Healthy choices
include bread and or cereals for breakfast,
sandwiches or a salad for lunch and an evening
meal consisting of plenty of vegetables with
fish, chicken or lean meat. Pasta and rice are
also good staple foods for active people.
One helping and avoidance of rich desserts
will assist your weight loss. A healthy snack
mid morning and afternoon will help you get
through the day. Fruit is always an excellent
choice. Avoid fatty foods and snacks with
refined sugars. If you need help with your
nutrition or weight loss this might be a good
time to have a consultation with an expert, like
one of the Sports Clinic nutritionists.
YEAR
Multiple muscle cars to set
Geoff Omnet from Oamaru has
entered his very rare 1932 Ford.
Trillo Metals 34th Muscle Car Madness
January 27th-January 28th
A&P Showgrounds Rangiora
Early ‘70s Falcons are very popular with
many great examples at the show.
Excitement is building as not only the best, but also
the South Island’s largest automotive frenzy is about
to happen, says spokesperson Craig Stare.
Described as a “huge family event”, Trillo Metals
Muscle Car Madness is held on the last weekend of
the school holidays, only days before school resumes.
“So, if you are a ‘petrolhead’ of any age, this is
the place to go, smack in the middle of the South
Island at the A&P showgrounds in the beautiful
country town of Rangiora, just 27 kilometres from
Christchurch,” Craig says.
The show will take place on the weekend of January
27 and 28 from 9am to 4pm, while the lead-up week
will see the town buzzing with the sound of welltuned
V8 engines and the sight of glistening paint and
chrome from 6pm on Wednesday night.
Amongst the entries are 11 cars from Kaitaia, 26
cars from the Toy Shed in Rotorua, a contingent from
Rocket Speed Equipment in Hamilton, and even a
couple of cars from Bluff.
“The Saturday is always the bigger day, weather
dependent of course,” Craig says, “and regularly has
1500 cars-plus on display, with Sunday having 800 to
900 cars. Don’t come late on Sunday as some out-oftowners
get away early.”
This year’s drawcards are Trevor Halstead’s “bullet
nose” radical custom Studebaker, which Craig notes
has every panel changed from the original and is a
contender to take out some of the awards.
“It is currently the top custom in New Zealand.
Trevor does all the work himself in a modest
shed in the Waikato and has a fleet of owner-built
Studebakers.
“The other drawcard is the top hot rod in the
country belonging to Greg Haliday. His 1941 Willys
coupe is world class. It took eight years to build by
Rocket Speed Equipment. It was shipped to California
to be upholstered by the famous Gabe and went on
to enter the very exclusive Detroit Autorama where it
won its class.
“This is the first public showing of the car and
its only South Island appearance. The 800-plus
Another new car, this time a chopped 1936
Plymouth coupe from Nelson.
As Craig explains, many specialised shops use the
event to promote their business and display cars they
have built and to show potential customers what can
be done.
Other group displays are from car clubs such as
Falcon, Holden, VW classic and Hot Rod, with many
running membership drives during the show. In
addition, a huge van display around an American
diner backdrop includes vans from all over New
Zealand.
Specialised car insurance companies are on site
such as Classic Cover insurance to give exhibitors a
quote on insuring that piece of precious metal. Also
on site to give your car that finishing touch are some
of the country’s top pin-stripers in action, free-hand
striping your entire car or even children’s pedal cars.
The Stadium Finance-sponsored burn-out
competition is one of the most popular events,
starting just after 1pm each day, with the finals on
Sunday. If you get to the burn-outs early, ‘Sign of the
Firebird’ plays from around 12 noon at the pad. If it
rains on Saturday, the burn-outs will be on for longer
on Sunday.
The rockabilly pageant will take place on Saturday
in the big concrete shed, which was trialled last year
due to rain. The shed was perfect for this event, Craig
says, so will be held there again this year. All classes
are catered for, even classes for the kids – Lil Miss
Rockabilly, and Koolest Lil’ Dude.
“For wives and partners, there is even a class for
‘your man’ so he won’t get bored,” he adds.
“On the music front there are three Australian
Rockabilly acts this year. The amazing Rockadees,
Queen of Rockabilly, Miss Cherry Devine and Hellcat
III. Other bands include the Recliner Rockers from
Auckland and Sinner Man Saint from Wellington,
amongst others.”
There is a wide range of food trucks on site, and
a huge number of trade and craft stalls. The official
event T-shirts sell out quickly and can be purchased
at $30 from the blue T-shirt container. Admission is
adults $20, children under 16 free and a two-day pass
(public hours only) is available at the gate for just $30.
Craig advises: “Keep in mind, each day has a lot of
different cars and music. This huge family event has
everything you could imagine. It also brings three to
four million dollars into the community.”
For further information, call Correna on 027 545
In Ōtautahi Christchurch you are spoilt for choice when
wining and dining. Right in the heart of all the busking action
is Riverside Market – an indoor market and one of Ōtautahi’s
most loved foodie spots.
If you are heading to an evening show and fancy making a
night of it, head to The Terrace for world-class dining, set
along the beautiful Ōtākaro, Avon River or head along to the
chic Skylark Bar & Lounge at Christchurch Casino.
Check out New Regent Street. It boasts an abundance of
unique restaurants, vibrant bars and indulgent dessert spots.
You might even catch the tram running down the middle of the
street. It’s as iconic to Christchurch as it gets!
