Sound of Thunder calls<br />

The Sound of Thunder roars into<br />
life at Ruapuna this weekend.<br />
160 racers from multiple<br />
countries will line up to compete<br />
and for Cust engineer and avid<br />
racer Gary Cotterell it’s an event<br />
he looks forward to each year.<br />
‘‘I’ve entered many times over<br />
the years and Ithoroughly enjoy it<br />
as we are all racing on similar<br />
machinery, so it comes down to<br />
how well you prepare your bike<br />
and how well you ride on the<br />
day.’’<br />
The Sound of Thunder (SOT) is<br />
an annual race meeting for<br />

‘‘All Ihave to do is change the<br />
tires and I’ll be ready ,’’ he said.<br />
But changing tires isn’t as easy<br />
as it used to be for Gary as the tire<br />
manufacturer Avon has stopped<br />
production of the specific sized<br />
tire he uses on his bikes.<br />
‘‘The problem is it has became<br />
too expensive to make alimited<br />
run for classic enthusiasts and<br />
racers like me, so now I’ll have to<br />

impressed, especially as it was<br />
pouring down, but having raced in<br />
the rain many times before on my<br />
MotoX bike Ididn’t know<br />
anything different, and anyway I<br />

Classic cars<br />
Amberley Menz shed are holding aclassic vehicles display on Sunday, <strong>February</strong> 25, at the Better Half kitchen<br />
and Bar on the corner of Ashworths Beach Road and SH1, Leithfield. All veterans, vintage and classic vehicles<br />
are most welcome. Free entry for the public and display vehicles. Donation to the Amberley Menz Shed would<br />
be welcomed. Open from 9amto1pm. Food and drinks available all day.<br />
Kitty Kingdom<br />
Rangiora cat rescue group Kitty Kingdom is holding its annual garage sale fundraiser this Saturday, on<br />
<strong>February</strong> 24, in the McAlpines Pipe Band Hall in the New World Supermarket car park. Organiser Tina Hartley<br />
says the group needs to raise money to help them through kitten season. ``Kitten season is astruggle and we<br />
desperately need to keep the fundraising going,'' she says. Donations for the sale include household items,<br />
clothing, jewellery, toys, sports equipment,camping equipment, plants, baking and Steadfast Books in Woolston<br />
has donated hundreds of books. The sale will begin at 9am and close at 3pm.<br />
Marathon swim<br />
Swimming for 24 hours is aspecial project for Amberley Volunteer Fire Brigade's firefighters to help young<br />
people in their community. In partnership with IAmHope, they will swim continuously for aday to raise money<br />
and awareness for the cause. Starting at noon on Saturday, <strong>February</strong> 24, at Amberley’s MainPower Pool, teams<br />
of volunteer firefighters will swim in relay over the following 24 hours.Come down and cheer them on as they<br />
raise funds for the youth in their community.
