The Star Thursday January 18 2024 12 NEWS Witnesses sought after shark’s grim killing INVESTIGATORS probing the grisly killing of a pregnant shark on New Brighton Beach are appealing for more witnesses, while refusing to confirm whether the knife-wielding individuals have been identified. The Ministry for Primary Industries was alerted to the incident after a graphic video showing the school shark being cut open went viral. An adult and two boys were involved in the incident, with MPI animal welfare director compliance and response Glen Burrell saying they would be made aware of their responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act. There was no indication if prosecution was an option but the shark was not killed according to Fisheries New Zealand guidelines. Guidelines to minimise suffering include severing its spine across the back of its head, Burrell said. “While there appears to be some attempt to do this, we consider the shark was made to suffer unnecessary pain and distress.” Some witnesses have been interviewed. Police have closed their investigation, saying their inquiries yielded no leads. But the parents are concerned about the investigation and have laid a complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Authority. “I also would like to know what they’ve actually done in relation to this investigation,” the girl’s father told The Star. A man allegedly approached the 8-year-old outside Lyttelton Primary School on December 12, saying her parents had told him to pick her up. The father also says he told police about a grey vehicle which could have been involved in another girl being approached at Opawa School, also in December. The person associated with that vehicle had similar features to the man who his daughter said approached her. The father’s inquiries have also revealed Lyttelton Tunnel CCTV footage is deleted after about seven days. A NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson said the footage is deleted because of storage costs. CCTV footage on Norwich Quay is stored in a city council database and is deleted after about five weeks. Police would not comment on whether CCTV at the tunnel or in other parts of Lyttelton were checked for vehicles of interest during the investigation or if there were checks within seven days of the alleged incident.
