Sound of Thunder calls

The Sound of Thunder roars into
life at Ruapuna this weekend.
160 racers from multiple
countries will line up to compete
and for Cust engineer and avid
racer Gary Cotterell it’s an event
he looks forward to each year.
‘‘I’ve entered many times over
the years and Ithoroughly enjoy it
as we are all racing on similar
machinery, so it comes down to
how well you prepare your bike
and how well you ride on the
day.’’
The Sound of Thunder (SOT) is
an annual race meeting for

‘‘All Ihave to do is change the
tires and I’ll be ready ,’’ he said.
But changing tires isn’t as easy
as it used to be for Gary as the tire
manufacturer Avon has stopped
production of the specific sized
tire he uses on his bikes.
‘‘The problem is it has became
too expensive to make alimited
run for classic enthusiasts and
racers like me, so now I’ll have to

The well­known Cust based
mechanical and aviation
engineer says at 66 he hopes to be
riding for as long as his father did.
‘‘Dad was riding into his 90’s
and I’ve been doing it sinceIwas
small.’’
He started in MotoX as alad in
England before taking up road
racing.
‘‘I entered my first road race at
Mallory Park and mum wasn’t
impressed, especially as it was
pouring down, but having raced in
the rain many times before on my
MotoX bike Ididn’t know
anything different, and anyway I
came second so Iwas happy.’’

Classic cars
Amberley Menz shed are holding aclassic vehicles display on Sunday, February 25, at the Better Half kitchen
and Bar on the corner of Ashworths Beach Road and SH­1, Leithfield. All veterans, vintage and classic vehicles
are most welcome. Free entry for the public and display vehicles. Donation to the Amberley Menz Shed would
be welcomed. Open from 9amto1pm. Food and drinks available all day.
Kitty Kingdom
Rangiora cat rescue group Kitty Kingdom is holding its annual garage sale fundraiser this Saturday, on
February 24, in the McAlpines Pipe Band Hall in the New World Supermarket car park. Organiser Tina Hartley
says the group needs to raise money to help them through kitten season. ``Kitten season is astruggle and we
desperately need to keep the fundraising going,'' she says. Donations for the sale include household items,
clothing, jewellery, toys, sports equipment,camping equipment, plants, baking and Steadfast Books in Woolston
has donated hundreds of books. The sale will begin at 9am and close at 3pm.
Marathon swim
Swimming for 24 hours is aspecial project for Amberley Volunteer Fire Brigade's firefighters to help young
people in their community. In partnership with IAmHope, they will swim continuously for aday to raise money
and awareness for the cause. Starting at noon on Saturday, February 24, at Amberley’s MainPower Pool, teams
of volunteer firefighters will swim in relay over the following 24 hours.Come down and cheer them on as they
raise funds for the youth in their community.
