WHEN ALEYNA Osman’s father,
Husaini Bin Hafiz died suddenly
in 2017 from a cardiac condition,
her mother offered her whatever
she needed to cope with the loss.
The 50-year-old was living with
undetected Wellens syndrome and
died while on his way to work as
a Christchurch Hospital mental
health registrar after dropping
Aleyna at school.
The then eight-year-old chose to
sing to deal with her grief.
“I thought she would have asked
for a stuffed bear or a doll but
strangely she said she wanted to
join a choir,” her mother Juliana
Osman said.
“By luck, the Christchurch City
Chorus had a Treatme offer for six
weeks of training and just after
her 11th birthday, Aleyna joined
as a junior choir member. She
competed in her first regionals at
the age of 12.”
Now, the 14-year-old Cashmere
High student is off to Kansas City,
Missouri, in October, to sing at
her first Sweet Adelines International
Jazz Competition with the
Christchurch City Chorus, which
her mother is also part of.
“The prep . . . mental, psychological,
physical . . . the experience . .
. the journey is what we are most
excited about. It’s no easy feat, but
you never feel alone,” said Osman.
“And of course, a mum-anddaughter
team is so much more
fun – when we practice together
in the car or the kitchen, it’s great
harmony.

Beaches become yoga studios
A YOGA teacher with a specialist
interest in women’s health and
hormones is turning Sumner
and New Brighton beaches into
temporary sunrise yoga studios.
Hundreds of people lined New
Brighton beach from 6.30am on
Sunday for Sunrise Yoga with
Posh Porridge – and a swim.
And on March 3 from 7am,
Hillsborough resident Jess
Campbell will be taking her
Sunrise Yoga Club back to
Sumner beach.
The mum of three young girls
and two stepchildren runs the
online yoga studio She Blooms
but teaches mainly from the
O-Studio in the central city.
She started the free beach
classes at Sumner and New
Brighton to help people and offer
something different.
“(We) finish off with an
optional dip in the ocean,
taking time to connect with the
community.”

30-minute class,
they meet up
for a porridge
breakfast.

Christchurch, these are such
special events that have taken on
a life of their own.
“We move between New

depending on tides, do a

we can chat and connect on the
beach.”
After going through her share
of ups and downs with mental
health and hormonal imbalance,
Jess aims to help others in the
community.
“Having endometriosis since
my teenage years and post-natal
depression after my second child,
it’s needless to say that yoga,
mindfulness and horse riding has
been an unwavering friend and
tool through it all.”

Association
‘upset’ after
tree vandals
strike again

A TREE in Beachville Reserve has
been cut for the third time since
2020, frustrating efforts to shade
park benches.
The Redcliffs Residents’
Association is “upset and
disappointed” the top half of a
ngaio tree in the council-owned
reserve has been cut off.
The ngaio was planted by the
city council in January 2023 as
a replacement for the second
tree cut in the small reserve in
December 2022. The first tree was
cut down to the stump in 2020.
“People are going around,
taking the law into their own
hands, thinking that they’re
entitled to cut down and damage
trees in a public reserve,” said
association secretary
Pat McIntosh.
The association believes the
vandalism is likely a targeted act.
City council community
parks manager Al Hardy said
the vandalism could “reduce
the overall benefits the tree
provides for current and future
generations.”
The health of the tree is
being monitored by the city
council before a replacement is
determined to be necessary.

Servicemen awarded Nuclear Test medals

LONG-AWAITED medals
have been awarded to United
Kingdom servicemen for their
work during Pacific nuclear
testing from 1957-1962.
Moncks Bay resident Mike
Rossiter was recognised alongside
Ernest Robb during an
informal ceremony at the Our
Lady Star of the Sea Church
service on Sunday.
The award is the first military
medal issued by King Charles III.
Robb died in the UK in 1996
and his family, who live in Sumner,
received the medal on his
behalf.
Rossiter was head air technician
at the Royal Air Force base
on Christmas Island, now part
of Kiribati, during Operation
Dominic – a series of American
atmospheric tests conducted on
UK territory.
“You actually felt the heat,” the
84-year-old said.
“You had to face away for
the initial blast because even
with dark goggles you would be
blinded.”
Robb was a squadron leader
in the air force and served on
Christmas Island during the
first series of UK nuclear testing
in 1957, codenamed Operation
Grapple.
He was a radar specialist
and witnessed the first-ever
UK hydrogen bomb test

from the air in May 1957.
The involvement of UK personnel
in nuclear tests was not
publicly recognised by the UK
government until 2022 when
mounting pressure led to the
creation of the Nuclear Test
Medal.
“It’s good to finally have recognition
after all these years, that’s
the main thing,” said Rossiter.
He served in the air force until
1977 and moved to Moncks Bay
in 2007 after two of his three
children moved to New Zealand.
Two of his children and three
of his grandchildren attended
the service to see him receive the
medal.
Rossiter’s key role on Christmas
Island was to prepare an
aerial evacuation in case of
emergency.
“We were curious about what
we were going to see, what we
were going to hear, but everyone
was in the same boat so we just
got on with the job,” he said.
Many veterans and civilians
who lived on the island during
the nuclear tests believe they
were exposed to negative health
effects from the heat and radiation.
“Some people got sick, some
people died. Whether they died
as a result of radiation sickness,
nobody will ever know,” said
Rossiter.
The UK Ministry of Defence
maintains almost all the British
servicemen involved in the
nuclear tests received “little or no
additional radiation as a result of
participation”.
No conclusive links have been
made between the radiation
exposure and negative health effects
for military personnel.
Christmas Island was home
to a small population of local I-
Kiribati who had to live with the
tests occurring offshore.
In 2015, Kiribati’s UN
representative Makurita Baaro
said “our communities still suffer
from the long-term impacts of
the tests, experiencing higher
rates of cancer, particularly
thyroid cancer, due to exposure
to radiation”.
Rossiter said the tests were
an unfortunate necessity due
to threat of the Soviet Union’s
nuclear program.
“The Western powers couldn’t
just stand by and do nothing.
People will debate this, but in my
opinion it has actually kept the
peace for 50 odd years.”

Trio race
to raise
funds

THREE PLUMBERS have
raised $15,000 for a construction
workers mental health charity by
competing in the Coast to Coast.
Chris Dick, 64, from Sumner
completed the race earlier this
month with his two colleagues
Clyde Andrews, 61, and Steve
Millson, 55.
“We had a lot of fun just getting
to the other side and doing
something like this with your
mates, helping raise money,
bringing some awareness to the
problem, made it all extra special,”
said Dick.
The 243km race is an annual
competition running from the
west to east coast of the South
Island featuring running, cycling
and kayaking.
Their team competed in the
two-day, three-person team
event, with Dick running,
Millson kayaking and Andrews
cycling.
The trio each run a branch of
the national brand Laser Plumbing,
with Dick’s branch based in
Ferrymead.
They chose the mental health
charity MATES in Construction
due to the high rate of suicide

“We have seen this in our
business over the years and we
work hard to talk openly or in
confidence and support each
other through tough times,” said
Dick.
A University of Otago study
in 2021 found people working in
the construction sector were at
two times greater risk of suicide
compared to the rest of the
workforce.
Dick said there are strong parallels
between the Coast to Coast
and increased mental health
wellbeing.
“There is a community of
support and encouragement
shared between competitors and
supporters that helps each other
achieve their purpose.”
The team had no position goal
and simply wanted to enjoy their
racing journey.
“These positive experiences can
really help when dealing with
mental health issues.”

However, sending such a big
group overseas comes with a big
cost - and the chorus needs help
with funding and donations.
That is why Penny Wenlock,
another chorus member and the
founder of Pukeko Junction Cafe,
is hosting a private event at her
restored 1850s historical home,
the Glenmore House.
“It is one of the few
old historical homes left
after the earthquakes. My
partner and I have spent
about two years repairing
the damage and building
the old house up to a
place of modern living,”
said Wenlock.
“It is such an extreme
joy to be in the chorus,
to be standing on the rises with
100 plus women and making
the most compelling chords
together.”
The fundraiser begins at three
different times; 11am-1pm; 1-3pm
and 3-5pm, and will take place on
March 3.
Those who take part in each
of the sessions will be seated and
served rustic homemade food for

morning tea or afternoon tea, and
then be guided on a tour through
the house and gardens.
The profits from the event
will be donated to the chorus,
which was co-founded in 1985 by
Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, who
continues today as the musical
director.
The chorus is one out of about
650 groups which took part in the
preliminary competitions in each
of the participating countries.
Out of those groups, only 36
will go to the states to compete in
the competition.
“The top 11 choruses
in the world will get to
compete further for a
place in the top ten – and
as the overall international
champions,” said
Humphrey-Taylor.
“This year our focus
is on music from The
Greatest Showman. Being
in the choir, it’s like being
on Broadway.”

Stylish, smooth EV ticks all the right boxes
THE ID.4 is a milestone on
the road to full electrification
for German automotive giant
Volkswagen, clocking in as the
company’s first vehicle built on a
dedicated EV platform.
There’s plenty going for
the ID.4 in terms of space,
technology, performance, and
versatility. For our market, it’s
a two model show comprising
the generously appointed PRO
$74,990 that’s under scrutiny
in this road test, or the more
lavishly appointed $79,990 PRO+.
Both go the EV distance better
than most with a real world
electric ranges of 519km.
The ID.4 has the standard
SUV body shape with its
sibling the ID.5 opting for a
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
more sophisticated coupe-like
appearance. I preferred the cleancut
and less intricate styling of
the ID.4.
Getting behind the wheel of
the ID.4 is a tad surreal with the
vehicle sensing your presence
and automatically starts when
you sit in the driver’s seat using
the smart key.
The test car had heaps of heft
from a beefy 77kWh battery
and an electric motor producing
150 kW of power and 310 Nm
of torque. This is more than
enough and with some to spare,
to shift this decent sized SUV
with genuine zip, cocooning
you in silence, whether it’s a laid
back around town excursion, or a
lively open road dash.

Throttle response is
exhilarating and addictive.
Standing start acceleration
provided by the electrified system
makes most conventional engines
look like slouches. A single
speed automatic is super efficient
and its computer brain’s task of
choosing what gear to select is
about as easy as it gets.
A roomy and welcoming
cabin has an abundance of
usable passenger and cargo
space. Instruments and controls
are designed with meticulous
attention to detail. There’s a
12-inch central touch display,
multifunction steering wheel,
push button start, heated front
seats and steering wheel, with the
latter adjustable for height and
reach.
Safety is paramount, and the
ID.4 delivers in emphatic fashion
with a coveted 5-Star ANCAP
safety rating. This was earned
through leading edge safety
tech such as Front Assist with
Predictive Pedestrian and Cyclist
Protection. Side Assist with Rear
Traffic Alert warns the driver of
collisions with other vehicles,
cyclists, pedestrians and static
obstacles.
All the excellent ride and road
holding traits associated with
Volkswagen are embodied in
the ID.4. The suspension sees
Macpherson struts fitted at the
front and a multi link set-up
at the rear. Both work their
magic to deliver an immensely
satisfying drive, that’s right out
of the top draw. Rear-wheel drive
offers effective traction over most
road surfaces from the good, the
bad, and the down right hideous.
The high-voltage battery fits
snuggly into the floor of the
ID.4 between the axles, with its
low centre of gravity giving the
vehicle exceptional agility and
balance during brisk cornering.
With its solid and compact
European feel the test vehicle
ID.4, had a genuine and desirable
point of difference over many
of its peers. This is decidedly
advantageous in one of the fastest
growing and most competitive
segments of our new car market.
The test vehicle was subjected
to an unrelenting assortment of
bruising bumps and potholes,
on a couple of lengthy drives on
rural roads, that didn’t show a
shred of country hospitality. I
emerged from this experience
with a deeper respect of the ride
comfort and handling talents of
this outstanding EV.
