East Midlands Railway (EMR)
staff at Sheffield Railway
Station have joined forces
with Yorkshire Ambulance
Service NHS Trust to train
colleagues as Community
First Responders (CFRs). They
are now equipped with skills
to provide vital care, comfort
and reassurance to anyone
suffering a medical emergency
before an ambulance arrives
on scene.
Colleagues from the supervisor,
platform services and customer
information teams have
participated in the three-day CFR
course which includes training
on cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR), operating a defibrillator
and administering oxygen.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service
has provided the EMR team with
a CFR kit bag which includes an
automated external defibrillator
(AED); this is an additional
resource to the four AEDs already
available on platforms.
“We’re looking forward to rolling
the CFR course out to more
station staff, so that when
someone falls ill or becomes
injured, we’ll be on hand to
provide the best possible firstresponse
care.”

partnering with EMR to deliver
our training to their colleagues in
Sheffield, and particularly in such
a busy station setting.
“CFRs make an extremely valuable
contribution to their communities,
and anyone using Sheffield
Railway Station has the added
benefit of CFRs working on site.
We know that in many medical
emergencies, such as a heart
attack, breathing difficulties or a
collapse, the first few minutes are
critical. If effective treatment can
be given within those first minutes,
lives can be saved.”

new Research
Institute
A new Research Institute

the new leadership posts and
partnerships, the Institute is
moving forward with designing
and developing new research
projects that will have a real-world
impact on patients.
The Institute will focus on
growing its research portfolio to
address the needs of ambulance
service patients, working across
boundaries to ensure that patients
are offered the best, evidenceinformed
care and benefit the
communities that it serves.

Paramedics and
hospice join forces
to support end-of-life
patients at home
A WORLD OF COMFORT

service and St Helena Hospice’s
SinglePoint – a 24/7 helpline and

receiving end-of-life care and
support at home across northeast

The split role offers a unique

and knowledge between the
organisations, and focuses
on helping end-of-life patients
get the help they need, while

“For our patients, it’s about
keeping them in the place where
they want to be cared for and
giving them support so they can
remain at home and are less likely
to be conveyed to hospital.”

team has added value to our

“Their skill sets are different so
they can go out and do their
assessment and diagnostics,
and if a patient has fallen, they
can often do wound care there
and then.
“We’re now getting more calls
from paramedics out on the

comfortable having conversations

recognising what’s needed for

system means the nursing team
can benefit from our staff’s training
in making swift assessment. This
allows them to assess and deal
with many patient’s non-urgent
issues – often without the need
to call an ambulance or transport
them to hospital.
“This will strengthen our existing
relationship with WAST and build
future collaborations to ensure
