PACKING A “go bag” and
investing in low flammability
plants were among the top tips
at a fire preparedness session last
Thursday.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand risk management officer
Kerri Pring said the talk was
intended for residents living in
the Port Hills or nearby areas like
Heathcote, Sumner and Lyttelton.
Attendees were made aware of
what plants have low flammability.
“These can help slow a fastmoving
wildfire and protect your
property,” said Pring.
She also stressed the importance
of having a household evacuation
plan with essentials packed.
For people living on hills, Pring
noted fire travels uphill at double
speed for every 10 degrees of
increased slope.
“Those who live on hills should
be aware of how fast a wildfire
below could impact on them.”
She warned climate change
and the current hot summer are
increasing fire risks.
“People need to be prepared for
more wildfires and the impact
that could have on their homes
and the community around
them,” said Pring.
She said the fires were “top of
mind for some people’’.
“I’d like to think many people
went home from that session
thinking about how they can
Planning ahead for future fires
TOP TIPS: FENZ risk management officer Kerri Pring gave a one hour talk educating
residents on key fire safety tips. The session had been postponed from February 15
because of the Port Hills fire.
protect themselves better.”
About 40 people attended the
session at the Heathcote Valley
Community Centre which had
been planned before the Port Hills
fire.
The session had been postponed
from February 15 because FENZ
staff were needed to fight the fires.
“It just goes to show how
important talking about
these things actually is,” said
community centre manager Jen
Saunders.
There was increased interest in
the event since the fire, she said.
Funding to
aid planting
of natives
A FUND HAS been established to
assist native tree regeneration in the
area affected by the Port Hills fire.
The Christchurch Foundation
created the fund which will help
the Te Kākahu Kahukura initiative
plant low flammability native trees
and invest in weeding and predator
control.
Foundation chief executive Amy
Carter said predator traps in the
fire area have been destroyed and
will also need replacing.
“We would encourage people to
give because the environmental
sector is acutely underfunded, but
we also know it is one of the top
priorities when you ask people
where money should be spent.”
She said the fund may also help
pay for rock stabilisation in the fire
area to help make the area safe for
planting and other conservation
work.
The Te Kākahu Kahukura
initiative is a pact where many
Banks Peninsula organisations
have agreed to plant native trees.
Discussions among initiative
signatories are ongoing, as they
determine which part of the fire
area should be worked on first and
what native trees should be planted.
