Older adults welcomed at
local fitness centre
As we all know, the ability to move
around freely is essential for everyday
life. However, as we age, our mobility
and flexibility can decrease, making it
more difficult to perform our usual daily
activities that require us
to stand, walk, sit, and
bend.
Health professionals tell
us the best way to stay
healthy and continue to
enjoy life as we get older
is to keep being physically
active, which will delay
the reduction in mobility
or even reverse some of
the losses as we age. In
other words, “move it or
lose it”.
Regular exercise can also
increase life expectancy by strengthening
heart and lungs, improving cardiovascular
fitness and helping keep conditions that
affect these vital organs at bay.
According to the World Health
Organisation, a sedentary lifestyle is one
of the 10 leading causes of death and
disability. They advise that even gentle,
regular exercise, such as using a treadmill
or cross trainer, can help increase our
lifespan by three to five
years.
Heather Peterson, who
owns and runs Culture
Fitness Wigram, says her
centre provides classes
and activities that benefit
adults of all ages, and
levels of health and
fitness, and twice a week
the focus is on older
adults.
“On Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 10am to
10.45am we offer an older
adult fitness class run by our fabulous
trainer, Leanne. The classes are very
well received, and we often get feedback
on how much attendees appreciate the
classes and the opportunity to meet
likeminded people,” Heather says.
She describes the environment as
welcoming, offering a sense of community
and belonging.
“The mission is to support people’s
health journey through education,
encouragement, and hand-holding if
necessary.
“As we grow older our bodies change.
Injuries take longer to heal. Our mental
health can be compromised through
loneliness and feelings of isolation. And
research published by the Journal of
Alzheimer’s Disease shows that exercising
regularly will also help reduce the chances
of suffering from dementia in later life,”
Heather says.
“That is why Culture Fitness Wigram
is here. To be the healthy heart of the
individual and the community. I get
such joy from seeing people of the
older demographic out moving, finding
purpose, and smiling and enjoying their
days.”
