EXHAUSTED and tough going
– that was the response from
Aranui teenager CJ Hogan, who
biked 100km from Beckenham
to Akaroa at the weekend for the
first time.
CJ’s mum, Tania Hogan,
said he was very happy to have
completed such a distance.
“He even said he would like to
do another long-distance bike
ride at some point.”
CJ completed the journey
in eight and a half hours on
Saturday, alongside 16-year-old
Jay Anderson, Dave Whittam
and Steve Muir.
Muir is the founder of the
Aranui Bike Fixup, a group of
volunteers who repair donated
bikes and give them to people
in the eastern suburbs. The
group often hosts weekend rides
to Bottle Lake and along the
Rapaki Track on the Port Hills.
The Showman
by Simon Shuster
Acclaimed journalist Simon Shuster gives us the first inside account of the
Russian invasion of Ukraine from the perspective of President Volodymyr
Zelensky and his team, who granted him unprecedented access. Based
on four years of reporting; extensive travels with President Zelensky to the
front; and dozens of interviews with him, his wife, his friends and enemies,
his advisers, ministers and military commanders, The Showman tells a story
of the President’s evolution from a slapstick actor to a symbol of resilience,
revealing how he managed to rally the world’s democracies behind his cause.
Anna O
by Matthew Blake
Anna O hasn’t opened her eyes for four years. Not since the night she was
found in a deep sleep by the bodies of her best friends, suspected of a
chilling double murder. For Doctor Benedict Prince, a forensic psychologist
on London’s Harley Street, waking Anna O could be career-defining. As an
expert in sleep, he knows all about the darkest chambers of the mind; the
secrets that lie buried in the subconscious. As he begins Anna O’s treatment
– studying his patient’s dreams, combing her memories, visiting the site
where the horrors played out – he pulls on the thread of a deeper, darker
mystery. Awakening Anna O isn’t the end of the story, it’s just the beginning.
safety
project
nearly
finished
• By Sasha Watson
A RAISED pedestrian crossing
outside St James School on Rowan
Ave, which was supposed to be
completed by the beginning of the
school term, will be constructed
in a few weeks.
It marks the final part of the
city council’s Aranui Streets Project,
a trial of safety improvements
in high pedestrian areas. Ninety
per cent of the project is funded
by New Zealand Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi’s Streets for
People programme.
Last year, city council staff were
asked to go back to the school
and discuss its concerns about its
drop-off zone being turned into a
pedestrian area, and the removal
of a car park.
City council transport planning
and delivery manager Jacob
Bradbury said the only portion
of the project on hold was outside
the school.
“On Friday, the project
team met with principal Rose
Firth-Scott to discuss options.
Scheduling a meeting time was a
challenge last month due to the
start of the school term, resulting
in delays.”
Firth-Scott would not discuss
the matter with Pegasus Post.
Toki sculpture comes full circle
• By Sasha Watson
IT’S FULL circle for both
artist Jon Jeet and his He Toki
Maitai sculpture, which has
been permanently placed on the
former New Brighton School site.
The 2.2m-tall steel toki (axe),
originally completed in 2022, is
displayed next to the Roy Stokes
Community Hall, on the site
where Seaview Development will
be building 65 homes.
“Wow – what
a journey it has
been,” said Jeet,
who lives close
to the toki’s final
resting place.
“I like that it
has gone back
Jon Jeet
to the site where
I was creating
pieces in my
JOURNEY: Jon Jeet drew inspiration for the sculpture from his Indian, Fijian and Māori ancestors as well as the Seaview
Development rebuild of the earthquake-damaged site.
art studio, which was at the old
school.
“The piece takes me back to
building relations with Renew
New Brighton and the many,
many artists who were there.”
The toki was commissioned
by SCAPE Public Art, after
Jamie Hanton, then the managing
curator, approached Jeet in
response to the theme Sweat
Equity, where different artists
explored the effect of capital and
labour on bodies.
Jeet drew inspiration from
his Indian ancestors who were
brought to Fiji as indentured labourers.
The work also references
the former school being in the
process of redevelopment.
“The earthquakes happened
and I wanted to make a work that
talked about ‘we’re ploughing into
the soil again’. A part of the inspiration
for the design was asking
myself, why am I making this?”
Jeet is also of Ngāti Maniapoto
descent. Traditionally, Māori
shaped and used toki for several
purposes, from gardening to
wood carving. They could also
be carried ceremonially as a
symbol of power and authority.
“We wear these forms now, but
they had functionality too. They
were used as tools,” he said.
Jeet said there were “so many
people involved” to get the art to
where it is.
“Thanks to Leigh Mason, the
Coombes sheet metal and fabrication
director, for assistance in the
initial construction and donating
the $20,000 it cost to make, and to
all, for their support.”
The last $7000 was funded
by SCAPE. Executive director
Richard Aindow said it was exciting
to bring Jeet’s work to New
Brighton.
“SCAPE’s vision is to bring
permanent artworks to life in
communities across the whole
city. It’s immensely satisfying to
install a piece where the artist
lives and works.”
Jeet has a master’s degree in
painting from Canterbury University’s
Ilam School of Fine Arts
Project aiming to
make streets safer
• From page 1
But Burwood Ward city
councillor Kelly Barber, who
was at the meeting, said Firth-
Scott endorsed installing a
raised pedestrian crossing
outside and again opposed
changes to the drop-off zone.
“After consultation, there will
be no changes to the drop-off
area and Rose is happy with
that outcome,” Barber said.
The Aranui Streets Project
was developed following community
engagement, with safety
improvements to high pedestrian
areas around Chisnallwood
Intermediate School, Haeata
Community Campus, St James
School, Wainoni Park and the
Hampshire St shops.
Improvements include installation
of safe speed bumps, upgrades
to pedestrian crossings
and intersections, and widening
footpaths.
Barber said because the
project is temporary, anything
installed which is of concern
may be reversed, depending on
community feedback.
“The overall sentiment of
what the council is trying to
achieve is positive but it is
important to find solutions that
make sense. I hope the speed
bumps stay.’’
The removal of car parking
has prompted some concerns.
Eastern Eagles Rugby League
Club volunteer Fina F’amoe was
LIMITED PARKING:
Median-flex posts have
been installed outside
Wainoni Park taking away
about 15-20 parks.
worried about the lack of parking
along Hampshire St in front
of Wainoni Park, now medianflex
posts have been installed.
“We already have limited
parking and now we’ve lost
about 15-20 car parks. What
happens when league season
begins or events are held? We
need to park somewhere,” said
F’amoe.
Bradbury said 70 per cent
of construction of the project
was under way. The project was
looking to meet its proposed
completion date of March 18,
depending on weather.
Work outside the former Avondale
Primary School has started
and includes adding raised
pedestrian crossings and new
road markings. After that, work
will start outside Chisnallwood
before moving on to Rowan Ave
outside St James School.
The intention is for no work
to happen outside schools between
8.20-9am and 2.30-3pm.
Frustration after thieves
leave residents powerless
• By Emily O’Hagan
PRESCHOOL teachers from
Educational Child Care Centre
in Dallington are at their wits’
end.
They have arrived at work to
find there is no power on four
separate occasions over the last
two weeks.
The outages were caused by
thieves who have been stealing
copper from the powerlines
along Gayhurst Rd at night.
This means some Dallington
residents, and businesses like the
child care centre, are waking up
to find they have no electricity.
Educational Child Care Centre
manager Sarah Webb-Matenga
said it is proving difficult to keep
the preschool running.
“We just haven’t been able to
open. The first time we couldn’t
open until after 10. And this last
two times, it was sort of nine”.
The centre is concerned the
ongoing issue of outages could
result in them losing some families
to other preschools.
The difficult situation is
starting to become stressful
for parents trying to drop off
their children first thing in the
morning.
Sara Farmer, a parent of
one of the preschoolers, said
FRUSTRATION: Thieves have stolen copper wire from
the Educational Child Care Centre in Dallington on four
separate occasions leaving the business without power.
PHOTO: EMILY O’HAGAN
the situation is incredibly
challenging for parents.
“We have to get to work or we
have our day set out and planned
already and this is just a setback
for your morning”.
The repeated bold attacks are
puzzling residents, who have
various theories as to who might
be responsible and why they are
doing it.
Farmer said it must be someone
who is trained in dealing with
power lines.
“It’s not like every Tom, Dick
and Harry knows how to take
down power lines. It’s just insane.”
• Watch the video on
Starnews.co.nz
It is not just the adults who are
baffled by the run of incidents
– the centre’s children are also
confused about what is going on.
Webb-Matenga said the kids
are frightened of the thieves.
“We had a wee boy arrive this
morning with a torch in case it’s
dark again”.
The childcare centre is asking
nearby residents to keep their
eyes open and to report any
suspicious activity, and they hope
police can make this electric
crime wave in Dallington a
priority.
Gardeners plan pantry
after health scare
• By Sasha Watson
A FOOD pantry will be set
up for the Travis Country
community in Burwood by keen
gardeners, Nick and Megan
Hamilton.
It comes
after they moved
from their sheep
and beef farm in
North Canterbury
to Travis
Country in April
2022, following a
Nick
Hamilton
Megan
Hamilton
health scare.
“My father had
a brain bleed and
died suddenly
in 2020. Shortly
after, I began
to get intense
headaches. I
thought it was
depression,” said
Hamilton.
“But, the
headaches kept
getting worse so
I went in for a scan. The doctors
found a brain tumour and operated
on it.
“They are happy with its
progress and I’ve begun working
again, for a farming bank. With
a health scare like this, it makes
you think about what is important
in life.”
HELPING HAND: A food
pantry, similar to the
Somerfield Community
Pantry, is being set up for
Travis Country by keen
gardeners, Nick and Megan
Hamilton.
PHOTO: FACEBOOK
Hamilton said spending time
with his family and “making sure
to live every day” was his focus
now, as well as spending time in
his vegetable garden.
“The share pantry idea started
with Megan, as we had an overabundance
of all sorts of things.
In Amberley, there was a similar
pantry which was quite successful,”
said Hamilton.
Hamilton went to the Waitai-
Coastal-Burwood-Linwood
Community Board last year with
his proposal. He has been working
on a design, with help from
builders in the area.
Said Hamilton: “I can swing
a hammer, but I’m no builder. I
would like the pantry to be built
well and serve the community
for many years to come as excess
produce would be put into a
green bin otherwise.”
He said there was a need for it
with the cost of living.
Community board member
Greg Mitchell was supportive
of the idea. He said St Paul’s
Lutheran Church has offered to
host the pantry in the church car
park.
The local primary school and
kindergarten have also expressed
interest in helping with the project,
Mitchell said.
“There are so many bad
things going on – it is nice to see
good things, like this initiative,
happening.”
Hamilton hopes the pantry
will be up and running by spring.
LONG DISTANCE: Four teenagers and four adults made
up the Saturday ride group with half opting to finish the
ride at 50km, and the rest continuing on to Akaroa.
Riders improve lives
• From page 1
“I feel like the east gets the raw
deal in terms of infrastructure
and places to ride along,” said
Muir.
“The area holds many families
with low incomes and they can’t
afford to buy a bike from a
shop.
“A lot of the kids from the
area have never been to the Port
Hills, so we take them out to
see different places and get into
nature. We also help reduce the
chance of antisocial behaviours
later in life.”
CJ is one of just over 920 people
who have received a donated
bike since the group began
three years ago. He volunteers
on Thursdays to help other kids
repair their bikes.
In about eight weeks the
group will donate their 1000th
bike to someone in need.
As someone who has always
“loved and appreciated” bike
riding, Muir found a big need
for both getting people on bikes
and taking people out for rides,
especially after the February 22,
2011 earthquake.
He started the initiative as
it sits well with his “values of
creating a clean environment”
and reducing carbon emissions.
The group is funded by the
city council and organisations
from around the area and operates
from the Breezes Rd Baptist
Church every Thursday from
3-6pm.
“The feedback we get is that
Cupra Born the wild child of the EV world
VIBRANCY, FLAIR, and
passion are deeply embedded into
the DNA of the Spanish, and its
only automotive manufacturer,
Volkswagen owned Seat, have
created an electric car, that is an
automotive expression of those
qualities.
It’s the small to mid-size Cupra
Born, the performance division
of Seat and sits on Volkswagen’s
impressive MEB platform
designed exclusively for EVs.
This compact Spanish dynamo
shares this platform with the
Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen
ID.4 and soon to be launched
here smaller ID.3, that’s similar
in size to the Cupra Born.
The Cupra Born is the wild
child of the Seat family and
putting brand on the map here,
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
after years of living in the shadow
of its higher profile Volkswagen
and Skoda siblings.
A fun, affordable, quality
European performance hatch
brimming with personality,
the $74,990 Cupra Born EV is a
genuine x-factor vehicle, without
the usual mega price tag.
It looks the part with LED
Daytime Running Lights
with unique signature Full
LED headlights, and 19-inch
Copper Typhoon alloy wheels.
Completing the picture are
aerodynamic side sills, floating
C-pillar and Copper CUPRA
badging. All this made the
test vehicle a bit of a people
magnet when it was parked up,
most knowingly nodding their
approval.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9 Handling 8; Build Quality
8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for money
7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8.5
The test car had heaps of heft
from a beefy 77kWh battery
and an electric motor producing
150 kW of power and 310 Nm
of torque. However, the Cupra
has a performance trick up its
sleeve with E-Boost that its ID.4
and Enyaq siblings miss out on.
This maximises acceleration and
enhances all round performance.
The vehicles standard battery
is good for a healthy 150kW, but
with e-Boost standard on Born
models sold here, that figure
surges to 170kW, enough to
propel the car from 0-100 km/h
in a snappy 6.6 seconds. This
is activated via a Drive Profile
button. E-Boost works its magic
for a maximum of 30 seconds to
protect the battery, but accessible
at any time, depending on the
charge state of the battery and its
temperature.
There’s a genuine performance
edge to the Born with its rapid
acceleration both off the mark,
and once on the move, and boy
does it move!
With an undeniable energy and
urgency about this electric power
train it’s one that performance
car enthusiast driver are Born to
love.
The cabin is smaller than both
the ID.4 and Enyaq, with this
pair a better choice if load and
people carrying capacity are
important. However, it is well
appointed with a floating 12-
inch touchscreen, multi-colour
ambient lighting, dual-zone
climate control air conditioning
and split folding rear seats
with ski hatch. Keeping you
connected is a 12-inch colour
touchscreen including Bluetooth,
2 USB-C ports and integrated
voice control wireless phone
charger.
Having the high-voltage
battery located in the floor
between the axles provides the
almost perfect low centre of
gravity, for optimum agility and
balance that under pins this cars
next level road holding. Grip
and stability through even the
tightest corners is masterfully
tenacious and among the best I
have experienced in an EV.
The trade-off is low speed
ride comfort that isn’t that well
cushioned, and suspension
noise, while not over bearing
it still makes it presence heard.
Annoying at times in town
driving, but a concession I
would happily make for this car’s
sublime handling.
Minor amendment to the enrolment scheme of Te Oraka
The Ministry of Education is proposing a minor amendment to the enrolment scheme of Te Oraka (formerly
Shirley Intermediate). This is to add their te reo Māori special programme – Te Tāhu Rua Reo, to their enrolment
scheme.
Students who meet the criteria for enrolment and live within the home zone must be enrolled ahead of out-of-zone
students. Out-of-zone students who meet the criteria for enrolment in the special programme have priority in
enrolment above all other out-of-zone students while special programme places are available. The enrolment of
out-of-zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
A copy of the proposed enrolment scheme is available at
https://consultation.education.govt.nz/education/te-oraka-shirley-intermediate-special-programme/
Comments can be made to Canterbury.EnrolmentSchemes@education.govt.nz by 26 March 2024.
