and a book, Writing for the Pedal Harp, by Ruth Inglefield
and Lou Anne Neill-with an introductory
chapter by Stanley Chaloupka-has been submitted
for publication. Lucile Jennings has received a Baker
Fund Award of $4900.00 from Ohio University to
produce a videotape supplement to the book. (2)
Roslyn Rensch Erbes' grant proposal at Indiana State
University has been funded for $400.00. This will
provide for entering cross-indexed information from
harp journals here and abroad into the computer
system. (3) A newly revised grant proposal has been
submitted to the National Endowment for the
Humanities to seek funds for the establishment of a
repository for harp related documents and other items
in the Library of Congress.
Ruth Lorraine Close Musical Fellowship Awards: The
Society continued to administer this project for the
University of Oregon. As in 1979, eighteen young
harpists appeared for auditions and three were recommended
by AHS. This year, the auditions were
open to an audience for the first time. The panel of
judges: Harpcentrum Director Phia Berghout, Marcella
DeCray, composer Pierick Houdy from Quebec
whose Sonata was a required work, Ruth Inglefield
and former Philadelphia Orchestra harpist Edna
Phillips.
New Committees: Three new committees were established
by the Board: BUSINESS ADVISORY
(Chairman to be announced), made up of business-oriented
members of the Society (formation of
such a committee had been strongly recommended
by a professional business consultant); FUND­
RAISING, John Escosa, Chairman, with its first
order of business the procurement of prize money for
the 1981 Playing Competition; CONFERENCE
ADVISORY, Frances Miller, Chairman, made up of
past chairmen of AHS national conferences to assist
future chairmen in their advance planning.
Especially for our newer members, I wish to recall
retiring President Ann Stockton's remarkable record
of service to the Society. She was Chairman of the
Board from 1968 to 1974; after the one-year interval
required by our constitution, she was again elected
Director-At-Large, then as President for two terms
(1976- 80). In 1981, Ann will have completed 12
years of almost continuous work in our behalf, years
in which her executive ability, tact, grace and good
humor have enhanced the Society's image in whatever
role she has represented us.
In Pearl Chertok, the Board of Directors has chosen a
new President who brings her own combination of
qualities to the task, a task which becomes more
complex each year with the continued growth of the
Society. We have every confidence in her leadership
and look forward to working with her.
The Board wishes to thank Mario Falcao, Suzanne
Thomas, other members of the Western New York
Chapter, and the many friends from the Fredonia
State University College community who helped to
make the 1980 National Conference a rewarding experience
for us all.
