Coastguard
aids the
fire fight
COASTGUARD Sumner
patrolled Lyttelton Harbour
during the Port Hills fire
last week, keeping the water
at Governors Bay clear so
helicopters could fill buckets for
firefighting.
President Blair Quane said
the Blue Arrow Rescue lifeboat
worked to keep any
boaters or kayakers out
of the area.
“We didn’t have any
issues. There weren’t
too many people out on
the water given it was
weekdays,” he said.
About 20 members of
the coastguard crewed
Blair
Quane
the lifeboat in shifts
during the day from
Wednesday to Friday.
Firefighters needed
Governors Bay clear
to allow for easy water
bucket filling. The
lifeboat also acted as a
safety vessel in case of
any downed helicopters
over the water.
Quane said he was happy
with the work the coastguard
had done in the harbour as part
of the firefighting effort.
“It’s good the crew stood up
and took the role on.
“Probably not as exciting as
some of our callouts but it’s an
important one.”
Water front
dispute
– lockout
or strike?
THE BITTER 1951 Lyttelton
water front industrial dispute
lasted 151 days and divided many
New Zealanders.
On page 19 today, Te Ūaka The
Lyttelton Museum revisits the
dispute in its regular column in
Bay Harbour News.
The column has gems of information;
for example in the 1970s a
Lyttelton girl introduced her new
boyfriend to her father. He told
her: “You’re not going out with
that boy. His father’s a scab.” The
memory of the 1951 lockout was
still raw.
The dispute arose between New
Zealand’s Waterside Workers’
Union and its Port Employers’ Association
over wage negotiations.
The wharfies, although prepared
to work a 40-hour week, put a ban
on overtime. When they turned
up for work on February 15, 1951,
they found themselves locked
out. Those who refused to work
overtime were sacked.
As time went on, many other
unions went on strike in support.
Prime Minister Sid Holland’s
Government declared a State
of Emergency and introduced
draconian regulations.
NEWLY-elected community
board member Jillian Frater will
listen to the people of Banks
Peninsula before she decides
what her priorities will be.
Frater, who is part of leftleaning
political group, The
People’s Choice, has won the
Lyttelton seat on the Te Pātaka
o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula
Community Board.
“I want to get to grips with the
work of the community board
and what they’ve got on at the
moment,” said Frater.
She said fire preparedness and
environmental issues are two
areas where she will listen closely
to community feedback.
“Fire will be one thing that is
definitely high on people’s minds
at the moment. So I’d expect that
there will be some people who
want to come speak to the community
board about that.”
The preliminary results show
Frater, with 980 votes, was 645
ahead of independent candidate
Vicki Tahau-Paton on 335,
with the special votes still to be
counted.
“I just wanted to say a big
votes cast. There are 41
special votes to be added
to the final tally.
City council’s electoral
officer Jo Daly hoped to
declare the final result
tomorrow.
Both candidates were
pleased with the high
turnout and the community’s
Tahau-Paton also congratulated
Lyttelton for having strong
engagement during the by-election,
despite it being outside the
electoral cycle.
“We’ve had a huge
turnout of people. I’m
happy to have helped
create a more democratic
option for people rather
than just a one-horse
race.”
The candidates exchanged
text messages
after the result was announced,
acknowledging each other’s efforts
throughout the campaign.
Said Tahau-Paton: “I think
she’ll be very good and I’m absolutely
thrilled for them.”
Frater is expecting a call from
city council staff soon to discuss
her induction for the community
board and anticipates joining the
next meeting on March 11.
Frater said one of her priorities
was to build relationships with
all members of the community
board, not just those under The
People’s Choice political grouping.
The board vacancy arose after
Reuben Davidson resigned from
the community board after
winning the Christchurch East
electorate for Labour in last
October’s general election with
12,680 votes.
Mosquito warning issued after
warm weather boosts breeding
• By Dylan Smits
DANGEROUS exotic
mosquitoes’ ability to breed in
Lyttelton is increasing due to
climate change.
After a hot summer, residents
are being urged to check their
properties for potential mosquito
breeding habitats due to the close
proximity of homes to the port.
“If exotic mosquitoes were to
sneak through, breed, and infect
people, the results could be disastrous.
The diseases they carry
cause severe illness and can be
fatal,” said Dr Matt Reid, medical
officer of health for the National
Public Health Service.
Health protection officers
monitor the area around Lyttelton
Port for evidence of foreign
mosquitoes, particularly those
from tropical regions, which
could threaten public health.
Serious diseases like malaria,
dengue fever and Ross River
fever can be carried into New
Zealand by tropical mosquito
types like aedes and anopheles,”
said Reid.
“With climate change potentially
making our environment
more comfortable for these
mosquitoes, an outbreak could
PREVENTION: All Lyttelton residents are being asked to
empty collections of stagnant water on their property
to prevent exotic mosquito breeding. The wheelbarrow
pictured above is an example of a potential mosquito
breeding ground.
have significant cost implications
for the health system, and
eradication campaigns can cost
millions.”
All Lyttelton residents are being
asked by the NPHS to check
their property for collections
of stagnant water which can be
attractive breeding grounds for
mosquitoes.
“Mosquitoes struggle in the
cold but with the recent warm
weather, areas of stagnant and
pooled water can be perfect
breeding grounds.”
Reid said residents should
empty out any plant pots, buckets,
tins, jars and other items like
playground equipment that may
hold water.
Boats, dinghies, and kayaks
should also be turned upside
down regularly to prevent pooling
water.
Reid said exotic mosquitoes
have been found during checks
at New Zealand borders,
including a non-recent case
at Christchurch International
Airport, but the insects have
failed to get established because
of the efforts of health protection
officers and biosecurity staff.
“In Lyttelton, the residential
area is very close to the port.
While we do not monitor the
residential area, we want to raise
awareness because the public
can play a large role in removing
places where mosquitoes could
breed.”
Reid said this notice is based
around prevention as he is not
aware of any exotic mosquitoes
being discovered at the port.
Any larvae and mosquitoes the
health protection team catch are
sent to a Biosecurity New Zealand
laboratory in Wellington to
see if they are native or exotic,
Reid said.
Tree vandals
strike again
• By Dylan Smits
A TREE in Beachville Reserve has
been cut for the third time since
2020, frustrating efforts to shade
park benches.
The Redcliffs Residents’ association
is “upset and disappointed”
the top half of the ngaio tree in
the council-owned reserve has
been cut off.
The ngaio was planted by the
city council in January 2023 as a
replacement for the second tree
cut in the small reserve in December
2022.
The first tree was cut down to
the stump in 2020.
“People are going around, taking
the law into their own hands,
thinking that they’re entitled to
cut down and damage trees in
a public reserve,” said residents’
association secretary Dr Pat
McIntosh.
The residents’ association
believes the vandalism is likely a
targeted act.
The city council’s community
parks manager Al Hardy said this
vandalism could “reduce the overall
benefits the tree provides for
current and future generations.”
The health of the tree is being
monitored by the city council before
a replacement is determined
to be necessary.
The Showman
The Inside Story of the Invasion That Shook the World and
Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky by Simon Shuster
Acclaimed journalist Simon Shuster gives us the first inside account of the Russian
invasion of Ukraine from the perspective of President Volodymyr Zelensky and his
team, who granted him unprecedented access. Time correspondent Simon Shuster
chronicles the life and wartime leadership of Volodymyr Zelensky from the dressing
rooms of his variety show in Ukraine to the muddy trenches of his war with Russia.
Based on four years of reporting; extensive travels with President Zelensky to the
front; and dozens of interviews with him, his wife, his friends and enemies, his
advisers, ministers and military commanders, The Showman tells an intimate and
eye-opening story of the President’s evolution from a slapstick actor to a symbol
of resilience, revealing how he managed to rally the world’s democracies behind
his cause.
Anna O
by Matthew Blake
Anna O hasn’t opened her eyes for four years.
Not since the night she was found in a deep sleep by the bodies of her best
friends, suspected of a chilling double murder.
For Doctor Benedict Prince, a forensic psychologist on London’s Harley Street,
waking Anna O could be career-defining. As an expert in sleep, he knows all
about the darkest chambers of the mind; the secrets that lie buried in the
subconscious.
As he begins Anna O’s treatment – studying his patient’s dreams, combing her
memories, visiting the site where the horrors played out – he pulls on the thread
of a much deeper, darker mystery.
Awakening Anna O isn’t the end of the story, it’s just the beginning.
Michael Jordan - The Life
by Roland Lazenby
When most people think of Michael Jordan, they think of the beautiful shots,
his body totally in sync with the ball, hitting nothing but net. He is responsible
for incredible moments so ingrained in basketball history that they have their
own names: The Shrug, The Shot, The Flu Game. But for all his greatness, there’s
also a dark side to Jordan: a ruthless competitor, a gambler. There’s never been
a biography that balanced these personas-until now. Drawing on personal
relationships with Jordan’s coaches; countless interviews with friends, team mates,
family members, and Jordan himself; and a career in the trenches covering Jordan
in college and the pros, Roland Lazenby provides the first truly definitive study of
Jordan: the player, the icon, and the man.
Servicemen awarded Nuclear Test Medals
• By Dylan Smits
LONG-AWAITED medals
have been awarded to United
Kingdom servicemen for their
work during Pacific nuclear
testing from 1957-1962.
Moncks Bay resident Mike
Rossiter was recognised alongside
Ernest Robb during an
informal ceremony at the Our
Lady Star of the Sea Church
service on Sunday.
The award is the first military
medal issued by King Charles III.
Robb died in the UK in 1996
and his family, who live in
Sumner, received the medal on
his behalf.
Rossiter was head air technician
at the Royal Air Force base
on Christmas Island, now part
of Kiribati, during Operation
Dominic – a series of American
atmospheric tests conducted on
UK territory.
“You actually felt the heat,” the
84-year-old said.
“You had to face away for
the initial blast because even
with dark goggles you would be
blinded.”
Robb was a squadron leader
in the air force and served on
Christmas Island during the
first series of UK nuclear testing
in 1957, codenamed Operation
Grapple.
He was a radar specialist
and witnessed the first-ever
UK hydrogen bomb test
HONOURED: Mike Rossiter (left) and Ernest Robb’s son John
with the Nuclear Test medals.
from the air in May 1957.
The involvement of UK personnel
in nuclear tests was not
publicly recognised by the UK
government until 2022 when
mounting pressure led to the
creation of the Nuclear Test
Medal.
“It’s good to finally have recognition
after all these years, that’s
the main thing,” said Rossiter.
He served in the air force until
1977 and moved to Moncks Bay
in 2007 after two of his three
children moved to New Zealand.
Two of his children and three
of his grandchildren attended
the service to see him receive the
medal.
Rossiter’s key role on Christmas
Island was to prepare an
aerial evacuation in case of
emergency.
“We were curious about what
we were going to see, what we
were going to hear, but everyone
was in the same boat so we just
got on with the job,” he said.
Many veterans and civilians
who lived on the island during
the nuclear tests believe they
were exposed to negative health
effects from the heat and radiation.
“Some people got sick, some
people died. Whether they died
as a result of radiation sickness,
nobody will ever know,” said
Rossiter.
The UK Ministry of Defence
maintains almost all the British
servicemen involved in the
nuclear tests received “little or no
additional radiation as a result of
participation”.
Rossiter’s
Nuclear
Test Medal
engraved with
the profile on
King Charles.
No conclusive links have been
made between the radiation
exposure and negative health
effects for military personnel.
Christmas Island was home
to a small population of local
I-Kiribati who had to live with
the tests occurring offshore.
In 2015, Kiribati’s UN
representative Makurita Baaro
said “our communities still suffer
from the long-term impacts of
the tests, experiencing higher
rates of cancer, particularly
thyroid cancer, due to exposure
to radiation”.
Rossiter said the tests were
an unfortunate necessity due
to threat of the Soviet Union’s
nuclear program.
“The Western powers couldn’t
just stand by and do nothing.
People will debate this, but in my
opinion it has actually kept the
peace for 50 odd years.”
awareness in adventure race
• By Dylan Smits
THREE PLUMBERS
have raised $15,000 for a
construction workers mental
health charity by competing in
the Coast to Coast.
Chris Dick, 64, from
Sumner completed the race
earlier this month with his two
colleagues Clyde Andrews, 61,
and Steve Millson, 55.
“We had a lot of fun just
getting to the other side and
doing something like this with
your mates, helping raise money,
bringing some awareness to
the problem, made it all extra
special,” said Dick.
The 243km race is an annual
competition running from the
west to east coast of the South
Island featuring running,
cycling and kayaking.
Their team competed in the
two-day, three-person team
event, with Dick running,
Millson kayaking and Andrews
cycling.
The trio each run a branch
of the national brand Laser
Plumbing, with Dick’s branch
based in Ferrymead.
They chose the mental
health charity MATES in Construction
due to the high rate
of suicide and mental illness in
the construction industry.
“We have seen this in our
business over the years and we
work hard to talk openly or in
confidence and support each
other through tough times,”
said Dick.
A University of Otago study
in 2021 found people working
in the construction sector were
at two times greater risk of
suicide compared to the rest of
the workforce.
Dick said there are strong
parallels between the Coast to
Coast and increased mental
health wellbeing.
“There is a community of
support and encouragement
shared between competitors
and supporters that helps each
other achieve their purpose.”
The team had no position
goal and simply wanted to
enjoy their racing journey.
“These positive experiences
can really help when dealing
with mental health issues.”
Donations can be made to
the fundraiser until February
27 at givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/oldies-but-goodies.
Bringing life back to neglected park
Community groups
are at the forefront of
the redevelopment
of Barnett Park.
Reporter Dylan Smits
explored the park
with regreening group
volunteers Sue Cooke
and Cynthia Roberts
VISTA: Regreening group volunteers Sue Cooke, on the left, and Cynthia Roberts, on the right, have the long-term goal of
planting enough trees in the park to cover the walking tracks with a native canopy.
OPEN: Both sides of the Barnett Park Cave Loop Track has been open to the public since December including the staircase
up to the scenic Paratu cave which overlooks the valley. Right – regreening group volunteers encourage park visitors
to use the filled milk bottles to water the newly planted trees.
REDCLIFFS residents Sue
Cooke and Cynthia Roberts have
been volunteers in the Te Awa
Kura Barnett Park regreening
group since the organisation’s
founding in early 2021.
“It’s been an area that’s been
hugely neglected post earthquakes,”
said Roberts. “We got
together and said ‘this not good
enough.’ We want those tracks
reopened, we want the weeds
gone and we want to restore this
valley.”
Alongside the city council’s
draft development plan, the regreening
group has the long term
goal of planting large sections of
native trees in the park and creating
an attractive environment
for native birds.
“We’ve got this vision of being
able to walk from the sea up to
the summit under a canopy, that
we’ve got kererū flying, we’ve got
bellbirds, that we’ve got the return
of quite a few of the species
that are now absent from this
valley,” said Roberts.
When the planted native trees
grow tall enough, the volunteers
hope species like tui and kererū
are attracted to the area in addition
to providing shade on the
walking tracks.
The group planted 600 trees on
the eastern side of the track in
2023 and 400 on the western side
in 2022.
Barnett Park’s main Cave
Loop Track was closed after the
earthquakes due to the risk of
rockfall.
The city council cleared the
eastern side of the track which
was fully reopened in October
alongside the newly constructed
stairs leading to the scenic Paratu
cave.
The western side of the loop
track was cleared and then
reopened in December after rock
blasting by city council contractors
helped to reduce rockfall
risk from earthquakes.
Roberts said the volunteers
have had good collaboration
with the city council park rangers
in their joint efforts to reopen
the loop track and speed up
development projects.
“I think the council could see
how much effort we were putting
in and took notice,” said Roberts.
The park has attracted more
visitors and social media attention
since the full reopening,
said Cooke.
The volunteers have established
a water station where they
encourage users of the track to
take the available milk bottles to
water newly planted trees.
Cooke said regreening group
volunteers have spent thousands
of hours over the past two years
removing pest plants like boneseed,
helping to make way for
more native bush.
“Banana passionfruit is a particularly
vicious strangling weed
that we’ve been removing,” said
Roberts.
Volunteers in the regreening
group mostly come from the
surrounding area with some also
from Christchurch.
“They’re at a time in their life
when they want to give back and
they’re probably more interested
in the bigger picture, leaving a
legacy, rather than just money,”
said Cooke.
She credits several other
groups for improvements at the
park including Predator Free
Redcliffs and the Eastenders
volunteers.
“We’re all working together
really. We want to help get
much more reinvigorated native
vegetation coming back.” said
John Cook from Predator Free
Redcliffs.
The trapping group is a small
team of six volunteers who
have set about 30 predator traps
throughout the park so far.
They were active in the park
before the regreening group was
SEEDING: Te Awa Kura Barnett Park group volunteers
have spent many hours planting about 1000 trees
throughout the valley. Predator Free Redcliffs volunteer
to the area has increased
since.
Predator Free also started
laying more traps further up the
valley once the city council and
regreening group began work to
open the loop track and plant in
the valley.
“Now the trappers are focused
on supporting what’s happening
with the plantings by getting rid
of all the possums and the mice
and the rats. With the lack of
pests, more bird life will come in
as well,” said Cook.
Predator Free has been using
test traps to locate the best spots
for trapping different pests in the
valley.
“You can confirm what different
pest there are, and where
they are, based on their teeth
marks.”
During 2023 Barnett Park
traps exterminated 24 possums,
17 rats, seven weasels, three
hedgehogs, one ferret, and many
mice.
The Eastenders is a walking
club and subgroup of the Summit
Road Society. They also volunteer
building and maintaining
tracks throughout the Port Hills.
Secretary Graeme Paltridge
said the group built the drains
on the eastern side of the loop
track and maintains them on
annual visits which helps prevent
flooding or silt build up in the
new planting areas.
“We clear it all up and make it
all presentable again.”
He is impressed with the progress
the regreening group and
predator free have made.
“They’re doing a damn great
job.”
Going forward, Roberts said
she hopes more walkers, rock
climbers and other visitors come
take advantage of improvements
at the park as the restoration
continues.

keep it local
and support businesses in your community
Hell yes, free coffee!
If you could shed the expectations,
socially and personally, that are put on
you, what would you become if you
returned to yourself, to wholeness? If
you could be authentically you, creating
a purposeful, larger than life existence
based on questions like:
Why do you wake up in the morning?
What change do you want to see in this
world? What world do you want to leave
to your kids, and to their kids? What will
be your legacy?
The founders of Bonobo, Annelies
Basten & Deane Simmonds, went through
a journey of transformation as they set
a goal to create a more meaningful life,
a life in line with their values and for
the betterment of our planet, and on a
smaller scale, our community.
Bonobo is at the centre of what
unearthed when they were inspired and
challenged by the big questions above.
Born from the aim to spread a ripple of
kindness, and causing the least amount of
harm, was a hospitality venture that sets
out to create a happy work environment,
a community of like-minded people,
deep and positive connections, and an
introduction to living solely off plants.
Following from that, is the creation
of a regenerative garden just down the
road, that will provide the café with
spray-free produce grown in healthy soil
created from their own coffee grounds
and scraps, closing the loop, decreasing
the carbon footprint and recreating a
connection with the land, improving
communal and individual health.
As soon as you step into Bonobo’s
grounds, you feel there is a different
energy to the place; you cannot put your
finger on it, but it feels lighter, brighter
and positive. You can tell a lot of love and
care goes into the running of this busy
little hub, as goes into everything they
serve.
If you have never
had an oat latte, this
is the place to give it
a go. Annelies says
right from the start,
they implemented a
‘try before you buy’
kind of policy: if you
do not have a positive
coffee experience, you
do not have to pay
for it! Furthermore,
if you have never had
tofu in your life, they
are happy to give
you a sample of this
versatile, delicious plant protein.
At Bonobo, there is cabinet food and
a menu packed with your favourite
breakfast and lunch options. There is
something for everyone, including a kids
menu which functions as a colouring in
artwork to keep them happy, too.
Each and every dish served looks like a
work of art, and is carefully put together
to create the perfect
combination of
tastes and textures.
On Friday evenings
the courtyard gets
packed with people
winding down their
week with refreshing
cocktails, while
listening to the
uplifting sounds of
the DJ.
If you got to this
point and you are still reading, enjoy a
free coffee at Bonobo until 28th February
with the code ‘HELLYES’.
Bonobo is open Tuesday to Thursday
Rising star sets sights on Sumner
IT COULD be said that Adam Whitelock’s career in
real estate got off to a flying start – being awarded the
prestigious Rural Salesperson of the Year – Rising Star by
the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand in 2023.
“I worked hard, but it was a surprise,” Adam recalls.
Having grown up on a dairy farm, Adam had the
knowledge and experience to provide the best advice
to clients buying or selling properties in the rural area.
Combining those attributes with a personal commitment
to giving them the best possible service, resulted not just
in the award, but also in many satisfied clients.
ADAM AND RAZOR
at Surfing for Farmers,
Sumner Beach
ADAM
WHITELOCK
After two years in the rural sector, Adam decided
to expand his real estate experience by moving into
residential, specialising in the Sumner area.
“Living in the area with my wife and three young
children, it was the ideal opportunity for me to get into
residential sales,” he says.
Adam will be focusing on the suburbs east of the
Ferrymead bridge, areas which have always been popular
with buyers looking for desirable hill and seaside
locations. Adam is seeing “good demand out there”, and
after the dip in the market over the past couple of years,
largely due to higher interest rates, he sees it picking up
over the coming months.
Prior to taking up real estate, like his brothers Sam,
George and Luke Adam enjoyed considerable success as a
professional rugby player. He played for Canterbury in the
provincial competition, was a member of the Crusaders,
represented New Zealand in 2014 at the World HSBC
Sevens competition bringing home the title, and later
spent four years playing professional rugby in France.
He has always been a keen outdoors man, too, enjoying
hunting, fishing, swimming, and mountain running.
Charity work is also a focus for Adam and last year he
helped raise over $15,000 for various charities and is a
member of the Crusaders Alumni, actively participating
in the establishment of the Hall of Fame.
Other charitable work he enjoys includes helping with
the initiative ‘Surfing for Farmers’, which aims to boost
mental health for farmers, and being an ambassador for
the New Zealand Flying Doctor Service.
When it comes to his real estate work, Adam is equally
committed.
“In this industry, you can’t sit back. It’s very competitive,
so it’s vital to keep connecting with people. I find it’s a very
rewarding career – building relationships and helping
people get into their perfect home is very satisfying. By
being yourself and sticking to your values you will get the
rewards.”
Underpinning all Adam’s enterprises is his dedication to
his family – wife Tiffany and his three young children.
“My daughter has just started at Sumner Primary
School and my other two children are younger, so it’s a
busy household. We all love living in Sumner, and now
that I’m working out here too I can spend more time with
them, so it’s all working out really well.”
Adam looks forward to meeting more clients planning
to sell their property and welcomes enquiries from across
the Bay Harbour area.
Bare fence becomes gallery
BIRDLINGS FLAT artists
unveiled 14 creative works on
Sunday in a celebration of the
different aspects of life in the
settlement.
A crowd gathered to see the
blank fence at the heart of the
community reimagined as a
canvas.
“Because we’ve got so many artistic
people here. We thought it
would be good to give everybody
a chance to do what they want to
do rather than having to comply
with an overall design,” said
organiser Jan Reeves.
‘Bike Trail Bike’: Linda
Luscombe’s artwork
represents the Little River
Rail Trail track with wheels
from bicycles and trains.
‘The Locals’: Steph McEwin’s
artwork hopes to capture
Birdlings Flat residents
during different time periods
‘Leading
the white
stones depict
journeys to
Birdlings Flat.
The people
on these
represented
by the koru
some do not
‘Our Place’: Jan Reeves’ artwork represents the vast
landscape and the village. The piece hopes to capture
the varying aspects of Birdlings Flat life from the human
community to the natural world.
‘Beach at the end of the road’: Steve Lowndes’ artwork hopes to symbolise
the liberating feeling of viewing the horizon from Birdlings Flat beach.
Lowndes said the used elements of sky, sea and shingle are infinitely
variable and help to capture the feeling of freedom.
‘Passing Time on
the Beach’: Joy
Dixon’s artwork
asks the question,
how many hours
are spent on the
beach? Dixon is
also referencing
how vehicles often
get stuck on the
rocky beach.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 19
The 1951 lockout – 151 days of hardship
A LYTTELTON girl introduced
her new boyfriend to her father
in the 1970s. Her father said:
“You’re not going out with that
boy. His father’s a scab.” Two
decades on, the memory of the
1951 lockout was still raw.
The dispute arose between
New Zealand’s Waterside
Workers’ Union and its Port
Employers’ Association over
wage negotiations. The wharfies,
although prepared to work a
40-hour week, put a ban on
overtime. When they turned up
for work on February 15, 1951,
they found themselves locked
out. Those who refused to work
overtime were sacked.
As time went on, many other
unions – including the seamen’s,
miners’, freezing workers’, and
transport and railway workers’ –
went on strike in support.
On February 27, 1951, Prime
Minister Sid Holland’s conservative
National government
declared a State of Emergency
and introduced draconian regulations.
They imposed a complete
ban on any publications about
the dispute, and police powers
were increased – it became illegal
for wharfies to meet together
in public, even two or three of
them. Worst of all, it was illegal
to help the men or their families
by supplying them with money,
food or necessities.
The NZ Waterside Workers’
Union was deregistered and the
Government seized all funds
the various branches possessed,
but rumour has it the Lyttelton
branch transferred their assets
to a different account and were
able to keep them. There was a
police baton charge in Tāmaki
Makarau Auckland and skirmishes
in Pōneke Wellington but
no open violence in Ōhinehou
Lyttelton, however with such a
small population centred on the
port, the community was deeply
affected.
The harsh Government
regulations were often
ingeniously circumvented. A
newsletter was secretly produced
on a Gestetner machine in the
New Zealand Seamen’s Union
office on Norwich Quay and
a man known as ‘Gulliver’s
Travels’ speedily distributed such
publications nationwide, thanks
to the coastal shipping network
at the time. One ex-wharfie was
stopped and searched in the
street – he was just carrying
a roll of sandpaper, which the
policeman had mistaken for an
illegal publication.
Unable to meet in any of the
hotels as usual, the wharfies’ only
safe haven was The Loons, the
Waterside Workers Social Club.
The Loons was gifted to the
Lyttelton Working Men’s Club
by the Waterside Workers’ Union
in 1951. Many well-wishers from
around the country were willing
to supply the affected families
with food and other necessities –
in the strictest secrecy of course.
The food had to be picked up
from depots at various houses
around the port. Te Ūaka
Lyttelton Museum’s founder
Baden Norris remembered the
mortification he felt whenever
he saw his mother hiding her
shopping bag under her coat, like
a criminal, to go and collect their
family’s food.
Two young mothers, living
next door to each other, had
a problem – how to boil their
babies’ nappies in their coppers
when the firewood, supplied illegally,
proved too green to burn
without any dry kindling? The
women came to an agreement
– they would share the wooden
fence dividing their properties
to get their fires started. Over
the 151 days of the lockout, the
washing got done and the fence
gradually disappeared.
Some housewives went out
to work for the first time. The
local Lichfield Shirt Factory gave
employment to many women
and girls whose families badly
needed the income. As colder
weather set in, shortages, especially
of coal, started to hit the
population hard. Members of the
unions, which had supported the
watersiders by going on strike,
started going back to work one
by one.
On July 15, 1951, the dispute
ended.
The Government had set up
separate watersiders’ unions
in each of New Zealand’s 26
ports, but those who joined were
considered to be ‘scabs’ by the
original wharfies, many of whom
were blacklisted. It was difficult
for those blacklisted to find other
work. Some lost their houses and
many were in debt for years after.
On prominent display, just
inside the entrance to the old
Lyttelton Museum on Gladstone
Quay, were multiple colourful
certificates, reading:
‘NZ Waterside Workers’ Union
Waterfront Lockout ‘51
Stood Loyal Right Through
One Hundred and Fifty-one
Days—February 15 to July 15
1951’
The name of each recipient
is handwritten, and this was
all these poor fellows gained
from the whole sorry episode.
Just remember, if you’re in port,
never call the 1951 dispute a
‘strike’ – it was a lockout, right?
Corolla enters brave new hybrid world
TOYOTA’S TOP selling
Corolla has upped its low
engine emissions credentials
in this country, by ditching the
2.0-litre petrol model, and only
offering hybrid petrol-electrical
powertrains across the entire
range.
Corolla, is one of the best
selling cars on the planet with
more than 50 million sold since
it launched nearly 60-years ago.
Its huge success over this time
has been anchored on it being
solid, dependable and affordable,
and never waivering from those
core attributes which made
it an automotive icon. At the
same time, it has embraced new
technology including safety and
been responsive to changing
buyer demand.
The 12th generation Corolla
has been with us since 2019,
and a quantum advance over
its predecessor with a more
engaging driving experience,
something that hasn’t
traditionally been of strength
of this model. It really hits the
mark by offering high levels of
advanced safety technology,
and clever touches such as
Mobile Assistant. This uses
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Siri or Google Assistant voice
commands to perform simple
connectivity tasks like sending
a text message or setting a
reminder.
Modern consumers prefer
hybrid-electric powertrains
that are now the most popular
choice across the Corolla range.
In the last two years, a lot of
that is down to the now ditched
generous Government clear car
rebate. While the pace of buyer
interest in EVs and hybrids
will slow with the demise
of incentive, interest won’t
evaporate. I expect they will
continue to appeal to those who
value low emissions and running
costs, and vehicle fleet operators
striving to reduce their carbon
footprints. Nearly two years
ago there were eight models in
the Corolla line-up. Going all
hybrids has halved that figure,
with a hybrid model among the
casualties, with Toyota hitting
the delete button on the sedan.
This is the first time in decades
this body style hasn’t featured
in the Corolla NZ range. A
shame really, because the latest
version was one of the best, but
buyer interest has waned even
from the rental car firms and
fleet operators, traditionally the
largest purchasers of this model.
Firing the opening shot in
the hybridised three hatchback
and one wagon Corolla family
is the price leading $36,995
GX, followed by the mid-range
$39,190 SX and rounding the
hatch offering, is the flagship
$42,190 ZR being reviewed
here. There’s a GX wagon
available for $36,990. The only
remaining petrol only model is
the $76,000 high performance
229kw 1.6-litre turbo GR hatch.
It’s only available in very limited
numbers, with the 150 units a
year earmarked for our market
allocated via a ballot system. An
optional $1000 two-tone paint
job buys you a black roof that
contrasts really well with the
bolder colours in the Corolla
paint swatch, to provide a more
sophisticated look.
From a driving pleasure
perspective, the sweet 125kW
2.0-litre dynamic torque internal
combustion engine naturally
aspirated engine will be missed.
It always impressed with its
strong and zippy performance
and crisp throttle responsive.
By comparison the 1.8-litre
petrol electric hybrid, even with
a combined power output has
been bumped up to 103kw for a
healthy 13kw power gain, lacks
that zing. The extra urge for the
hybrid models is off the back of
Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 5; Fuel Economy,
on road test average consumption: 5.1L /100km Styling 7;
Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
the addition of a slightly larger
and powerful battery pack.
The extra performance is
most obvious in around town
motoring. Here the test car now
runs for longer periods on flat
terrain in EV only at speeds of
up to 50km/h. The extra hybrid
heft is less noticeable at higher
speed open road cruising.
Dropping the transmission
into Sport mode was the best
option for brisk overtaking, or
maintaining a respectable pace
on long hill climbs. It’s a pity
the Corolla here doesn’t use the
same impressive 135kW 2.0-litre
petrol electric hybrid system that
features in this model on some
overseas markets. It does a great
job in the Corolla Cross that
arrived here about a year ago.
Maybe Toyota is keeping their
powder dry on it until we see an
all-new Corolla some time in
2025.
The Constant Variable
Transmission automatic has a
dynamic shift featuring a gear
and belt drive system to improve
transmission performance in the
lower ratios, where belt efficiency
isn’t so great. It uses a gear drive
from standing starts, resulting
in stronger acceleration, and
reduces the irritating momentary
sluggishness off the mark that
characterised the CVT in the
outgoing model.
There are lots of positives
about this latest Corolla but
not a modestly proportioned
cabin. Passenger space for rear
seat occupants is cramped with
limited head and legroom. Large
wrap-around driver and front
passenger seats accentuate the
slightly claustrophobic feel for
rear seat occupants.
Befitting its top-of-the-range
status, the ZR is equipped
with a large colour head-up
display, 18-inch alloys, leather
and suede accented sports
front seats, 8-speaker premium
audio system, ambient cabin
illumination, and high-grade bi-
LED headlamps.
This new model has an even
smarter version of Toyota’s Safety
Sense technology package, with
one of the headline changes a
pedestrian and cyclist detection
system. Some other notables
items from this package’s bag of
safety tricks, are autonomous
emergency braking, all speed
dynamic radar cruise control
and automatic high beam on and
off.
Handling went up several
notches with his newest Corolla
I cannot remember a version
that got close to this one for crisp
road holding and supple riding.
The suspension acts quickly and
decisively to calm and soothe
the vehicle and its occupants
through unexpected changes in
direction by the driver, or the
road surface.
This Corolla is full of surprises,
most positive around how it
rides, drives and handles.
