Thursday, March 14, 2024
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
Cooper Wightman, 16,
and Daniel Prescott, 17, will
compete in the 1500m at the
U20 national championships,
starting in Wellington today.
Wightman is a year 12
student at Christchurch Boys’
High School while Prescott
finished up at St Thomas’ last
year and will be attending
college in the United States on
an athletics scholarship from
August.
Wightman recently broke
A FIVE-WEEK-long investigation
into the $19 million Wheels to
Wings cycleway started this
week, despite the Government’s
draft proposal to cut funding for
transport projects.
City council staff are looking
into Bishopdale roads to help plan
a construction approach for the
cycleway.
It is concurrent with
investigations into a replacement
water main on Harewood Rd and
wastewater pipes on Chapel St and
the national U17 record for the
800m in a time of 1:50.46 at
the International Track Meet at
Ngā Puna Wai, a race in which
Prescott set a personal best.
Sails St as well as installing traffic
lights at the Langdons and Greers
Rd intersection.
Papanui Ward city councillor
Victoria Henstock said it is
Last year Wightman also set
irresponsible to proceed with the
the record for the fastest time
investigation into the cycleway.
But neither will run the
800m at the U20 nationals.
Instead they are competing
in the 1500m, with the heats
on Saturday and the final on
Sunday, because it is more of
stacked field.
The junior world
championships will be held in
August in Lima, Peru.
Wightman said it would
mean a lot to represent his
country if he got the chance.
“One of my goals from
when I started running was to
represent New Zealand. So, just
keep pushing away at it and
we’ll just see how it goes.”
Despite both having achieved
the required qualifying time in
the 1500m, they are far from
confirmed to take part.
Seven runners have achieved
the qualifying time, but
Athletics New Zealand can
only select two to compete
internationally.
It makes this weekend’s race
essentially a straight shootout.
“I don’t know if there’s ever
been that many other runners
that have ran that so it’s just
based off whoever gets top-two
at nationals,” said Wightman.
from NZTA for over 95
per cent of its transport projects
so NZTA’s funding decision
“Harewood Ward city councillor
proposed an amendment in the
Long Term Plan for all works on
the cycleway to be halted pending
full disclosure of the updated costs
majority of councillors voting in
favour of continuing this.”
Children
caught
lighting
spate of
fires
• By Chris Barclay
THREE CHILDREN, aged
between nine and 11, have been
identified as responsible for a
spate of fires in Shirley on Sunday.
The most serious incident damaged
a chiller building separate to
O’Shea’s Public House on Marshland
Rd. Fortunately, Fire and
Emergency New Zealand crews
prevented the flames from spreading
to the bar.
“If they’d let
it go I’m sure it
could have kept
going, but the
fire brigade were
there unbelievably
quickly so
the damage was
very limited,” said
O’Shea’s owner
Alan Stroud.
Alan
Stroud
Firefighters had earlier extinguished
a small fire at the old
Hammersley Park School grounds
on Quinns Rd – one of three minor
fires set by the children – and
had barely returned to base before
backtracking to the suburb.
Stroud said the pub’s CCTV
system revealed the children used
a cigarette lighter and an aerosol
can to ignite the fire wood used
to fuel the pub’s barbecue around
10.30pm.
FEIJOA ISN’T ripe for another
adventure just yet. If the
wandering ginger mediumhaired
cat was a bird he’d have
had his wings clipped.
A common sight around
the Christchurch Casino
and the Canterbury Hebrew
Congregation on Durham St
North, Feijoa has been under
virtual house arrest after
being mauled by a dog during
the second of his eight-day
expeditions this year.
Feijoa suffered facial injuries
and internal bleeding after he
went AWOL on February 8 and
on veterinary advice the fouryear-old
has been confined to a
Glenfield Ave unit.
“The vet said he’ll keep expanding
his territory from here,
he will just go off again,” said
Jack Sherwell, who co-owns Feijoa
with fiancée Dayna McInnes.
So Feijoa will not be allowed
out until the house-hunting couple
move, possibly in November.
A former workmate of
Shewell’s recognised the pet
in a sorry state at the corner of
Moorhouse Ave and Barbadoes
St on February 16, a fair distance
from his home near the casino.
“I got a video call and they
said ‘I think this is your cat’. I
called his name and he came and
smooched around the phone,”
said Shewell, who had to also
retrieved Feijoa from a property
in Riccarton on January 8.
On that occasion Feijoa
had latched onto a group of
for the fireworks display at
Fruit and
vege prices
down, cost
of eating
out up
FRUIT AND vege prices have
fallen 9.3 per cent in the past 12
months driven down by tomatoes,
broccoli, and lettuce, new Stats NZ
data shows.
Overall, food price inflation was
just 2.1 per cent for the year to
February – the lowest it has been
since the year to May 2021. Meat,
poultry, and fish prices increased
just 0.2 per cent.
But it was bad news for those
who enjoy eating out, with the cost
of restaurant meals (and readyto-eat-food)
increasing by 6.7 per
cent.
“Going out for a meal or
grabbing takeaways was more
expensive in February 2024,” said
Stats NZ consumer prices manager
Will Bell.
Overall supermarket grocery
food prices increased 3.9 per cent
and non-alcoholic beverage prices
increased 4.3 per cent. However,
on a monthly basis (compared to
January), groceries, as well as meat,
poultry and fish, were down 0.5
per cent.
As well as releasing food price
data today, Stats NZ has also
released its monthly Selected Price
Index, which captures food, accommodation
and travel costs.
The combined Selected Price
Index series offers a monthly read
on price changes for around 45
per cent of New Zealand household
spending. The full Consumer
Price Index is just released quarterly.
The SPI data for February
showed some hefty rises – on an
annual basis – for alcoholic drinks,
up 5 per cent, and tobacco, up 10.4
per cent.
Petrol prices rose 12 per cent
for the year and domestic air
travel was also up 7.7 per cent.
International travel prices fell
2.8 per cent over the year, but
the price of an overseas holiday
almost certainly didn’t, due to
accommodation costs.
83yo battles iwi over possible eviction
• By Daniel Alvey
GREENPARK HUTS: The first huts were built in the early
1900s, and Ngāi Tahu regained ownership of the land in
1998 under the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act.
PHOTOS: DANIEL ALVEY, GEORGE HEARD/NZ HERALD
DON BROWN has a centuriesold
connection with Te Waihora
Lake Ellesmere, well before Ngāi
Tahu arrived in Canterbury
about 1690 – or, as he says, its
“occupation”.
Don traces his whakapapa
back to pre-Ngāi Tahu Ngati
Māmoe and Waitaha, iwi
which used the lake as a valuable
food source 400-500 years ago.
Now Ngāi Tahu, Don – and
the 32 other people who live part
time or permanently at Greenpark
– are likely to face eviction
if they do not vacate their baches
by June 30.
Ngāi Tahu told hut owners
it would not renew their leases
past this year due to inadequate
wastewater systems, compliance
issues and the lack of a reticulated
drinking water supply.
The iwi received the land hut
owners occupy as part of the
Waitangi Tribunal settlement in
1998.
But Don and others say they
won’t go.
“They’ll have to get the bailiffs
in,” he said.
Don said the iwi is going
against its principles.
“They (Ngāi Tahu) have discomfort
in what they are doing.
They know that it is not in their
tribal philosophy.
“If you applied Māori principles
to the whole community it
does not gel, but when you do
it to a tribal member it is even
more vicious.”
Hut owners also have to pay
for the removal of their structures,
something that has also
angered them.
Some say they will have nowhere
to go post June 30, steeling
their resolve to stay.
Ngāi Tahu would not say when
asked by The Star what would
happen if hut residents refused to
go, or if it would file for eviction
in court.
“Our preference is to work
with the leaseholders to ensure a
smooth transition at Greenpark
Huts,” the iwi’s strategy and
environment group head Jacqui
Caine said.
But if residents refuse to leave,
Ngāi Tahu would have to file for
eviction notices with the district
court. If successful, the court
would appoint a bailiff who may
be supported by police to evict
people.
Leaseholders can oppose
eviction notices in court. It is
against the law for Ngāi Tahu to
evict residents themselves.
Secret talks today to thrash out
controversial Church Cnr changes
• By Chris Barclay
CONTENTIOUS plans
to modify the Church
Corner intersection will be
controversially debated behind
closed doors after a community
board stymied city council plans
to implement safety measures.
Tabling a staff-authored report
on the legal implications of the
Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board’s decision
in the public excluded section
of this afternoon’s monthly
meeting astounded Halswell
Ward representative Debbie
Mora.
One of four board members to
last month narrowly vote down
plans to close part of the busy
traffic junction, Mora fears the
report is an attempt to force the
board to revoke their decision.
“It’s very unusual, it’s the first
time in my 11 years (of local
government experience) this has
happened,” she said.
“We’ve had public excluded
meetings before but not after
we’ve already made a decision.”
Mora lodged an official complaint
with city council interim
chief executive Mary Richardson
CRASH ZONE: The aftermath of two cars colliding at Church Corner, a junction the city
council wants to remove as a safety measure by closing off the accident prone section on
Main South Rd. Right: An artist’s impression of the city council plan.
on Tuesday, a stepping stone to
potentially involving the Ombudsman.
“This is a situation where
council staff are pressuring the
board to change their mind,” she
said.
“In my opinion they’ve swayed
the report to coincide with those
that objected to leaving (the intersection)
open. In my opinion
it’s not a balanced review.”
Asked why the matter was
being discussed in secret,
city council head of legal and
democracy services Helen
White told The Star: “The legal
advice in the public excluded
part of the meeting contains
information that is subject to
legal professional privilege
and is withheld pursuant to
section 7 (2) (g) of the LGOIMA
(Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act
1987).
“The Council has considered
the public interest and determined
that it does not outweigh
the grounds to withhold.”
Mora was unconvinced, claiming:
“At this stage I haven’t read
anything that’s legally privileged
and it’s not commercially sensitive.
There’s nothing new.”
White confirmed the final decision
on Church Corner would
be made by the community
board, the matter would not be
transferred to the city council.
City council staff wanted to
remove vehicle access from Main
South Rd through to Riccarton
Rd and left onto Yaldhurst Rd
to simplify the layout and stop
vehicles weaving.
A zebra crossing would also be
added to make it easier for pedestrians
to cross Yaldhurst Rd.
Before the community board
voted by a 4-3 margin to reject
the changes, city council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said there had been 81
crashes at the Main South Rd-
Yaldhurst Rd intersection over
the past decade.
The majority (70) of the
crashes involved vehicles
turning right from Main South
Rd and colliding with vehicles
on Riccarton Rd en route to
Yaldhurst.
Two people, including a cyclist,
suffered serious injuries in the
most dangerous incidents.
Mark Peters (Hornby), Henk
Buunk (Hornby) and then
board chair Helen Broughton
(Riccarton) also voted against
the changes.
Tyla Harrison-Hunt (Riccarton),
Andrei Moore (Halswell)
and Marie Pollisco (Halswell)
were in favour while Sarah
Brunton (Hornby) abstained and
Gamal Fouda (Riccarton) was
absent.
Before making their decision
the board received 304 public
submissions with 54 in favour of
the modifications; 71 expressed
concerns.
you think of the proposed
Fly-tipping costs ratepayers
NEWS 7
In Brief
more than $1 million a year
Hot-spots
revealed
CHRISTCHURCH’S chronic
locations for illegal rubbish
dumping on city streets have
been revealed, as combating
‘fly-tipping’ cost ratepayers more
than $1 million.
The city council said 22,000
jobs relating to fly-tipping were
logged between January 2023
and last month with the sevenfigure
price tag only covering
dumping costs, not the cost of
staff and contractors inspecting
and clearing affected areas.
Residential areas in the
Central Ward were hardest hit
with Cashel St leading the cost
breakdown on $43,394.71.
Hereford St ($39,196.17),
Worcester St ($38,993.17),
Gloucester St ($26,531.57) and
Armagh St ($22,413.64) rounded
out the top-five.
Aldershot St ($17,279.15) was
the most expensive location in
the Burwood Ward; Emmett
rubbish-prone footpaths in the
Innes Ward.
City streets maintenance manager
Steve Guy said those figures
reflected the size of the problem
and how unfair it is on those doing
the right thing, as ratepayers
foot the bill.
“Fixing our roads and footpaths
is a high priority for the
council and for our residents but
the money we spend on picking
up other people’s rubbish
reduces our ability to repair the
roads and footpaths residents
identified in the satisfaction
surveys,” he said.
Guy said city council staff
were working on ways to minimise
fly-tipping. CCTV cameras
have been purchased with locations
for the surveillance now
under consideration.
“We’re working closely with
community boards and elected
members to identify, target
and clear up these hot-spots
at a grassroots level which has
proved incredibly useful,” he
said.
“We’re liaising with the
enforcement and legal teams at
council to establish a process for
prosecuting dumpers.”
Guy said the best solution was
for people to use existing waste
management options.
“The council provides
fantastic red bin service, and
the EcoDrop Transfer Station is
open for any bigger loads,” he
said.
Police name victim of
City Mission attack
The man allegedly murdered
at Christchurch’s City Mission
on Hereford St at the weekend
was 22-year-old Jordan Morris.
Police were called to the
emergency night shelter around
10pm on Sunday following
reports of a stabbing. Morris
died at the scene. A 67-year-old
man was charged with murder
and was remanded in custody
on Monday until his next
appearance in the High Court
at Christchurch on April 12.
Investigation into Port
Hills fire ongoing
Police are continuing to
investigate the Port Hills fire
after specialist staff and Fire
and Emergency New Zealand
investigators scoured the burntout
landscape in an unsuccessful
bid to determine the cause of
the fire, which scorched 650 ha
from February 14. Police would
not confirm whether two people
spoken to after they were seen
walking on a track before the
fire broke out have been cleared.
In a statement, police said a
detailed scene examination had
been completed and inquiries
were continuing.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Deadline looms for hut residents:
• By Daniel Alvey
FOR GREENPARK Huts
resident Don Brown, his bach
is much more than a building.
It provides him with a vital
connection to Te Waihora Lake
Ellesmere.
Like all residents the huts, Don
has just over three months to
leave. He uses as his hut as a base
for fishing.
In 2020, landowners, Ngāi
Tahu delivered the news to hut
owners that beyond June 30 this
year, their leases would not be
renewed.
The first buildings were
built at Greenpark Huts in the
early 1900s. Ngāi Tahu gained
ownership of the land from the
Crown in 1998 as part of its
Treaty of Waitangi settlement.
Greenpark Huts is one of three
lakeside settlements soon to be
wiped off the map. Upper Selwyn
Huts and Lower Selwyn Huts
are also facing a finite future due
to similar issues with climate
change and wastewater.
Don said he would not be
leaving.
“They’ll have to get the bailiffs
in,” Don said.
If residents refuse to leave,
Ngāi Tahu would have to file
an eviction notice with the
Christchurch District Court. If
successful, the court will appoint
a bailiff who may be supported
by police. It is against the law
for Ngāi Tahu to evict residents
themselves.
Don said Ngāi Tahu knows it
is doing something wrong by its
principles.
“They (Ngāi Tahu) have
discomfort in what they are
doing. They know that it is not in
their tribal philosophy.
“They know that in their
heart that it is not appropriate
behaviour and to hold that up
to other iwi it would become
embarrassing.
“If you applied Māori principles
to the whole community it
does not gel, but when you do
it to a tribal member it is even
more vicious.”
Even with little time left, Don
is still hoping Ngāi Tahu will
change its mind.
WAITING: Greenpark Huts is one of three settlements on
the shores of Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere that will soon be
wiped off the map. Resident Don Brown of Ngāi Tahu
has a long-standing connection with the area.
“It came as a bit of shock,
and since then there have been
communications backwards and
forwards, but their (Ngāi Tahu’s)
position hasn’t changed, I’m
hoping it will.
“Some of the advice they made
the decision on has become
dated in light of new science,”
Don said.
PHOTOS: DANIEL ALVEY
Despite being Ngāi Tahu, Don
is not getting special treatment
and is facing the same fate as
the other 32 hut owners. All
residents must leave by June 30
and remove all buildings at their
own expense by September 30.
He grew up in Lincoln and
would frequently visit the hut,
which was owned by his father,
since about 1950.
In the early days, he would
come out on horse and cart.
“The road was abysmal,” Don
recalls.
His current hut has been
on the site for about 30 years
after the original building was
condemned by the council due to
its condition.
Don said his whakapapa and
association with the lake goes
back before Ngāi Tahu arrived
in about 1690 to the early iwi
Ngāti Māmoe and before that
Waitaha, about 400-500 years
ago.
“Our family predates the Ngāi
Tahu occupation of this part of
Canterbury,” Don said.
Ngāi Tahu says the reasons for
the eviction include the quality
of drinking water, the impending
risk from climate change
and unconsented wastewater
systems.
Since the iwi’s tribunal settlement,
Don has felt isolated from
the community for being Ngāi
Tahu.
“There is racism and a disconnect.”
He said after Ngāi Tahu took
over the land, he was nominated
to be a spokesperson on behalf
of the community to the iwi, but
no-one seconded him.
‘They’ll have to get the bailiffs in’
“There has been an undercurrent
ever since.”
Don said it is just now dawning
on some there is unlikely to be a
change in position by Ngāi Tahu.
“As reality bites in and it’s not
just a bad dream, I think now the
inevitability is being taken into
account by the community and
they are definitely not comfortable
with it.”
“Talk about putting in security
fences once the eviction date
takes hold, that’s quite confrontational
and reopened a wound of
two polarised positions.”
Don said Ngāi Tahu could have
handled the communications
with residents better.
“It was badly handled by Ngāi
Tahu. Better processes could have
been implemented.’’
Since Ngāi Tahu took over in
1998, it has always been known
hut owners would have to pay for
the removal of buildings when
the time came.
On the other side of the
settlement is Peter Scarrott who
has been coming to the huts since
his father bought a hut in 1952,
and for about 30 years he has
lived in his hut.
“It’s old and I love it the way it
is.”
Every Tuesday, Peter cooks
his daughter-in-law Sarah a big
lunch on the coal range which
she takes home to feed her
MEMORIES: Peter Scarrott has lived at Greenpark Huts for more than 30 years, daughter in law Sarah also owns a bach.
Right, Chris Muir and Rose Roberts reminisce over their family’s memories of coming to the huts for holidays.
family who also have a bach at
Greenpark Huts but don’t live
there permanently.
Peter said there is a lot of stress
among the residents, especially
for ones like him who call it
home and have little options on
where to go.
“A lot of people have got a lot to
lose. I’ve got nowhere to go. I’m
74 – where am I going to live? I’m
on a pension.
“My pension won’t even cover
rent.”
Peter said he is unlikely to
demolish his hut because he can’t
afford it.
“How come the Government
can give away Crown land to a
private enterprise? This bit of
land has nothing to do with the
lake.”
Sarah said Ngāi Tahu aren’t
thinking about the people.
“It’s so unfair because it’s like
they don’t have a heart and they
are not actually thinking about
the people.”
Peter said Ngāi Tahu’s reasons
about sewage and water quality
do not stack up.
“Sewage which comes off the
land is nothing compared to
neighbouring farms.”
Peter said all waste is stored
in septic tanks and then trucked
away.
Chris Muir owns a hut with his
nephews and was visiting from
the Gold Coast to get some of the
items stored in his hut.
The hut has been in his family
for 59 years after his dad bought
it for £50.
“It’s a disgrace. We could have
sold our place four years ago and
might have got between $60-
$80,000.
“When they said there were
no more leases to be renewed, it
dropped from that to zero.
“I’m not pulling it down and
I’m not paying a cent to pull it
down.”
Over the years, the hut has been
extended with the addition of a
kitchen and shower.
Like Peter’s hut, all cooking is
done on a coal range.
Chris said he would use the
hut as a getaway home to come
and fish and shoot.
“As kids, we would come out
here during the school holidays.
Mum and dad would bring us
out and we’d spend two weeks
running around shooting air
rifles and whatever.”
Chris said since 2020, little
has changed with the huts apart
from their condition.
“They’ve got a lot rougher
because people think what’s the
point it painting the outside or
keeping it neat and tidy.”
NEW ZEALAND’S first
surfboard library is putting out
the call for your munted old
board.
The Goat Shed – a non-profit
run by volunteers in Sumner –
reshapes and fixes the boards so
they are good as new.
Surfers with any level of experience
are then allowed to borrow
the boards for free, as long as they
are returned.
In a converted backyard garage,
secured with a rusted corrugated
iron door, The Goat Shed is
dusted with sand, fibreglass and
surfboard wax.
Boards of all shapes, sizes and
colours fill the shed, along with
the musty smell of damp wetsuits.
“One of the biggest missions
from the surfboard library, is
actually just to bring more stoke
into surfing. Stop surfing, just
enjoy, have fun instead of creating
a competition,” says co-founder
Lucas Sampaio.
Sampaio and Carlos Alonso
built the library during the 2020
lockdown, and later opened it up
to their community in Sumner.
With an average cost of $1000-
$1500, most boards are placed in
cardboard boxes before they are
sold, so people do not have the
opportunity to feel their shape
first.
But The Goat Shed offers a
range of different boards so
surfers can try before they buy,
which Sampaio said was a huge
help to his customers.
“Do you need an extra board for
bigger waves? Just come and grab
one for the week. Do you need
a board just for small waves or a
longboard? Come and grab one.
“There are different styles of
surfing that maybe most people
can’t try. They need to buy one, or
buy five different boards to experience
five different waves or five
different styles.”
Sustainability was also important
to Sampaio and the team.
“The surf industry is built like
any other big industry corporation
– products break, they go to
the rubbish and nobody repairs
them.
“But the way we’re doing it,
we’re actually building stronger
surfboards, which hopefully any
individual can use and we repair
them as well.”
The Sumner Community
Residents Association helped the
project to get off the ground with
financial support. However, the
majority of funding has come
from Sampaio and Alonso’s own
pockets.
But Sampaio said the expense
was worth it.
“I think every town in New
Zealand deserves a surfboard
library. There is a lot of people
who don’t have the capacity to
have surfboards and ability to go
in the water.
“It’s definitely something
anybody benefits from, mentally
and physically, the water washes
everything away.
“There are a lot of people who
possibly would like to try this
sport, which is an amazing way to
get with nature, and they can’t.”
The Goat Shed also offers custom
board shaping and surfboard
repairs for a small donation.
Liam Coleman volunteers his
time to shape boards at the shed,
which he reckoned was bringing
the surfing community closer
together.
“The thing I see for The Goat
Shed is about bringing in more
of the community – the kids, the
surf team, the local surfers - into
this space.”
The shed also offered potential
board shapers an opportunity to
learn the craft.
“It’s all about the community
side of engaging people, giving
them a hobby, giving them
something to do.”
Surfing New Zealand chief
executive Ben Kennings said surf
breaks across the country have
never been busier and libraries
like The Goat Shed allowed people
of different demographics to
be able to surf.
“Anytime you can upcycle a
surfboard or pass it down to a
younger surfer and get it re-used
is an awesome initiative, one for
the environment and two, just to
provide equipment.
“Something which can be
quite expensive to someone can
then give surfing a go at a much
cheaper price or free if its a surfboard
library.”
The Goat Shed is open
Wednesdays and Thursdays
from 4-6pm and anyone with a
dusty old board under the house
is invited to bring it along, where
it can be restored and given a
second life.
A WELL-KNOWN house
rescued from the rubble of the
February 2011 quake, which
became an architectural star
of TV’s Grand Designs New
Zealand has been snapped up for
$3.6 million – almost $800,000
above its RV.
The Queen Anne-style villa,
on Bluff Lane, in Gibbston,
Queenstown-Lakes, was one of
the houses profiled in the 2017
season of the show.
Previous owners Jamie
and Melissa McMurtrie had
rescued the “Turret House” and
transported it more than 400km
to its current location.
They spent a year putting
the house back together and
bringing it up scratch, and sold it
in 2018 for $2.141 million.
The five-bedroom property
was listed for sale in November
last year, with New Zealand
Sotheby’s International Realty
agent Ben Terry. It sold three
months later for $3.6m.
The 400sqm home sits on one
hectare in Gibbston Valley and
has a 2021 RV of $2.82m.
Terry’s listing for the home
highlighted its beautifullyrestored
features. “The house
retains a huge amount of the
original detail including the
beautiful Carrera ceilings, wood
panelling, fireplace, mosaic tiles,
native timber flooring and the
grand staircase,” the listing ad on
OneRoof said.
“With impressive stud height
throughout, the four double
bedrooms have a real sense
of space and light including
the master with its very own
en-suite, walk-in wardrobe and
bespoke turret. The property
enjoys two additional period
style bathrooms.”
Terry said the vendors didn’t
know the villa had been on
Grand Designs when they
bought it in 2018. “They were just
in town and wanted a holiday
house here. The saw the house,
fell in love with it and two
months later they were living
in Gibbston Valley,” he told
OneRoof in November.
Quake ‘Turret House’ fetches big money
LOCATION, LOCATION: The two-storey villa on in Gibbston, Queenstown, which appeared
on the TV show Grand Designs NZ, hosted by Chris Moller, in its 2017 season, was snapped
up in February. Previous owners Jamie and Melissa McMurtrie rescued the house from
the Christchurch quake and transported it more than 400km to its current location.
The couple turned a onebedroom
cottage next to the
main residence into a holiday
home escape.
The McMurtries gave up
the house in 2018 after having
their second child. As detailed
in their episode of Grand
Designs New Zealand, they
faced huge challenges bringing
their property dreams to life,
including transporting the house
in pieces through some narrow
twisty roads. They also struggled
to get council consents over the
height of the roof and turret, with
the both lowered to get approval.
Frenchwoman reunites with spinal
unit carers 52 years after shock crash
Dominique Vallette’s ambitious goal of tracking
down Cantabrians who nursed her back to
health after she suffered spinal injuries in a car
accident in 1972 was fulfilled last week after her
appeal was publicised by The Star in January.
Chris Barclay witnessed an emotional reunion at
Burwood Hospital
MORE THAN half a century
elapsed, but Dominique Vallette
ultimately experienced the
South Island scenic destinations
on her itinerary after leaving
Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks
during the winter of 1972.
Then an 18-year-old on a
study trip from her temporary
home in New Caledonia, the
Frenchwoman’s travel plans went
awry when the Morris Mini
she was driving slid off a gravel
bend on the Haast Pass towards
Wanaka and plunged 60 metres
down a bank.
She was freed from the
wreckage and then endured
a watchful two-day trip to
Christchurch Hospital where she
spent three months in traction
with spinal injuries.
Vallette returned to New
Zealand last month for a sixweek
trip which enabled her
to take in Wanaka, Glenorchy,
Kinloch, Queenstown,
Arrowtown, Doubtful Sound,
Twizel and Aoraki Mt Cook.
“I’m glad I’ve seen them this
time, finally,” she said.
Yet Vallette’s favourite
recollection, the sight she
coveted above all others, was
witnessed inside the spinal unit
at Burwood Hospital.
Seeing the smiling faces of a
surgeon and staff who nursed
her in ward 13B, plus a woman
whose family accommodated
Vallette during convalescence,
was the truly unforgettable
memory.
“This is a celebration I’ve been
thinking of for many years. The
main purpose of the trip was to
come back to New Zealand to
try and find the kind
and talented people
without whom I
would never have
had a normal
life,” she said.
“There was
a team of
kindness and love around me,
really a family, and I never forgot
that.”
Her plan for a reunion reached
fruition last Thursday when she
hosted a gathering with surgeon
Dr Allan Bean, ward sister
Beth Spiers, nurse Sue Ryan
(née Osborne) and Rosemary
Kraushaar (née Doherty).
Once released from hospital,
she stayed with the Doherty
family, who learned of her plight
because a relative, amateur
(ham) radio operator Arnold
Dacombe, had contacted
Valette’s parents in Noumea
after the accident.
“There was the physical part of
MUSICAL DUO: Student nurse Sue Ryan (née Osborne)
and Vallette played music to raise the Frenchwoman’s
spirits.
it (hospital treatment) and for
the mental and spiritual part
of it I was always kept in very
high spirits by the Dohertys.
They were so kind and
patient,” she said.
While Rosemary was at
the function, her mother
Helen, now aged 93, also met
Vallette last week.
Vallette presented
her Canterbury
family with a
special
souvenir mug.
The same design, devised
by one of her three sons, was
framed and presented to the
unit, which relocated from
Christchurch Hospital in 1979.
“The fern is a symbol for New
Zealand, and it also looks like a
spine,” Vallette explained.
“It is also like a staircase
because I was on my way to
recovery, on my way up to
having a good life.”
The numbers represented the
year of the crash, the reunion
and 52 years of gratitude.
Before the afternoon tea Vallette
had a private consultation
with Bean, a junior member of
her treatment team.
“She is lucky she broke the
second lumbar vertebrae (L2)
rather than the first,” he said,
explaining damage to the L2
would not drastically impact on
the spinal cord.
Vallette suffered severe
bruising and nerve damage; she
was able to walk from hospital
with only a back brace for
support after avoiding life as a
paraplegic by millimetres.
“She’s very lucky it was below
L1. When it’s damaged it usually
crushes the spinal cord and she’d
probably be in a wheelchair.”
Now 90, still sharp and
living in a Wigram retirement
complex, Bean was told about
Vallette’s trip by another
resident.
A friend also alerted Ryan, a
student nurse whose rotation
coincided with Vallette’s
treatment.
“It was very confronting
(starting in the unit). I was quite
traumatised for the first week,
seeing these lovely
young people
coming into
the ward and
realising
what their
future was
going to be,”
she said.
So
Vallette’s positivity and
resilience was a welcome coping
mechanism.
“She was a perfect patient,
she was so relaxed. She was not
afraid of what might happen.
“We had a lovely rapport with
each other. It was a busy ward
so often I’d go after my shift and
spend time with her.
“I played a little bit of guitar
in those days so we’d play Cat
Stevens, Joni Mitchell, all those
songs.”
When, after three months
in traction, Vallette felt a
big toe twitch, doctors and
physiotherapists thought the
movement was a figment of a
hopeful imagination.
However, Ryan saw the wiggle
with her own eyes.
“It was so exciting, I could see
it. It proved the bruising and the
nerves were healing,” she said.
Ryan, who lives in Weedons,
lost touch after Vallette was
Vallette (top right)
reunited with
Sue Ryan (top
left), Rosemary
Kraushaar (front
left) and Beth
Spiers.
discharged so the get-together
was a pleasant surprise.
“I’m just thrilled. Dominique
stayed over the other night. We
just reminisced about old times.
We can’t believe 50 years have
gone by in a flash.”
Vallette, who turns 70 on May
1, started her trip in Auckland,
reached Wellington in two
days and then took the ferry
to Picton, her journey south
deliberately featuring another
drive through Haast Pass.
Although the road has been
modified since her accident,
Vallette easily identified her
crash scene.
“I found the precise place
where I left the road. It’s the
only place where there is that
kind of curve, not far from the
Makarora River,” she said.
There was no parking bay
in the vicinity so Vallette
was unable to stop to take a
photograph, though the bend is
clearly etched in her mind.
“I was driving and I
recognised it straight away, it
was near the end of the Haast
Pass. I think there were two
Americans who met their deaths
also in that precise place a few
years ago. The road is much
better now,” she said.
“It’s a sealed road which has
been widened and there’s a
railing on the ravine side.”
Vallette admitted there was
some anxiety as she headed
down the pass.
“I was quite anxious at first but
when I saw it (the crash scene) I
didn’t even feel a pang.
“I thought: ‘Well at least the
road is very secure now, it won’t
happen again’.”

Drone to search hill for rockfall risk
• By Dylan Smits
A DRONE will survey parts of
Clifton Hill to ensure there is no
danger of rockfall.
It comes after a boulder fell
down the hillside, crashing
several barriers through Mulgans
Track.
It is unknown whether anyone
was walking the track at the time
of the rockfall.
The city council says it was an
isolated incident.
A spokesperson said the geotechnical
team believe the rock
was likely rubble dislodged by
the 2011 earthquakes which got
caught in vegetation.
Then more recently the vegetation
may have died, causing the
rock to fall.
“Our geotechnical engineer has
had a thorough ground investigation
and concluded that this was
a blue sky event, which is not
expected to repeat as there is no
significant source material above
the track,” said the spokesperson.
The engineer has recommended
a drone survey be carried
out later this week to remove
any lingering uncertainty for the
public.
Mt Pleasant resident John
Atkins walks the track during
weekdays with his men’s walking
group.
“It could have been disastrous
TUMBLING: The boulder fell from the top of Mulgans Track to the bottom, taking out
several fences along the way. Users of the track want the temporary fencing replaced soon.
if someone was there. You can see
what it did to the fences,” he said.
He believes the drone survey is
a good idea.
“Anything to keep the track
safe and open. After all, we use it
a lot.”
Redcliffs resident and
Coastguard Sumner president
Blair Quane also regularly walks
the track and finds it concerning a
sizeable boulder fell down.
“The barriers also need to be
fixed. There’s temporary fencing
there, but there’s pretty big dropoffs
in those gaps.”
Temporary fencing has been put
in where the rock broke through.
The city council spokesperson
said any future risk to walkers is
unlikely.
This type of rockfall caused
by decayed vegetation has
been labelled as “extremely
uncommon.”
However the spokesperson
reminded walkers “there is
always a small risk of rockfall
when walking below rock
outcrops, and people should be
alert to this.”
The boulder fell from below
the fence line of 55 Kinsey Tce,
just above the track, said the
spokesperson.
The rockfall is believed to have
occurred on February 5 when
it was first reported to the city
council, said the spokesperson.
As long as it’s beneficial to China-
New Zealand relations
He Ying
Consul General
of the People’s
Republic of
China in
Christchurch
Time flies. It has been almost two years since
I took my role as the Consul General of the
People’s Republic of China in Christchurch.
Here, I’d like to share some of my fond
memories and exciting work experiences of the
past two years.
The South Island is known for its welcoming
people and picturesque landscapes, which
leave me with deep impressions. Over the past
two years, my colleagues and I have traveled
around the whole island. We were glad to learn
that the fruits of cooperation between China
and New Zealand have benefited all walks of life
here. The passion and commitment of the local
community to China-New Zealand friendship
and cooperation make me deeply aware that
this relationship has brought tangible benefits
to both countries and peoples, thus filled me
and my colleagues with a strong sense of
responsibility for our work.
At the end of last year, China convened the
Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign
Affairs and Annual Work Conference for Envoys
to Foreign Countries. I went back to China for
the meeting, from which I learned a lot. The two
conferences presented a systematic review
of the historic achievements and valuable
experience of China’s diplomatic practice in
the new era and made comprehensive plans
for China’s diplomacy for the present and
coming periods. To put it simply, China calls
for an equal and orderly multipolar world and
a universally beneficial and inclusive economic
globalization. The core objective of China’s
diplomacy is to build a community with a
shared future for mankind, which is an open,
inclusive, clean and beautiful one, with lasting
peace, universal security and shared prosperity
among all countries.
China and New Zealand are both advocates and
beneficiaries of multilateralism and free trade.
Over the past 50 years since the establishment
of our diplomatic relations, the relationship
between China and New Zealand has achieved
a number of “firsts”, bringing benefits to
the people of the two countries and making
important contributions to regional
peace, stability and prosperity. We
look forward to working with friends
from all walks of life in New Zealand
to further deepen our cooperation in
various fields, to better benefit the
people of the two countries, and to
add more certainty to each other and
the steady development of the world.
Despite the heavy responsibilities,
I rarely feel tired, as my work has
blessed me with unparalleled
sense of achievement. As Consul
General, my role is to tell China’s
story to New Zealand, to promote
mutual understanding between our
two peoples, and to build bridge
for exchanges and cooperation
between the South Island and
various parts of China. As long as
something is beneficial to China-New
Zealand friendship, regardless of its
significance, I am more than willing
to devote my time and energy to
doing it.
The long-standing friendship
between China and New Zealand
originated from the South Island. Starting from
Appo Hocton (Chinese name: Heting Huang),
the first Chinese to New Zealand, to early gold
miners in Otago and the West Coast, to Rewi
Alley coming all the way from Canterbury to
China, the stories between our peoples have
long been told and remembered on both sides.
Now, the Chinese community living in the
South Island integrates into the local society
and contributes to New Zealand’s economic
development and multiculturalism, building a
good image of the Chinese community. I am so
proud of it.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic plaguing us for
more than three years was behind us, China-
New Zealand exchanges and cooperation in
various fields have resumed rapidly. Sixteen
pairs of sister cities renewed close contact
with each other. Universities and polytechnics
in China and the South Island paid frequent
visits to each other. A large number of Chinese
tourists and international students have been
back to the South Island.
During the Spring Festival of the Year of the
Dragon, the “2024 Happy Chinese New Year”
event was held in Hagley Park, attracting more
than 60,000 people in three days.
Recently our Consulate General hosted the
“Oriental Gala” event, combining intangible
cultural heritage of Chinese lacquer art with
traditional folk activities, which was very
popular among participants. My colleagues
and I were delighted to see people enjoying the
lanterns and fireworks, cultural performances
and Chinese folklore activities, deeply
immersed in China’s elegant and profound
traditional culture. As Consulate General,
the safety of Chinese tourists, international
students and overseas Chinese in New Zealand
always concern us. Here, I would like to remind
our overseas Chinese nationals once again to
abide by local laws and regulations, respect
local cultures and customs and ensure our
personal and property safety.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of
President Xi Jinping’s visit to New Zealand and
the establishment of the China-New Zealand
Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which
is another important year in two countries’
bilateral relations. The natural beauty of
the South Island has always been much
appreciated by the Chinese tourists, and we
would also like to introduce the famous sights
and beautiful scenery of different parts of China
to the people in the South Island. We welcome
more kiwis to go to China and have a look. The
Consulate General will continue to do our best
to promote cooperation between the South
Island and various parts of China in the areas of
sister cities, economy, culture, education and
other fields. We will work together to promote
the bilateral relationship to a higher level this
year, and better benefit the peoples of both
countries.
Debate over parole stirs up strong
Readers respond to
last week’s question
if a convicted killer
should be eventually
paroled if they refuse
to say where the body
is. It related to the life
sentence with a non
parole period of 17
years handed down to
David Benbow, who
was found guilty of
murdering his long
time friend Michael
McGrath. Grath’s body
has never been found
I support a ‘no body, no parole’
law.
David Benbow has been found
guilty of murder.
The gun is ‘missing’ as of the
time of Michael’s death. If David
is innocent he would be able
to produce his gun. Michael’s
body and the gun have not been
located.
If a person convicted of murder
will not disclose the location
of the body and the weapon, to
provide closure for the family
and the police, then the murderer
is not safe or deserving of
parole and possible release.
– Linda Mears
I read with interest your front
page prompt, inviting people to
GUILTY: David Benbow in the High Court at Christchurch.
provide their opinion on a ‘no
body, no parole’ discussion.
While I have not followed the
case that has triggered the current
discussion, I do have some
general thoughts on the idea.
My immediate thought is that
a convicted murderer who does
not disclose the whereabouts
of their victims body is failing
to show any remorse for their
actions.
Remorse is one of the many
things a judge takes into account
in sentencing.
Remorse is also an indication
of risk of re-offending.
I would suggest that a convicted
murderer who has a strong
sense of entitlement to murder
people, would be a risk to the
general public if released earlier
than the end of their sentence in
its entirety.
I believe there should
be allowances made for
rehabilitation, which may be
evidenced in having completed
a number of psychologist
designed programmes run in the
prisons, leading to the revelation
of the whereabouts of the
victim’s body.
Given the above information,
I agree with the ‘no body, no parole’
position on the discussion.
– Maria Cavanagh
No body, no parole presupposes
Mr Benbow actually
knows where the body is.
Seems to me has was convicted
largely on circumstantial
evidence.
He might be innocent.
In a case with no body, no
weapon and based on circumstantial
evidence, 17 years feels
unduly harsh.
– Mel Bonner
Should convicted murderers
be paroled if they refuse to say
where they hid the body?”
That is a flawed question.
Convicted does not always
equate to guilt.
If Benbow is innocent, he cannot
say where the body is and is
kept locked up.
He was found guilty on
circumstantial evidence which
pretty much means the police/
prosecution did not prove their
case and a (dumb) jury brought
into it.
I strongly suspect Benbow is
innocent.
How did the jury get it wrong?
– Brian Johnston
The first obvious question is
why would David Benbow confess
to where the body of Michael
McGrath is, when he has consistently
denied he killed him.
Isn’t that blatantly obvious?
Additionally the Sam
Sherwood texts raise even
more questions as when the
prosecution tries to string
tenuous circumstantial points
together.
LETTERS 23
feelings for readers
FENZ guidance
The greater problem here as in
other cases , is how can a person
be declared guilty of murder
when there is no body and no
forensic evidence?
– Hessel Van Wieren
No body, no parole sounds
fair – but what if the person
convicted is innocent and can’t
reveal the location? If there was
no doubt about the conviction,
sure, but how many convictions
are 100 per cent certain
especially those where the body
is missing.
– Lindsay Sandford
There is a fundamental error
undermining current public
safety policy development.
The error is that we continue
to weigh the offender’s rights
significantly above those of victims.
Flowing from this error are
all sorts of failures. One example
being ankle bracelet policy.
Whereby seriously dangerous
offenders get to commit literally
thousands of further serious
offences while awaiting trails for
their existing offending. Total
disregard for both the existing
victims and the potential future
victims of that offender’s future
offending.
Very significant policy changes
arise if the rights of victims
and potential future victims are
elevated significantly above the
soft-cock concerns of predator/
offender rights.
Adopting such an approach
would quickly lead to the “no
body, no parole” policy as being
obvious.
Parole itself would probably
go, as the underlying policy
process for parole has the effect
of revictimising all the innocent
parties each couple of years. All
for what: to focus on cost cutting
to get said offender out again.
– Dave Lawry
Yes, I believe there should be
no parole for offenders who do
not give up the whereabouts of
their victims.
I have never been in that
position of having anyone close
to me murdered and could not
even imagine how that would
feel, but to be able to bury your
family member would be of
some comfort, I am sure.
It would stop you wondering
where they are and thinking of
them all alone. Maybe without
having the body of your loved
one, you may keep having false
hope that they will return.
Definitely no parole.
– Lynn Rata
I haven’t followed the case very
closely, but it seems strange that
someone is convicted of murder
if there is no body and no murder
weapon.
The sentence seems appropriate
if murder is proved – quite
the contrast to the man who
killed in broad daylight and got
two years home detention.
Perhaps our justice system is
really just a lottery?
– Mark Buckle
Definitely no body no parole
because the victims family never
get parole from their heartbreak.
It is never ending for them.
– Doreen Wanhalla
Totally support this approach.
What a abhorrent thing to
do to a family. I hope there
is enough support for this to
change the legislation. Perhaps
we could petition for change.
– Candy Gillies
I’m not sure we shouldn’t have
an American-style life
imprisonment which means
for the whole remainder of the
killer’s life with no possibility of
parole.
If we must have parole, it
should certainly be conditional
on the killer revealing the
whereabouts of the body.
– Michael J. Brathwaite
draws criticism
WE ARE appalled by Fire and
Emergency New Zealand’s
advice regarding egress from
the second storey of a building
when the area below is on
fire, (The Star March 7, New
Brighton Rd fire).
There is not one escape route,
let alone the three strategies
FENZ advises, unless the
apartment has an upstairs
balcony from which one might
dangle. Most don’t.
Given the (standard) two
bedrooms are located either
side of the stairwell up which
the fire will race, we assume
FENZ means there should be a
fire extinguisher, glass breaking
hatchet, and a tool to disarm
the limiting window stays,
through which a rope ladder
may be thrown, after being tied
to something suitably strong, in
each room.
All this could be nigh
impossible to achieve if light
has been disabled, and one is
having to “keep low” to get air.
It might sound like a Mickey
Mouse cartoon if it weren’t so
deadly serious.
We feel this issue is of much
greater concern, in terms of
personal and community safety,
than the leaky home problem,
which although costly and
inconvenient has been largely
rectified.
It takes a village, winning
side’s co-captain says
• By Sam Coughlan
TESSA METUATINI’S return
to the diamond couldn’t have
come at a better time for her
sporting family – following the
expansion of her own.
Metuatini celebrated the birth
of her second child, son Nikau, in
November and made her return
to softball only 10 weeks later.
On Sunday, she helped the
PCU Angels come back to
win their first national club
title in 21 years when they beat
Waitakere in the final, 4-3, at
Dynasty Ballpark.
PCU were down 3-0 at one
stage – facing their second final
loss in a row after missing out
last year against Otahuhu –
before a team comeback finished
off by catcher Manaia Makiri,
who scored a two-RBI hit to give
PCU the win.
PCU’s men’s side narrowly
missed out on making it a double
for the club, losing 5-3 to the
Mt Auckland Ramblers in the
men’s final on the same day in
Lower Hutt.
PCU were the last club to win
both national titles, completing
the feat in 2001.
Metuatini said returning to
play after giving birth for the
second time was challenging
– but she had a lot of support
around her.
“They say takes a village (to
raise a child), and I’m just very
fortunate to have my PCU village
around me to help me raise
my kids as well.
“They (the kids) love my teammates,
they love my coaching
staff. And when I’m on the
diamond, I know my kids are
taken care of if they need anything,
like if they’re hungry, if
they need the toilet, they just do
everything.”
• By Sam Coughlan
A SECOND Christchurch Metro
two-day title in as many years
is within touching distance for
Burnside West Uni, ahead of the
final round of the season starting
on Saturday.
They come into the round on
106.9 competition points, clear of
Lancaster Park in second on 90.
The points mean that, barring
a calamitous loss against Sydenham
for Burnside and a huge win
for Park in their match against
East Shirley, Burnside will be
champions again.
Captain Matt Hay said going
back-to-back was an exciting
prospect.
BIGGEST FAN: Tessa Metuatini’s four-month-old son
Nikau was in the dug-out when she won the national
club championship with PCU. Below – Metuatini (right)
and fellow PCU co-captain Stella Jorgenson speaking
after the win.
PHOTO: ANTHEA STRINGER
Softball runs heavily in Metuatini’s
family – her father Kiria
Metuatini coached the Angels
when she was younger, and
older sisters Alysha and Aimee
played too.
“I’ve always played for my dad,
and I grew up at the ballpark
watching my sisters play, so
yeah, it was a huge family affair,”
she said.
Her partner Andrew Verheul
played for PCU’s men’s team
until last year as well.
“He (Verheul) actually coaches
our daughter’s (six-year-old
Aleigh) tee-ball team now. So,
“We’ve worked really hard to
put ourselves in this situation.
“We had a really good preseason
and then we’ve won five
out of six outright and narrowly
missed out against Lancaster
Park on doing that, so we’re in a
good position.”
Having already won the
one-day competition, a second
trophy this season would be rare
for Burnside – they last won the
double in 1992.
Hay said doing it again would
mean a lot to the club.
“I know it’d be huge for the
playing group, but there’s a lot of
people at the club that put a lot of
work in behind the scenes.
“I think it would be really rewarding
and a massive achievement
for everyone involved in
the club.”
Standing in their way is Sydenham,
who are unbeaten but have
only won three games outright.
Lancaster Park will host sixthplaced
East Shirley at St Albans
Park and will be looking for a
dominant win to give them as
great a chance as possible of
overhauling Burnside.
Also on Saturday Old Boys
host Heathcote at Elmwood
Park, while bottom two
Merivale-Papanui and St Albans
do battle at Edgar MacIntosh
Park.
we can give back in that
way . . . watching her,” said
Metuatini.
“For us as parents, for our kids
to see me playing softball, it’s really
cool, and it’s a highlight for
her, and now that’s something
that she wants to do as well.
“So it is really cool to be able
to pass that down.”
Her team-mates are like
family as well – in fact Mikayla
Werahiko, normally a Sydenham
player but who represented
PCU at nationals, is the godmother
of both of Metuatini’s
children.
Metuatini says her children
inspire her when she’s playing.
“After we won (national
championships), looking at the
dugout, and seeing my daughter
run around with my other
teammates’ kids, and looking
in the stands and seeing my
partner and my son, like, it was
a real wholesome feeling, and
kind of why I do what I do.
“I want to make sure my kids
know that when they grow up,
that it’ll be me in the stands
watching them on whatever they
choose to do, and anything’s
possible, no matter your
circumstances.”
Kazuma Kobori is headed for the
Championship this year.
He has a massive
final event of the
The tournament, which starts
today, will be played on the Greg
course.
Kabori has an unassailable lead
on the all-important Australasian
order of merit after his three Webex
Player Series wins and a third
placing in the NZPGA championship
last weekend. He is assured
of one of the three DP World Tour
cards on offer for the top three
order of merit finishers.
However, he is also automatically
exempt for a prized place in
the Open Championship at Royal
Troon in July. Also in his grasp
is an exemption into the Alfred
Dunhill Championship played
at the famous St Andrews, Carnoustie
Said Kobori: “I was just trying
to get the DP World Tour card,
then my manager called me after
the NZ Open and said I had The
Open spot sealed too. That is a
pretty cool bonus.”
FIRST-UP LOSS FOR KEAS
Perennial Canterbury rugby
league champions Linwood have
opened the pre-season tournament
with a loss to a gritty Riccarton
Knights outfit 18-8. But as the
Keas lost by the smallest margin
of the three first-round fixtures,
they stay alive in the competition.
They will meet Halswell Hornets
in the semi-final on Saturday,
who romped to a 56-4 win over
the Northern Bulldogs. Riccarton
will meet the Eastern Eagles in
the other semi-final. The Eagles
beat last year’s losing grand finalist
Hornby Panthers 36-16. The semifinals
on Saturday are at Ngā Puna
Wai.
HICKORY TITLE FOR DOYLE
Christchurch Golf Club
professional Anthony Doyle
won the New Zealand Hickory
Open on his home course on
Sunday. Doyle shot 48 over the
traditional 12-hole competition,
beating other Christchurch
players Jason Tilley (49) and
course superintendent Mark
Lawson (50). Last year’s winner
Sir Bob Charles, approaching
his 88th birthday, fought off an
achilles injury to finish in the
middle of the field, six shots back
from Doyle. Charles did come
away with some silverware – he
won the award for best dressed,
wearing a Donegal tweed outfit
from Scotland.
ELMWOOD’S premier women’s
tennis team has returned to the
winners’ circle after an absence
of six years, while the Cashmere
men’s team backed up their
success last year in the interclub
finals last weekend.
Both teams dominated their respective
season finales, Elmwood
with a convincing 6-0 win over
Te Kura Hagley, while Cashmere
beat Bishopdale 5-1.
Elmwood’s captain Louise
Oxnevad was delighted with her
team’s unbeaten record for the
season.
“We’ve been really focused on
our tennis all season and have
had great support from the club,”
she said.
She was in stunning form in
the final and won her singles
without dropping a game as did
her young team mate, 15-year-old
Danielle Scheepers.
Elmwood last won the women’s
premier championship in the
2017-18 season when current top
player Abby Mason, 20, was in
the team as a 14-year-old.
“It’s great for Elmwood to be
back as the championship winners
and hopefully we can do it
again next season,” Oxnevad said.
Cashmere have made light
work of their opposition in the
post-Christmas round and James
WINNERS: Elmwood’s victorious team (from left) Danielle
Scheepers, Mia Wardlaw, Louise Oxnevad, Abby Mason,
Tessa McCann and Holly-Jayne Feutz.
and Tim Meredith, Harry Weeds
and Lucas Evans were impressive
in front of crowd on Saturday.
Meredith said the team’s results
showed the benefit of a consistent
line-up each week.
“The team culture is good and
we get together and practice
during the week with a pool of
around 10 players, many of them
young members of the club aspiring
to play for the premiers,” he
said.
Meredith congratulated Bishopdale
for making the final.
“They are a really cool team
with a good culture too. They
should feel proud of their season,”
he said.
ASPIRING Canterbury tennis
players will have the chance
next month to train with an
international coaching team from
the Rafa Nadal Academy, based in
Mallorca, Spain.
The camps are being held at
Edgeware starting on April 22,
with sessions for juniors and
adults.
The academy is holding
similar camps across Australia
and then in Auckland before the
Christchurch events.
“Our goal is to offer aspiring
recreational and competitive players
the chance to train like a pro,
without having to travel too far to
do so,” said the academy’s Spainbased
spokesperson Joan Pons.
The academy’s coaching director
Joel Figueras has coached the
Mexican Davis Cup team, players
on the ATP tour, and for the
Said Edgeware coach Nick
for all players to have a bulk
amount of training in a short
timeframe and we are looking
forward to seeing the results. It’s
GARDENING 31
Time to tidy up and prepare for winter
HARDY: If you want winter lettuce now is the time to get the plants into the soil. Stagger
planting for a steady supply.
PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES
MARCH IS a busy month in the
garden with the final harvesting
of summer crops and preparation
for your winter garden begins.
After the weird weather here
through January and February,
let’s hope the rest of March will
bring more settled conditions for
gardening.
The last of summer vegetable
crops are ready to harvest. Do a
general tidy up and remove any
finished or diseased crops and
weeds etc before you begin preparation
of your winter garden.
Soil plays an important part in
growing healthy strong plants, so
always prepare the soil that you
will grow your vegetables in well.
Enrich and aerate it by digging
in plenty of compost a week or
two before planting. Check drainage
is adequate for the wet winter
months and when planting out,
rotate the site for your vegetables.
By rotating where crops are
planted, you can manage the soil
nutrient balance. The benefit of
crop rotation is that as one plant
depletes the soil of certain nutrients,
the next plant will replenish
the soil as it grows.
Winter vegetables can now be
planted – either with young seedlings
or by sowing seed directly
into the garden.
Vegetables such as beetroot,
broccoli, brussells sprouts, cabbage,
cauliflower, carrots, lettuce,
onions, radish, silver beet, spinach,
swedes and turnips. Stagger
your plantings so you have
a steady supply over the season.
Apply side dressings of fertiliser
every four to six weeks throughout
the growing period (depending
on what you grow and how
often you water your garden)
to help keep plants in optimum
health.
Flowering annuals that flourish
in the heat and long days of summer
are now nearing the end of
their season.
Some species will continue
flowering well into April, but in
general, it is time to remove old
plants and thoroughly prepare
sites for your winter displays.
Winter flowering annuals are
a wonderful way to add colour
to the garden during the colder
months.
Some varieties are; aquilegias,
alyssum calendulas, cinerarias,
cornflowers, lobelias, nemesia,
pansy, primulas, snapdragons,
statice, stock, sweet william, wall
flower and violas.
Planting of bulbs should be
completed by the end of the
month in colder parts of New
Zealand. Their blooms will be a
welcome sight after a long dreary
winter.
Prepare the sites well for your
new bulbs by adding compost
and ensure there is enough drainage.
Think about the final effect
you want to achieve from your
bulbs come spring, for instance,
bulbs planted in clusters produce
a more dramatic display.
Bulbs to plant in March include
anemone, daffodil, hyacinth,
freesia, ranunculus, Ixia, lachenalia,
sparaxis, tritonia, tulip and
watsonias.
It’s a great month for apples and
pears with many varieties ripening.
Gold queen peach (the last
of the peaches to ripen) is mature
on trees now. In early March, in
warmer areas, passionfruit will
be ripening – pick from the vines
or collect off the ground as they
turn purple. Stone fruit trees that
have finished cropping can now
be pruned to remove old and
crowded branches, retaining wellspaced,
new season growth for
next year’s fruit.
Once the weather has settled
and regular autumn rains have
arrived, the laying of new lawns
and/or the renovation of existing
lawns can begin. As with most
tasks in the garden, preparation
is the key to success. Always
check the quality of the top soil
you bring on to your property to
avoid a new lawn full of seeds.
Use bagged products for
smaller spaces. One of the top tips
for getting a superior year-round
lawn is sowing a mixture of lawn
seed.
With existing lawns, feed with
fertiliser and water it in well.
Mow your lawn regularly to
encourage strong, healthy grass
growth.
Notice for consultation on proposed Enrolment Scheme amendments
for Christchurch East School and Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate
The Ministry of Education has identified that both Christchurch East School and Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate
require amendments to their enrolment schemes.
After engagement with the Boards of these schools, we have developed proposed enrolment scheme
amendments for Christchurch East School and Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate under the Education and Training
Act 2020.
As part of this process, we are consulting with the schools’ communities and with people living in the area.
Under these schemes, students can enrol if they live within the proposed home zone. The enrolment of out-ofzone
students is governed by the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
A copy of the proposed enrolment scheme for Christchurch East School is available at
A copy of the proposed enrolment scheme for Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate is available at
HAPPY
SAINT
PATRICK’S
DAY
While many of us
take part in
celebrating
St Patrick's Day,
there are probably
few New Zealanders
who know much
about the
Patron Saint of
Ireland
ST PATRICK was born somewhere on the west coast
of Britain, and when he was 16 he was captured by
raiding Irish ships and taken to Ireland to be sold as a
slave. He was bought by a man called Milchu who put
him to work shepherding his flock on a mountain
side.
One night Patrick had a dream in which he heard a
voice telling him to leave the mountain side and go
down to the coast where he would find a boat to take
him back home. When he reached the coast he saw
the boat, as the dream had promised, but
unfortunately as he had no money the boat’s captain
refused to take him. The boat sailed away, but wasn’t
long at sea when a fierce storm blew up. The crew
fearing death told the captain that it is vengeance for
not letting the lad aboard. Out of fear they turned the
boat around and went back for Patrick.
Back in Britain,Patrick went on to study to become a
priest and eventually was made a bishop.
In a recurring dream he heard the voices of the
children of Ireland calling him back to teach them
about God, so returned to Ireland and went straight
to see his old captor Milchu.
This is where Patrick began converting the Irish
pagan people to Christianity.
While trying to explain the Holy Trinity (Father,
Son and Holy Ghost as one) he is said to have used a
shamrock leaf to demonstrate how there could be
three separate parts to the shamrock but only one leaf
- and so the shamrock symbol of Ireland was born.
St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17
as it is believed to be the date St Patrick died.
