Family rush to raise funds for 

Oscar’s life-changing surgery

THE FAMILY of a young 

man with a debilitating, 

rare abdominal syndrome 

is desperately fundraising 

for a life-saving operation in 

Germany. 

Oscar Parker, once a thriving 

musician, singer, and rep 

hockey player at St Bede’s College 

now faces a life-threatening 

challenge. 

Four years ago, his health 

took a downturn, leaving him 

with debilitating symptoms and 

a mystery illness.

Fast forward to February 

2024, 21-year-old Oscar finally 

has answers – a confirmed diagnosis 

of abdominal vascular 

compression syndrome (AVCS), 

an exceedingly rare disease, 

especially in males. 

Oscar was diagnosed with the 

rare syndrome by Dusseldorfbased 

vascular surgeon 

Wilhelm Sandmann after his 

family found a Facebook group 

and connected with other 

families going through similar 

situations.

Halswell 

patrol 

fundraises

vehicle

A COMMUNITY patrol formed 

in November has a bit of a 

problem – it does not have its own 

patrol car. 

Halswell patrollers are using 

other patrol cars from the surrounding 

areas, or their own 

vehicles. 

Said patrol spokesperson Caroline 

Burt: “We are a new patrol 

and are working our way towards 

a car.” 

She also said the patrollers are 

in training, a process that takes 

about three months. 

“This means completing online 

modules and participating in 

patrols. 

“These patrols are either with 

other patrols (I went out with 

Christchurch South) or in our 

private cars with signage and a 

supervisor from another patrol.” 

Patrols work closely with police 

and other agencies to assist with 

building safer communities. 

Organised and operated by 

their local communities and 

volunteers, each patrol secures 

its annual operating expenses 

through a mix of fundraisers, 

grants, sponsorships, and 

donations. 

To help raise funds, the Halswell 

Community Patrol will be hosting 

a quiz night at 7pm on Monday, 

February 26, at Craythornes Hotel 

on Halswell Rd.

Maryland in the United States, 

AVCS occurs when a person’s 

blood vessels are under abnormal 

pressure, limiting the size of the 

blood vessel and the amount of 

blood flowing through it. 

The lack of blood flow can 

make a person feel weak and 

cause extreme pain. 

New Zealand lacks treatment 

options for AVCS, so the Parker 

family aims to raise $120,000 

for Oscar to have surgery in 

Germany. 

Oscar’s oldest sister Cushla 

Parker said he grapples with 

excruciating abdominal pain, 

relentless fatigue, disrupted sleep, 

nausea, malnourishment, and a 

restricted diet, limiting him to 

just four foods and water every 

day. 

“He’s been described as being a 

great listener, always wanting to 

help but ever since he’s had this 

illness, he’s been unable to do the 

things that he loves and enjoys 

essentially because his symptoms 

prevent him from doing that,” 

she said. 

Oscar’s health struggles have 

taken a toll on his education 

and career, preventing him from 

finishing high school, pursuing 

further studies, or maintaining 

employment.

finishing high school. 

“His symptoms prevent him 

from being a typical 21-year-old, 

essentially, he’s just pretty much 

at home all the time,” Cushla 

said. 

Despite his battles, Oscar aspires 

to contribute to healthcare 

and help others facing similar 

challenges. 

Cushla said surgery alone is 

expected to cost around $95,000, 

with additional costs on top of 

that.

the German hospital post-surgery 

is about two weeks, but some 

people end up staying for three,” 

she said. 

“You need to be in the car 

anywhere from four to six weeks 

in Germany for post-op appointments, 

additional imaging and 

things like that. 

“There’s the accommodation, 

the travel but also a support person 

going with Oscar, that also 

means they’re not working for 

that period as well so there’s that 

loss of income.” 

Expensive medical bills are 

common for the Parker family as 

Oscar was also diagnosed with 

Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 13 

months. 

Oscar’s father also has Type 1 

diabetes, as does his other brother, 

who also lives with Down 

Syndrome. 

“We have a lot of medical 

consumables that already aren’t 

funded on top of his surgery, 

which is quite a lot,” Cushla said.

Growing sports association fosters 

ŌTAUTAHI Sports Association 

is synonymous with Māori sport 

in Christchurch. It has also seen 

a big growth in membership in 

recent years. So how did it all 

come about? 

The association is more than 

just a traditional sports club. 

Based in the central city, the 

organisation is strengthening its 

ties to the community and supporting 

generations of whānau to 

participate in sport and cultural 

activities. 

The club offers rugby, netball, 

softball, touch, and tag teams to 

its registration base, which has 

grown to almost 700 members. 

It also delivers cultural activities 

such as a whānau hauora programme, 

including mahi toi, 

waiata practice, te reo Māori 

initiatives, and Matariki events. 

Many of the organisation’s early 

members participated in the 

Māori Trade Training Scheme, 

bonding through their inaugural 

rugby team and helping to grow 

the kaupapa to what it is today, 

a whānau-focused hub of sports, 

recreation, and culture. 

“We have a long, rich history 

with Rehua Marae, and that is 

through the whakapapa of the 

Māori Trade Training kaupapa 

because a lot of our members 

originated from that marae,” said 

co-chair of Ōtautahi Sports Association 

Aromia Merito. 

IN ACTION: Rugby, being played here by the Taniwha U11 team at Lancaster Park, is one of the many sports offered by 

Ōtautahi Sports Association. 

The club’s popularity can be 

seen in the 48 

per cent increase 

in its membership 

numbers 

since 2020. With 

their registered

volunteers, and 

whānau involvement, 

the wider 

Merito 

community associated with the 

club is now in the thousands. 

Māori and Pasifika numbers 

have also increased, which 

Merito attributes to their focus 

on whanaungatanga (family 

connections) and manaakitanga 

(generosity). 

“Our kaupapa is heavily fostered 

on whanaungatanga and 

manaakitanga and what that 

means for our whānau who have 

come from the North Island,” 

Merito said. 

“It’s that sense of belonging; 

You’re away from your iwi, you’re 

away from your hapū, and you’re 

away from your whānau. So 

they’re looking for that connection 

to home, and that’s what our 

rugby club started from.”

Corey Te Rupe says he grew up 

around Ōtautahi Sports, as his 

father was an early member of 

the club. 

“I love the camaraderie,” he 

said. 

“I’ve made lifelong friends who 

I consider whānau through the 

club.”

with Ōtautahi Sports, having 

been founding members of the 

rugby club in 1969, while the 

Hepi whānau joined in the 1970s 

and have since had their tamariki 

and mokopuna participate in 

every sport available. 

As well as nurturing existing 

relationships, Ōtautahi Sports 

has formed new relationships as 

it has grown, collaborating with 

He Waka Tapu and Te Rūnanga 

o Ngā Maata Waka at Ngā Hau 

e Whā. The club’s focus on community 

enables it to forge new 

relationships through member 

connections and word of mouth. 

Ōtautahi Sports recognises cost

“Ōtautahi Sports is working to 

actively remove barriers, ensuring 

more people have access to sport 

and opportunities for cultural 

connection. The mahi they are 

doing today will have a lasting 

impact on the future of Christchurch 

communities.” 

While Ōtautahi Sports is fortunate 

to have been gifted a Māori 

name by Ngāi Tahu as mana 

whenua, Merito says it is not a 

sports club exclusively for Māori 

and Pasifika whānau and their 

doors are open to anyone who 

wishes to join. 

Merito says, “We’re here for 

everybody. We welcome anybody 

and everybody, but we are 

kaitiaki of the name Ōtautahi 

Sports, affectionately known as 

OT for short.”

Canada geese 

targeted at lake

A MAN has been seen using a 

slingshot to shoot large stones 

towards a flock of canada geese 

at the smaller lake at Westlake 

Reserve, Hei Hei. 

Nic was a witness to the action, 

which happened about 

10am on Tuesday last week, and 

posted her concern on Facebook. 

“I’m from Heathcote Valley, 

but was visiting my mother in 

the Hei Hei area. We were going 

for a walk along the lake when I 

noticed a man standing close to 

the water near the rocks. 

“The man, who looked to be in 

his late 60s, seemed to wait until 

none of the 20 families were 

walking past, before shooting his 

slingshot. He advised me, when 

asked, that he was “keeping the 

dirty f**kers away”. 

The Facebook post created 

“quite a heated debate”, Nic said. 

It has since been taken down 

as the man was “identified and 

later threatened” by a member of 

the public. 

The large light-brown geese 

with a white chinstrap were 

protected under the Wildlife 

Act 1953 until 2011, meaning 

the birds can now be humanely 

killed. 

The SPCA’s scientific officer 

Alison Vaughan told Western 

News the use of a slingshot to 

haze, injure or kill geese is not 

considered humane due to the 

high risk of pain, injury, distress, 

and prolonged time to death. 

She said under the Animal 

Welfare Act 1999, canada geese 

are afforded some protections 

and, depending on the circumstances, 

wilful or ill-treatment of 

a wild animal could be investigated 

by SPCA. 

Nic sent the SPCA a letter 

of concern and on Friday a 

spokesperson responded, saying 

the information provided was 

not sufficient to progress an 

investigation. 

The city council’s community 

parks manager Al Hardy said: 

“Parks staff were made aware of 

the alleged incident on 31 January 

and rangers have been patrolling 

the reserve in response 

to the claim. 

“We are actively monitoring 

the situation with warranted 

ranger staff and will continue to 

watch the area. We encourage 

anything untoward to be reported 

directly to our customer 

service team on 03 941 8999 or 

to the police, as appropriate.” 

Nic said while some people 

considered the geese to be a pest, 

no-one should take matters into 

their own hands, especially not 

in a local park.

Love Tonic Cocktail 

Serves 2 

Aphrodisiacs: Rose, hibiscus, 

pomegranate, champagne 

Ingredients 

1 cup sugar 

2 cup pomegranate juice 

4 hibiscus tea bags (any fruit 

tea with hibiscus will do) 

3 tbsp rose water 

champagne 

(use lemon-infused soda water 

for a mocktail) 

Method 

• Mix together sugar and 

pomegranate juice in a saucepan, 

bring to the boil and stir until 

the sugar is dissolved 

• Turn off the heat, add tea 

bags and let infuse until the cordial 

has cooled down 

• Once cooled add rose water, 

pop in a clean bottle and store in 

the fridge for up to 3 weeks 

• To serve, mix 1 part over ice 

and top with 4 parts champagne 

or sparkling wine 

Pink Beet Spaghetti with 

Basil Pangrattato 

Serves 2 

Aphrodisiacs: Beetroot, garlic, 

basil 

Ingredients 

Sauce 

2 medium beetroot, washed 

½ cup cashew pieces, soaked in 

boiling water 1 hour 

¼ cup olive oil 

2 cloves garlic 

2 Tbsp nutritional yeast 

1 tsp onion powder 

handful fresh basil 

Method 

• Preheat oven to 180 deg C 

• Halve the beetroot, then 

place cut side down in a small 

baking dish and cover with foil 

• Bake 60-90 minutes until 

tender all the way through and 

allow to cool 

• Once cooled peel skin off 

then place in a blender with the 

rest of the ingredients blending 

until completely smooth and 

emulsified 

Pangrattato 

2 slices day old bread 

3 tbsp olive oil 

2 cloves garlic, diced 

handful fresh basil, torn 

zest 1 lemon 

Method 

• In a pan, fry on medium 

heat, add the oil and garlic and 

fry until just starting to colour 

• Add the bread and toast in 

the oil until golden 

• Stir through lemon zest and 

basil, season with salt and pepper 

and take off the heat 

To assemble 

• Cook 200g spaghetti to 

packet directions, drain, reserving 

¼ cup cooking liquid 

• Stir this through the sauce 

and top with pangrattato 

Chilli, pink peppercorn 

& sea salt after-dinner 

truffles 

Aphrodisiacs: Chilli, pepper, 

chocolate 

Ingredients 

1 cup coconut cream 

200g dark chocolate, broken 

into pieces 

1/2 tsp chilli flakes 

1/2 tsp crushed pink peppercorn 

1/4 tsp sea salt 

Method 

• Gently heat coconut cream 

until just boiling. Take off the 

heat and add the chocolate, chilli, 

pepper and salt and stir until 

the chocolate is melted and silky 

smooth. 

• Cool in the fridge until set 

enough to handle. 

• Once set, roll into 1 Tbspsized 

balls then roll in cocoa 

powder. These can be stored 

in the fridge for 2 weeks or the 

freezer for 3 months. Stirred 

through hot milk makes a great 

hot chocolate.

Hyundai’s popular compact 

Kona urban SUV is bigger, 

bolder and more refined than its 

predecessor. 

All the usual effusive new 

vehicle descriptors were rolled 

out at the launch of this second 

generation Kona four months 

ago. Added to the mix are 

claims it sets a new compact 

SUV standard with its futuristic 

design and economical Hybrid 

variant that headlines with 

a spacious, versatile cabin 

featuring a clever ‘floating’ 

horizontal dash and standard 

12.3-inch multimedia system. 

In short, these all add up to

this model being vastly superior 

across the board compared to its 

predecessor. It addresses several 

niggles people had with that, not 

the least of these was a lack of 

cabin and load space, and benign 

styling, that had all the appeal of 

an old woolly jumper. This is in 

stark contrast to the sharp clean 

and contemporary lines of its 

successor. 

While all new in most areas, 

the status quo has been retained 

under the bonnet – the engines 

largely carry over from the 

outgoing model, with an aging 

2.0-litre petrol, plus 1.6 turbo, 

and 1.6 Hybrid variants. The 1.6 

AWD turbo receives a healthy 

power upgrade from 123kW 

Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 8; Build 

Quality 8; Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 8; Styling 

7; Value for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating. 

Average fuel consumption on road test, 4.7L/100km

is a six model affair starting 

at $42,990 for the entry level 

2.0-litre petrol Active and 

topping out at a lofty $65,990 for 

the Limited N-Line being test 

driven here. 

In the engine compartment 

the hybrid system is matched 

to a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre 

petrol engine with a battery 

electric system. With 104kW and 

265Nm of torque, flexibility is 

the vehicle’s performance forte. 

For the most part the test 

vehicle is driven using the petrol 

engine, with an electric motor – 

powered by a 1.32kW/h battery 

– chipping in with a handy 

additional 32kW and 170Nm 

as required. I was surprised at 

how far the test vehicle would 

run in electric mode in aroundtown 

driving at speeds of up 

to 50km/h without a helping 

hand from the petrol motor. 

Performance is less convincing 

on steeper up hill grinds if 

the vehicle is under load. Also 

climbing at the same time is 

engine noise. A smooth and 

well-sorted 6-speed automatic 

does everything that’s asked 

of it across a range of different 

driving situations. 

There is plenty to enjoy 

and room to do it thanks to a 

noticeably larger cabin and more 

voluminous rear cargo hatch. 

Rear leg and headroom is vastly 

superior. Second-row shoulder 

room (1,402mm) is also among 

the largest in its class. 

All models feature alloy wheels 

as standard, LED headlights and 

taillights, and dual-zone climate 

controlled air conditioning. Top 

shelf variants such as the Limited 

N-line have additional touches 

such as an 8-speaker premium 

audio system and power tailgate. 

Latest in-car connectivity and 

technology is expertly showcased 

on a 10-inch touchscreen 

multimedia system. 

The underpinnings are 

conventional with MacPherson 

strut front suspension with 

a multi-link rear end. In the 

transition to this model, the 

suspension has benefitted from 

further refinements, such as 

redesigned rear suspension 

mounting bushes, and retuning 

the springs for improved ride 

comfort. On the downside, road 

noise especially over coarse chip 

seal is more intrusive than you 

would expect from a premium 

priced model.
