Sam’s holding his own
• By Sam Coughlan
YOUNG SAILOR Sam
Foster, 11, is holding his
own against much older
opponents despite regularly
being the youngest on the
water.
The Hillmorton Intermediate
pupil and Halswell resident
has been sailing since he
was 6-years-old and is now
competing against opponents
up to eight years his senior.
Sam said he enjoys the
competition.
“It’s fun, but I just don’t
want to get on the wrong side
of them,” he said.
Foster hailed the work his
son was doing in holding his
“It’s phenomenal what Sam
is achieving,” he said.
Speed
limit drop
starts in
Sydenham
• By Sasha Watson
TO MAKE the roads safer around
schools in Sydenham, the city
council has started reducing
speeds from 50km/h to 30km/h.
Reduced speed signs will be
installed in Opawa, Spreydon,
Somerfield, Sydenham and
Waltham.
City council
transport operations
manager
Stephen Wright
said the first signs
were installed on
January 19, following
the installation
of 30km/h signs
in Beckenham just
before Christmas.
Stephen
Wright
“All signs in the Sydenham area
east of Colombo St and south of
Brougham St have been installed.
Work is under way to install the
signs to the west of Colombo St in
Sydenham, Spreydon and Somerfield
in the next couple of weeks.”
The works are being funded
through the $40 million Christchurch
Regeneration Acceleration
Facility fund, which goes towards
the city’s transport and roading
improvements, including projects
that increase safety and the
number of people using public
transport.
“Speed signs in Sydenham
neighbourhoods, south of
Brougham St, will also be
changing from 50km/h to
40km/h in the next couple of
weeks,” Wright said.
Getting
to school
safely a
priority
• From page 1
These changes have been
prioritised to make it safer for
children to get to and from
school, following the city council’s
approval of a revised version of
the safe speed neighbourhood
proposal in July last year.
The city council started to
change speeds and signage
around schools in Christchurch in
mid-September, and over the next
two years will be lowering speeds
around every school.
Other areas across the city will
have lower speeds implemented
over the next 10 years as funding
becomes available through the
speed management plan.
Stormwater work under way
REPAIR WORK on stormwater
mains beneath Ferry Rd has led
to temporary changes to traffic
movement and parking in the
area.
The city council’s stormwater
work is under way and is
expected to be completed
by the end of February, with
underground relining work
further along Ferry Rd to follow.
Works include enlarging
manholes on Ferry Rd, which
requires the excavation of
Ferry Rd near the intersection
of Ensors Rd and Aldwins Rd,
to provide better access to the
stormwater mains.
The access is needed for the
next phase of the project, which
involves relining the existing
pipe. Workers will return to
the intersection in March to
complete the underground
stormwater repairs.
City council head of three
waters Brent Smith said the
council appreciates the patience
and understanding of motorists
and business owners in the
area.
“The stormwater mains
work is critical and needs to be
done over the summer while
water flows are at their lowest.
Unfortunately, the disruption
to businesses and motorists
cannot be avoided as this work is
essential. We’re doing our best to
make the disruption as minimal
as possible.”
All traffic lanes on Ferry Rd,
Ensors Rd and Aldwins Rd
will have speed restrictions of
30km/h near the construction
sites, while work is under way.
There are right-turning
restrictions at the intersection
and side roads; there are no
right turns from Ferry Rd into
Aldwins Rd (coming from
the east) and into Ensors Rd
(coming from the west).
Businesses in the area remain
open, and customers can
access businesses via Ferry Rd.
Customers can also park on
Frederick St.
Traffic signals and cables are
also being replaced at the Ferry
Rd, Ensors Rd and Aldwins Rd
intersection.
Safe speed platforms will be
installed at the intersection and
the additional transport work
is expected to begin at the end
of February and take about five
weeks.
Growing sports association fosters
ŌTAUTAHI Sports Association
is synonymous with Māori sport
in Christchurch. It has also seen
a big growth in membership in
recent years. So how did it all
come about?
The association is more than
just a traditional sports club.
Based in the central city, the
organisation is strengthening its
ties to the community and supporting
generations of whānau to
participate in sport and cultural
activities.
The club offers rugby, netball,
softball, touch, and tag teams to
its registration base, which has
grown to almost 700 members.
It also delivers cultural activities
such as a whānau hauora programme,
including mahi toi,
waiata practice, te reo Māori
initiatives, and Matariki events.
Many of the organisation’s early
members participated in the
Māori Trade Training Scheme,
bonding through their inaugural
rugby team and helping to grow
the kaupapa to what it is today,
a whānau-focused hub of sports,
recreation, and culture.
“We have a long, rich history
with Rehua Marae, and that is
through the whakapapa of the
Māori Trade Training kaupapa
because a lot of our members
originated from that marae,” said
co-chair of Ōtautahi Sports Association
Aromia Merito.
IN ACTION: Rugby, being played here by the Taniwha U11 team at Lancaster Park, is one of the many sports offered by
Ōtautahi Sports Association.
The club’s popularity can be
seen in the 48
per cent increase
in its membership
numbers
since 2020. With
their registered
members, 130
Aromia
volunteers, and
whānau involvement,
the wider
Merito
community associated with the
club is now in the thousands.
Māori and Pasifika numbers
have also increased, which
Merito attributes to their focus
on whanaungatanga (family
connections) and manaakitanga
(generosity).
“Our kaupapa is heavily fostered
on whanaungatanga and
manaakitanga and what that
means for our whānau who have
come from the North Island,”
Merito said.
“It’s that sense of belonging;
You’re away from your iwi, you’re
away from your hapū, and you’re
away from your whānau. So
they’re looking for that connection
to home, and that’s what our
rugby club started from.”
Division two rugby coach
Corey Te Rupe says he grew up
around Ōtautahi Sports, as his
father was an early member of
the club.
“I love the camaraderie,” he
said.
“I’ve made lifelong friends who
I consider whānau through the
club.”
With its focus on whānau and
community, Ōtautahi Sports is
proud to be home to four generations
of whānau. During the
2022/23 softball season, the Merito
and Hepi whānau celebrated
their great-mokopuna taking
the field as fourth-generation
members.
sense of belonging
fifty-four years of association
with Ōtautahi Sports, having
been founding members of the
rugby club in 1969, while the
Hepi whānau joined in the 1970s
and have since had their tamariki
and mokopuna participate in
every sport available.
As well as nurturing existing
relationships, Ōtautahi Sports
has formed new relationships as
it has grown, collaborating with
He Waka Tapu and Te Rūnanga
o Ngā Maata Waka at Ngā Hau
e Whā. The club’s focus on community
enables it to forge new
relationships through member
connections and word of mouth.
Ōtautahi Sports recognises cost
is the most significant barrier
to people wanting to engage in
sports and cultural activities.
Merito notes the current financial
climate as a pressure
point for
many whānau.
She says the
club fundraises
to help remove
cost barriers to
Leighton
Evans
participation
through events
such as hāngi,
quiz nights, kai
raffles, and venue hire.
Rātā Foundation chief executive
Leighton Evans says
the club’s impact will be felt for
generations to come.
“Involvement in sport, active
recreation, and cultural activities
has many benefits for communities,
but we know some people
face barriers that make participation
more challenging,” he said.
“Ōtautahi Sports is working to
actively remove barriers, ensuring
more people have access to sport
and opportunities for cultural
connection. The mahi they are
doing today will have a lasting
impact on the future of Christchurch
communities.”
While Ōtautahi Sports is fortunate
to have been gifted a Māori
name by Ngāi Tahu as mana
whenua, Merito says it is not a
sports club exclusively for Māori
and Pasifika whānau and their
doors are open to anyone who
wishes to join.
Merito says, “We’re here for
everybody. We welcome anybody
and everybody, but we are
kaitiaki of the name Ōtautahi
Sports, affectionately known as
OT for short.”
Foster thinks Sam’s got a shot
“At the South Island and
“If he keeps it up, he’ll do
“He’s had to work hard for his
No-mow initiative unites rangers and residents
WILDFLOWERS, fruit trees and
hand-painted signs are helping
to brighten up Addington’s
Simeon Park in a bid to create
a more welcoming and diverse
space, as well as helping reduce
environmental impact.
A collaboration between the
city council parks and a local
volunteer group has seen nomow
and low-mow areas and a
small orchard established within
the park with the aim of growing
a ‘food forest’ over time.
It’s the brainchild of the Simeon
Park Community Group,
which began with a presentation
to their local community board.
“Through that process we
met with our local community
partnership rangers, Holly
Whitaker and Annaliese
Caukwell-Mills,” said group
spokesperson Rebecca.
“Our group was especially
keen on reducing the large
amount of mowing done at the
park, which was such a waste of
energy. We had on site meetings
THE CANTERBURY Masonic
Charitable Trust will be hosting
an information desk at the
Freemasons Open Day, at
Ferrymead Heritage Park on
Sunday (10am–4pm).
Local groups, charities and
community organisations are
encouraged to attend to discuss
how to apply for funding.
to discuss this project and agreed
(on) how to make it happen.
It’s taken flexible thinking and
kōrero from both sides. The
council understood how important
it was for our community
group to be reducing emissions.”
Together, they worked on developing
no-mow and low-mow
areas within the park, planting
daffodils, natives, and some
fruiting trees, and putting up signage
to help people understand it
was a community project.
The no-mow and low-mow
zones provide “heaps” of benefits.
“The longer the stalks, the
more carbon is drawn down;
less mowing means less energy
wasted. I’ve also been told that
dogs love running through the
long grass,” Rebecca said.
“The climate is changing
rapidly, so we’ll need to make
rapid changes too. Enhancing
the biodiversity and increasing
the shade of a local park is one
of many ways we can influence
our local community and create
resilience.
“As the climate worsens, we
expect to see more local developments
like this and it’d be good if
this happened sooner rather than
later, so we are super encouraging
of other parks developing in
this way,” she said.
She says seed heads provide
food for birds and homes for
insects, while bees love the dandelions
and clover flowers.
“Who knows, maybe some
skinks will return to the park.
That would be awesome!
“Having beautiful local spaces
which provide shade, kai and
sanctuaries for people and nature
will help us all find deeper
relationships with each other and
the whenua.
“Community groups are good
ways to make friends and do
your bit for the climate too. I’d
encourage everyone to do their
bit, to reduce emissions and to
help our environment, whatever
inspires them.”
Meanwhile the group hopes the
orchard will transition to a food
forest, over time. It has installed
a nature play log and has been
involved in the city council’s wildflower
programme which has had
overwhelmingly positive feedback
from the community.
“There is so much we can do,
with the council’s help, a small
amount of capital investment
and the mahi of volunteers. Anyone
can do the same thing – we
are just ordinary people getting
together to care for nature/
Papatūānuku, so she can care for
us,” Rebecca said.
“Kaitiaki of local parks can
make a big difference and community
groups can develop them
to suit their unique area, if they
work with council staff and develop
a trusting relationship. The
park rangers have been key to
that, and really get what we are
trying to achieve.”
Community parks manager Al
Hardy said they welcome local
initiatives like this.
“Working with local groups
to share knowledge, advice and
resources brings real benefits.
The community gets to have
input into their local park and
that involvement means the
space is better utilised and more
vibrant.”
Futuristic VW ID.4 goes the extra mile
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
THE ID.4 is a milestone on
the road to full electrification
for German automotive giant
Volkswagen, clocking in as the
company’s first vehicle built on a
dedicated EV platform.
There’s plenty going for the
ID.4 in terms of space, technology,
performance, and versatility.
For our market, it’s a two model
show comprising the generously
appointed PRO $74,990
that is under scrutiny in this
road test, or the more lavishly
appointed $79,990 PRO+. Both
go the EV distance better than
most, with real world electric
ranges of 519km. The ID.4 has
the standard SUV body shape
with its sibling, the ID.5, opting
for a more sophisticated coupelike
appearance. I preferred the
clean-cut and less intricate styling
of the ID.4.
The honeymoon is over for
EVs. In a double whammy
they lost the generous clean car
rebates on January 1, and from
April 1 they must pay Road
User Charges. This is the date
the RUC exemption EV owners
enjoyed for over five years comes
to an abrupt end. From that date
owners will be charged $76 for
every 1000km they travel in their
EV – the same amount light diesel
vehicles such as Utes pay.
Getting behind the wheel of
the ID.4 is a tad surreal with
the vehicle sensing your presence
and automatically starts
when you sit in the driver’s seat
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 8; Build
Quality 8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value
for money 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
using the smart key. The test car
had heaps of heft from a beefy
77kWh battery and an electric
motor producing 150kW of
power and 310Nm of torque.
This is more than enough and
with some to spare, to shift this
decent-sized SUV with genuine
zip. It cocoons you in silence,
whether it’s a laid back aroundtown
excursion, or a lively open
road dash.
Throttle response is exhilarating
and addictive. Standing
start acceleration provided by
the electrified system makes
most conventional engines look
slouches.
A roomy and welcoming cabin
has an abundance of usable passenger
and cargo space. Instruments
and controls are designed
with meticulous Germanic
attention to detail, and are easy
to read and use. There’s a 12-inch
central touch display, multifunction
steering wheel, push button
start, heated front seats and
steering wheel, with the latter
adjustable for height and reach.
A 30-colour ambient light palette
lets you have a lot of fun around
choosing the mood of the cabin,
from bright and bouncy
to laid back and chilled.
Safety is paramount,
and the ID.4 delivers in
emphatic fashion with a
coveted 5-Star ANCAP
safety rating. This was
earned through leading
edge safety tech such as
Front Assist with Predictive
Pedestrian and
Cyclist Protection. Side
Assist with Rear Traffic
Alert warns the driver of
collisions with other vehicles,
cyclists, pedestrians and static
obstacles.
All the excellent ride and road
holding traits associated with
Volkswagen are embodied in
the ID.4. The suspension sees
Macpherson struts fitted at the
front and a multi link set-up at
the rear. Both work their magic
to deliver an immensely satisfying
drive, right out of the top
draw. Rear-wheel drive offers
effective traction over most road
surfaces from the good, the bad,
and the down right hideous.
The high-voltage battery fits
snugly into the floor of the ID.4
between the axles, with its low
centre of gravity giving the
vehicle exceptional agility and
balance during brisk cornering.
With its solid and compact European
feel the test vehicle had
a genuine and desirable point of
difference over many of its peers.
This is decidedly advantageous
in one of the fastest growing and
most competitive segments of
our new car market.
The test vehicle was subjected
to an unrelenting assortment of
bruising bumps and potholes,
on a couple of lengthy drives
on rural roads that didn’t show
a shred of country hospitality. I
emerged from this experience
with a deeper respect of the ride
comfort and handling talents of
this outstanding EV.
Changes to our
kerbside collection
There are only a few changes to recycling, organics and rubbish for people in
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, to comply with the new national standards
coming into effect on 1 February 2024.
These items now go in
the yellow bin
NEW
Empty pizza boxes
(with all food scraps
removed)
Clean plastic bottles and
containers up to 4 litres
(numbered 1, 2 and 5,
with lids in the red bin)
NEW
Aerosol cans
Shredded paper, paper
towels and food soiled
paper and cardboard
Tea bags
These changes are in place to make it simple for most New Zealanders to sort their recycling,
organics and rubbish in the same way. As a nation, this helps to reduce waste and create a
better recycling product that can be on-sold to markets.
put your item in?
