Swaffham & District Lions Club
The New Year has started fairly quietly
after all the activities of the festive period.
We collected a total of £1300 with our Santa
charity collections at Waitrose and Tesco in the run
up to Christmas, and we thank everyone who very
kindly supported us, a great result.
Lions Club President
Nicola Claxton had
the pleasure of
presenting a cheque
for £250 to Sadie
Grist and all the
young stars of the
production “Grimm’s
Tales” at Westacre
Theatre. The money will be used to help support the
work the theatre does
for children and young
people in the local area.
Our next event will
be the Pancake Race
which will be held on
Shrove Tuesday, the
13th February on the
Campingland.
Borough Council of Lynn & W.Norfolk
People start 2024 with a sociable Hunstanton walk
78 people started the New Year with a 3 mile walk in
Hunstanton on Monday 1 January 2024, organised
by the borough council and West Norfolk Walking
for Health.
Cllr Simon Ring, Cabinet member for Tourism, Events
and Marketing, said: “It’s good to see that 78 people,
and a few dogs, joined in the gentle 3 mile walk that
started at St Edmund’s Chapel Ruins, near the Old
Lighthouse. The weather was good and the sociable
walk took in many beautiful parts of the town. This
was a wonderful way to see in the new year and is
the first of many events planned for Hunstanton in
2024."
Swaffham History Group
The Swaffham History Group, normally
meets on the second Monday of the month
at 2pm in the Swaffham Town Council chamber,
accessible via the Museum (there is a lift to the
Council chamber). Anyone can join and there is no
subscription except an annual registration fee of £1
(this so that our Group Secretary, Gerry, can keep the
register of members up-to-date).
We did not meet in January, as the museum is
normally closed then. Our next meeting will be on
12th February, when Dr Sue Gattuso will be speaking
about an old Swaffham family, the Spelmans, and the
library they bequethed to the parish. We will also
be considering visits to places of historical interest,
including other museums in our region.
You can find out more about us online in the Swaffham
Heritage website at https://www.swaffhammuseum.
co.uk/history/swaffham-history-group or just drop in
at our next meeting.
Alternatively, please email theswaffhamhistorygroup@
gmail.com for further information. New members
are always welcome; you are not required to do any
research or have any qualifications just, obviously, an
interest in our local history.
"We have new events planned this year including
walking football, group tai chi, beat the tide, flower
arranging and a classic car event. Also we have
returning favourites like the Battle of the Bands
and Soap Box Derby back in its rightful place in
September to wrap up the summer events season
for west Norfolk.”
