Peter Garrett and Jazelle Alderdice live in Clifton and say surfing at Sumner Beach keeps them mentally and physically fit as they get close to retirement. “The main goal for me is to keep myself in shape and keep being able to go out. I’ll take what comes every day and continue enjoying what comes,” said 74-year-old Garrett. “I quite often get out of bed and go down and have a surf and then come home in time for breakfast.” He introduced Alderdice, 64, to surfing at Orewa beach near Auckland soon after they met. “He pushed me onto a wave and he said to me, ‘this is going to be the best experience of your life.” She was not convinced. “When I started riding on the wave, standing up on it for the first time, I thought, ‘oh my god, this is the best experience of my life’.’” Like Garrett, Alderdice has no plans to stop surfing. “As long as I can manage to hold my board up and my body can handle it, of course I’ll keep going.” DEDICATED: 74-year-old Peter Garrett has been surfing at Sumner Beach for more than 20 years. Garrett and partner Jazelle Alderdice find many ways to stay active and enjoy nature together. The couple met at a festival in 2010 and found a connection. “We both love food and being in the natural world. We have maturity as people to, you know, not sweat the small stuff,” said Alderdice. Alderdice also stays active through cycling and tramping, but the couple still find time to surf together. “We can share the experience and talk about the waves,” said Alderdice. Surfing is Garrett’s main hobby after starting later in life when he was 51. “When I was a beginner I was not very good, but I always work actively on improving myself. So I’ve enjoyed the journey of slowly catching up with others.” He’s surfed in Byron Bay in New South Wales and beaches in Bali, but Garrett says Sumner Beach is his personal favourite. He first enjoyed the soft but steady nature of the waves at Sumner when he was introduced to longboarding by a friend. “It’s probably one of the best beaches in the world,” he said. “Consequently it’s busy in the summertime. Sometimes you can see 60 to 80 surfers lined up along the beach.” Alderdice said it is a great spot for older surfers. “There’s really good, gentle waves, but you can still have fun.” Garrett revels in selecting a wave at the beach and executing a surf. “I’m always quite hungry for waves.” He has a passion for health and wellbeing, both physically through surfing and mentally through his career as a hypnotherapist. “You’ve got to look after your health. If you want to keep going in older age.” Surfing is not Garrett’s only method of staying fit. He also enjoys cycling, tramping and gardening. Why Struggle?! Wednesday March 6 2024 Bay Harbour News Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NEWS 11 to health and wellbeing for couple Throughout his career he has seen a growing understanding of the link between physical and mental health. “People realise that their nutrition and their exercise, and their time outdoors always factors into the journey back into a state of wellbeing.” Garrett’s said his active hobbies are critical for maintaining good mental health, a message he tries to impart to his clients. “If I wasn’t able to do those things, I’d be less happy. I’m very connected in to the natural world.” He is partially retired and winding down operations at his hypnotherapy business. Alderdice shares her partner’s love of the beach environment. “It’s this dance with nature. It’s the joy of the balance and the grace it requires.” She mostly uses a stand-up paddleboard. “I was older when we started and I knew I wouldn’t have the back or arm strength for longboarding, so I’ve stuck with the paddleboard.” Alderdice is working part time as a psychotherapist and will retire within the next few years. The couple’s advice to older people who might want to try surfing is to start with paddleboarding. “Take it slowly. If you choose the wrong board you can make life very difficult for yourself,” said Garrett. Alderdice recommends surfing to all. “The fact that there’s now standup paddleboarding means it is easier for people to get into, no matter what age.” All the usual events are on offer with the full triathlon (swim/bike/run) and duathlon (run/bike/run) being supported by a junior and short course event along with a 5-9 year olds aquathon (swim/run). The challenging scenic course has always been the main draw card, “you will be hard pressed to find a course with better views anywhere in the world, the trail run in particular from Godley Head is just incredible” comments Newsom. All events are open to individuals and teams with current entries tracking well ahead of past years.
