Age Concern Canterbury can help listen and support older persons. PHOTO: FILE Support is available as challenges arise Having aquality of life is important at any age, but as you get older it can become more of achallenge. Whether you are looking to retain your independence, or you have elderly parents you are concerned about, support is available. Age Concern Canterbury chief executive Greta Bond says the first port of call should be aGP, who can refer to Te Whatu Ora Older Person’s Health Specialist Services. ‘‘There are also anumber of services available that can support older people’s independence. Many wish to stay in their own homes as long as possible, and this should be supported. ‘‘While an older person still has mental capacity, they have the right to make decisions about their lives, even if we don’t agree with them. ‘‘It is our job to listen and to support, and this may mean we sometimes have to live with abit of uncertainty and worry.’’ Age Concern provides community health support services, socialoutings, avisitor service, safer driving courses and other education, and can recommend home support service providers. Total Mobility cards can be issued and an Elder Abuse Response Service is available, while community connectors can advocate for older people in dealing with WINZ, utilities companies, attending GP visits and navigating the health system. Eldernet.co.nz provides information about support for older people and has produced abooklet called Where from here: Essential information for older people. Presbyterian Support Upper South Island Enliven service manager Vicki Lucas says services include the Rangiora Totara Club day programme, which is aimed at people living in their own home. Strength and balance exercises are taught to prevent falls. New services include the Dementia Matewareware Younger onset group for those aged under65 with dementia. Anew Pōua Group works alongside Kaiāwhina group, with male Kaumātua going out into the community. In Kaiapoi, seniors can enjoy aday out in the company of the Darnley Club. CAB North Canterbury has trained volunteers with information at their fingertips about applying for Superannuation or Veteran’s Pensions, wills and powers of attorney, how to get photo ID, transport services and the various support agencies. The Ministry for Social Development has produced a Services for Seniors brochure, which provides information about what benefits or payments and services you may be entitled to. Volunteers will call someone who is socially isolated for afriendly chat. Organisations like Hato Hone St John, Presbyterian Support, Kaiapoi Community Support and the Oxford Community Trust can also help. They can offer transport services to enable people to do their shopping or get to appointmentsat hospitals, the doctor or other specialists. An Adriel Sparkle from Us to You Adriel House and Rest Home residents are adding alittle sparkle to the Amberley community. Asharing shed —ASparkle from Us to You —now sits proudly at the front of Adriel’s driveway, providing goodies and produce Adriel residents have made, grown or picked. Adriel’s owner Mischeal McCormick says there is going to be a wee opening ceremony with the residents. She hopes the sharing shed will be agreat activity for residents to provide the community with everything from eggs the home’s chooks lay, veges from its gardens which residents help look after, jams and preserves, and things they make during activity time. ‘‘It will be the resident’s responsibility every morning and every night to fill the shed, and close it down at night, providing them with apurpose and aray of sunshine and spark,’’ Mischeal says. ‘‘Staff are coming up with all sorts of ideas for the shed.’’ She says the home is well supported by the community. ‘‘It is nice to build community connections, be part of the community, and to give something back,’’ she says. Mischeal says residents have been enjoying the warmer weather, and a wee spa in the shade of atree. ‘‘They have also been out and about to beaches and for picnics.’’ The home, which provides care for those living with dementia, bases its care on the Spark of Life programme which focuses on quality of connection between carers and residents, and their families. Mischeal says the Spark of Life resonates with many who came to Adriel because the programme appealed to them. Adriel has full occupancy, and a number of new staff, says Mischeal. It aims this year to continue connecting with the community, and to get residents out and about. Some went to local churches who were very supportive, and there were often invites for residents to visit local gardens.
