In 2021,amendments were made to the MTPAct, extending the gestational limit forabortion and expanding access tosafe and legal abortion services.These changes aim to ensurewomen's reproductive rights andimprove access to healthcareservices. There are specific conditionsthat need to be met for a legalabortion in India. According to theMedical Termination of Pregnancy(MTP) Act, some of the conditionsinclude factors like the gestationalage of the pregnancy, the woman'sphysical or mental health, and thepotential risk to the woman's life if thepregnancy is continued. Theseconditions are assessed by healthcareprofessionals to determine if a legalabortion can be performed.In India,the gestational limits for abortion varydepending on the specificcircumstances. Generally, abortionscan be performed up to 20 weeks ofgestation. However, in certain caseswhere there is a substantial risk tothe woman's life or if there are foetalabnormalities, the gestational limitmay be extended beyond 20 weeks.46
