St Margaret’s top Canty
school at SI champs
Riccarton
streets get
safety
upgrades
• By Sam Coughlan
ST MARGARET’S College
has finished the South Island
secondary school rowing
championships as the top
Canterbury school and third
best overall, behind Wakatipu
High School and Timaru Boys’
High.
The crews won the U17 coxed
four, U18 coxless pair, U15
coxed eight and U18 novice
coxed four, at Lake Ruataniwha
in Twizel. The gold medals
were accompanied by four
silvers.
The result is an improvement
on last year’s two golds, three
silvers and five bronzes, and
saw St Margaret’s finish as
the top girls’ school in the
competition as well.
Scarlett Hansen and Poppy
Blakely were a part of two
winning teams – they won the
U15 coxed eight as well as the
U18 novice four, competing up
three age groups.
Coxswain Bella Harris
directed wins for the U15
coxed eight and U17 coxed
four.
St Andrew’s also performed
strongly at the event.
They won four golds as well –
in the boys’ U16 coxed four and
eight, the girls’ U16 coxed eight
and boys’ U18 coxed four.
A LONG-AWAITED facelift is
coming for a street in Riccarton
as part of a wider package of
upgrade work in the area.
The Bradshaw Tce renewal
starts next week, with construction
running till late May.
“This work has been on the
cards since 2010 and was delayed
after the earthquake,” said city
council transport planning and
delivery manager Jacob Bradbury.
“The community has been patient
enough and has been calling
out for this project, so we’re pleased
to finally be able to deliver it as part
of our wider Riccarton work.”
Upgrades will include a full
street renewal, including a safer
turnaround area at the end of the
cul-de-sac, kerb and channel, new
street trees, and a new garden bed.
The work is part of the city
council’s Christchurch Regeneration
Acceleration Facility package
throughout residential Riccarton.
Other projects will include a
street renewal of the southern end
of Brockworth Pl and various traffic
calming projects and pedestrian
safety upgrades throughout
a number of residential streets.
A new signalised crossing has
been approved for Waimairi Rd
at the Bush Inn Centre and the
city council is investigating options
for a pedestrian crossing on
Deans Ave.
Tactile pavers have also been
installed at all Riccarton Rd
intersections between Matipo and
Balgay Sts and several other sites
in high pedestrian areas.
Thanks for your patience
While work is underway on the construction of a new roundabout
on Candys Road, SH75 and the entrance to RIVERSTONE.
The intention of the new roundabout is to greatly
improve the safety of vehicles, pedestrians
and cyclists .
Donating time to assist their community
Right across the city,
some amazing women
help their community
every day. To mark
International Women’s
Day tomorrow, reporter
Sasha Watson spoke
to advocators and
empowerers Sharon
Layton and Phillipa
Jacobs-Lory
“EVERYONE HAS one hour per
week to spend with a child.”
That’s the motto of Big Brothers
Big Sisters (BBBS) volunteer
Sharon Layton, who has spent
the last nine years giving support
to children and teens in need.
“In 2008 to 2009, almost every
charity was; write a cheque and
give us money. Well, I didn’t
have money. But I had time.”
So, she joined BBBS, where
children and teenagers are
paired up with an adult to spend
an hour together, after school or
on the weekend, for a minimum
of one year.
“The kids get put forward by
a school or a church or similar
because something has happened
in their home life and they’re
falling through the gaps.
“We don’t spend money on
the kids and we don’t interfere.
Anything said doesn’t go back
to their parents, it’s just to be a
stable extra person to trust, talk
STRENGTH: Sharon Layton, left, has spent the last nine years giving an hour each week to
Layton is the owner and operator
of property management firm
“Time is something people
don’t consider but now with how
flexible work can be and it not
being all about working nine to
five, charity work can suit most
people.
myself stopping anytime soon.”
Layton’s longest pairing, which
ended last year, was for seven
years and she said her new
pairing of a few months is going
well.
“It’s a great thing if a kid gets
more out of their life. Some
volunteers go to graduations or
21st parties and some kids say
we, BBBS, have saved their lives,”
said Layton.
There have been 2560 matches
of children, teens and adults
within BBBS’ Christchurch
sector across 20 years, with 175
matches in the past year, and 140
current open matches.
Older adults welcomed at
As we all know, the ability to move
around freely is essential for everyday
life. However, as we age, our mobility
and flexibility can decrease, making it
more difficult to perform our usual daily
activities that require us
to stand, walk, sit, and
bend.
Health professionals tell
us the best way to stay
healthy and continue to
enjoy life as we get older
is to keep being physically
active, which will delay
the reduction in mobility
or even reverse some of
the losses as we age. In
other words, “move it or
lose it”.
Regular exercise can also
increase life expectancy by strengthening
heart and lungs, improving cardiovascular
fitness and helping keep conditions that
affect these vital organs at bay.
According to the World Health
Organisation, a sedentary lifestyle is one
of the 10 leading causes of death and
disability. They advise that even gentle,
regular exercise, such as using a treadmill
or cross trainer, can help increase our
lifespan by three to five
years.
Heather Peterson, who
owns and runs Culture
Fitness Wigram, says her
centre provides classes
and activities that benefit
adults of all ages, and
levels of health and
fitness, and twice a week
the focus is on older
adults.
“On Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 10am to
10.45am we offer an older
adult fitness class run by our fabulous
trainer, Leanne. The classes are very
well received, and we often get feedback
on how much attendees appreciate the
classes and the opportunity to meet
likeminded people,” Heather says.
She describes the environment as
welcoming, offering a sense of community
and belonging.
“The mission is to support people’s
health journey through education,
encouragement, and hand-holding if
necessary.
“As we grow older our bodies change.
Injuries take longer to heal. Our mental
health can be compromised through
loneliness and feelings of isolation. And
research published by the Journal of
Alzheimer’s Disease shows that exercising
regularly will also help reduce the chances
of suffering from dementia in later life,”
Heather says.
“That is why Culture Fitness Wigram
is here. To be the healthy heart of the
individual and the community. I get
such joy from seeing people of the
older demographic out moving, finding
purpose, and smiling and enjoying their
days.”
School year off to
a positive start
Tēnā koutou katoa, warm greetings
to you all
Hornby High School has
commenced 2024 on
a highly positive note,
witnessing a substantial
increase in student
enrolment. In 2023, our
student body began
with 804 individuals,
and presently, the figure
stands at 950. This
growth necessitated the
recruitment of additional
teaching staff and teacher
aides. Fortunately, we
have successfully filled all
positions, enabling us to effectively
manage our timetable and cover all
requisite subject areas.
Furthermore, our new Deaning
system is now operational,
comprising nine Deans spanning
across various year levels. This
framework enhances our ability
to support students in matters
concerning attendance
and academic
performance.
In conjunction with
the promising start to
the academic year, we
have implemented a
comprehensive ban on the
use of cell phones within
the school premises.
Already, we are witnessing
the beneficial effects of
this initiative. Students
are actively engaging in
reading, outdoor sports,
social interactions, and
demonstrating enhanced focus
on their academic pursuits. This
development proves advantageous
for all involved, marking a
commendable achievement for the
school community.
Many enjoy Inspire Event
Range of topics on offer during week
My focus was mainly on
microbiology, and I also had the
chance to attend taster sessions for
physiotherapy, anatomy, and Va'a
o Tautai (Centre for Pacific Health)
during the week.
I want to share with you my amazing
experience at Hands-on Otago.
In microbiology, I learned about
various microbes that exist in our
bodies and the environment. We
took samples and studied how to
identify and classify. We analysed
human blood samples to understand
how our body fights against bacteria.
By performing a blood smear and
examining the blood film under the
microscope, we were able to identify
different types of leukocytes (white
blood cells).
As part of a case study, we looked
into food-borne illnesses found in
cupcakes. Through the results, we
discovered that cupcakes B and C
contained Staphylococcus aureus,
while cupcakes A and D contained E.
coli. Later, we investigated the most
effective antibiotics for each cupcake
bacteria. We placed discs of different
antibiotics such as amoxicillin,
ciprofloxacin, or penicillin on
a bacterial "culture lawn". By
measuring zones of inhibition,
we interpreted the antibiotic
susceptibility of the bacteria, finding
A huge thank you to staff, Year 13
prefects and event organisers who
participated in our Inspire Event in
February.
The event was organised with the
Christchurch City Council and gave
our Hornby community the chance to
participate in a number of fun activities
including a concert with various amazing
acts, dancing from our cultural groups
and stalls to purchase food and goods.
Thank you to all whānau and students
who came and enjoyed the festivities.
while ciprofloxacin was the most
On the first day, I attended a
physiotherapy session where I
learned how to use equipment to
improve my physical health in a way
that is enjoyable for patients.
On the second day, I attended
an anatomy session, during
which I learnt about the female
March 2024
Hornby High is starting
its very own Recycle
a Device (RAD) club in
partnership with the RAD
charity.
The RAD club receives
donated unwanted
laptops and the club
members spend their
time remodelling and
servicing these devices.
Once the devices have
been refurbished, they
are donated back to
the school and other
community organisations
that need them.
Last week we had 20
students from a range
of year levels spend the devices.
entire day training with
RAD technicians, learning how to
refurbish and service laptops.
Students spent the day
understanding how computers
work, identifying different parts, and
diagnosing issues. Then the handson
action took place, replacing parts
and bringing them back to life. They
New pupils, staff welcomed
It was such a
pleasure to warmly
welcome our new
students and staff
to Hornby High
School. After our
Mihi Whakatau
we shared some
delicious kai
together. It was a
wonderful day full
of excitement and
new beginnings.
at the human placenta.
Finally, on the third day, I visited
the Va'a o Tautai (Centre for
Pacific Health) to learn about the
opportunities available to Pacific
students.
We also had to create and sell a
programme for Pacific students in
Otago. Our group came up with a
programme allowing Pacific students
to move back to their country and
support their area of education by
volunteering and teaching.
During my time on campus, I
explored colleges (dorms) available
to first-year students. We had
various tours, including to the dental
school and the anatomy museum.
Overall, we had an enjoyable and
informative experience exploring
the campus and its offerings. I have
learnt about life as a student at
Otago University, especially in terms
of learning and living, thanks to this
programme.
I owe this opportunity to the
funding support provided by
Hornby High School. I am grateful
to our school for allowing me to
have this experience and enhance
my knowledge. I believe that this
programme has helped me grow
and has also helped improve the
representation of Hornby High
School.
RAD club revamps devices
Work in progress: RAD club members work on
worked industriously throughout the
day, not wanting to stop for breaks
or kai.
What an amazing opportunity for
our students to learn remodelling
skills and being able to contribute
towards bringing these much needed
resources back to the community.
Watch this space for developments.
Hornby High School is always on the lookout
for families to become homestay caregivers for our
international students!
Families are reimbursed $325.00 per week. Hosting
a student is a wonderful way to connect you
and your family with another culture.
If you are interested in becoming a homestay
caregiver, email
natasha.austin@hornby.school.nz and we will
send you further information.

MAZDA ISN’T one of the heavy
hitters in our ute arena, but has
undeniable longevity, competing
with varying degree of success in
this market since the mid 1960s.
Up until 2020, the BT50 was
the not-so-well-known twin
of the hugely successful Ford
Ranger, in a model share deal
between Mazda and Ford. For
the current Ranger, Ford opted
out of this arrangement and
instead partnered with European
automotive heavy hitter
Volkswagen, with the current
Ranger the donor vehicle for the
latest Volkswagen Amarok.
Mazda was hardly flush
with offers from other vehicle
manufacturers keen to join forces
with them on a new ute. After a
www.drivesouth.co.nz
End of an era for Mazda’s long-serving ute
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
bit of speed-dating, they tied the
collaboration knot with Isuzu
in a union of two of the smallest
manufacturers of Japanese
utes. Essentially the BT50 is
the current D-Max with some
cosmetic changes.
It seems Mazda’s days in
our ute market are numbered,
having clocked up around 58
years. The latest shipment of
BT50s is reportedly the last.
Mazda NZ deleting the BT50
from their catalogue is due to a
variety of factors including the
huge rise in the popularity of
SUVs, and increasingly tougher
engine emission standards.
The BT50 will still be sold in
Australia.
You can have your BT50 in
Incorporating
best motorbuys
any configuration as long as it’s
a double cab, but you do have
the choice of three specification
levels, starting with the GSX. For
this road test we check out this
model in $57,290 4WD form.
In the engine bay is a familiar
face and one tough customer in
Isuzu’s long serving and durable
turbocharged 3.0L four-cylinder
diesel.
These days it makes a handy,
but hardly class-leading, 140kw
of power. The 450Nm of torque
on tap is below the class average
500Nm most buyers are looking
for, but on the credit side of
the ledger it is as smooth and
refined as most of its rivals. It
showed plenty of energy and
endeavour to comfortably handle
the toughest on and off road
assignments.
If you want a ute that’s relaxing
to drive over long distances, and
who doesn’t, few do it better than
this one. A lot the kudos for this
is down to the BT50’s well-sorted
six-speed automatic that puts in a
consistently good gear-changing
shift, no matter the task.
A well-proportioned cab
provides plenty of leg and
headroom, and the seats are
supportive and comfy, with no
complaints from the passengers I
had on board.
For an entry-level model the
GSX is fairly well suited up.
A touch screen infotainment
system supports both Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto,
while a multi-information
display provides key driving
information.
The balance between ride
comfort and road holding is as
good as you will find among the
current crop of utes, apart from
the class leading Ford Ranger.
This has been achieved
without compromising durability
and strength, with the GSX
offering plenty of both, with a
heavier duty rear suspension
arrangement in recognition of it
being more of a work orientated
ute.
In GSX trim the firmer rear
spring make the low speed ride
over uneven surfaces fidgety.
However, the test ute cornered
confidently with the enjoyment
heightened by well-weighted and
communicative steering.
