Creating a safe and clean<br />

environment<br />

<strong>Keppel</strong> Seghers Engineering<br />

Singapore (KSES) was lauded<br />

for its efforts in promoting<br />

and maintaining a safe<br />

working environment. It was<br />

recently awarded the<br />

Certificate of Excellence by<br />

the Land Transport Authority<br />

(LTA) for its safety<br />

achievement of over<br />

700,000 accident free<br />

manhours on the C413<br />

Kallang-Paya Lebar<br />

Expressway (KPE) project.<br />

“The Certificate of Excellence<br />

is the highest award given t<br />

o an electrical and<br />

mechanical contractor for<br />

Occupational Safety and<br />

Health Management. This<br />

recognition will spur us to<br />

<strong>Keppel</strong>ite I September 2007<br />

continuously improve our<br />

safety standards,” said<br />

of KSES.<br />

Speaking at LTA’s 9th Annual<br />

Safety Award Convention,<br />

Guest-of-Honour Mrs Lim<br />

Hwee Hua, Minister of State<br />

for Finance and Transport,<br />

stressed the importance<br />

of safety compliance<br />

for management and<br />

working level, “Leadership<br />

commitment has the<br />

greatest impact on the safety<br />

culture of an organisation.<br />

“However, this strong<br />

emphasis on safety culture<br />

also needs to filter down the<br />

partners to create a holistic,<br />

sustainable and systemic<br />

safety culture in Singapore.”<br />

Besides implementing safety<br />

management plans, KSES<br />

has gone beyond complying<br />

LTA’s safety standards.<br />

KSES organises regular<br />

programmes safety<br />

promotion campaigns for its<br />

workers, sub-contractors and<br />

customers to instill a sense of<br />

responsibility for safety from<br />

the management to staff.<br />

KSES has also achieved the<br />

ISO 14001:2004 Standard on<br />

Environmental Management<br />

System (EMS) certification,<br />

an internationally recognised<br />

certification for<br />

environmental management<br />

systems. It specifies<br />

requirements for establishing<br />

an environmental policy,<br />

determining environmental<br />

aspects and impacts of<br />

products.<br />

With the ISO 14001<br />

certification, KSES is able to<br />

implement, maintain and<br />

improve its environmental<br />

management system, ensure<br />

conformance with its own<br />

stated environmental policy,<br />

demonstrate conformance,<br />

ensure compliance with<br />

environmental laws and<br />

regulations.<br />

ISO 14001 certification will<br />

also elevate KSES’s standing<br />

and stature internationally.<br />

preferred choice for EPC<br />

(Engineering, Procurement<br />

and Construction) jobs, or as<br />

preferred stakeholders in<br />
