THIS IS what is left of a
townhouse in Shirley which
left three people injured – one
seriously – and a child passed out
of a top floor window to safety.
Four fire appliances raced to
fight the blaze about 10pm on
Tuesday on New Brighton Rd,
opposite The Palms shopping
centre.
Said a witness: “The mum
passed the child out the top
window and two boys from
the street were underneath and
caught her.”
Afterwards, the mother
climbed through the top window
and dropped to the ground.
A neighbour, two doors down
from the property, heard a large
boom and what sounded like an
earthquake.
“My partner said, ‘It’s an
earthquake, it’s an earthquake,’
and we could definitely smell
the smoke,” he said.

in South Hagley Park is under
way to improve its poor
condition.
The spring-fed brook passes
through heavy industrial land
before winding its way through
South Hagley Park and flowing
into the Ōtākaro-Avon River
near the Botanic Gardens.
It has suffered from slumping
banks, exposed tree roots and
trees in inappropriate places,
including within the brook itself.
The work will also improve
the biodiversity and health
of the waterway, enhance the
landscape and restore drainage
capacity. There have also been
concerns about the safety of an
open drainage channel with
steep banks in an area with
high pedestrian and cycle use.
It’s expected the work encompassing
the area north of
the netball courts and past the
cricket fields to Riccarton Ave
will take about nine months

collect valuables, including her
passport.
“We evacuated as soon as we
could. The fire brigade was here
very quickly, and so was St John.”
The man said the young child
was rescued from the top of
the property’s window and he
thought it might have been one
of the parents and a bystander
who saved the child from the
blaze.
“Whoever it was, they are a
hero, as they couldn’t go down
because the fire was raging,” he

The neighbour said he didn’t
know the residents who lived in
the property as they had moved

It treated three patients, one

in court over alleged
indecent messages
A police officer who allegedly
sent sexually explicit messages
to an underage girl on social
media platform Instagram
will appear in court in May.
Court documents allege the
Christchurch man, who is aged
in his mid-40s, committed the
offences between February 5
and February 26, 2023. He faces
two charges of being a person of
or over the age of 16 years who
intentionally exposed a young
person under the age of 16 years
to indecent material, namely
sexually explicit messages via the
Instagram messaging app. Police
said the man was no longer a
police employee and police were
unable to comment further.
Four new rescue
helicopters purchased
Christchurch-based GCH
Aviation Garden City Helicopters
has purchased four Airbus H145
air rescue helicopters from
Switzerland to standardise and
upgrade its South Island fleet.
A multi-million dollar deal has
the helicopters switch from Rega
Swiss Air-Rescue to complement
the H145 (Westpac Rescue
Helicopter) already based in
Christchurch. Rescue helicopters
are also based on the West Coast
and in Nelson/Marlborough.
The helicopters will be delivered
next year and start becoming
operational from late 2025.
Motorcyclist dies after
Ruapuna crash
A male motorcyclist has died
following a crash at Euromarque
Motorsport Park – Ruapuna
during the Sound of Thunder
meet on Saturday. Emergency
services were called to the venue
west of Christchurch just before
3pm after two motorcyclists
crashed. Police yesterday
confirmed one rider had died.
No further details were released,
including the condition of the

Delegation kept out
of Ecogas facility in
$11k mission; trip
still worthy

THE CITY council spent
$11,000 for a fact-finding mission
to two North Island organics
facilities – but those on the trip
couldn’t look inside the key one,
or take photos.
The trip was to see firsthand
what Ecogas’ new South Hornby
plant, which will replace the controversial
Bromley open-air organics
composting site, could look
like and how it would operate.
It came after concerns from
South Hornby residents they
were inheriting the smelly Bromley
problem.
The group of 16 on the trip was
made up of Hornby, Templeton
and Prebbleton residents’ association
representatives, city
councillors, community board
members and senior city council
managers.
The group returned saying there
would be no issues with smell.
But The Star can reveal those
on the trip were told by the city
council before they left they
would not be able to go inside
the processing plant at Reporoa,
near Rotorua. They were able to
look inside Ecogas’ sorting and
consolidating plant at Papakura
in Auckland.
Instead, the group viewed live
camera feeds from outside the
Reporoa facility.

Marc Duff said
he was not concerned.
“Ecogas has
spent a lot of
money on its new Marc Duff
technology so I understand why
we weren’t allowed was due to
commercial sensitivity. I don’t
think there is anything underhand
going on,” he said.

on the trip, said the council was
aware of the request
not to take
photos and that
the group would
not be able to go
inside Reporoa
facility before
organising the
trip.
“The two

privately-owned commercial
facilities and any images

priority, so visitors were allowed
to take photos/videos in areas
where it was appropriate and safe
to do so.
“The only restricted access
was inside the reception hall.
The council delegation was able
to observe the site layout, traffic
movements, bio scrubber (which
cleans the air), the anaerobic
digestion tanks, pasteuriser and
infrastructure for gas capture
and utilisation.”
GHRA chair Derek Phelps said
green waste and processed waste
was contained in tanks on the
plant sites.
When the doors were open at
the Reporoa site, there were a few
odours, Phelps said.
“But, once we were outside the
boundary, there were fewer smells
and a few hundred metres away,
there was absolutely nothing.”
Duff said they spoke to
businesses and residents near the
Reporoa facility.
“We spoke to nearby businesses
and residents who confirmed they
had similar worries about the
odour which have not come to
fruition,” he said.
Halswell Community Board
member Debbie Mora said she
has a much better understanding
of Ecogas’ operations because of
the trip.
The GRHA held a meeting on
Sunday to give residents feedback
on the trip, where a new issue
emerged – traffic.
Said Duff: “It’s really time to
have a look at the whole Hornby
roading system. It’s been a build
up slowly since the earthquake
as we’ve seen more people move
into the area, and more heavy
transport.”

CAPTAIN JAMES Cook’s statue
in Victoria Square will bear the
marks of a costly Valentine’s
Day vandalism attack for at least
another three months.
Although his nose was swiftly
repaired after a grinder was
used to deface the statue of the
English explorer, the red cross
smeared on his front is not
such a straightforward fix as
city council-funded restoration
worth up to $25,000 continues.
The paint has faded but it is
harder to eradicate from marble
than the granite base, which was
also targeted with anti-colonial
slogans on February 14, the
anniversary of Cook’s death in
Hawaii in 1779.
A CCTV camera positioned
behind Cook did not reveal any
images of the attack because it
only covers the vicinity of the
statue. Re-angling the camera may
feature in a revamp of security.
The work of a heritage conservator
and the weather will now
be relied upon to bring Cook
back to his original state after the
third incident coinciding with
the anniversary following 2019
and 2022.
“On heritage advice and
previous experience, now the
binder (resin) has been removed
from the red paint, these
pigments will continue to fade
over the next three months,” said
city council acting head of parks,
Rupert Bool.
“The process is designed to
cause the least amount of damage
to the statue.”
Waipapa Papanui-Innes-
Central Community Board
member John Miller called for a
guard to be on site for next year’s
anniversary as a deterrent for
another attack.
Bool would not comment
on that likelihood, but said
additional security measures
were being considered.
The repair bill for the damage
is expected to cost between
$15,000 to $25,000, a figure
covering security, scaffolding,
staff labour, materials and remedial
work undertaken by the
conservator.

comes after the toppling of
another Cook statue outside the
Cook’s Cottage historic site in
Melbourne on Monday – the
third such attack on a Cook
memorial in the city this year.

Teenagers
sentenced
for assaults
on gay men
FIVE TEENAGERS have
been sentenced for a series of
unprovoked attacks on gay men
in Christchurch last year, which
involved the youths filming the
assaults.
They received six months
supervision and were ordered to
pay reparations by Judge Quentin
Hix when appearing in the Youth
Court yesterday.
Prosecutor Penny Brown described
the 10 incidents as “highly
premeditated and extremely
violent” and argued three of the
six offenders should be dealt with
in the district court based on the
serious nature of their offending.
The trio includes one youth
whose case continues in April.
In one video played in the court,
the audio picks up someone telling
a victim who had beaten unconscious:
“Yeah, f***ing go to sleep.”
Brown argued the perpetrators
would not receive adequate
psychological and rehabilitation
through the youth justice system.
However, Judge Hix disagreed,
saying jail – a likelihood should
they be transferred to the district
court – could lead the youths
down a more violent path.

Residents say they will
ignore SailGP road closure

RESIDENTS WHO use
Governors Bay Rd say they
will drive through a road block
during SailGP, rather than take a
significant detour to reach their
homes.
One resident who lives near
Sandy Bay, off Governors Bay Rd,
said she will ignore attempts to
stop her passage.
“Oh blow them, they’ve got no
right to stop me,” she said.
She and other residents who
intend to ignore the closure live
on the eastern side of Governors
Bay, close to the Dyers Pass Rd
turn-off where the road block
will be located.
SailGP told residents in a letter
they would, like last year, need
to detour through Lyttelton
and drive the long way along
Governors Bay Rd to reach their
homes.
Governors Bay Rd will become
a one-way road allowing all
vehicles to travel only from Lyttelton
between noon and 6pm on
March 23 and 24.
This is the route the affected
residents will need to take to
reach eastern Governors Bay
after using passes to access a
detour into Lyttelton via Bridle
Path Rd and Tunnel Rd.
SailGP said the road closure
was “designed to manage the
flow of traffic, parking, emergency
access, resident access
and transport options for ticket
holders”.
Resident David Gregory also
said he is likely to ignore the
closure.
“It seems illogical to allow
access to your home from one
direction, but not from the other
direction,” he said.
“The purpose of this seems
obscure.”
Governors Bay Rd resident
Vix-Creag McCulloch said it
was frustrating last year not
being able to access their homes
from both directions, despite
having passes.
She said it was bad event management
for residents who lived
on the closed part of Governors
Bay Rd.
“To be able to show the traffic
wardens your pass, your rates
notice and point to your house
and then told to find a park and
walk there was very infuriating,
especially with a damaged knee.”
Responding to residents views,
a SailGP spokesperson said:
“We’d ask all residents to be
mindful of the safety of all road
users, including these emergency
services personnel, when travelling
during race weekend.”
The spokesperson said the road
closure was part of the SailGP
traffic management plan, developed
in partnership with the city
council, Ministry of Transport,
and a “range of experts and the
local community.”
SailGP told affected residents
they would be mailed a pass allowing
access from Lyttelton in
early March.
Lyttelton residents will also
be blocked from entering the
suburb through Sumner and
Governors Bay and only allowed
access through Tunnel Rd and
Bridle Path Rd with passes.

Students
light fires
inside school

AVONSIDE GIRLS’ High was
evacuated on Tuesday afternoon
when students deliberately lit two
fires inside a building.
The fire alarm rang out at the
school at 1.15pm after smoke
from the fires set off the sprinkler
system.
“Two fires were lit in two waste
paper bins in two different toilets,
within about five minutes of
each other,” principal Catherine
Law said.
All students were evacuated
safely, along with two co-located
schools, she said.
Classes were cancelled for
the rest of the day, with pupils
escorted back in small groups to
retrieve their belongings.
“Our school evacuated, along
with [Shirley Boys’ High School]
and of course Ferndale School
who have special needs students.
So the consequences are potentially
very, very serious.”
A very serious message needed
to be sent to students that there
was nothing funny about lighting
fires, Law said.
“I need every single student in
our school to know that it’s not
fun, it’s not a joke, that’s not a
funny thing to do - it put a lot of

Veteran car set for sedate tribute run

GEORGE LEE is obviously
no boy racer, but the 76-yearold’s
wheels will turn heads
sedately when Vintage Car
Club Canterbury pays homage
to the world’s longest-running
motoring event.
The retired motor trimmer/upholsterer
owns the oldest motor
entered in Saturday’s inaugural
Brooklands to Brighton Run,
which is modelled on the enduring
London to Brighton Veteran
Car Run and restricted to vehicles
at least a century old.
Lee spent 30 years basically
rebuilding a 1904 Alldays &
Onions single cylinder eight
horsepower four-seater from
scratch, a true labour of love he
had to be railroaded into.
Having restored the interiors
of hundreds of vintage and
classic cars since starting his
apprenticeship at Riccarton bus
builder GB McWhinnie in the
1960s, Lee needed badgering into
buying the motor and gearbox in
Greymouth.
“I thought I work on old cars
all the time, why do I want a
hobby on what I’m working on?”
asked Lee, who then justified
why he relented in 1992.
“It grows on you, it’s a rust disease.
If it’s rusty we’ve got to pick
it up and have a look at it.”
Alldays & Onions’ obscurity
helped because Lee wasn’t
interested in restoring a stockstandard
Model T Ford. The
Birmingham-based English automobile
manufacturer operated
between 1898 and 1918.
Once he returned from the
West Coast, Lee sourced an
Alldays & Onions differential in
Palmerston North plus a chassis
from Loburn.
While his veteran – cars
produced before 1918 earn that
designation; vintage were made
between 1919-1930 – is almost
entirely faithful to an original,
there is one modern concession.
“There is a crank at the front
but I’ve got a Japanese starter
motor because I’ve hurt my back
a few times,” Lee admitted.
“The thing is a lot of these cars
never get on the road because the

people who own them are old
and they can’t crank (start) them.
You have to be pretty strong.”
Sporting a canary yellow paint
job for maximum visibility, Lee
spent untold thousands of hours
toiling to make the rare machine
roadworthy two years ago,
though it was not an expensive
exercise.
“It’s cost bugger all really because
I’ve done it all myself,” said
Lee, who was looking forward to
the Run after a recent tune-up
jaunt to Geraldine.
“It’s something free for the
public and the kids love it,” he
said.
The London to Brighton
Veteran Car Run was first held as
the Emancipation Run in 1896,
with emancipation referring to
the repeal of the law requiring
all motor vehicles to be preceded
by a man walking with a red
warning flag.
It was revived and rebranded

in 1927, restricted to vehicles
built before 1905, and has subsequently
been held annually with
two exceptions: the duration of
World War 2 plus ensuing petrol
rationing until 1947, the Covid-19
pandemic stalled the 2020 edition.
The English version in November
covers 87km and attracts
more than 350 entrants, the local
equivalent will be considerably
shorter.
Around 50 drivers will travel
a maximum of 30km once they
set off from the suburb north of
the city.
The route, which includes
Spencerville, Lower Styx,
Prestons, Burwood, Waimairi
Beach, Marine Parade and
Southshore en route to the final
destination, a car park on Hawke
St, should take about an hour to
complete.
And if they experience mechanical
issues along the way,
there should be a 1919 Nash tow
truck in the vicinity.
The run starts at 10am and
once the vehicles, including
motorcycles, arrive they will be
on display until 2pm.

Hey said members had always
taken a keen interest in the
British event and eventually the
penny dropped.
“We thought, ‘Why don’t we
organise one for Christchurch?
We’ve got a Brighton here,” Hey
said.
The route was designed to keep
potential stoppages to a minimum,
so there is only one set of
traffic lights to negotiate, exiting
Prestons.
“One difficulty with veteran
cars, and especially motorbikes,
is stopping and starting again,”
Hey said.
“Some of the motorbikes don’t
have a clutch, so once the engine
stops the rider has to jump off
and push-start it.
“It’s basically left hand turns
and then one or two intersections
and some roundabouts.
It’s very easy running and there
shouldn’t be too much traffic.”
Hey said the speed was not the
essence, it was an opportunity
to showcase the horsepower of
yesteryear.
“It’s definitely not a race, most
of the cars will do 30 mile an
hour, the really old one’s will do
20-25.”
Each participant receives a
commemorative plaque at the
finish, while there will also be
prizes for the oldest vehicle/
youngest driver combination
plus the best motorcycle, car or
truck chosen by the public who
visit the display.

Highest ever asking price for Chch
home – $9.75 million in Fendalton

CHRISTCHURCH’S highest
ever fixed price for a property
has been tagged onto a luxury
home in Fendalton.
The listing for the large
estate at 8 Wood Lane has been
updated with an asking price
of $9.75 million, which, if sold
at this level, would break the
city’s current $8m record held
by a property on Wairarapa Tce,
Merivale.
The expansive five-bedroom,
five-bathroom property, which
is owned by well-known retired
builder Bill Horncastle and his
wife Mrrietta, first hit the market
in October last year priced by
deadline treaty. It was later
changed to price by negotiation
and now has a fixed price.

“A lot of the times those are
viewing by appointment and
I’d rather have a conversation
with someone opposed to
them making up their own
mind without getting that
opportunity.”
Heazlewood said he would put
a price on a property if there was
“a lot of talk and chat that may
not necessarily paint the right
picture”.
It’s also why a luxury threebedroom,
two-bathroom apartment
in the Riverside Apartments,
Merivale, has a list price
of $2.65m because it had been
previously listed with a different
agency and the price expectation

New owners for historic
buildings after auction

A St Albans resident has
detailed the amount of food
and rubbish left on their
property by a man who has
been warned by police.

TWO HERITAGE-LISTED
colonial era properties on
Cranmer Square have been sold,
and their future appears secure
as an enduring reminder of
yesteryear.
Both properties were auctioned
‘as is where is’ on February
15 and sold for a combined
$900,000.
Although developers were
keen when the wooden dwellings
at 38 and 40 Cranmer Square
were put on the market, interest
waned when made aware of their
protected status with the city
council.
“They soon realised they were
heritage buildings so they’ll
likely be there for a long time,”
said Harcourts Grenadier real
estate agent Jonny Nicholls.
Readily identifiable to those
who drive or walk past the inner
city green space, the two-storey
house at the corner of Cranmer
Square and Kilmore St used to
serve as the unofficial tuckshop
for the adjacent Christchurch
Normal School, a Gothic-style
building demolished after the
2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

plan, the three-bedroom house

in August 2022; the cottage was
listed at $530,000.
If either of the new owners
sought to demolish their
property in future and develop
the site they would require
resource consent from the city
council.
Nicholls said one property was
likely to be rented and the other
owner-occupied “when the time
is right”.
While his recent listings attracted
national and international
attention, Nicholls said these
properties principally piqued
local interest.
“It soon became apparent
someone was going to buy these
out of love and those buyers were
largely locals who had always held
an interest in the properties.”

ANOTHER ST Albans resident
regularly targeted by a man
issued with a trespass notice by
police has detailed the treatment
they endured.
Properties and vehicles on
Mersey St had been pelted with
food and rubbish by the individual
for up to a year before
he was intercepted by police on
February 18.
Quintin Swanepoel, the resident
who alerted police, highlighted
his plight in The Star last
week, revealing foodstuffs were
left on his vehicle repeatedly.
In the latest attack on Valentine’s
Day cream was poured
over the windscreen of his car,
prompting a plan to hide in the
vehicle and film the vandal at
work.
A neighbour, who wanted to
remain anonymous, this week
provided evidence of mince being
left in a letterbox.
“I’ve also had whole packages
of sausages over the fence,
bread, ham, burgers, yoghurt
. . . a whole toastie machine,”
they said via email.
Soft drink cans, unopened
and partially drunk, were left
on the property while residents
also received abusive Christmas
cards.
Police said the man, who
usually walked the street
between 1am and 4am, offered
no explanation for his actions.

Man jailed for abuse of traumatised child

A CHRISTCHURCH man who
admitted he helped to abuse a
preschooler to the point he was
severely emaciated and unable to
walk or speak has been jailed.
The 43-year-old’s offending
was described as “deliberate
and gratuitous”and the court
heard he “blamed” the boy for
the offending and had shown no
remorse.
In November details of the
case were revealed when the
man – who cannot be named to
protect the identity of the young
victim – pleaded guilty to five
charges of assault.
Justice Rachel Dunningham
yesterday sentenced him to two
months’ jail for each of the assaults
on the boy and 14 months
for another assault. The terms
are to be served concurrently.
Given he has spent about seven
months in prison already as
his case progressed through
the courts it is likely he will be
released soon.
Two women are also facing
charges for their alleged abuse
and ill-treatment of the boy. They
have pleaded not guilty and are
due to stand trial later this year.
But the man admitted his role
in the boy’s injuries – which
occurred while he lived with
him and the women a tiny overcrowded
flat.

The abuse came to light in
October 2021 at an Oranga
Tamariki whānau hui, scheduled
to assess the little boy’s welfare.
The man and one of the women
arrived late to the hui and a social
worker spoke with them at their
vehicle.
It was there the worker noticed
the boy had clear injuries and appeared
to be significantly unwell.
An ambulance was called
and the boy was rushed to
Christchurch Hospital.
Alongside being emaciated
and unable to walk or move;
medical staff said he was severely
malnourished and underweight
with thinning hair and wasted
muscles.
He was also traumatised to
the point he was psychologically
shut off and unable to express
any emotion or utter a single
word.
Later it was found the child
had compression fractures to
seven of his vertebrae, several
ribs and his sternum, as well
as burn marks from a cigarette
lighter and bleeding over the
surface of his brain.
Police say that between September
18 and October 7, 2021
the boy only had contact with
the adults in the house.
Court documents state the
boy was made to sleep on a vinyl
floor in the entrance way of the
house with only a folded-up
duvet, a couple of blankets and a
pillow.
After a couple of weeks the
adults became concerned members
of the public might see him
there so he was moved to the
bathtub with urine-soiled blankets
that were allegedly never
washed.
The court heard the boy had
no routine in his life and did not
attend daycare.
He stayed up watching television
into the early hours of the
morning .
He was given little food.
The man admitted assaulting
the boy on multiple occasions,
including forcefully dragging
him by his limbs and smacking
him with force on his buttocks,
causing bruising.
He also admitted that he had
held a lighter to the boy’s foot,
leaving a 2cm burn mark.
Police also alleged the boy was
smacked with force with a jandal
in his genital area by one of the
women in the house, leaving him
with bruising and fractures to
both of his front hip bones.
The boy was also allegedly
pinned to the ground multiple
times by the same woman who
then used her knee and pushed
all her weight against him,
causing significant bruising and
fractures. Both women deny the
offending.

Review could see board chair demoted

CHRISTCHURCH’S longestserving
local government
politician risks demotion in her
final term as discord develops
within a city community board.
Helen Broughton’s tenure as
chair of the Waipuna Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton community
board is under threat, with her
position set to be reviewed by
colleagues, potentially at the next
scheduled meeting on March 14.
Broughton, who has represented
Riccarton on the board
since 1995, was nominated and
appointed unopposed, when the
current board convened for the
first time after the 2022 local
elections.
While the chair is typically
chosen for the three-year duration
of a council term, board
member and Halswell Ward city
councillor Andrei Moore said
there was a verbal agreement
specifying a review after 12
months.
Those discussions were held
before the inaugural meeting
and the review requirement
was never formally recorded,
which Moore conceded was an
oversight.
However, he said the review
should still have already been
conducted.
“We were supposed to have
a review in November but that
item got withdrawn by the

“It wasn’t on the order paper
and I certainly didn’t pull it,” she
said.
Moore said a review was
overdue, citing Broughton’s competency
with social media as a
concern compared to the efforts
of Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central
counterpart Emma Norrish.
“The chair is a really public
facing role, the voice of the community
board if you will. They
play a really key part in public
engagement,” he said.
“We’ve got some chairs who
do really good communications
about community board meetings
and what’s going on at them.
“Emma does a fabulous job,
she’s a classic example of (using)
really effective social media communication
from a chair. That’s
certainly something I’d like to
see from our board as well. It’s
not happening at present.”
Broughton acknowledged
shortcomings with that aspect of
her stewardship.
“Certainly I would have to
pick that up, it was raised at the
beginning,” she said.
“I got so involved in planning
issues that I probably didn’t learn
how to manage Facebook effectively.
I was busy last year and I’d
have to be taught this too.”
Broughton, who retires from
local government politics at the
end of this term, said she was
unaware of any dissatisfaction
with her performance until approached
by The Star.
“I think the board has run very
smoothly, people have been able
to speak. I’ve encouraged the
young ones to speak out so I am
somewhat surprised.”
She hoped to retain the role
after spending the previous two
terms as deputy, and said the
review process was underway.
“I’m comfortable with some
sort of meeting being held, we’re
looking for a facilitator for that.
A process is underway that will
be fair for everybody.”
Moore agreed the process was
being formalised and hoped the
role of chair would be reviewed on
March 14.
Most board members would
not comment on or did not
respond regarding Broughton’s
future.

and competent person who has
a great deal of knowledge about
planning and the way to go
about things. She’s an exceptionally
good person,” he said.
“I think Helen has done, and is
doing, excellent work and I’d hate
to see that stop. Whether she’s the
right person for the chair is a different
story but we need to make
sure we keep that experience
going.”

wEEK NINE: Plan the plan
2 weeks out and it is time to look forward to the
event and start planning the day. The start for
the 12km is at 9am, 6km starts at 9.45am. Are you
planning to roll out of bed at 8am, have a quick
coffee and toast and hurry to the start? Or do
you get up at 6.30am to have a decent breakfast,
leaving you plenty of time for the digestion and
to get ready to arrive at the start in plenty of
time? I suggest that this week on the Wednesday
or Saturday, you actually practice your race day
routine so it is familiar to you on the day. You won’t
know what the weather will be like until a couple of
days before so don’t worry about that now, just be
prepared for every weather condition.

This is Christchurch autumn with all its
unpredictable weather patterns from a warm
nor’west day, to snow! So find some gloves, a
hat, a polypropylene top and a jacket in case you
need these. And don’t forget the sunscreen. Your
training this week is still solid with the last long
run on the Wednesday as the taper to freshen up
the legs starts in the weekend. If you feel a bit
underdone don’t fall into the trap of doing “catch
up training”. That is putting in some extra sessions
or going a bit longer and harder than indicated.
You take a risk of injury or excessive tiredness and
it is too late to have much of an effect anyway, so
relax and stick to your plan!

To achieve this goal you need to
develop some awareness around the
basic requirements of exercising for
health and fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To improve your
level of health and fitness you will need to
aim for 4 sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions
per week will only maintain what you have
and 1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally build
towards between 30 and 50 minutes with
one longer session of 60-120 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.

written as a guide only. If you are concerned about
your health at any stage please undergo a health
check with your GP.
TIP OF ThE wEEK
A normal breakfast before you take part
in an endurance event is taken 2-3 hours
before the event. It should consist mainly
of slow release carbohydrates, also called
foods with a low glycaemic index.
Low GI foods include oatmeal (rolled oats),
skim milk, most fruits (except grapes,
watermelon and banana’s), nuts and whole
meal bread. In the 2 hours before the event
you don’t need much. You can sip on a
sports drink or have a banana if you feel
hungry but you don’t want to start with a
full tummy and the right breakfast will keep
you going till the finish.

Last Thursday was
the 13th anniversary
of the devastating 6.3
magnitude February
2011 earthquake. We
asked starnews.co.nz
Facebook users where
they were when it struck
Susan Grant: At home, was
talking to my son on the phone
when earthquake hit. My house
was unstable from the September
quake, the February quake
finished it off. We were later red
zoned. My thoughts on this day
are for the ones who lost their
lives.
Margaret Gamblin: I was
at home when the earthquake
hit, it was my day off. My home
stood up, but unfortunately
where I worked didn’t. I worked
at Canterbury Spinners Ltd
in Maces Rd, it was one of the
biggest employers of the Eastside
– still miss working there.
Nikki Miller: In Rangiora, my
grandma was staying from the
North Island (she was painting
my garage window). Hubby had
just called home on his lunch
break. I was a caregiver/support
worker at the time, so worked
through with my clients. I had
so much anxiety (still do) about
leaving home.
Stephen Taylor: I was home

Dunsandel. All of a sudden the
radio went out. When they came
back on air they said they had
just had an earthquake. It will be
a day I will never forget, just like
the one in September.
Kyle Croton: I was in Hagley
Park, helping delivering plywood
for the flower show, 3 news
were there filming, they got the
footage while it was happening.
Two minutes after we arrived,
everything shook. The truck
was going crazy, you could
see nearby buildings falling,
screaming, and water coming
out in the park. After it finished
we left, took us four hours to go
home. Traffic was at a standstill,
from town to Bexley, the boss
said take the remainder day off
and week til further notice. We
saw blankets on the side of the
roads on footpaths with bodies
under them, it was sad and heart
breaking.
Jacinta Roosing: In a car on
Riccarton Rd, not far from the
mall. Then hoping my son had
got back from Science Alive
school trip. Took an hour to get
to Ilam School. A lady at my
work lost her daughter in the
CTV building, she was 16-yearsold.
Glynne Duncan: At an agecare
facility trying to save the
elderly (dementia) from falling
over, then dealing with the
horrific aftermath, injured people
coming in needing assistance,
scared families of our residents
coming in needing comfort,
trying to contact my family but
no reception. A day I will never
forget, its the day I truly realised
how precious life is and to never
take it for granted.
Susan Jane Gallagher: In our
house in Wainoni recovering
from a neck operation, scary as
everything was falling around
me. My partner was in town
working near the CTV building,
he took nearly six hours to get
home.
Sharon McLeod: I was sitting
in my flat, watching the news. I
even remember a little boy asking
me if Whangarei was going to
have an earthquake.
Joanne Kennedy: Never forget,
up Rapaki Rd. Looking after two
wee girls. Took me a while to go
back up that hill.
Rach White: At home, 36
weeks pregnant, watching

on Facebook about the guy
who predicted the big one. Was
supposed to be getting milk from
Countdown Eastgate but couldn’t
be bothered at the time and
figured I’d go later.

remember climbing a vertical
ladder on the outside of
Fendalton Library to get to
the roof, thought I was drunk
couldn’t work out why the
building was swaying. Never
forget that day until I forget
everything.

outside watching our house
move every time there was an
aftershock.

Burnside West set sights on more
silverware after one-day success

BURNSIDE West Uni are
swiftly turning their focus to
the back end of the two-day
competition after their first piece
of silverware this season.
Burnside beat Lancaster Park
by five wickets on Sunday in the
final of the one-day portion of
the OEM Audio men’s premiership
– their second win in the
last three seasons.
Captain Matt Hay said the
team has had to shift their attention
quickly.
“We’ve got two rounds to go
and we’ve got a wee bit of a buffer
at the top there.
“I guess the focus changed
pretty quickly into making sure
we finish the season well.”
Burnside hold a 15-point lead
over Lancaster Park in the twoday
standings with two rounds
left, spanning four weeks.
Hay said they were staying
relaxed ahead of the run-in to
the end of the season.
“We’ve got a pretty young group
of guys who just enjoy playing
cricket, and the good thing with
the youth I guess is they probably
don’t look too far ahead and they
just really enjoy playing and training
and ripping in.”
But the prospect of completing
an historic double of one-day
and two-day trophies – a feat
last accomplished by Burnside in
1992 – is extremely exciting.
“It would be very, very special
for us,” said Hay. “We are aware
of, I suppose, what it means for
the club and what place it would
have in the club’s history to be
able to do that.’’
The first team standing in their
way is East Shirley, who they
will clash with over the next two
Saturdays in the first of their last
two games.Easts are only sixth in

“Yeah, (they’re) always a tough
opponent, no matter how they’re
going in a competition.
“They’re always up for a fight
and a very competitive side, so
we know we’ve got to be good
this weekend and they’re not going
to give us anything.
“We’ll just have to rip in
and try and put them under
pressure.”

Lancaster Park scraped a draw
in their match against Burnside
last Saturday, holding on for 69

was curtailed by pitch issues
meaning only one day’s play was
possible, leading to no result.
Heathcote host St Albans this
weekend at Heathcote Domain,
after coming close to forcing a
come-from-behind victory against
Sydenham, trailing after the first
innings but coming one wicket
short of bowling Sydenham out
well short of their target.
Sydenham will pick themselves
up and take on Merivale-
Papanui at Sydenham Park, who
are still searching for their first

CASHMERE’S MEN’S and
Elmwood’s women’s tennis
teams, the winners of the first
round of Christchurch premier
interclub competition, are
looking to repeat their success
in the second-round semi-final
playoffs on Saturday.
In the men’s competition
Cashmere has been a class act
all season and meets rivals
Elmwood, who have been affected
by player availability in
the post-Christmas competition.
The other semi-final is between
Bishopdale and Burnside Park,
teams of young players, many of
whom have played college tennis
in the United States.
Cashmere will go into its
semi-final as favourites given its
dominance in the round-robin
matches, but much will depend
on who of the many players
on Elmwood’s books takes the
court.

said his team is looking
forward to playing Elmwood in
front of a home crowd.
“We haven’t played them in
semi-final or final on our courts
for some time. We always enjoy
our matches against them and
recognise it will be 50-50 given

United fizzing ahead of Charity Cup clash

CHRISTCHURCH United will
have their first chance to pick
up silverware in 2024 when they
take on Wellington Olympic in
the pre-season Charity Cup in
Wellington on Sunday.
The cup is played for by the
winners of the previous season’s
National League and Chatham
Cup winners – which were
Olympic and United respectively.
United head

Edwards said he’s
excited for his
team to be in the
Charity Cup.
“I think it’s a really
cool initiative
for New Zealand
football to get a
competition like
Ryan
Edwards
this started up in the country
and it’s gonna be really cool.”
The chance to pick up silverware
early in the season is enticing
for Edwards – although he
feels his team is up against it due
to the timing of the fixture.
“I think Olympic have been
training for five weeks because
they’ve got the OFC (Champions
League) qualifiers afterwards,”
he said.
“So they’ll be at the end of
their pre-season in terms of
match readiness and we’re at the
start of ours, so it’s not a very
balanced position to be going
into.”

Lawson aims to go one better at open

The groundskeeper has worked
at the Christchurch Golf Club for
37 years – since he was 16 – and
will compete in the New Zealand
Hickory Open there starting on
Tuesday.
Hickory golf is a sport akin to
regular golf, but using clubs in
the style of those made 100 years
ago, with wooden shafts and
heads.
This is the third edition of the
open, and Lawson has competed
in both previous events. He was
runner-up last year, just one shot
behind winner Sir Bob Charles.
Lawson believes he could do
well at this year’s open, but admits
he will need to be on form.
“If you go well, you’ve probably
got a chance, and if you don’t go
well, you’ve got no chance,” he
said.
“So, you’ve just got to turn
up and play well, and if you do,
you’ve got a chance, haven’t
you?”
Defending champion Charles
will be competing again this
year.
“If I’m upright, I’ll be there,”
he said.
“I haven’t had a huge amount
of preparation so I’ve got low
expectations, but I always do –
better that than to have high expectations
and be disappointed.”
Anthony Doyle, the club
professional at Christchurch who
won back-to-back Shirley Opens
on this course from 2009-10, will
also be taking part.
Lawson’s form will hold him in
good stead – he currently leads
the Harry Vardon Challenge, a
weekly competition played by
hickory fans in Christchurch.

He has played golf since he was
14, but hickory has given him a
new love for the game after being
introduced to it just days before
the first New Zealand Hickory
Open.
“I play more golf now, I would
only ever be dragged out by my
mates sort of once a month.
They’d put my name down and
I’d go and play and it was really
to hang out with them,” he said.
“Where now I can happily play
twice a week – definitely once
a week – so I’m much keener to
play hickory golf than I’ve ever
been to play golf.”

Dealing with extreme summer weather
IT HASN’T been an easy
summer in the garden.
Exceptionally unsettled
weather has occurred in all parts
of New Zealand with extremes
of heat, wind and rain. Regardless,
it’s still a significant time for
harvesting crops and reaping the
benefits of your hard work both
in the home orchard and vegetable
garden.
Ensure salad plants are regularly
watered to maintain healthy
growth, especially cucumbers,
tomatoes, lettuce and radishes.
Remove any plants that have
cropped and finished for the season
to provide room for winter
vegetables (broccoli, brussels
sprouts, cabbages and cauliflower)
which can now be planted
to mature in the early winter.
Consider saving seed from your
favourite summer vegetables,
particularly beans and tomatoes.
Late season’s peaches and
plums are now maturing, and
apples and pears are beginning to
ripen, particularly early varieties
such as gala. Fruit are now forming
on citrus trees (ripening in
mid-winter). Ensure all fruit trees
are well mulched to help maintain
soil moisture and reduce
weed growth.
Most strawberry fruiting has
now finished, so allow growth to
provide runners for next seasons
plantings or remove old plants.
Almost all herbs thrive in the
hot sunny summer months.
However, a number do flower
and go to seed, so remove and replace
with fresh new plants. You
can also gather leaves for drying
which is easy to do. Simply place
the leaves in a shallow tray in a
dry, sunny, sheltered position.
Leave them for about two to three
weeks, which should be sufficient
time for drying.

Mulch is essential for plant health
WHEN IT SEEMS so hot you
could probably fry an egg on the
footpath, you can almost believe
you could fry another one on
exposed garden soil too.
At any rate, that soil can get
hot in summer. And then we
ask young, tender plants to
grow in such soil—material that
heats up under the super-dry
surface.
These conditions are brutal and
can be traced to many vegetable
garden failures.
Shade always helps, but
many plants need full sun to
grow, so you can’t put up an
umbrella.
The only bit that needs total
shade is the roots.
The traditional solution is to
spread straw over the ground as
a mulch around each plant to
create an insulating layer that
protects the soil from direct solar
exposure.
The word ‘‘mulch’’ describes
a specific type of material that
is non-specific in its origins but
functions much like goose down
in a winter coat.
Down retains its loft to create a
thick zone of dead air for maximum
insulation.
In the garden, people have long
used mulch around their vegetables
to create a similar insulation
layer between the sun and soil
INSULATION: Take care when adding mulch, it’s important to apply a generous amount.

Mulch does other things,
provided it’s 5-6cm deep, and
preferably more.
First, mulch prevents surface
crusting of the soil so water introduced
goes straight in.
Second, it shades the soil so
roots will find a sizeable zone of
cool rich soil.
Third, mulch laid thick enough
cuts off light to the soil surface,
denying weeds incentive to
grow.
You can also use mulch in pathways
through the garden to keep
your feet clean while watering or
picking.
Mulch is not a soil amendment
because the best materials resist
decomposition.
If they are tilled in, you risk
nutritional problems in the soil
because the lignin in these cell
walls is hard for microbes to
break down.
They may even rob the soil of
its nitrogen to help in the decomposition
process.
You can re-use mulch season
after season.
In late autumn, rake mulch off
your garden and into a pile to use
again.
It’s great for freeze/thaw mulching
after the first frost, or just
stockpiled for the following year’s
food garden.
Straw is commonly used
because it’s widely available and
cheap.
A single bale of straw can cover
even a good-sized garden with
plenty of insulation for plants and
pathways.
Even if there’s a lot of rain and
mud, the straw holds its loft. Look
for mulches you can obtain for
little money, such as wood chips,
bark chips or sawdust from a local
timber mill, or autumn leaves
you’ve put aside.
Mulches aren’t laid out until the
soil becomes warm enough and
plants are under way.
If you put it on too early the soil
won’t heat up enough to germinate
your seeds efficiently or
stimulate seedling growth.
Keep your mulch layer 3cm or
more away from the base of the
plants to avoid stem problems.
Mulches aren’t always the bestlooking
part of the garden, but
they are essential to enhancing
plant health.
Nothing works better for water
conservation, and they also help
eliminate or limit weeds.
A well-mulched garden means
more time to go to the beach or
on a picnic—rather than staying
home to weed.
