Family rush to raise funds for
Oscar’s life-changing surgery

THE FAMILY of a young
man with a debilitating,
rare abdominal syndrome
is desperately fundraising
for a life-saving operation in
Germany.
Oscar Parker, once a thriving
musician, singer, and rep
hockey player at St Bede’s College
now faces a life-threatening
challenge.
Four years ago, his health
took a downturn, leaving him
with debilitating symptoms and
a mystery illness.

2024, 21-year-old Oscar finally
has answers – a confirmed diagnosis
of abdominal vascular
compression syndrome (AVCS),
an exceedingly rare disease,
especially in males.

vascular surgeon
Wilhelm Sandmann after his
family found a Facebook group
and connected with other
families going through similar
situations.

Heathcote Community Board
to advocate for a full-time
community police officer in
Addington.
The Addington Neighbourhood
Association will send a letter
to the board before the end of
the month, asking it to request
police fund the officer. The move
stemmed from a community
meeting where concerned residents
were invited to talk about
the issues they face with crime,
rough sleepers and beggars.

an individual goods “to get rid of
him” after being hassled.

problems as much as possible or

“Some beggars are not
homeless and businesses need
to eliminate begging as soon as
possible.”
Gardiner said he can be

problems should the community
need it.
“The problem exists in all
of Christchurch. A physical
address is no longer needed to be
able to receive the benefit. Some
churches and agencies act on

often have no bank account and
frequently live in cars as they
cannot rent a property.
“Short-term homeless are less
of a problem than long-term
homeless. Police need to push
them more towards social
services. One suggestion could
be to offer to call the Ministry
of Social Development on behalf
of the beggars, to get them some
more help – they are likely to
leave.
“Do not give them (beggars/
homeless) money or food as this
rewards their behaviour, causing
the individuals to repeat it.
“Please look after other people
in the community too, children
and immigrant women are
especially vulnerable. Positive
communities work together
better than negative ones.”
Geese
targeted
at lake

A MAN has been seen using a
slingshot to shoot large stones
towards a flock of canada geese
in the smaller lake at Westlake
Reserve.
Nic was a witness to the action,
which happened in Hei
Hei about 10am on Tuesday last
week. She posted her concerns
on Facebook.
“I noticed a man standing
close to the water near the rocks.
“The man, who looked to be in
his late 60s, seemed to wait until
none of the 20 families were
walking past before shooting his
slingshot. He advised me, when
asked, that he was “keeping the
dirty f**kers away”.
The post created “quite a
heated debate”, Nic said. It has
since been taken down as the
man was “identified and later
threatened” by a member of the
public. The large light-brown
geese with a white chinstrap are
afforded some protections under
the Animal Welfare Act 1999.
Nic sent the SPCA a letter
of concern and on Friday a
spokesperson responded, saying
the information provided was
not sufficient to progress an
investigation.

Maryland in the United States,
AVCS occurs when a person’s
blood vessels are under abnormal
pressure, limiting the size of the
blood vessel and the amount of
blood flowing through it.
The lack of blood flow can
make a person feel weak and
cause extreme pain.
New Zealand lacks treatment
options for AVCS, so the Parker
family aims to raise $120,000
for Oscar to have surgery in
Germany.
Oscar’s oldest sister Cushla
Parker said he grapples with
excruciating abdominal pain,
relentless fatigue, disrupted sleep,
nausea, malnourishment, and a
restricted diet, limiting him to
just four foods and water every
day.
“He’s been described as being a
great listener, always wanting to
help but ever since he’s had this
illness, he’s been unable to do the
things that he loves and enjoys
essentially because his symptoms
prevent him from doing that,”
she said.
Oscar’s health struggles have
taken a toll on his education
and career, preventing him from
finishing high school, pursuing
further studies, or maintaining
employment.

“His symptoms prevent him
from being a typical 21-year-old,
essentially, he’s just pretty much
at home all the time,” Cushla
said.
Despite his battles, Oscar aspires
to contribute to healthcare
and help others facing similar
challenges.
Cushla said surgery alone is
expected to cost around $95,000,
with additional costs on top of
that.
“The reason why the price
fluctuates is the average stay in
the German hospital post-surgery
is about two weeks, but some
people end up staying for three,”
she said.
“You need to be in the car
anywhere from four to six weeks
in Germany for post-op appointments,
additional imaging and
things like that.
“There’s the accommodation,
the travel but also a support person
going with Oscar, that also
means they’re not working for
that period as well so there’s that
loss of income.”
Expensive medical bills are
common for the Parker family as
Oscar was also diagnosed with
Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 13
months.
Oscar’s father also has Type 1
diabetes, as does his other brother,
who also lives with Down
Syndrome.
“We have a lot of medical
consumables that already aren’t
funded on top of his surgery,
which is quite a lot,” Cushla said.
The Givealittle page set up
by Cushla on December 14 has
reached $38,140 so far, with 403
donors contributing.

It’s the Year of the Dragon and
I’m told by Chinese friends
that this means an extremely
auspicious year, likely to bring
good fortune – so I’m hoping
you enjoy any opportunities that
come your way.
I love the entry into a new year. There’s
the excitement of what’s ahead, either
real or imagined, forgiveness for
everything that didn’t go well and there
are also the beautiful learnings that
emanated from the year that’s been.
I’m always curious about what lies
ahead and having a plan is one of the
secrets that allows me to embrace that
future.
I’m not alone in planning, nor are my
methods unique, but with a large dose
of personal accountability and a great
work ethic it’s highly likely that any
goals or resolutions that are set do end
up being achieved, if not surpassed.
Whenever you speak to people, they
will give you one of two responses to
the prospect of New Year’s goals or
resolutions.
The first response is often ‘they simply
don’t work’ and for some – and
we’ll delve into the actual statistics
supporting this soon – that’s the truth.
American studies (sorry, I couldn’t find
any relating to New Zealand) provide
the following:
38% of people have said that they
were going to commit to New Year’s
resolutions but of those a massive 92%
didn’t follow through or faltered very
early.
That makes the percentage of those
who actually set goals this way, and at
this time, tiny.
Here then is the second group of
people who at this time on the calendar
are knee-deep planning, writing,
envisaging and committing to the year
that they want to see for themselves.
This can include goals around position
or job progress, financial wellbeing
and debt reduction, family and friend
relationships, and connection, health
and numerous other personal matters.
It can be as lofty as some incredible
endurance or sporting feat, or as simple
as writing down what you’re grateful
for and hoping for more life benefits
because of this.
I’m in the second group, having always
committed to writing my hopes for the
year ahead whilst considering personal,
professional and family goals.
I’ve done this for at least 25 years and
I find the New Year is a perfect time to
undertake such a plan. In fact what was
once a pretty basic couple of sentences
is now a beautifully written journal
looking at all aspects of health, what
I expect to do for myself, the business
and the community, plus much much,
more. I then read this daily, review it at
least quarterly and celebrate the results
annually.
It’s been an incredible journey. It’s let me
push boundaries, complete numerous
bucket list adventures and grow into
the human being I had always hoped to
be. And all by sitting quietly in January
thinking where the heck do I want to
go?
Einstein wrote, “Learn from yesterday,
live for today and hope for tomorrow,”
and this is a good time to do just that.
So, resolutions or goals, a simple plan
or an elaborate mission, it’s up to you
– and if you decide to proceed in such
a fashion, here’s to this year’s Dragon
helping you on your way.

Home sold for $1.2m after being
overlooked 12 months ago

A RENOVATED home no-one
wanted 12 months ago was in
hot demand last week, with four
people fighting over it within
seven days of it hitting the
market.
The lakefront home on Chilwell
Pl, Halswell, attracted so
much interest an acceptable offer
of $1.1 million was made within
a few days and the auction date
brought forward.
Only two of the four registered
bidders put their hands up during
Thursday’s auction and the
hammer finally fell at $1.279m
after 36 swift bids.
Harcourts Grenadier listing
agent Lin Ma said it was a fastpaced
auction that was over in
two minutes.
“They didn’t want to give
up. The bidding was very fast
because everybody was under
pressure.”
Ma said it was a massive
turnaround from a year ago
when the same property failed to
attract any bidders when it went
to auction and was subsequently
passed in.
They pulled the home off the
market before deciding to have
another go at selling it at the
start of this year due to a change
in circumstances.
The owner paid $980,000 in
February 2022, but had spent
about $100,000 renovating it.
The owners had great taste, Ma
said, and had installed a new
kitchen and bathrooms. It also
had a great view of Westlake and
a private backyard next to the
reserve. And while the owners
had been unable to sell it for
a profit last year, this year had
been a completely different story
with them walking away with
$199,000 even after factoring in
the cost of the renovation.
“It was a very good result,”
Ma said, adding prices seemed
to be similar to back when they
bought it two years ago.
“Compared to 2022, I think
it (the market) is similar to that
time. But it really depends on
the property and how you are
marketing it.”
The sale price was also above
the 2022 RV of $1.105m.The new
owners are a local couple looking
to downsize.
“They had to spend more,
but they are so happy. They just
love it, love it. It’s such a unique
house.”
Ma believed the biggest change
in the last year was that buyers
were feeling more confident that
the market had already hit the
bottom last year and were also
not expecting any further interest
rate hikes.
“Last year people were worried
the interest rates were still rising,
that kind of thing.”

Try something a bit different with carrots
Warm parsnip, carrot and
yam salad with yoghurt
and honey dressing
Serves 4-6
Ingredients
4 carrots, peeled, ends removed
and cut in half lengthways
2 parsnips, peeled, ends removed
and cut into thick rounds
cut on the angle
500g yams, washed and cut in
half if large
3 Tbsp oil
6 cloves of garlic, lightly
squashed
8 sprigs of fresh thyme
2 Tbsp honey
sea salt and freshly ground
pepper
200g baby spinach or kale
Dressing
2 Tbsp cider vinegar
1 tsp honey
2 tsp Dijon mustard
¼ cup unsweetened natural
yoghurt
1 Tbsp good quality oil
Method
• Preheat the oven to 190 deg
C.
• Put an oven dish into the
oven to heat up while preparing
the vegetables.
• Place all the vegetables into
a bowl, add the oil, garlic, thyme
and first measure of honey. Season
well with salt and pepper.
• Pour all the contents into the
hot oven dish and bake for 20
minutes or until the vegetables
are tender.
• When the vegetables are
cooked, mix the ingredients
together for the dressing.
• Add the spinach leaves,
lightly combine and transfer to
a serving bowl. Either serve the
dressing on the side or pour over
and serve.
Carrot and cheddar
flapjack
Serves 8
Ingredients
150g rolled oats
2 carrots (175g), grated
175g cheddar cheese, grated
pinch paprika and dried
oregano
1 egg
1 tsp salt and cracked pepper
1 Tbsp butter
1 Tbsp sunflower and sesame
seeds (optional)
Method
• Heat the oven 180 deg C.
• Line a 20cm square tin with
baking paper.
• Mix together the oats, seeds
(optional), carrot, cheddar and
spices.
• Add the egg and season
lightly. Mix well to combine.
• Press into the tin and dot the
surface with the butter.
• Bake for 25 minutes or until
golden.
• Allow to cool before cutting.
Carrot, orange & caraway
soup
Serves 8-10
Ingredients
1kg carrots, peeled and sliced
2 onions, peeled and diced
500ml orange juice
4 Tbs butter
4 tsp caraway seeds
400ml chicken stock
2 shots Aquavit* (optional)
Method
• Melt butter in a large saucepan
over medium heat.
• Add onions and sauté for two
minutes.
• Add carrots and sauté until
carrots are soft, about 15 minutes.
• Add caraway seeds and cook
for 30 seconds.
• Add chicken stock and orange
juice.
• Cover and simmer until
the carrots are tender, about 35
minutes.
• If using a stick blender, remove
from heat and blend soup
to a puree. If using a food processor,
pour soup through a large
sieve to separate the solids. Place
the carrot/onion portion into a
food processor and puree. Once
smooth, add back to saucepan
and mix.
To Serve
• Return to heat in a saucepan
and bring to simmer, adding
more stock if too thick.
• Check seasoning; add a shot
or two of Aquavit.
• Garnish with a swirl of cream
and a sprig of coriander.
Tip:
This soup is better made a day
in advance, as the perfume of
the caraway develops overnight,
much like a curry, so allow to
cool, cover and refrigerate.
*Aquavit is a Scandinavian
caraway liqueur available at some
liquor stores or specialty food
stores.

Serves 2
Aphrodisiacs: Rose, hibiscus,
pomegranate, champagne
Ingredients
1 cup sugar
2 cup pomegranate juice
4 hibiscus tea bags (any fruit
tea with hibiscus will do)
3 tbsp rose water
champagne
(use lemon-infused soda water
for a mocktail)
Method
• Mix together sugar and
pomegranate juice in a saucepan,
bring to the boil and stir until
the sugar is dissolved
• Turn off the heat, add tea
bags and let infuse until the cordial
has cooled down
• Once cooled add rose water,
pop in a clean bottle and store in
the fridge for up to 3 weeks
• To serve, mix 1 part over ice
and top with 4 parts champagne
or sparkling wine
Pink Beet Spaghetti with
Basil Pangrattato
Serves 2
Aphrodisiacs: Beetroot, garlic,
basil
Ingredients
Sauce
2 medium beetroot, washed
½ cup cashew pieces, soaked in
boiling water 1 hour
¼ cup olive oil
2 cloves garlic
2 Tbsp nutritional yeast
1 tsp onion powder
handful fresh basil
Method
• Preheat oven to 180 deg C
• Halve the beetroot, then
place cut side down in a small
baking dish and cover with foil
• Bake 60-90 minutes until
tender all the way through and
allow to cool
• Once cooled peel skin off
then place in a blender with the
rest of the ingredients blending
until completely smooth and
emulsified
Pangrattato
2 slices day old bread
3 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, diced
handful fresh basil, torn
zest 1 lemon
Method
• In a pan, fry on medium
heat, add the oil and garlic and
fry until just starting to colour
• Add the bread and toast in
the oil until golden
• Stir through lemon zest and
basil, season with salt and pepper
and take off the heat
To assemble
• Cook 200g spaghetti to
packet directions, drain, reserving
¼ cup cooking liquid
• Stir this through the sauce
and top with pangrattato
Chilli, pink peppercorn
& sea salt after-dinner
truffles
Aphrodisiacs: Chilli, pepper,
chocolate
Ingredients
1 cup coconut cream
200g dark chocolate, broken
into pieces
1/2 tsp chilli flakes
1/2 tsp crushed pink peppercorn
1/4 tsp sea salt
Method
• Gently heat coconut cream
until just boiling. Take off the
heat and add the chocolate, chilli,
pepper and salt and stir until
the chocolate is melted and silky
smooth.
• Cool in the fridge until set
enough to handle.
• Once set, roll into 1 Tbspsized
balls then roll in cocoa
powder. These can be stored
in the fridge for 2 weeks or the
freezer for 3 months. Stirred
through hot milk makes a great
hot chocolate.

All the usual effusive new
vehicle descriptors were rolled
out at the launch of this second
generation Kona four months
ago. Added to the mix are
claims it sets a new compact
SUV standard with its futuristic
design and economical Hybrid
variant that headlines with
a spacious, versatile cabin
featuring a clever ‘floating’
horizontal dash and standard
12.3-inch multimedia system.
In short, these all add up to

across the board compared to its
predecessor. It addresses several
niggles people had with that, not
the least of these was a lack of
cabin and load space, and benign
styling, that had all the appeal of

engine, with an electric motor –
powered by a 1.32kW/h battery
– chipping in with a handy
additional 32kW and 170Nm
as required. I was surprised at
how far the test vehicle would
run in electric mode in aroundtown
driving at speeds of up
to 50km/h without a helping
hand from the petrol motor.
Performance is less convincing
on steeper up hill grinds if
the vehicle is under load. Also
climbing at the same time is
engine noise. A smooth and
well-sorted 6-speed automatic
does everything that’s asked
of it across a range of different
driving situations.
There is plenty to enjoy
and room to do it thanks to a
noticeably larger cabin and more
voluminous rear cargo hatch.
Rear leg and headroom is vastly
superior. Second-row shoulder
room (1,402mm) is also among
the largest in its class.
All models feature alloy wheels
as standard, LED headlights and
taillights, and dual-zone climate
controlled air conditioning. Top
shelf variants such as the Limited
N-line have additional touches
such as an 8-speaker premium
audio system and power tailgate.
Latest in-car connectivity and
technology is expertly showcased
on a 10-inch touchscreen
multimedia system.
The underpinnings are
conventional with MacPherson
strut front suspension with
a multi-link rear end. In the
transition to this model, the
suspension has benefitted from
further refinements, such as
redesigned rear suspension
mounting bushes, and retuning
the springs for improved ride
comfort. On the downside, road
noise especially over coarse chip
seal is more intrusive than you
would expect from a premium
priced model.
