Life’s a beach Tucked into lush greenery on the side of the hill overlooking Taylors Mistake, owner/architect Tim Nees’ freshly complete home sits companionably among the more rough-and-ready (but charmingly retro) baches the small beachside community is famous for. Feature | <strong>Magazine</strong> 29 The construction dust was barely settled and the paint just dry when architect Tim Nees’ newly built and self-designed home took out two top nods at the prestigious New Zealand Institute of Architects, netting the clean-lined, striking build both a Canterbury Architecture Award and a coveted Resene Colour Award. “Clearly the home of an architect who cares how every part of their building looks and feels, Taylors Mistake House is an exercise in attentionto-detail that is so thorough it is intrinsic, with no component unresolved,” reads the judges’ citation. “Examples of this are everywhere, from the beautifully resolved structure holding up the house to the sculptural downpipes. Planning has been so thoroughly resolved inside that the house only needs a single internal door. Building placement on the hillside site is cleverly handled so the built forms create an amazingly calm courtyard, carefully landscaped to give a relaxed, modern feel.” Regarding the luxuriously laid-back and understated yet somehow also bright and bold colour palette, judges noted “the stark white exterior is like an eggshell: once inside the colour changes to warm, natural, yellow ochre shades of the beach and nature, making you feel comfortable and at home”. Tim, who now runs his practice, New Work Studio, out of the Taylors Mistake site, says inspiration for the rather brilliant seaside abode came from multiple sources, from working adjacent to Kiwi architectural legends Miles Warren and Ian Athfield to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and the work of Italian still-life painter Giorgio Morandi – and not least the humble heritage dwellings dotted below.
