PRIMARY school pupil
Richie Tu will be the
youngest musician on stage
at the annual Mitre 10 Sparks
outdoor concert in February.
The Medbury School
12-year-old will perform with
Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
Richie has been learning
music since he was six, and
first picked up a cello when he
was eight.
“What I love most about
playing the cello is the deep
rich sound and that when you
practise, you get to sit on a
chair,” he said.
As a founding member
of CSO Virtuosi, the youth
orchestra, Richie was elated to
be chosen to feature alongside
the CSO.
“Performing with Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra is
amazing because you get to
play with some of the top musicians
in New Zealand.”
Mitre 10 Sparks features
both traditional orchestral
masterpieces and contemporary
music like pop songs,
iconic film scores and cultural
collaborations.
Young cellist to perform with CSO
Richie says he’s most looking
forward to “playing in front of
a huge public crowd and showing
my generation that music is
the key to life”.
Auckland-based conductor
David Kay, who is also MC for
the show, says he’s thrilled for
the young star.
“It’s a real delight to showcase
these young musicians on
stage, and for the audience, it’s
a special moment to connect
even closer with their local
community and then continue
to follow these young players
through their careers,” he said.
Developers drop anchor
A LUXURY yacht owned by
the linchpins of Christchurch
SMOOTH SAILING: This opulent multi-million dollar yacht has been put on the market
by the co-founders of Christchurch-based housing developers, Williams Corporation.
the yacht was on 141 watchlists.
Williams Corporation assistant
regional sales manager Alex
Prouse, who is co-ordinating
the sale, said there had been a
reasonable amount of inquiry
“from within New Zealand
and outside”.
“As you can appreciate with
any asset sale there is a process
you’ve got to follow to make
sure the deal works for both the
owner and buyer,” he said.
Victoria Cross
recipient Jack Hinton’s
memorial restored
The memorial to Christchurchborn
Victoria Cross recipient
Jack Hinton on land near Anzac
Drive in Bexley has been tidied
up by city council workers
after a complaint from the New
Zealand Remembrance Army,
a charity dedicated to restoring
graves of war veterans. The site,
which features a boulder with
an inlaid plaque – the tribute to
Hinton, who was awarded the
VC for bravery while fighting
the Germans in Greece during
WW2 – had been overgrown
with weeds and long grass. A
crew tended to Jack Hinton VC
Old Lyttelton church
commemorated
A monument now
commemorates the site of
Lyttelton’s St Joseph the Worker
Church, which was demolished
after the February 22, 2011
earthquake. The church had
provided a place of worship for
the town’s Catholic community
from 1865. The St Joseph’s
Memorial Trust formed five
years ago to preserve the
church’s history and a significant
goal was achieved last weekend
when a memorial was unveiled
adjacent to steps leading to the
church on Winchester St.
