We realize thecost of education can be a deterrent for many of these students and we hope thecreation of an endowment for scholarships will be able to provide a consistentsource of funds and help remove that obstacle.” - Robert and Molly SchulzeIn partnership with Robert and Molly Schulzeand San Diego Foundation, BLCI is pleased toannounce two new matching fund opportunitiesfor a total of $150,000 that are aimed at increasingequity in education by assisting low-income, firstgenerationstudents with financial support to ensureacademic persistence and success. BLCI partners76 GBSAN.COM | MARCH 2024with San Diego Foundationeach year through theirCommunity ScholarshipsProgram, which is the largestnon-university scholarship provider in San DiegoCounty and responsible for awarding $4 million inscholarships to over 1,000 students, including BLCIalumni, last year. The existing partnership and SanDiego Foundations’ dedication to the communitymade them a natural partner for these newlyestablished funds.
BLCI Graduating Class of 2023Robert and Molly’sinvolvement began with aninvitation to attend BLCI’sannual event, Opportunityfor Impact and in Robert’swords, “after that night wewere hooked.” The event ishosted by BLCI students andhighlights their educationalgoals and what they haveBLCI Elementary Studens”Acknowledge your goodfortune, your hard workand achievements to date,and be willing to give backwhen you have the timeand treasure to do so.”learned in the program. Molly was struck by the confidence the studentsexhibited and attributed it to the skills they learned at BLCI, “I believe thatBLCI instills and reinforces confidence. It was incredibly impressive. Bothof us believe in the power of education and realize that because of financesit is unattainable for many. We feel extremely fortunate to be able to helpand we hope the challenge grant will encourage others to join us in thiseffort to make higher education more easily attainable for others.”Like BLCI students, Robert was the first in his family to graduate college andhis path to education was not an easy one. Robert’s first scholarship came in theform of aid from the Catholic Church after his father died, leaving his motherto raise four young boys all under the age of 10. His mother began working inthe church’s school cafeteria,and the boys attended schoolfor free. Further assistanceenabled a spot at an all-boyscatholic military schoolwhich was followed bycollege funded through theGI Bill for his service duringthe Vietnam era. Robertshares that his educationwould not have been possiblewithout help along the wayand now it is his time to giveback, “I am one lucky person.Advice to others would beto acknowledge your goodfortune, your hard work andachievements to date, and bewilling to give back when youhave the time and treasure todo so.”Since that first event, Robertand Molly have provided15 four-year scholarshipsto BLCI students, changingthe trajectory of lives forgenerations to come.
