A warm welcome to 2024.
It’s the Year of the Dragon and
I’m told by Chinese friends
that this means an extremely
auspicious year, likely to bring
good fortune – so I’m hoping
you enjoy any opportunities that
come your way.
I love the entry into a new year. There’s
the excitement of what’s ahead, either
real or imagined, forgiveness for
everything that didn’t go well and there
are also the beautiful learnings that
emanated from the year that’s been.
I’m always curious about what lies
ahead and having a plan is one of the
secrets that allows me to embrace that
future.
I’m not alone in planning, nor are my
methods unique, but with a large dose
of personal accountability and a great
work ethic it’s highly likely that any
goals or resolutions that are set do end
up being achieved, if not surpassed.
Whenever you speak to people, they
will give you one of two responses to
the prospect of New Year’s goals or
resolutions.
The first response is often ‘they simply
don’t work’ and for some – and
we’ll delve into the actual statistics
supporting this soon – that’s the truth.
American studies (sorry, I couldn’t find
any relating to New Zealand) provide
the following:
38% of people have said that they
were going to commit to New Year’s
resolutions but of those a massive 92%
didn’t follow through or faltered very
early.
That makes the percentage of those
who actually set goals this way, and at
this time, tiny.
Here then is the second group of
people who at this time on the calendar
are knee-deep planning, writing,
envisaging and committing to the year
that they want to see for themselves.
This can include goals around position
or job progress, financial wellbeing
and debt reduction, family and friend
relationships, and connection, health
and numerous other personal matters.
It can be as lofty as some incredible
endurance or sporting feat, or as simple
as writing down what you’re grateful
for and hoping for more life benefits
because of this.
I’m in the second group, having always
committed to writing my hopes for the
year ahead whilst considering personal,
professional and family goals.
I’ve done this for at least 25 years and
I find the New Year is a perfect time to
undertake such a plan. In fact what was
once a pretty basic couple of sentences
is now a beautifully written journal
looking at all aspects of health, what
I expect to do for myself, the business
and the community, plus much much,
more. I then read this daily, review it at
least quarterly and celebrate the results
annually.
It’s been an incredible journey. It’s let me
push boundaries, complete numerous
bucket list adventures and grow into
the human being I had always hoped to
be. And all by sitting quietly in January
thinking where the heck do I want to
go?
Einstein wrote, “Learn from yesterday,
live for today and hope for tomorrow,”
and this is a good time to do just that.
So, resolutions or goals, a simple plan
or an elaborate mission, it’s up to you
– and if you decide to proceed in such
a fashion, here’s to this year’s Dragon
helping you on your way.
