ESCAPE: Dorit Liss and her partner, Andre, are desperate to leave the country after seven windows in their RV were smashed in the red zone. •From page 1 Liss said after picking a “quiet and abandoned” part of Christchurch on January 8 to park their RV, she and her partner were woken suddenly at 5.45am by the sound of smashing glass. “I bolted upright all at once. I was made aware of what had happened, the sleep-induced delay of my response made it so the car sped away completely scot-free,” Liss said. “It left me and Andre standing in the middle of our shattered home, I sobbed and shook.” Seven windows in their Daihatsu RV were smashed while they were in the red zone. Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. The tourists’ struggled to get the van windows fixed, given the age of the vehicle. Liss said she has been “inundated” with panic attacks since the vandals struck the RV. She said the incident “allowed” her to accept what she had been thinking ever since she arrived in the country at the end of October – that she hates it here. Her bio on TikTok reads: “New Zealand is killing us”. And on Instagram she captioned a recent post: “Special thanks to @ purenewzealand for making this one hell of a ‘vacation’.” Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz ‘NZ is killing us’ She responded to a comment on a previous post about where she may go next, saying “sure as f*** not this rock in the sea”. Liss, who was born in Colorado, and her partner are now desperate to leave the country. Liss said she has felt nothing but “unsafe and unwelcome” since their arrival. “It’s destroying me to continue to push through each day. It’s destroying Andre too. “We both have each other but that feels like a lame excuse to keep trudging uphill in a place where neither of us are happy. “We’re going to be leaving as soon as we can.” – NZ Herald •From page 1 Said Haughey: “That was the moment I knew I wanted to take her home as she had chosen me.” Jess is Haughey’s fifth dog adopted from the animal shelter in the last 30 years and offers her so much more than companionship. “Going through chemotherapy over the last year, with all its horrid side effects, as well as a double mastectomy has tested me and my family to the limits, but simply looking at Jess has filled my heart with warmth, love, satisfaction and a strong feeling of contentment in that I know we have saved each other,” she said. “For all the countless days where I lay on the couch feeling rock bottom, Jess would climb up and snuggle into me as if trying to share and ease my pain and discomfort. It worked and gave me hope and belief that we could beat this horrid disease together.” Haughey has recently been discharged from the oncology department as her doctors are satisfied that she is cancer free. Thursday January 18 2024 The Star NEWS 9 Jess ‘gave me hope we could beat this disease together’ “Jess has played an integral part in my life to get me to this point and I love her unconditionally.” To anyone thinking about getting a new dog, Haughey said think seriously about saving a dog from the animal shelter. “Dogs end up at the shelter through no fault of their own and they all deserve to find a forever home to receive the love, responsible care, and affection from their owners. That love, care and affection is repaid in abundance by the dogs and can greatly enrich people’s lives.” She said it is a hassle-free process to visit the shelter and assess the dogs that best suit your needs and lifestyle. “The staff are all heavily invested in the process and collectively they all want the outcomes to be positive for both the animal and the adopters.
