Charred landscape ... Helicopters fight the fire as North West winds extend the blaze at Mt Donald, Waipara.
Evacuations amid Waikari Valley scrub fire
By JOHN COSGROVE AND
ROBYN BRISTOW
The site where a300 hectare scrub fire
broke out in the Waikari Valley in
North Canterbury, has been
established, but the cause is still being
investigated.
The fire that broke out around 8pm
Sunday evening forced evacuations,
and kept residents near the fire on
tenterhooks during the night and on
Monday.
Significant rain on Monday evening
helped dampen down the charred
hillsides, but crews had to be taken off
the hill for safety as conditions became
slippery.
Three crews of firefighters were
back at work on Tuesday morning
supported by one helicopter.
IncidentCommander Des Irving says
crews were airlifted to the fireground
by helicopter and worked with
handtools to mop up hotspots.
He cautioned the rain has not
changed the underlying high fire
danger, and he is asking people to
remain vigilant and to call 111
immediately if they see smoke.
When Sally and Phil Thomson woke
early on Monday morninginWaipara,
stiff and tired after afew hours
sleeping in the cramped cab of their
truck, they cautiously looked up at
Mount Donald.
There was no smoke visible so they
were hoping the large scrub fire that
had forced their evacuation the night
before had gone out.
‘‘There wasn’t any smoke and we
thought the fire brigades had done a
TRUST YOUR LOCAL STEEL
BUILDING EXPERTS
great job stoppingitfrom spreading,’’
says Phil.
But once the norwester picked up
again, the fire resurfaced and the
Thomson’s stay at the Waipara
Community Centre, where awelfare
centre had been set up, was extended
for afew more hours.
The night before the couple had been
relaxing at their Glenview Farm home
on the side of Mount Donald.
‘‘We had just got home after a
wonderful day at our daughter’s at Mt
Somers, when afriend of our son’s
called and said he could see smoke up
near our property, and where was the
fire?,’’ says Phil
The couple raced outside and soon
spotted the smoke and flames coming
around the side of Mt Donald towards
them.
PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE
‘‘Luckily we had afew hours to
evacuate so the first thing Phil did was
fill up the water tanks around the
property, in case we had to turn the
sprinklers on,’’ says Sally.
Phil says the sheep were okay
because they have the run of their
small block at the moment and all they
had to worry about was the farm dog
and their two old cats.
‘‘The cats weren't keen on coming so
we left them there, packed up the dog
and things and headed down at around
midnight to the welfare centre at the
Waipara Memorial Hall –and then I
suddenly remembered the ‘chooks’,’’
says Phil.
Sally says the couple haven’t had
chickensfor afew months so they had
just bought ahalf adozen new ones and
completely forgot about them.
Mt Donald terrain hard, steep and rough
From Page 1
Once at the welfare centre the couple
say they were well looked after with lots
of coffees and food. Later they tried to
get some sleep in their truck.
Phil says fightingthe fire would have
been hardwork for the firefighters as Mt
Donald is ahard, steep, rough place to
drivein.
‘‘It’s four wheel drive country up there
with few tracks and the wind can knock
you over if you don’twatch out.’’
Sally says that when they woke at
6.30am the helicopters hadn’t arrived
yet and they could see the firefighters
were waiting to see if the blaze would
catch onagain.
‘‘It looked like it wasn’ttoo bad.’’
“There was no smoke so we thought a
miracle had occurred, Icould not
believe it had stopped as it was burning
down the hill towards us last night,’’ says
Phil.
‘‘It looked like the tracks the Knowles
and we had put in on the side of Mt
Donald over the years had worked as
fire breaks.’’
The Thomsons and other evacuees
were allowed to return to their homes
late on Monday evening.
Community day `awesome’
By SHELLEY TOPP
Loburn School hosted an open day last
Friday to thank the community and
emergency crews who fought the nearby
January 19.
Those who attended said it was an
‘‘awesome idea.’’
School principal Stuart Priddy said the
school had been closed on the day of the
fire because of the school holidays. It had
not been damaged, but the neighbouring
preschool had to be evacuated.
‘‘We wanted to show our support for our
surrounding community and the people
who helped us on that day, by inviting
them to the school to give our thanks and
let people know we are here to help,’’ he
said.
Some emergency crew members. many
of them volunteers, were unable to attend
due to fire fighting commitments on
Christchurch’s Port Hills. However
representatives from the police, Fire and
Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), the
Waimakariri District Council civil defence
emergency team, plus Waimakariri
District Mayor Dan Gordon, along with
many members of the Loburn community
and children from the preschool next
door, did attend.
They were treated to aperformance of
songs by the Loburn School children led by
te reo/Maori language teachers, Norman
Paul and his daughter Bonnie Paul. Gift
baskets were presented and ‘‘thank you’’
artwork, by the children, was presented to
the emergency crews’ representatives.
Morning tea followed, along with the
chance to meet the emergency crews’
representatives to thank them personally.
Mr Gordon said the community day was
areal sign of how much this community
cares about each other.
He also said the council would provide
Giving thanks ... Guests, emergency service and Loburn School personal gathered at the
school.
PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP
whatever support it could to help the
Loburn community recover from the fire.
Rangiora Constable Brad Moore, who
was commander of the police response
team on the day of the fire, said the
school’s community day was an awesome
event, and he was pleased to be able to
attend.
Three members of the Sefton Rural Fire
Brigade, Clive Goddard, Estelle Harmse
and Joseph Donoghue also attended along
with Dean Eades the council’s emergency
management adviser.
‘‘The fire roared through the small
community ‘‘like aspeeding, unstoppable
freight train’’ one local, Bill White said,
incinerating homes, buildings and
gardens.
But as devastating as the inferno was,
some locals consider the cleanup is even
worse because of the lingering smoketainted
air, the soot, the dust, the noise of
chainsaws felling firedamaged trees, and
the rubberneckers who seem to think it is
okay to go on to private property to take
photographs without permission.
Sharon Gooderham and her husband
Paul lost arow of 50, 30yearold pine trees
and ahighwall fence along the road
frontage of their property.
Paul is working with Rangiora
silviculturist John Woods on the the
cleanup, chopping down the charred trees
and cutting them up for firewood.
The loss of their fence and the
subsequent invasion of privacy by
rubberneckers has made her feel ‘‘very
vulnerable’’. However the community
support they received since the fire had
been ‘‘incredible.
Whiterock landfillproposer confident
ByDAVID HILL
Local DemocracyReporter
AChristchurchbased company says it is
environmental impacts.
Responding to concernsraised at a
residents meeting on Tuesday, Protranz
general manager Shaun Coakley said the
company had completed site
investigations ahead of applyingfor
resource consents.
Protranz Earthmoving Ltd is seeking to
previous landform, by filling it with
managed fill.
Resident Mike McCaleb said at the
meeting he believed the landfill would be
unstable due to the limestone and porous
rock, and the underground springs.
Mr Coakley said he acknowledged the
concerns. ‘‘We want to reassure the
community that comprehensive site
investigations have occurred and various
technical reports will be completed,
addressing factors such as stability and
ground /underground (groundwater
seepage) conditions.
‘‘These reports will be readily available
as part of the publiclynotifiable
consenting process.’’
Resource consent applications were
being prepared to lodge with Environment
Council.
Board chairperson Jim Gerard said
WSP had requested to address the board
The fourman band, comprising Wes
Gambill (guitar, vocals), Gray Tuttle
(banjo, vocals) and Randy Pasley (bass,
dobro, vocals) is based in the foothills of
the Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Their Balcairn Hall concert also
featured other music including country
singer John Denver’s popular Take Me
Blue Ridge Mountains.
They also performed John Fogerty’s
Lookin’ Out My Backdoor,aslowed down
version of Ring of Fire made famous by
Johnny Cash, and the beautiful Sea of
Heartbreak during last Saturday night’s
concert.
The frontman, Randy Gambill, also paid
tribute to his Scottish heritage reciting an
ode to adrunken Scotsman, which had the
audience in fits of laughter, and there was
also avery special, highspeed version of
Orange Blossom Special.
It was the first time aband from the
USA had performed in the small country
hall, and Randy (Gambill) praised the
venue.
‘‘You have agreat vibe going on here,’’
he said.
The band had performed before much
larger audiences of 10,000 people and
much smaller, but it was venues like
Balcairn Hall ‘‘where you can get to know
people’’ they enjoyed the most, he said.
The band's superb musicianship,
delivered with style and humour hit just
the right note with the Balcairn audience
which sang along to many of their songs.
KAIKŌURA VIEWS
MAYOR CRAIG MACKLE
New Citizens given
welcome to Kaikoura
Our latest New Zealand Citizenship
ceremony has been amajor highlight
for me recently.
Eight people obtained citizenship,
five of whom came from one family,
and who havebeen apart of our
communityfor anumber of years.
It was special to seethe children
dressed up in their traditional
costumes.
The Kaikōura community choir
KaiChorus performed, and it was
quite aspecial event.
The Mayoral Task Force is going
great guns, and we arekeen to see
this continue to evolve.
We will be lobbying for continued
support from the Government for this
important and beneficial project.
ABig thanks to Asia for coordinating
the programmesowell
and everyone involved.
Aheads up to everyone that
Council’s DiscretionaryGrants
process is open from March ,and
anyone interested can have alook at
the Kaikōura District Council
website for details around how to
apply and what the criteria is.
Summer’s not over yet and there
are anumber of exciting community
events still to happen in the
township.
Two fund raising events are coming
up shortly —one is the annual Pig &
Stag hunt on Easter weekend.
This year it is raising fundsfor the
miniature rifle club to renovate the
Kaikōura Suburban Hall
The other is the Adventure Race
from the April 19 to 21, which has just
grown and grown over the last few
years, and always manages to raise
funds to support some outdoor events
at the High School for our youth to
enjoy. Great to see some events
happening that support our
community.
Around the electorate with
STUART SMITH MP FOR KAIKOURA
‘Bluehighway’ work
The ‘blue highway’ between the North
and South Islands is served by afleet
of fiveships in the Cook Straight,
including three Interislander ferries
and two BlueBridge ferries.
The latter are privately funded and
run agood service withoutany
taxpayer assistance.
The previous government committed
to replacing the taxpayer funded
Interisland fleet with mega ferries and
portside infrastructure, otherwise
known as the iRex project, to the tune
of $775m —which has subsequently
blown outtonearly $3 billion, a
quadrupling of theoriginal cost.
Only 21 percent of the $3b was
allocated to the replacement of the
ferries themselves and the only option
for our incoming government was to
refuse the original addition funding.
We have since set up an expert
advisory group to provide
independent assurance on how to
proceed with the ferry service and end
the previous government’s poor
project management.
An additional concern was the
likelihood of further cost increases
effecting our ability to bring the books
back in order, something voters can
rightly expect to be addressed.
Time critical decisions such as
replacing the aging ferry service still
need to be well informed, well
planned, well researched, and
sustainably funded to ensure asafe
and reliable ferry service across Cook
Strait is available in the long term.
Supporting freight delivery,
business growth, export development
and tourism, it is vital to get this
decision right, noting that we all want
to see acosteffective solution that
increases our infrastructure
resilience.
Of course, thereare other options for
taking some of the freight off the road
with the added benefit of lowering
emissions as well.
These need to be carefully
considered as part of an overall plan to
maximise the country’s potential
economic growth and development.
Working with the community, and
business, to exploresome of these
options will be critical to future
success.
Canterbury’scoastline under the spotlight
By DAVIDHILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Conservationists say Canterbury’s
coastline has been neglected for too long
and it's time for a‘‘complete overhaul’’ of
the regional council's plan to protect the
marine environment.
Te Korowai oTeTai ō Marokura, an
organisation that protects Kaikōura’s
marine environment and fisheries, has
been advocating for an updated
environmental plan for some time.
Secretary Gina Solomon said the
council’s focus on freshwater has seen it
‘‘neglect’’ the marine environment.
‘‘It needs acomplete overhaul and I
don’t think Canterbury is doing much in
the biosecurity or invasive species
space.’’
Her comments come after Environment
Canterbury voted last week to look into
what was needed to review the
Canterbury Regional Coastal
Environment Plan.
The plan was adopted in 2005 and aims
Polling by Greenpeace showed New
impacts fishing on the ocean.
She said commercial fishing was
endangering Hector’s dolphins,seabirds,
fur seals and corals.
‘‘You’ve got the direct impacts of
Department of Conservation marine
regional coastal plans are important tools
for managing the coastal and marine
country’s coastlines.
The South Island Hector’s Dolphin
Bycatch Reduction Plan has been
developed and outlines regulatory and
voluntary measures designed to reduce
the Hectors’ dolphin bycatch towards
zero.
Measures include restrictions on
fishing, with around 17,650sqkm of South
Island coastline closed to set netting.
Around 6,988sqkm of trawl measures
are also in place, Ms Taylor said.
‘‘This includes the Canterbury
coastline, which has asetnetting ban out
to at leastfour nautical miles, and up to 19
nautical miles at Pegasus Bay.’’
Cr Robinson’s motion called for the ban
to be extended to six nautical miles, or
just over 11km from the coastline.
Balanceimportant
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Increasing the number of elected
representatives in Hurunui’s south ward
could balance out ‘‘the rural /town
divide’’, says Amberley District
Residents’ Association chairperson Roy
Myers.
The Hurunui District Council is
considering whether to increase the
number councillors for its south ward,
which includes Amberley, or to create a
community board to support agrowing
population.
Mr Myers says the issues affecting the
town were different from the smaller
communities spread throughoutthe
district.
‘‘If you look at the smaller
communities, their interests are much
more directly focused on their own
needs in acommunity of maybe afew
hundredpeople.’’
Whereas alarger town had more
diverse needs and concerns, he said.
‘‘In Amberley, the population has
more or less doubled over the last 10
years and alot of them are newcomers.
‘‘Over time their expectations for local
servicesmight increase, but at the
moment if you look at what is provided,
we don’t have much services.’’
He said Amberley’s town centre
lacked acommunity space, other than
the Tin Shed at the Amberley Domain,
while aproposed cycleway linking
Amberley and Amberley Beach had yet
to eventuate.
Mr Myers says the challenge was
getting people engaged in local politics.
In the 2022 local government
elections, eight candidates stood for four
the seats in the south ward, but the voter
turnout was around 40 percent.
‘‘I think alot of people feel quite
distancedfrom the council,’’ he says.
A working party is conducting a
representation review and is due to
make arecommendation to next month’s
council meeting.
It will be consultedoninApril,
alongside the 2024/34 Long Term Plan
consultation, chief executive Hamish
Dobbie said.
He said the council was exploring a
range of options,including retainingthe
status quo of 10 councillors (four each
for the west and south wards, and two for
the east ward).
Therewas one community board for
Hanmer Springs, while community and
wardcommittees representedthe
various ‘‘communitiesofinterest’’
throughout the district.
Mr Dobbie says the main difference
between the committees and community
boardmembers was the latter were
elected and remunerated.
Community committees were given a
similar delegation to acommunity
board, with major decisions made by the
elected council.
Mayor Marie Black says the priority
was ensuring‘‘communitiesofinterest’’
were represented.
The south ward’spopulation is around
5680, with just under half living in the
Amberley township, while the districtwide
population is 13,800, based on Stats
NZ 2023 population estimates.
tourist complex to be developed over a
larger area on the Kaikōura waterfront
have received wide support in
submissions.
But while 71 percent of the
submissions supported extending the
pool's lease area, some residents wanted
anew site to be found.
Submissions were heardonthe
proposed lease area extension for the
hot pool complex at aKaikōura District
Council hearing on Wednesday
(February 14).
Kaikōura Springs Ltd was granted a
lease in July 2022 for the proposed
development on the former Kaikōura
LionsCommunity Pool site, near
GoochesBeach.
While developing plans, Kaikōura
Springs Ltd found the site was
financially unviable, and approached
the council last year requesting to
increase the lease area from 2400 square
metres to 3000 square metres.
It wouldrequire the relocation of the
toilets,playground and barbecue area at
the developer’s expense.
The proposal went out for public
consultation at the end of last year, with
87 submissions received.
Nine submitters were heardduring
the hearing, with two in supportand
sevensupporting the hot pools concept,
but calling for an alternativesite to be
found.
The councillors adjourned the
meeting to clarify some of the points
raised, before recommencingatalater
date.
Among those raising concerns was
Duncan Cotterill senior associate Jamie
Robinson, who was speaking on behalf of
alocal resident.
She said restricting the consultation
process to consider whether the lease
area on the Esplanade should be
extended was ‘‘fundamentally unfair’’
and should have been completely
reopened.
‘‘[It limited] people’s ability to submit
when the entire lease is being
reconsidered and we don’tknow
whether an alternative site was
considered.’’
But Kaikōura District Council acting
chief executive Peter Kearney, speaking
after the hearing, said the criticisms
were unfair.
‘‘We understand it is an emotive
subject, but nothing is set in concrete
yet.
‘‘Most people are in support, but we
need to make sure everything in the
process is done right.’’
Should the lease extension be granted,
the developer will still need to apply for
the necessary resource and building
consents, Mr Kearney said.
The developerhad consideredother
sites, but came back the Esplanade as
the preferred site.
‘‘They can’t come up with plans and
designs until they knowhow much area
they can have, so Ithink it is unfair to
expect them to produce detailed designs
at this stage.’’
Residents have expressedthey wanta
singlestorey buildingtofit with the
environment, according to the
submissions.
The Kaikōura Lions Community Pool
was destroyed in the 7.8 magnitude
earthquake in 2016. Anew Kaikōura
Aquatic Centre opened in the recreation
reserveoff Scarborough Street in 2021.
Expressions of intereststodevelop the
Esplanade site were sought in 2020, with
just two responses received.
Seekingsolutions
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury’s mayors are
seeking alocal solution to Three
Waters management.
Retaining local ownership has
always been the goal, while exploring
collaboration with neighbouring
councils, says Waimakariri Mayor Dan
Gordon.
Mr Gordon was reactingtothe repeal
of ThreeWaters legislation lastweek
and the announcement of the
Government’s Local Water Done Well
policy.
‘‘At this stage we’re celebrating
Three Waters remaining in community
ownership ahead of the new bill being
introduced to Parliamentlater this
year.
‘‘If the legislation mirrors the policy
direction signalled by the
Government, it providescouncils
options to either go it alone or work
together in acouncilcontrolled
organisation or similarmodel.
‘‘We will be having informal
discussionsalong these lines with our
local government neighbours while
this takes place, but essentially we will
be waiting to see what the legislation
says.’’
Mr Gordon says the new policy
mirrored the model putforward by
Communities 4Local Democracy
(C4LD), which represents around 30
councils.
He said no decision would be made
without consulting with the
community, which is likely to take
place later this year.
The Waimakariri, Hurunui and
Kaikōura district councils were all
C4LD members.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said the
Canterbury Mayoral Forum had been
advocating for aregional approach to
managingThree Waters for several
years.
‘‘It was aproposal the Canterbury
councils put to the previous
Government early in the piece, but it
was rejected.
‘‘We see it as the best outcome to
achieve the scope and scale needed.’’
Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle said
the repeal of the legislation is an
opportunity ‘‘to start again’’.
‘‘We have alot of work to do and the
Mayors need to get together to work
out what is best for our communities
andour region.’’
Mr Mackle and Mrs Black said there
is already ‘‘a synergy between
Kaikōura and Hurunui’’, with a
number of shared services already in
place including IT services, Civil
Defence and building staff.
And there is a‘‘pretty tightnetwork’’
acrossthe three North Canterbury
councils,including Waimakariri, they
said.
Proven recipe maintained
Amuri A&PShow copresidents
Richie and Janine Ormond have
stayed with the proven recipe for
agreat show –make it an
entertaining, fun, actionpacked
day out that brings town and
country people together.
The Ormond family have
farmed Pukeiti, on the Amuri
Plains, since Richie’s father
moved there from Hawkes Bay in
the 1930s.
From WW2 until the 1990s, it
was principally asheep farm, but
with the increase in dairy
farming in the area, the family
changed to amix of sheep, winter
dairy grazing, and the rearing
Friesian bull calves through to
finishing.
The addition of irrigation
several years ago allowed them
to diversify into the cropping of
maize, corn and grain, with
surplus feed sold.
The Amuri A&PShow has
been part of Richie and Janine's
lives for many, many years.
Richie has attended working
bees for the association for over
40 years and has been on the
show committee for many years.
Janine has been the
photography marshal for 14
years.
As ayoung boy, Richie
remembers the show grounds
being very bare at show time, but
now there are attractive mature
trees surrounding the ring,
where families can picnic while
watching the activities.
There are also trees providing
shade in the trade site areas.
Copresidents ... Richie and Janine Ormond.
Janine says the running of the
Amuri A&P show has always had
great support from alarge and
enthusiastic committee of all
ages.
‘‘We value the knowledge and
input from all the past presidents
and their wives who still have
responsibilities for acouple of
years. It’s thanks to all the
sponsors, tradespeople, judges,
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
marshals, section heads, the
many volunteers, and those who
gave agift calf or gift lamb as they
make the Amuri show the great
success it is,’’ she says. The copresidents
extend abig thank
you to Jamie Lissington for
keeping the showgrounds in
great order and to treasurer
Megan Williamson and secretary
Kim Balcombe for their work.
Appeal for volunteers
‘‘Golden oldies’’ can come and see the
‘‘golden oldies’’ at North CanterburyCAB,
coordinator Theresa Evans says.
She says most the CAB volunteersare
aged over 65 and retired.
Volunteering at the CAB or any other
organisation allows people to stay
connected with their community after they
retire and gives them asense of purpose.
‘‘It means they brought their life
experience of raising children and their
work experience.
‘‘For us it is about encouraging people to
see that their experience is still valued
and empathy is still valued.’’
Theresa says the CAB is looking forward
to next month’s volunteer expos,
organised by Waimakariri District
Council.
The expos came out of local volunteer
coordinator network meetings.
‘‘All of us had difficulty recruiting and
some of it is financial, because we have
limited funds to pay for advertising,’’ she
says.
‘‘For CAB, the expo is agreat
opportunity to present our service and to
let visitors know that older people are
welcome to apply to become aCAB
volunteer.’’
New recruits are fully trained, with the
next training intake in May.
The training focuses on listening, nonjudgement
and ‘‘supporting clients where
they are at’’.
Volunteers attempt to give people the
confidence and support to take action to
resolve any challenges.
‘‘We listen and take the time to talk
things through and we hope the time we
have spent with them gives them the
background information they need.’’
CAB can offer advise on anything from
services for seniors, applying for
superannuation, transport of older people,
powers of attorney and wills, how to get
‘‘One of the benefits of coming to CAB is
we have the time,’’ Theresa says.
‘‘We don’t have appointments, so we can
spend as long as aclient needs.
‘‘People might come in about one thing
and once we have resolved it, they will
often open up about other issues.
Theresa says North Canterbury CAB has
acommunity directory of local clubs and
organisations, meaning if any prospective
volunteers find CAB is not for them, they
can be referred to other organisations
looking for volunteers.
Presbyterian Support is looking for
volunteers to assist with the Totara Club
day programme and volunteer van
assistants.
The Waimakariri District Council is
hosting volunteer expos from 5pm to 7pm
at the Rangiora Library on Friday, March
Decluttering made
easier withhelp
Moving into aretirement village, or
preparing to downsize your home, is
so much more than just simply
making the initial decision to change.
For some it means facing a
potentially overwhelming task of
sorting through up to six decades of
accumulated, treasured belongings
and memories in the family home.
Alan Wood of Ryman Healthcare
says residents at Ryman Healthcare
villages, including Charles Upham
village in Rangiora, have been given
advice dealing with items that can
trigger happy memories, or remain
useful for their future lives.
Wellingtonbased decluttering and
moving service TaskMasters, owned
by Judy Thorpe, says she and coowner,
Jane van der Wilt, give
practical advice to potential
residents of retirement villages.
TheTaskMasters team help people
hone in on the precious memories
and associations that certain items
might prompt, and also talk aboutthe
practical side to adecluttering.
She says picking out items from a
lifetime, can be difficult, but can be
treated abit like ahighlights reel,
from the decades or chapters of welllived
lives.
‘‘As people get older they tend to
have less control over their lives, for
whatever reason, health issues being
acommon one.
‘‘So, it’s really, really important
they have some control over what is
happening.
‘‘We work with them to help them
decide what they need to declutter
and what they can actually take to
their new residence.
‘‘It’s sort of interesting.
‘‘Often we might say the samething
to them that their families have said
but because we’re an objective third
party, who has no vested interest or
emotional attachment... they’ll listen
to us.’’
Feeling they are in control of the
process, dealing with treasures from
their long wellled lives helps most
people declutter.
Even knick knacks that might not
appeal to others or are not really
useful to an outsider might be
precious to someone who has lived
through hard times.
‘‘These (items) are core to who they
are, and our view is they should
surround themselves with things that
make them happy.’’
It is also important to this
‘downsizing’ age group that items
they are letting go of, go to someone
else, or are at least recycled. They
have loved them once and now it’s
time to pass them to someone else to
love them.
‘‘The main focus is to encourage
them to actually start and do some
decluttering themselves to take the
pressure off their shoulders when
they have time, rather than when
they have to move when it is so much
more stressful.
‘‘When we do jobs we don’t just go
in and tell them to get rid of their
treasures.’’
Support is available
Having aquality of life is important at
people’s independence.
Many wish to stay in their own homes
as long as possible, and this should be
supported.
‘‘While an older person still has
mental capacity, they have the right to
make decisions about their lives, even
if we don’t agree with them.
‘‘It is our job to listen and to support,
and this may mean we sometimes have
An Adriel Sparkle
from Us to You
Adriel House and Rest Home
residents are adding alittle sparkle
to the Amberley community.
Asharing shed —ASparkle from Us
to You —now sits proudly at the front
of Adriel’s driveway, providing
goodies and produce Adriel residents
have made, grown or picked.
Adriel’s owner Mischeal
McCormick says there is going to be a
wee opening ceremony with the
residents.
She hopes the sharing shed will be
agreat activity for residents to
provide the community with
everything from eggs the home’s
chooks lay, veges from its gardens
which residents help look after, jams
and preserves, and things they make
during activity time.
‘‘It will be the resident’s
responsibility every morning and
every night to fill the shed, and close
it down at night, providing them with
apurpose and aray of sunshine and
spark,’’ Mischeal says.
‘‘Staff are coming up with all sorts
of ideas for the shed.’’
She says the home is well supported
by the community.
‘‘It is nice to build community
connections, be part of the
community, and to give something
back,’’ she says.
Mischeal says residents have been
enjoying the warmer weather, and a
wee spa in the shade of atree.
‘‘They have also been out and about
to beaches and for picnics.’’
The home, which provides care for
those living with dementia, bases its
care on the Spark of Life programme
which focuses on quality of
connection between carers and
residents, and their families.
Mischeal says the Spark of Life
resonates with many who came to
Adriel because the programme
appealed to them.
Adriel has full occupancy, and a
number of new staff, says Mischeal.
It aims this year to continue
connecting with the community, and
to get residents out and about. Some
went to local churches who were very
supportive, and there were often
invites for residents to visit local
gardens.
WIL looks to future
By GINA MCKENZIE
The opportunity to spend more time
on farm, while providing adedicated
service for shareholders, attracted
new environmental manager Ben
Howden to work for Waimakariri
Irrigation Limited (WIL).
Ben is the first fulltime internal
environmental manager to work for
the cooperative, and he says this
demonstrates the importance WIL
places on assisting shareholders to
meet their environmental
requirements while also responding
to current and future environmental
challenges.
‘‘Spending more time out on farm
with shareholders while also
considering what the future holds
really appeals to me.
‘‘I am keen to get to know our
shareholders and find out how Ican
help them to achieve their
environmental goals,’’ he says.
Growing up on his family’s farm
near Ashburton, Ben understands
what it takes to operate asuccessful
farm on apractical level.
After high school, he attended
Canterbury University where he
gained amasters degree in
environmental science before starting
his career as an environmental
analyst with Rangitata Dairies in
South Canterbury.
While working for Rangitata
Dairies, Ben focused on providing onfarm
and consent support for the
company'sfarming operations.
Ben then moved to Irricon where he
spent five years working as an
environmental consultant with afocus
on consents and auditing during the
time when Farm Environment Plans
(FEPs) became arequirement for
farmers.
‘‘A year after Istarted at Irricon,
Environment Canterbury launched
their FEP auditing programme, so I
provided practical advice to farmers
and carried out audits.
‘‘There was alot to learn during this
period for both consultants and
farmers.’’
In 2021, Ben took up aprincipal
consultant role with Ravensdown
where he led ateam of consultants
based in midCanterbury to support
farmers in meeting their regulatory
requirements and environmental
goals.
‘‘I enjoyed leading ateam and had
the opportunity to work in alarge
organisation where Icould gain alot
of experience and learn new skills.
‘‘After afew years Iwanted to spend
more time out on farm again and being
able to work closely with farmers is
what attracted me to the role with
WIL.’’
New environmental manager ... Ben
Howden is keen to visit shareholders and
learn more about their farming
operations.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Ben sees challenges and
opportunities ahead for WIL’s
shareholders and is looking forward to
helping them navigate options for a
sustainable farming future.
‘‘Obviously we have challenges in
terms of regulation and climate
change, but we also have plenty of
opportunities including technology
and efficiency gains.
‘‘The irrigation scheme also has an
opportunity as acooperative to
secure amore sustainable and
reliable water supply.’’
Along with building strong
relationships with WIL’s shareholders
and familiarising himself with the
irrigation scheme, Ben will be
supporting the preparation of WIL’s
discharge consent renewal during the
first few months of his new role.
When Ben isn’t out on farm, he will
be based in WIL’s new office which is
located upstairs in Conway Lane in
Rangiora.
He is happy to visit shareholders on
farm and they are also welcome to
visit him at his office.
‘‘I am pretty down to earth and
approachable, so Ihope shareholders
will give me acall, and Iwill do my
best to support them to achieve their
environmental goals.
In his free time, Ben enjoys sport
and the outdoors, and shares his love
of nature with his young family. They
live in Darfield.
‘‘I love diving, fishing, hunting and
cricket. Going away camping is
another activity we enjoy doing as a
family. We like to be outside doing
stuff whenever possible.’’
Asweet fundraiser
After aslow start to the growing season,
Rotherham School’s popular sweetcorn
fundraiser is up and running again.
The cobs are on sale for $5 for five cobs,
outside the school gates in Rotherham.
The proceeds will go towards employing a
third teacher.
School Parent Teacher Association
(PTA) president Tash Thomas says the
corn will also be for sale at Hanmer
Springs markets and the Amuri A&P show
over next few of weeks.
Grown on aone third of ahectare block
donated by owner Ross Beavens, the
seeds were sown last November by
Rotherhambased contractor Flintoft
Contractors Ltd.
The Madison Gold seed was supplied by
Pioneer Brand Products through Paige
Farrell the area manager.
Mrs Thomas and the school’s PTA
members has been working long hours
picking cobs.
‘‘After aworrying couple of late frosts
early in December after it had been
sowed, and slow growth in January, plus
water restrictions, we were beginning to
worry whether we would have agood
season or not. But the weather here has
improved and they have shot away.
‘‘They are looking great and we are all
relieved.’’
It is expected to take three weeks to
pick all the corn and Tash says it will be
tight to gather enough in time for the the
Amuri Show on March 2—provided the
weather is kind.
The PTA is extremely grateful for all the
help they get each year from the parents
of children at the school to help pick the
cobs.
Last year the school sold 9000 cobs of
corn raising arecord $9500 for the school.
The small rural school has agrowing
roll of 42 children with 14 new entrants
starting this year.
community…
Mayors farewell failed Three Waters
Mayors from across New Zealand welcomed the
repeal of Three Waters.
Members of Communities 4Local Democracy He
Hapori mō te Manapori (C4LD) were in Wellington
last week to celebrate the legislation torepeal
Three Waters being introduced toparliament.
Co-chairs Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon
and Manawatu Mayor Helen Worboys were
in the Speaker's gallery last week to hear the
introduction of the repeal bill.
Mayor Dan Gordon says the member councils were
thrilled the new Government had delivered on their
campaign promise to repeal the unpopular reform.
“The coalition Government all campaigned on
repealing Three Waters, and they were elected on
amandate that opposed centralisation and the
forced removal of community water assets.
“C4LD put forward acommunity-led, common
sense alternative for water reform that sees higher
standards delivered throughout the country while
making sure local communities have control and
say over their assets. We welcome working with
the new Government on this model.”
As part of its advocacy work, C4LD developed a
detailed alternative plan for reform that would
deliver the necessary infrastructure investment
while respecting community property rights.
Sound of Thunder calls
The Sound of Thunder roars into
life at Ruapuna this weekend.
160 racers from multiple
countries will line up to compete
and for Cust engineer and avid
racer Gary Cotterell it’s an event
he looks forward to each year.
‘‘I’ve entered many times over
the years and Ithoroughly enjoy it
as we are all racing on similar
machinery, so it comes down to
how well you prepare your bike
and how well you ride on the
day.’’
