WORK TO upgrade a short 

section of the Northern Line 

cycleway that connects to 

Papanui High School is finally 

almost finished. 

The section between Sawyers 

Arms and Langdons Rds next 

to the railway corridor is currently 

closed while the existing 

footpath is widened and resurfaced. 

The work, which was 

meant to take place in October 

but was postponed, is set be 

completed by next week. 

Until the section is reopened 

students biking south towards 

Sawyers Arms Rd can access 

the school via the Papanui 

Domain footbridge that leads to 

the school field. 

A Papanui High School 

spokesperson warned students 

returning to school this week 

to take care until the work is 

completed. 

“Please be mindful of 

pedestrians on footpaths, 

vehicles on driveways and 

walk your bike when on the 

concreted areas of the school 

grounds.”

being the youngest on the 

water. 

Sam has been sailing since 

he was 6-years-old and is 

now competing against opponents 

up to eight years his 

senior. 

He said he enjoys the competition. 

“It’s fun, but I just don’t 

want to get on the wrong side 

of them,” he said.

Foster was the one who 

first took him out sailing, 

and is probably his biggest 

supporter. 

Foster hailed the work his 

son was doing in holding 

his own against more 

experienced yachties. 

“It’s phenomenal what Sam 

is achieving,” he said.

while being the youngest there 

by almost two years, and will be 

in the nationals at Lyttelton this 

weekend. 

Foster thinks Sam’s got a shot 

of doing well. 

“At the South Island and 

Canterbury competitions he got 

fifth, and he was the youngest 

competitor there. 

“If he keeps it up, he’ll do 

well.” 

Foster said good coaching 

helped. 

“It’s really important as well to 

have people around you. We’re 

with the Waimakariri club and 

Jeff O’Leary, who’s the coach out 

there, has lifted his game quite 

a bit.” 

Sam attends Hillmorton 

Intermediate and lives in 

Halswell. 

He has already met sailing 

royalty as well. 

“He was at the P-Class 

nationals a few weeks ago, and 

met Peter Burling, and got a 

selfie with him,” said Foster. 

He says Sam has put the 

hard yards into everything, 

sailing-wise.

boat, a big portion went into it 

from him with making money 

by feeding cats and dogs and 

things like that.

pretty handy guy, he can just

Sam says he’s constantly 

working on improving. 

“If I’m not on the water, I’m on 

land doing theory stuff.

through a plan in my head of 

how I’m gonna sail that race, 

and fitness, and I’m on the water 

every day I can.”

Sports association focuses on family 

ŌTAUTAHI Sports Association 

is synonymous with Māori sport 

in Christchurch. It has also seen 

a big growth in membership in 

recent years. So how did it all 

come about? 

The association is more than 

just a traditional sports club. 

Based in the central city, the 

organisation is strengthening 

its ties to the community and 

supporting generations of 

whānau to participate in sport 

and cultural activities. 

The club offers rugby, netball, 

softball, touch, and tag teams to 

its registration base, which has 

grown to almost 700 members. 

It also delivers cultural activities 

such as a whānau hauora 

programme, including mahi toi, 

waiata practice, te reo Māori 

initiatives, and Matariki 

events. 

Many of the organisation’s 

early members participated 

in the Māori Trade Training 

Scheme, bonding through their 

inaugural rugby team and 

helping to grow the kaupapa 

to what it is today, a whānaufocused 

hub of sports, recreation, 

and culture. 

“We have a long, rich history 

with Rehua Marae, and that is 

through the whakapapa of the 

Māori Trade Training kaupapa 

because a lot of our members 

originated from that marae,” 

said co-chair of Ōtautahi Sports 

IN ACTION: Rugby, being played here by the Taniwha U11 team at Lancaster Park, is one of the many sports offered by 

Ōtautahi Sports Association.

numbers have also increased, 

which Merito attributes to 

their focus on whanaungatanga 

(family connections) and 

manaakitanga (generosity). 

“Our kaupapa is heavily 

fostered on whanaungatanga 

and manaakitanga and what that 

means for our whānau who have 

come from the North Island,” 

Merito said. 

“It’s that sense of belonging; 

You’re away from your iwi, 

you’re away from your hapū, and 

you’re away from your whānau. 

So they’re looking for that 

connection to home, and that’s 

what our rugby club started 

from.” 

Division two rugby coach 

Corey Te Rupe says he grew up 

around Ōtautahi Sports, as his 

father was an early member of 

the club. 

“I love the camaraderie,” he 

said. 

“I’ve made lifelong friends who 

I consider whānau through the 

club.” 

With its focus on whānau and 

community, Ōtautahi Sports 

is proud to be home to four 

generations of whānau. During 

the 2022/23 softball season, 

the Merito and Hepi whānau 

celebrated their great-mokopuna 

taking the field as fourthgeneration 

members.

Freemasonry 

THE CANTERBURY Masonic 

Charitable Trust will be hosting 

an information desk at the 

Freemasons Open Day, at 

Ferrymead Heritage Park on 

Sunday (10am–4pm). 

Local groups, charities and 

community organisations are 

encouraged to attend to discuss 

how to apply for funding. 

In celebration of its 60th year, 

the trust committed $60,000 

to the Air Rescue Trust to 

support annual training costs 

for helicopter rescue pilots on 

Instrument Flight Rules. 

IFR allows pilots to fly in 

low visibility, such as in fog 

or low light. The ability to 

perform in challenging terrain 

and conditions is central to 

the crew’s effectiveness in 

responding to emergency 

situations. All rescue pilots 

must undergo annual training 

and checks, and the signififcant 

donation helps to support this 

service. 

Over the past nine years, the 

trust has funded the Freemasons 

Christchurch nursing 

scholarship, for applicants 

undertaking the Bachelor of 

Nursing at Ara Te Pūkenga. 

Other recent recipients of 

charitable grants from CMCT 

include NZ Spinal Trust, 

Gilberthorpe School, Seabrook 

MacKenzie, Christchurch Land 

Search and Rescue, and Graeme 

Dingle Foundation. 

By raising funds from car 

parking near the Hagley 

Netball Courts during winter, 

plus a donation from the trust 

that was matched by a national 

charity, CMCT raised enough 

to purchase all the netball 

goal posts for the new indoor 

Canterbury Netball Centre at 

Ngā Puna Wai.

years of association with 

Ōtautahi Sports, having been 

founding members of the rugby 

club in 1969, while the Hepi 

whānau joined in the 1970s and 

have since had their tamariki and 

mokopuna participate in every 

sport available. 

As well as nurturing existing 

relationships, Ōtautahi Sports 

has formed new relationships 

as it has grown, collaborating 

with He Waka Tapu and Te 

Rūnanga o Ngā Maata Waka 

at Ngā Hau e Whā. The club’s 

focus on community enables it to 

forge new relationships through 

member connections and word of 

mouth. 

Ōtautahi Sports recognises 

cost is the most signififcant 

barrier to people wanting to 

engage in sports 

and cultural 

activities. Merito 

notes the current 

fifnancial climate 

as a pressure 

point for many

help remove cost barriers to 

participation through events such 

as hāngi, quiz nights, kai raffles, 

and venue hire. 

Rātā Foundation chief 

executive Leighton Evans says 

the club’s impact will be felt for

active recreation, and cultural 

activities has many benefifts for 

communities, but we know some 

people face barriers that make 

participation more challenging,” 

he said. 

“Ōtautahi Sports is working 

to actively remove barriers, 

ensuring more people have access 

to sport and opportunities for 

cultural connection. The mahi 

they are doing today will have a 


lasting impact on the future of 

Christchurch communities.” 

While Ōtautahi Sports is 

fortunate to have been gited a 

Māori name by Ngāi Tahu as 

mana whenua, Merito says it is 

not a sports club exclusively for 

Māori and Pasififka whānau and 

their doors are open to anyone 

who wishes to join. 

Merito says, “We’re here for 

everybody. We welcome anybody 

and everybody, but we are 

kaitiaki of the name Ōtautahi 

Sports, affectionately known as 

OT for short.”

THE ID.4 is a milestone on 

the road to full electrification 

for German automotive giant 

Volkswagen, clocking in as the 

company’s first vehicle built on a 

dedicated EV platform. 

There’s plenty going for the 

ID.4 in terms of space, technology, 

performance, and versatility. 

For our market, it’s a two model 

show comprising the generously 

appointed PRO $74,990 

that is under scrutiny in this 

road test, or the more lavishly 

appointed $79,990 PRO+. Both 

go the EV distance better than 

most, with real world electric 

ranges of 519km. The ID.4 has 

the standard SUV body shape 

with its sibling, the ID.5, opting 

for a more sophisticated coupelike 

appearance. I preferred the 

clean-cut and less intricate styling 

of the ID.4. 

The honeymoon is over for
