New fire station or school proposed for section
A LARGE SECTION of land
owned by the city council since
1913 - and set aside for the
expansion of Diamond Harbour
- could be the site of a new fire
station or school.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand wants to build a new
fire station on the land,
while Nōku Te Ao Charitable
Trust has also registered its
interest in buying some of the
land to develop a new school.
The 39.02ha block at 27
Hunters Rd and 42 Whero Ave is
currently being used for grazing,
with bush regeneration taking
place in three gullies, said city
council head of city growth and
property Bruce Rendall.
The interest from FENZ and
Nōku Te Ao came after the
council sought community
feedback on the future of the land
in 2021.
Rendall said the feedback
showed the community wanted
to be involved in planning
for the future of the land
and for the gullies to be
protected.
“We know the community
values the gullies and wants
them to be retained, with native
trees and walking tracks,”
Rendall said.
“Council staff think this is a
good use for the gullies and this
will be reflected in our draft
spatial plan, which is under
development.”
Staff are also preparing
technical reports to support
the development of the spatial
plan for the site. Consultation
on the two proposals opened on
Monday.
“Having received proposals for
parts of the block, we need
to seek community feedback,
with a view to making a decision
on those sites before the full
draft spatial plan is ready,”
Rendall said.
How Robyn and Jess saved each other
ROBYN HAUGHEY decided
she wanted to be dog-free for
a while after her 14-year-old
labrador staffy cross Lou passed
away – and she was diagnosed
with an aggressive form of breast
cancer.
But she only lasted three weeks
before telling her husband Mark
she needed the companionship
of a dog to get her through the
invasive treatment. So they
headed to the city council’s
animal shelter the very same day.
Said Haughey: “When Jess
was bought out into the exercise
area, I saw this cute, scruffy,
and charming little terrier/jack
russell cross that ran around in
circles before dropping at my
feet then putting her front paws
around my leg to hug me as if
claiming me as her prize.”
Said Haughey: “That was the
moment I knew I wanted to take
her home as she had chosen me.”
Jess is Haughey’s fifth dog
adopted from the animal
shelter in the last 30 years and
offers her so much more than
companionship.
“Going through chemotherapy
over the last year, with all its
horrid side effects, as well as a
double mastectomy has tested
me and my family to the limits,
but simply looking at Jess has
filled my heart with warmth,
love, satisfaction and a strong
feeling of contentment in that I
know we have saved each other,”
she said.
“For all the countless days
“(Jess) gave me hope and belief that we could beat this
horrid disease together.” – Robyn Haughey
where I lay on the couch feeling
rock bottom, Jess would climb
up and snuggle into me as if
trying to share and ease my pain
and discomfort. It worked and
gave me hope and belief that we
could beat this horrid disease
together.”
Haughey has recently been
discharged from the oncology
department as her doctors are
satisfied that she is cancer free.
“Jess has played an integral
part in my life to get me
to this point and I love her
unconditionally.”
To anyone thinking about
getting a new dog, Haughey said
think seriously about saving a
dog from the animal shelter.
“Dogs end up at the shelter
through no fault of their own
and they all deserve to find a
forever home to receive the love,
responsible care, and affection
from their owners. That love,
care and affection is repaid in
abundance by the dogs and can
greatly enrich people’s lives.”
She said it is a hassle-free
process to visit the shelter and
assess the dogs that best suit
your needs and lifestyle.
“The staff are all heavily
invested in the process and
collectively they all want the
outcomes to be positive for both
the animal and the adopters.
When you take a dog from the
shelter, you know they are in
good health, vaccinated and the
costs are minimal,” she said.
• Dogs available for
adoption from the Animal
Shelter are posted on the
city council Facebook
page. Additionally, give the
shelter a call on 941 7948
Feedback sought on land use proposals
• From page 1
“I’d like to reassure those who
gave us feedback in 2021 that
neither the fire station proposal
nor the school proposal involves
any of the gullies,” said Rendall.
The proposed fire station and
school will form part of the draft
spatial plan. Rendall says the full
draft spatial plan will go out for
separate consultation when it is
completed.
FENZ is eyeing about 0.5ha of
the block to move the Diamond
Harbour Fire Station.
The Diamond Harbour volunteer
brigade’s existing station at
89 Marine Drive is a registered
earthquake-prone building and
must be brought up to the building
code or demolished by April
24, 2025.
The section of land FENZ want
to build on is across the road
and around the bend from the
current site, between 90 and 110
Marine Drive.
FENZ district
commander
Dave Stackhouse
says the proposed
new building
would meet
100 per cent of
the New Building
Standard.
“It will be a
fit-for-purpose,
resilient, future-proof facility,
Dave
Stackhouse
incorporating decontamination
facilities, standby generator,
PPE locker room and a training
room,” he said.
“It will meet all statutory,
regulatory and organisational
requirements, with the growth
of Diamond Harbour and surrounding
communities in mind.”
On average, the brigade attends
100 call-outs a year, with
65 per cent being medical events,
he says. For this reason, a helipad
is included in the proposed
development.
“At present, when a helicopter
is needed in a medical emergency,
it lands on the sports ground or
Laurenson Park,” Stackhouse said.
“About once a month, the crew
needs to assist in setting up a
landing zone for the helicopter,
so it would be a huge improvement
to have a helipad onsite.”
The city council has also been
approached by Nōku Te Ao
Charitable Trust with a proposal
to buy 8ha of the block.
The trust, acting on behalf of
Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, wants
to set up a designated character
school, Te Pā o Rākaihautū (Te
Pā) on the site.
Designated character schools,
in this case a Māori medium
school, are state schools. Alongside
the New Zealand curriculum,
they develop their own
aims, purposes and objectives
and teach values aligning with
their philosophy or culture.
Te Pā was established in 2015.
It has a temporary campus at
the former Linwood Intermediate
School site on McLean
St, and has been looking for a
permanent city site for the past
10 years. If the proposal is approved,
the school will run over
two sites – a city site (yet to be
determined) and the Diamond
Harbour site.
Te Pā o Rākaihautū chair
Rangimarie
Parata Takurua
said different
learning opportunities
would be
offered at each
site. While many
of its students
live in the city,
she says the
school’s whakapapa
is rooted on
Rangimarie
Parata
Takurua
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula.
“At the core of Te Pā’s philosophy
is place-based learning
centred around the environment
and cultural identity,” she said.
“There are few places more
relevant or better suited to this
than on Te Pātaka o Rakaihautu,
surrounded by our five rūnanga
communities at Rāpaki, Koukourarata,
Under the proposal, Te Hapū
o Ngāti Wheke would own the
land, and lease part or all of it to
the Ministry of Education.
Rendall says it’s important to
get feedback from the community
on the two proposals.
“Feedback we receive from
the Diamond Harbour community
and residents of the wider
Christchurch district will help
the elected council decide whether
to support the two proposals,”
he said.
People across Banks Peninsula
and Christchurch have until
5pm on February 19 to give the
city council feedback on the
proposals.
Cooperative Care Training for Stress-Free Pet Healthcare
Does your dog turn into an escape artist
at the mere sight of nail clippers? Do
attempts to clean their ears or brush
their teeth feel like an ongoing battle? If
you thought there was no way to achieve
these tasks, we have another solution –
Cooperative Care training. This approach
focuses on building trust, cooperation,
and positive relationships between pets
and their owners, aiming to make vet
visits, grooming, and other essential
healthcare tasks a stress-free and enjoyable
experience for both pets and their human
companions.
Banish Stress with Cooperative Care
The core principle of Cooperative Care training
is to eliminate stress from your pet’s health care
routines. By associating these activities with
positive experiences, such as tasty treats and
gentle handling, your pet learns to embrace vet visits,
grooming sessions, and other necessary healthcare tasks
without anxiety.
Build a Stronger Bond through Enhanced
Communication
Cooperative Care isn’t just about your pet; it’s about
strengthening the bond between you and your furry
companion. Through positive reinforcement and clear
communication, you’ll develop a deeper connection
with your pet. Imagine a scenario where your pet
willingly participates in their care routines, creating an
environment of trust and understanding.
Unlock the Secret to Improved Well-Being
Pets comfortable with healthcare procedures tend to be
healthier and happier overall. Cooperative Care training
ensures that your pet not only tolerates but actively
enjoys these routines, contributing to their overall wellbeing.
From routine vet check-ups to
grooming sessions, the positive associations formed
during training lead to a happier and healthier pet.
Empowering Pet Owners with Valuable Skills
Beyond benefiting the pets, Cooperative Care training
empowers pet owners with valuable skills to confidently
and effectively care for their furry friends. Owners learn to
navigate healthcare routines with ease, ensuring that their
pets receive the care they need without
unnecessary stress or resistance.
Introducing Station Training: Your Pet’s
“Consent” to Care
A key component of Cooperative Care
training is station training, a practice
that involves teaching pets to willingly
participate in their care routines. By
introducing the concept of giving consent
to handling, station training sets the
foundation for positive interactions
between pets and their owners during
healthcare procedures.
In station training, pets learn that being
on their husbandry station (something
as simple as a mat or a towel reserved
specifically for this purpose) results in tasty
treats, creating a positive association. Once
they eagerly anticipate the station, you
can gradually introduce handling activities
such as massaging their paws, looking into
ears, or lifting the lip. The key is to stop handling if your
pet gets off the station, ensuring a positive experience
and gradual acclimatisation. The concept of consent in
handling, although relatively new in companion animal
training, has been successfully practiced by zoo staff for
years with a variety of animals.
Kowhai Vet Clinic invites pet owners to explore the world
of Cooperative Care training, where pets become active
and willing participants in their own care, leading to a
lifetime of positive and stress-free healthcare experiences.
The clinic is committed to advancing the well-being
of pets and fostering stronger bonds between owners
and their furry companions through innovative and
compassionate care.
McKenzie aims for Paralympics
• By Dylan Smits
MCKENZIE DRAGE is in
the pool six days a week in
preparation for the New Zealand
championships in April, with
a long-term goal of competing
at the Los Angeles 2028
Paralympics Games.
The 19-year-old from Mc-
Queens Valley was born with
Apert syndrome, but it has never
stopped her from pursuing her
dreams.
“I am very determined and like
to face challenges with a positive
mindset,” she said.
Apert syndrome causes fusion
of bones in the fingers, toes, and
head and neck. Various surgeries
were needed during Drage’s infancy
and childhood to improve
her quality of life.
“School and social life have
been a challenge but I’ve never
let my disability hold me back
from setting goals and achieving
them,” she said.
When swimming, Apert
syndrome mainly affects Drage’s
range of movement as she cannot
fully extend her arms, neck or
shoulders.
“I have limited reach and kicking
ability, but I follow a daily
stretching programme to try and
develop my flexibility.”
Drage, who attended Hagley
College until graduating last year,
lives on the family farm with her
parents and older brother. Farm
life has taught her how to work
hard.
“I’ve learned how to get jobs
done and be organised with my
time.”
The family owns 80 free range
chickens, and Drage is partly
responsible for selling their
eggs to customers in
Christchurch.
She also works part time as a
lifeguard at Jellie Park.
THE RIGHT
LANE:
McKenzie
Drage with
the award
qualifying her
team for last
year’s Oceania
tri series.
Drage’s longterm
goal is
to compete
in the 2028
Paralympics.
She has always enjoyed
swimming and started
competing in year 11.
“Being able to swim well helps
me feel confident in any water.
I really like the discipline of
training hard and feeling fit and
healthy.”
Drage is part of the Aquagym
Swim Club where she is coached
by Emma Smith.
In September, she represented
New Zealand for the first time at
the Oceania tri series swimming
‘Everyone has differences and strengths, and life is about
making the most of what you have’ – McKenzie Drage
championships in Hastings.
She won the 100m individual
medley, achieving a personal
best of 1min 52.4sec.
“I feel really satisfied when I
get a personal best time in a race
I have been focusing on,” she
said.
“They don’t come easy though,
there’s a lot of hard work and
sometimes you get disappointed
when you don’t make a time.”
Drage is training hard ahead
of the New Zealand swimming
championships in April.
With her eyes on the future,
Drage wants to achieve
qualifying times for the world
para series in Melbourne next
year and then the Los Angeles
2028 Paralympic Games.
Being a paraswimmer has
given her amazing opportunities,
she said, like meeting her hero,
Paralympian Sophie Pascoe,
and being able to represent
New Zealand in international
competitions.
“Everyone has differences
and strengths, and life is about
Cultivating
food security
and gardening
know-how
• By Dylan Smits
THE MANAGER of a
community garden in Sumner is
taking crop growing back to its
roots with the goal of creating a
self-sustaining food source.
Gavin Hawke, 54, has a passion
for horticulture, and he’s
using his skills in an effort to
increase local food security.
‘There’s nothing simpler in life
then actually building soil and
growing something. We’re trying
to show people how easy it is to
grow naturally.”
He Mara Kai – meaning ‘The
Food Garden’ – is a 2000m 2
section located on the corner of
Paisley St and Wakefield Ave.
It follows two key horticultural
principles
that guide it towards being
a fertile and self-sustaining food
source, said Hawke.
The first is hügelkultur or
“mound culture”, a technique
where a mound constructed
from decaying wood and plant
materials is used as a plant bed.
“Wood will take 20 years to
break down and you won’t need
any fertiliser,” he said.
“The wood underneath works
as a slow release nutrient. It also
acts as a sponge for water.”
No digging is required.
“It’s about how to grow food
with the least amount of work.”
The second technique, permaculture,
is an approach to
land management where plants
are allowed to grow freely in an
unstructured layout.
Hawke said this
encourages a
self-seeding garden, which will
eventually require little human
maintenance.
“We just want to help nature
take its natural course. We’re
pretty unique here because
there’s no structure really.”
The garden has 40 mounds of
different sizes which grow a wide
range of fruits, vegetables and
flowers.
Except for the first time a new
seed is planted, the garden does
not buy seeds.
“With permaculture,
everything self-seeds,” Hawke
said.
He started developing
the garden
on land he
leases from the city council,
opposite his home, in June 2022.
A software designer by day, he
spends his evenings and weekends
managing the garden.
“There’s so much food there.
At any time of the year there’s
always something to eat.”
With the help of two volunteers,
Hawke is developing high
quality soil for the garden with
locally sourced compost.
They collect horse manure,
green bin waste, and coffee
grinds and food scraps from
local cafes.
“Eventually we will end up
with beautiful soil that is filled
with nutrients.”
Hawke’s long-term goal is
to increase food security and
demonstrate the effectiveness of
mound culture and permaculture.
“That garden could easily
self-sustain 20 different families.”
Expanding his methods to
other empty land in Sumner
could increase food security even
further, Hawke said.
He wants the garden to
become a more collaborative
effort in the future, with more
volunteers.
“People who can’t grow
or haven’t got the space are
welcome to come and help out
and enjoy the harvest.”
• People interested
in volunteering are
encouraged to head
along to the garden on
weekends
GREEN THUMB: Gavin Hawke manages the He Mara Kai community garden in Sumner. He’s motivated by increasing food security and spreading
awareness of mound culture and permaculture.
CREATIVE: Young
painter Rosie
Johnson-Prior’s
abstract art, which
is inspired by
people close to
her who passed
away last year, will
be featured at
Rei Gallery’s latest
exhibition.
• By Dylan Smits
A PAINTER with down syndrome is
bringing her abstract art to a Lyttelton
exhibition.
Rosie Johnson-Prior from Taylors Mistake
is a 20-year-old artist with dreams of
opening her own workshop.
“She likes to be able to show people
what she can do and how she can express
herself through art,” said her mother,
Suzanne Johnson.
Rei Gallery owner Damian Mackie
created the exhibition as a way for intellectually
disabled artists to display their
canvas work.
The exhibition is called Ngā Whare o
Takiwatanaga, meaning ‘The many houses
of Autism.’
Most of the 10 featured artists worked
with Mackie during workshops with the
disability organisation Hōhepa Canterbury
last year.
Johnson-Prior, along with the other artists,
has chosen a theme for her painting
– aroha.
The young artist chose the theme after
experiencing the loss of two people close
to her last year.
The pink on the painting represents her
cousin Dell Johnson and the purple for
her dance instructor Adriaan Beedie.
The yellow represents the love between
Dell and her husband Jimmy.
The painting features a love heart in the
centre, which Johnson-Prior is going to
detail further with Māori patterns.
Johnson-Prior graduated from Rudolph
Steiner School at the end of 2023.
She has been interested in art throughout
schooling but began delving into
abstract art last year with the help of a
teacher aide.
“Mostly she uses a pallette knife instead
of a brush to get the effects she wants,”
said Johnson.
She believes her daughter’s down syndrome
helps her creatively in some ways.
“There’s not the same self-consciousness
or worry about what somebody’s going to
think. It’s just really about being present
in the moment and that flow of creativity.”
She said her daughter will sometimes
paint on multiple canvases at once for a
creativity boost.
Johnson-Prior currently works at her
family’s chocolate business, She Chocolaterie,
in the city centre.
With her family’s support, this year
she has the ambition of starting her own
workshop and teaching art there with her
older sister.
The exhibition runs from Friday to
February 6.
The themes of the other artists include
taio (the environment), kaitiakaitanga
(guardianship), rereke (point of difference)
and whakapapa (ancestry).
REMEMBERED: Rosie Johnson-Prior
and her dance instructor Adriaan
Beedie who passed away last year.
Her painting partly represents the
love she had for him.
Etching away the hours: Nautical
• By Chris Barclay
JOHN F Kennedy brought a
seafaring tradition back from
the depths of obscurity before
his assassination, and now a Mt
Pleasant artist has perfected his
own depiction of a dying art.
Scrimshaw originated off
the United States of America’s
New England coast – President
Kennedy’s home state of Massachusetts
– in the mid-1700s
by artistic whalers to break the
tedium of long voyages.
They whiled away untold
hours at sea by etching designs
– usually the vessel they crewed,
the girlfriend at home or a
mythical sea creature – on to
ivory teeth extracted from their
catch.
Scrimshanders, as they were
known, also decorated knives,
buttons and yarn winders by
using shark skin or pumice to
smooth the surface before a jack
knife or sail needle created an
outline.
Soot from the ship’s oven,
squid ink, tobacco juice or
gunpowder mixed with whale oil
then produced pigment to make
the design visible.
There is no open fire, or
pungent tobacco wafting in
Gus Milne’s workshop, yet the
72-year-old is still faithful to the
hobby he discovered by chance
four decades ago.
His creations are handmade
with a craft knife and a pin vice
before ink is applied. Sandpaper
is used to erase mistakes.
Milne, an avid model maker
since his teenage years, is also
self-taught.
There were no classes or
YouTube tutorials, and the
former workmate who turned
him to scrimshaw was solely a
collector.
“He wore an ivory pendant one
day and I thought I quite like the
idea of that,” Milne said.
He cut his teeth, so to speak,
on beef bone, which is hardly the
finished article.
“The trouble with beef bone is
you only get to ink it three times
and it bleeds into the bone. It
also has a grain and it tends to
grip the blade sometimes and
it will take you off in directions
SEAL OF APPROVAL: John F Kennedy reinvigorated
interest in scrimshaw during his presidency.
CRAFTSMAN: Gus Milne has been immersed in the nautical artform scrimshaw for more
than 40 years.
you don’t want to go.”
So Milne graduated to
scrimshaw’s base of choice,
ivory, a polarising product in
this day and age.
His website (www.
cressyscrimshaw.co.nz) details
how scrimshaw fits with The
Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species,
which New Zealand joined in
1989.
“I’m never going to do it on
elephant tusks,” he said.
Milne works with pre-ban
ivory and said although whaling
ended in New Zealand waters in
1964, there were thousands of
whale teeth in legitimate private
ownership.
To emphasise the point he
opens a case including ivory
mammoth tusks from the Arctic
Circle aged between 6000 to
‘God knows how many’ years.
Mammoth ivory is acceptable
because they are extinct rather
than an endangered species.
There are also walrus tusks
and ivory teeth from sperm
whales, last purchased through
domestic auctions and antique
stores five years ago.
Milne has whale ivory items
available but now uses it for
personal use.
Sale or commissioned items
are now assembled from the
keys of unwanted pianos, after
he noticed a bookmark of that
origin on Instagram 18 months
ago.
“This is more acceptable to my
‘This is more acceptable
to my way of thinking
because it’s old ivory piano
keys that are going to the
dump’ – Gus Milne
way of thinking because it’s old
ivory piano keys that are going to
the dump,” he explained.
His earliest piano keys were
played in London in 1876; he
recently acquired 200 from a
store clean out in Timaru.
Milne, who is unaware of any
other scrimshanders in New
Zealand, used piano ivory for
triptychs and has now branched
out to wider compositions.
He gauges the production
time in several weeks rather
than hours and estimates he
has produced 200 artworks –
including those from whale
and mammoth ivory – over his
career.
There are no plans to retire
though scrimshaw tests his
singular focus after he studies
paintings or photographs.
“You have to take breaks, you
tend not to blink so your eyes
dry out,” said Milne, who priced
his most valuable piece at
$3500.
Milne primarily illustrates
vessels of a bygone era and
panoramas of Antarctica – often
complemented by penguins and
orca whales – though he has also
reproduced the Wahine listing
on Barrett Reef in 1968.
An earlier shipwreck amid
New Zealand’s Subantarctic
Islands underlined a welcome
educational benefit to his
passion, as Milne researched the
loss of the British four-masted
steel barque Dundonald in
March, 1907.
Laden with wheat on a
journey from Sydney bound
for Cornwall in the UK, the
Dundonald slammed onto rocks
on Disappointment Island’s
west coast, 8km northwest of
Auckland Island.
KEYED IN: Precision and attention to detail is paramount
for a scrimshander.

SHIPSHAPE: The
Dundonald on
the Avon River
at Bristol taken
between 1891 and
1907, and shortly
before it was swept
onto the cliffs of
Disappointment
Island (above).
He discovered 16 of the
28-strong crew managed to scale
the rigging, clamber onto a cliff
face and climb to safety.
The castaways defied starvation
before being rescued that
November after surviving on
12,000 mollyhawk chicks, seals,
plant roots and seaweed.
“It’s a great story, the rescue
and how they came to survive,”
said Milne, who was asked to
recreate Dundonald’s imminent
demise by a Department of
Conservation employee tasked
with monitoring bird life on
Auckland Island.
Milne also delved into the
exploits of Felix Graf von
Luckner’s exploits, captain of the
German raider SMS Seeadler
during World War 1.
Known as Der Seeteufel (Sea
Devil), von Luckner oversaw
the sinking of 14 Allied ships in
the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
before he was arrested in Fiji and
sent to prisoner of war camps in
Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour
and Ripapa Island off Lyttelton.
Von Luckner prided himself
on the bloodness nature of his
operations, with only one enemy
sailor perishing during his raids.
“He was quite a gentleman,
he’d take them all off the ship
and then he’d sink it,” Milne said.
President Kennedy, a PT boat
captain in the Pacific during
HISTORIC HOBBY: Milne ponders the history of the vessels
he depicts, and what sailors endured, when he works
on scrimshaw.
World War 2, also appreciated
the historical aspect of
scrimshaw, resurrecting interest
in the art when he placed the
best of his collection on his desk
inside the Oval Office.
After Kennedy was shot dead
in 1963 his widow Jacqueline
reportedly slipped a treasured
piece into his coffin prior to
internment at Arlington National
Cemetery.
“JFK kicked off the popularity,”
said Milne, who laments
curiosity has now waned.
There are still modern-day
scrimshanders active in Lahaina,
on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
There is also a community in San
Francisco.
However, once CITES
was introduced in the USA,
scrimshaw could not be legally
transferred interstate.
“I don’t see a big future in
it,” said Milne, citing another
disadvantage.
“I don’t think it’ll carry on
in this form because when the
ivory’s gone, it’s gone.”
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
The legacy of Edward Morey, builder
of churches, schools and bridges
WHO WAS Edward Morey? He
certainly made his mark – with
most of his well designed and
built structures still standing,
despite the earthquakes – and
added to the colourful history
around Banks Peninsula.
Edward William Morey was
born in Havant, Hampshire,
England on April 8, 1822. On
September 13, 1841 he married
Charlotte King in Alverstoke,
Hampshire. On October
12, 1858, Edward, aged 35,
Charlotte, 34, and their three
daughters aged 12, eight and 18
months, boarded the ship Strathalan
bound for New Zealand.
They were assisted immigrants,
the total fare being £59, 10s
(NZ$18,500). They arrived in
Lyttelton on January 21, 1859.
Edward was a trained stonemason
and bricklayer, as was his
father Henry Morey.
Prior to their arrival in Lyttelton,
plans for a new stone Anglican
church had been drawn up
by surveyor and architect George
Mallinson, after the unfortunate
demise of the first timber Anglican
church. Built in 1852, it
soon had to be demolished after
the freshly milled native timbers
used in its construction shrank,
making it too dangerous to occupy
in the strong southerly and
nor’west winds.
Along comes Mr
Morey. Did he know
about the planned
new church
before he left
England? Was
that why
he came to
Lyttelton?
You would
think that
the news of
the fate of
the original
church would
have been
talked about by
church builders
back in England,
especially considering
that William Chaney, a well
respected English stonemason
who spent 18 years restoring
Canterbury Cathedral before
coming to New Zealand, was
involved in the first church’s
construction. There is, however,
no mention of this being a
possibility anywhere in the
Morey family history.
Morey submitted a quote to
build the new church, which the
Anglican diocese accepted. The
tender was let to him on April
11, 1859 for £3,320 (NZ$1
million). The new
church was situated
further to the east
than the former,
in order that the
whole building
rested level on
solid ground,
with the
foundation
stone being
laid on June
26, 1859. The
building was
Edward William
Morey. PHOTO:
CARL BONNIFACE
COLLECTION
constructed of red porphyry
(volcanic) stone from the
Sumner Rd quarry, with
finishing sandstone from Quail
Island and a shingled roof. The
new Church of the Most Holy
Trinity was consecrated on April
10, 1860; it had taken just 11
months to build.
Interestingly, as stated in the
Lyttelton Times article on the
consecration on 11 April 1860:
“A great portion of the interior
timber used had been taken
from the materials of the former
Church and is therefore well
seasoned.”
An excerpt from the same
article reads:
“It is due to Mr Morey to say
that he has kept more than good
faith with the parish, and has left
a record of excellent workmanship,
done in a short space in
time, in a business like way, and
with a conscientious liberality,
which should teach a practical
lesson to the whole building
trade in the province.”
Unfortunately, this beautiful
church became a victim of
the 2010/2011 Canterbury
Earthquake Sequence, but not
its historic fittings and fixtures.
STONEMASONRY: Reproduction of a sketch by
J.E. FitzGerald, of the first Church of England in
Lyttelton, December 1852. Above – Second Holy
Trinity Church, pre 1900.
Thanks to some dedicated local
people, those irreplaceable treasures
were saved and reinstated
into St Saviours at Holy Trinity,
which is another story to be told.
Although Morey built the
new Anglican church, he was
actually an active member
of the Wesleyan church in
Lyttelton, volunteering his
time to make improvements to
that denomination’s buildings
to accommodate its rapidly
increasing congregation. He
lived in Lyttelton for four years,
from 1859 to 1862. During that
time he delved into the property
market, purchasing and leasing
sections and building houses on
Jacksons, Selwyn and Hawkhurst
Rds, as well as Oxford St.
Morey also successfully
tendered for and built brick
culverts across London and
Norwich Lodge No. 4356, of the
Manchester Unity Independent
Order of Oddfellows, in St
Davids St for the bargain price
of £245 (NZ$75,000), as he
was a brother and secretary of
the order. He unsuccessfully
tendered to build the Lyttelton
Gaol (November 16, 1860) and
the beacon on Adderley Head
(May 7, 1861). He regularly ran
an advertisement in the Lyttelton
Times stating:
“EW Morey, mason, builder
and contractor – Tombs and
headstones neatly executed.”
• This week’s story from Te Ūaka
guest writer Carl Bonniface, a
descendant of Edward Morey.
Tucson ‘not just show with plenty of go’
ADDING PLUG-IN hybrid
technology means one of
Hyundai’s best-selling SUVs
the mid-sized Tucson, is just a
step removed from taking the
inevitable full electrification
plunge.
With its bold looks, digital capabilities,
and upgraded ride and
handling, Hyundai expects this
Tucson to add significantly to the
over 7 million sold globally since
the original model was launched
For our market, the Tucson
is only sold in short-wheel base
form, while its cousin the Kia
Sportage rides on a long-wheel
base. Unlike the Tucson, the
Sportage isn’t available here in
hybrid form.
The Tucson hybrid comes in
2WD and AWD forms with the
plug-in model exclusively AWD,
and road tested here in top spec
Elite guise. The AWD system is
also found in its larger sibling,
the ever-popular Santa Fe. Power
is distributed to the front and
rear wheels depending on traction
conditions, while the terrain
mode selector maximises power,
torque and braking depending on
the conditions you’re driving in.
The Tucson plug-in hybrid isn’t
cheap compared to many of its
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
rivals with the entry-level version
retailing for $83,990, with a $5k
premium on the more lavishly
attired Elite.
A high tempo 195kW plug-in
hybrid power train is strong
and feisty with acceleration that
bristles with sporty intent. It’s
not just show with plenty of go.
A rich vein of torque and the
extra kick of the fully charged
battery pack ensures punchy
take-offs from standing starts,
and purposeful pulling power for
most driving situations. These
attributes make light work of undulating
roads and long energy
draining up hill grinds.
The plug-in has an all electric-only
range of up to 65km,
similar to several rivals, including
the Mitsubishi Eclipse and
Ford Escape. Both pack a much
lighter performance punch than
the heavy hitting Tucson PHEV’s
195kW. The claimed 65km all
electric range is fairly bullish.
However, the real world every
day driving figure is the one that
really counts and hinges on a lot
of variables.
Topping the list is whether
you’re an aggressive driver,
constantly running accessories
such as the air conditioning, or
travelling on flat or hilly terrain.
Owners should be prepared for
an all-electric range of up to
15km less than the claimed 65km
figure.
In other news from the claims
department, this time fuel economy,
the test car was disappointing.
I knocked off a 500km roadie
in it with four adults on board,
on a trip covering some sections
of hilly driving, and averaged
7.3L/100km. That number is well
north of the claimed 1.5L/100km.
This might doable in low speed
town driving when the car can
spend extended periods in EV
mode, but well out of reach on
open road romps.
one of the more potent non-full
EVs on Hyundai New Zealand’s
books is a smart rework of the
company’s proven 7-speed automatic.
The test vehicle turned in
an almost flawless gear-changing
exhibition. One of the highlights
was the transmission’s happy
knack of knowing what gear it
needed, showcasing the undoubted
talents of this excellent power
train.
For a compact SUV front and
rear legroom is adequate rather
than generously provisioned. I
found the rear door openings too
narrow to easily navigate bulker
items through like a child car
seat. The rear cargo hatch does
the job, but isn’t helped by the
batteries being stored under the
floor, raising its elevation and
restricting load height.
SUV buyers demand top rate
connectivity in their vehicles
these days and the Tucson has
that well covered with some of
the best in class digital tech.
Hyundai’s digital key is a great
‘for instance’ turning your
smartphone, into a smart key. It’s
not a one trick pony either, allowing
you to lock and unlock the
vehicle, activate the panic alert
and start the motor from over
25m away. (Not sure why you
would want to do the latter, other
than showing off to mates in the
golf club car park.)
A full-touch display houses the
navigation system, air conditioning
and infotainment controls.
This offers split-screen functionality
that enables multi-tasking.
It was easy to master the basics
without turning you into an
instant expert.
The Tucson hybrid range is
fitted with a comprehensive suite
of safety features. On boarded are
most of the safety essentials such
as lane keeping assist, forward
collision avoidance, blind-spot
collision avoidance, and smart
cruise control.
A potential life safer when
the vehicle is stationary is safe
exit assist. It reduces the risk of
people getting out of the vehicle
and stepping into the path of an
approaching vehicle they couldn’t
see. It does this by sounding an
alarm warning you of the impending
danger.
The suspension is sportier than
many hybrids with its nimble and
playful character, and composed
in managing sudden deviations
in the road surface.
No complaints about passenger
comfort that’s largely free of the
choppy listless ride traits of some
short wheelbase SUVs.
Little in the way of suspension
noise penetrates the passenger
compartment, even under severe
provocation from sub-standard
roads. Well weighted, communicative
steering responds quickly
to the driver inputs and allows
you to accurately and effortlessly
place the vehicle where you want
it on the road. This vehicle puts
fun with a capital ‘F’ into the sub
$90k plug-in hybrid class.
