Choral joy after tragic loss

WHEN ALEYNA Osman’s father, 

Husaini Bin Hafiz died suddenly 

in 2017 from a cardiac condition, 

her mother offered her whatever 

she needed to cope with the loss. 

The 50-year-old was living with 

undetected Wellens syndrome and 

died while on his way to work as 

a Christchurch Hospital mental 

health registrar after dropping 

Aleyna at school. 

The then eight-year-old chose to 

sing to deal with her grief. 

“I thought she would have asked 

for a stuffed bear or a doll but 

strangely she said she wanted to 

join a choir,” her mother Juliana 

Osman said. 

“By luck, the Christchurch City 

Chorus had a Treatme offer for six 

weeks of training and just after 

her 11th birthday, Aleyna joined 

as a junior choir member. She 

competed in her first regionals at 

the age of 12.” 

Now, the 14-year-old is off to 

Kansas City, Missouri, in October, 

to sing at her first Sweet Adelines 

International Jazz Competition 

with the Christchurch City Chorus, 

which her mother is also part 

of. 

“The prep . . . mental, psychological, 

physical . . . the experience . . 

. the journey is what we are most 

excited about. It’s no easy feat, but 

you never feel alone,” said Osman. 

“And of course, a mum-anddaughter 

team is so much more 

fun – when we practice together 

in the car or the kitchen, it’s great 

harmony.

Residents plead for action on boy racers

EXCESSIVE SPEEDING and 

spinouts have pushed Belfast 

residents to ask for deterrents 

like anti-hoon bars, anti-skid 

surface spray, and security 

cameras. 

Charlotte Gavin, a resident 

of more than 25 years, said 

the interactions between boy 

racers and locals are becoming 

more frequent and hostile with 

people at their wit’s end from the 

intimidation and damage caused 

the illegal activity. 

Gavin presented her concerns 

to the Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood 

Community 

Board. 

“Belfast is one of the fastestgrowing 

residential communities 

and a gateway to the city from 

the north. This is also one of 

Christchurch’s oldest suburbs 

. . . many of the streets were 

designed to provide access to a 

growing industrial area which is 

now retracting,” she said. 

“Therefore its intended use and 

design is redundant, being no 

longer fit for its existing purpose 

for the quiet enjoyment of residential 

activities.” 

Gavin said the new Northern 

Motorway and Johns Rd former 

highway provided a wider than 

normal roading infrastructure, 

which sees opportunities for 

disruptions. 

The main areas of concern 

are Belfast and Blakes roads,

could be installing security cameras and providing boy 

racers with an area away from residential zones.

off Tyrone St – Donegal, Third 

and Richill streets – as the three 

intersecting roads are “extremely 

wide”. 

“There are also a number of 

quick road exits available to 

these individuals who are intent 

on disturbing the peace to evade 

capture. 

“With all respect to the police, 

spinouts are not a priority . . . 

the ultimate result of any call-in 

is for the culprit to be notified 

via a police scanner and escape 

via many of the motorways available.” 

The board chair, Bridget Williams, 

said its biggest concern 

comes back to safety. 

STOP THE SPEED: Use of deterrents like the Omnigrip 

Direct anti-hoon bars which have been installed in 

Moreton Bay, Queensland, could stop excessive speeding 

and spinouts. 

“It’s about making sure 

whānau feel safe in their homes 

and neighbourhoods and behaviour 

of this nature can not 

only disturb peace and quiet, but 

if not handled, can escalate to 

reckless, which we see this situation 

as being.” 

Gavin mentioned one option 

to prevent hooning could be to 

trial pavement treatment, like the 

calcite bauxite treatment which 

is laid down at two intersections 

in Moreton Bay, Queensland. 

“Cath Tonks, councillor for 

Division 9 Moreton Bay, wrote: 

Council will continue to monitor 

the effectiveness of the trial 

pavement treatment to reduce/ 

deter hooning in this area, by all 

accounts it has seen a dramatic 

reduction.” 

Other alternative options 

include installing anti-hoon bars 

such as the Omnigrip Direct, 

anti-skid surface spray, security 

cameras and providing boy racers 

with an area away from 

residential zones. 

“We want to leave no stone 

unturned and try a range of 

measures with the resources we 

can access, and the pavement 

treatment is an option to explore,” 

said Williams. 

Gavin plans to meet with the 

police and she will then update 

the community board.

St Margaret’s students 

pass with flying colours 

MORE THAN 96 per cent 

of students at St Margaret’s 

College achieved pass rates in 

NCEA levels two and three and 

university entrance. 

Executive principal Diana 

Patchett said she was proud of 

everyone. Ninety-eight per cent 

of students sitting university 

entrance last year passed, while 

96 per cent passed NCEA level 

three, and 97 per cent got level 

two. 

“Our girls consistently 

achieve exceptional results, 

reflecting their strong work 

ethic, and the commitment 

of our teaching staff to giving 

our students the very best 

foundation for their future 

studies and careers,” said 

Patchett. 

“Building on St Margaret’s 

history of academic excellence, 

this year’s results affirm our 

decision to create our own year 

11 curriculum, launched in 

2022 to meet the specific needs 

of our girls. 

“Followed by our dual 

pathway of NCEA and 

International Baccalaureate 

(high quality international 

education programmes), this 

bespoke curriculum gives our 

girls the strongest possible 

grounding for further study.” 

Over the past six years, the 

students have achieved an 

average pass rate of 98 per cent 

for both levels two and three, 

with more than 70 per cent 

having achieved excellence or 

merit endorsement. 

The achievement rate of 

St Margaret’s students for 

literacy and numeracy has also 

surpassed the national results, 

with year 11 students passing 

at 87 per cent and above across 

numeracy, reading and writing, 

and year 12 students passing at 

99 per cent. 

The Ministry of Education 

said 41,000 New Zealand high 

school students attempted some 

or all of the NCEA assessments, 

with average pass rates of 56.3 

per cent in writing, 55.9 per 

cent in numeracy and 64.4 per 

cent in reading.

rate for level three. More than 

78 per cent of Riccarton High 

School students achived a pass 

rate in NCEA level 1, 83 per 

cent in level two and 76.6 per 

cent for level three.

group overseas comes with a big 

cost - and the chorus needs help 

with funding and donations. 

That is why Penny Wenlock, 

another chorus member and 

the founder of Pukeko 

Junction Cafe, is hosting 

a private event 

at her restored 1850s 

historical home, the 

Glenmore House. 

“It is one of the few 

old historical homes left 

after the earthquakes. 

My partner and I have 

spent about two years 

repairing the damage 

and building the old 

house up to a place of 

modern living,” said Wenlock. 

“It is such an extreme joy to be 

in the chorus, to be standing on 

the rises with 100 plus women 

and making the most compelling 

chords together.” 

The fundraiser begins at three 

different times; 11am-1pm; 

1-3pm and 3-5pm, and will take 

place on March 3. 

Those who take part in each 

of the sessions will be seated and 

served rustic homemade food 

for morning tea or afternoon

tour through the house and 

gardens. 

The profits from the event will 

be donated to the chorus, which 

was co-founded in 1985 by 

Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, who 

continues today as the musical 

director. The chorus is one 

out of about 650 groups which 

took part in the preliminary 

competitions in each of the 

participating countries. 

Out of those groups, 

only 36 will go to the 

states to compete in the 

competition. 

“The top 11 choruses 

in the world will get 

to compete further 

for a place in the 

top ten – and as the 

overall international 

champions,” said 

Humphrey-Taylor. 

“This year our focus 

is on music from The Greatest 

Showman. Being in the choir, it’s 

like being on Broadway.”

Long-awaited second exit opens

PRESTON PARK residents have 

waited nearly a decade for a 

second main exit to be installed 

to lessen the congestion from its 

first entrance. 

The Marshland subdivision 

has had only one exit from 

Prestons Park Dr onto Prestons 

Rd, but now, a crucial stretch of 

road that connects the subdivision 

to Mairehau Rd has been 

constructed. 

It will be open in about two 

weeks. 

Lyn Bunn, 

who lives in 

Prestons, said 

she has been 

waiting for the 

second entrance 

since moving 

into the subdivision 

three 

years ago. Lyn Bunn 

“Getting into 

and out of the subdivision has 

been just diabolical. It’s congested 

to hell, especially during 

the peak times,” she said. 

“Virtually everyone has been 

in favour of the exit being built.” 

In late 2022, Bunn started a 

petition demanding action on 

the unfinished road which garnered 

about 700 signatures. 

The residents were told by the 

developers preparatory work 

would start in January last year. 

However, it was another six 

months of waiting before construction 

got under way in June. 

Said Bunn: “When we cut the 

ribbon, I’ll believe the exits have

been completed. It’s been delayed 

many times. 

“These exits will give the subdivision 

better access as well as 

to those driving in and out. It’ll 

help ambulances and emergency 

responders enter quickly. The 

biggest issues were the extra 

time, money, fuel and distance 

we had to travel just to get to 

other places. 

“We have been well supported 

by the local community board, 

which has continuously advocated 

for this.” 

Waitai Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board chair Kelly 

Barber said getting a second exit 

has been one of his priorities 

since being elected onto the 

board. 

“I just want to say, I apologise 

to the community that this hasn’t 

been fixed sooner. It shouldn’t 

have taken so long.” 

Construction of the exit, which 

is installed at the south end of 

the subdivision, meant residents 

were forced to take an alternative 

route to the main northern exit 

or head out a narrow eastern one. 

The limited options left the residents 

concerned and frustrated 

about congestion and safety. 

Barber said the cars trying to 

leave get “stacked up for miles” 

along Prestons Park Dr and then, 

residents of the subdivision have 

to drive “about 4 kms” to get out. 

“With the exit opening being 

imminent, I would like to thank 

Lyn who instigated and pushed 

for the exit as the people of 

Preston have been waiting a very 

long time. 

“I’d also like to thank the 

mayor, Phil Mauger, for his intervention 

at various times... this 

second exit will make a massive 

difference to the subdivision and 

travel to and from it.” 


Roading 

projects 

approved 

A SWATHE of transport 

projects, including at two 

Shirley intersections and two 

roundabouts, have been approved 

by the Waipapa Papanui-Innes- 

Central and the Waitai Coastal- 

Burwood-Linwood community 

boards. 

The Shirley Rd, Warrington 

St and Hills Rd intersection 

and the nearby Shirley Rd, New 

Brighton Rd, Marshland Rd and 

North Parade intersection will be 

revamped to improve safety. 

The work on the Shirley, Hills 

and Warrington intersection 

includes installing a safe speed 

platform, raised pedestrian crossings 

on the Shirley Rd slip lane, 

and a new green turning arrow 

from Hills Rd into Warrington St. 

Changes at the Shirley, Marshland, 

New Brighton and North 

Parade intersection include safe 

speed platforms, the removal of 

the left slip lane from Shirley Rd 

into Marshland Rd, and a new 

traffic island on New Brighton Rd. 

Safety improvements have been 

also confirmed for the Travis Rd, 

Bower Ave and Rookwood Ave 

roundabout in New Brighton. 

The Bridge St and Estuary Rd 

roundabout will get a makeover 

after reports of safety concerns. 

Works will include new speed 

humps and bike sharrows at 

all no stopping lines as well as 

pedestrian warning signs.

Sumner and New Brighton 

beaches into temporary sunrise 

yoga studios. 

Hundreds of people lined 

New Brighton beach from 

6.30am on Sunday for Sunrise 

Yoga with Posh Porridge – and 

a swim. 

Jess Campbell will be taking 

her Sunrise Yoga Club back to 

Sumner beach on March 3. 

The mum of three young 

girls and two stepchildren 

runs the online yoga studio 

She Blooms but teaches mainly 

from the O-Studio in the 

central city. 

She started the free beach 

classes at Sumner and New 

Brighton to help people and 

offer something different. 

“(We) finish off with an 

optional dip in the ocean, 

taking time to connect with the 

community.”

class, they meet 

up for a porridge 

breakfast.
