16 Business On the alert In today’s volatile world where global events can potentially disrupt business operations, Keppel works at minimising risk by continually refining its business continuity systems to bolster resilience of its operations. Simulation exercises and drills are held regularly across the Keppel Group of companies to equip employees with appropriate responses and behaviour in the event of disaster. This month, at Keppel O&M, the shipyards confronted “terrorist” and “avian flu attacks”. TACKLING TERRORISM It was an ordinary day at Subic Shipyard when the telephone operator received an ominous warning about a bomb at the yard. With that, a “crisis” begun at Subic Shipyard. Minutes later, the general alarm sounded, and the security teams were immediately deployed to evacuate all personnel in the yard’s Administration Building. Within five minutes, everyone was evacuated and the area secured. The emergency response team comprising firemen, as well as rescue and medical personnel, sprung into action. Meanwhile, the Bomb Disposal Team of the Manila Police District with Keppelite I September 2007 its canine units responded to the yard’s call. A thorough search was conducted as bomb sniffing dogs and its handlers combed the building to locate the “bomb”. Once located, the “bomb” was diffused and safely detonated. By noon, normalcy was restored at the shipyard. Fortunately, the scenario was part of an exercise conducted by Subic Shipyard to assess the effectiveness of the yard’s security arrangements. Said Mr Charles Yap, President of Subic Shipyard, “It is of utmost importance that all yard personnel be aware of such threats and know how to react when it happens. The drill also highlighted the need for close co-operation with the police authorities to diffuse the situation in a safe and orderly manner.” BEATING AVIAN FLU Employees and subcontractors of Keppel Singmarine, Sino-Marine and Leong Chuan Marine were preparing to start the day’s work when avian flu testers Always vigilant: Workers at Keppel Singmarine’s Benoi yard checked for avian flu greeted them, armed with thermometers. This was part of the pandemic exercise to test the yard’s readiness in fighting the avian flu. The exercise took place at Keppel Singmarine (5 Benoi yard). Observing the exercise were Keppel Singmarine’s ED Mr Hoe Eng Hock and Asst GM and Task force Leader Mr Edmund Lek. Commenting on the exercise, Mr Lek, said, “The exercise went well and we learned how to make the whole process smoother and more efficient. Ultimately, the best defence against any disease is individuals being responsible for assessing their own health and not being a conduit or catalyst for contagion.” Keppel O&M’s Business Continuity Management facilitator Mr Joseph Wong and Group Security Senior Manager Anthony Toh were at hand to both render support and give feedback. keppelite
BG Junction celebrates first anniversary BG Junction, Keppel Land’s retail development in Surabaya, Indonesia, celebrated its first anniversary with strong support from the local shoppers. For more than a month from 12 May to 8 July, the management team organised a series of special activities and events to thank customers for a successful year. For every Rp 50,000 purchase, shoppers were given coupons and the winner was announced at the Anniversary Celebration on 8 July 2007. A total of 170,000 coupons were given out.
