Teen track stars eyeing 

spots at world champs

TWO YOUNG middle 

distance runners are chasing 

qualification for the junior 

world championships – one on 

the back of a national record. 

Cooper Wightman, 16, 

and Daniel Prescott, 17, will 

compete in the 1500m at the 

U20 national championships, 

starting in Wellington today. 

Wightman is a year 12 

student at Christchurch Boys’ 

High School while Prescott 

finished up at St Thomas’ last 

year and will be attending 

college in the United States on 

an athletics scholarship from 

August. 

Wightman recently broke 

the national U17 record for the 

800m in a time of 1:50.46 at 

the International Track Meet at 

Ngā Puna Wai, a race in which 

Prescott set a personal best. 

Last year Wightman also set 

the record for the fastest time 

as a 15-year-old New Zealander 

in the 800m. 

But neither will run the 

800m at the U20 nationals. 

Instead they are competing 

in the 1500m, with the heats 

on Saturday and the final on 

Sunday, because it is more of 

stacked field.

championships will be held in 

August in Lima, Peru.

mean a lot to represent his

country if he got the chance. 

“One of my goals from 

when I started running was to 

represent New Zealand. So, just 

keep pushing away at it and 

we’ll just see how it goes.” 

Despite both having achieved 

the required qualifying time in 

the 1500m, they are far from 

confirmed to take part. 

Seven runners have achieved 

the qualifying time, but 

Athletics New Zealand can 

only select two to compete 

internationally. 

It makes this weekend’s race 

essentially a straight shootout. 

“I don’t know if there’s ever 

been that many other runners 

that have ran that so it’s just 

based off whoever gets top-two 

at nationals,” said Wightman.

Walking with grief after double cancer blow

JADE BELL’S solution to 

grief was to walk with it, after 

winning her cancer battle but 

losing her partner to the disease. 

To continue her walk, 

the Templeton resident will 

participate in the Selwyn Relay 

for Life in Rolleston on Saturday 

as a solo participant for the 12- 

hour event. 

Bell, 44, was diagnosed 

with hodgkins lymphoma on 

Christmas Eve 2004 and after 

undergoing treatment in 2005, 

was able to beat the cancer. 

“The cancer is behind me. I 

do have a couple of health issues 

now that are treatment-related 

from the radiation and chemo,” 

she said. 

Bell was hoping to put the 

disease behind her, but that 

proved not to be. In 2022 she lost 

her partner of almost 18 years, 

John Wood, to pancreatic 

cancer. 

“John died on October 25, a 

day before our 18th anniversary 

and three days before his 

birthday.” 

Bell said his battle was 

“horrific”. 

“We only had two-and-a-half 

months from finding out that 

he had cancer to his passing 

so everything happened really 

quickly. 

“We hadn’t long been together 

when I was diagnosed and he 

helped me through my cancer

and my treatment. So it was 

really lovely to be able to care for 

him, but really hard to know that 

I wasn’t going to be able to help 

him through,” Bell said. 

After John died, Bell began 

walking. 

“I joined the Walk1200km 

challenge soon after he passed, 

and last year I walked over 

2400km. 

“I don’t say it helped me 

through my grief, I say I walk with 

my grief.” 

At first, she started walking 

around her neighbourhood, 

continuing her journey around 

the hills. 

“I spent many hours walking 

over the Port Hills, which was just 

amazing. I quite often say when 

you’re on a track like that you 

don’t feel alone but sometimes you 

can be in a room crowded with 

people and feel quite alone.” 

Bell’s first Relay for Life was last 

year when her friends invited her 

to complete a lap. This year 

it will be a bit different as she 

aims to complete a minimum 

of 40km and could walk up to 

70km. 

“I really want to do as much 

I can for the Cancer Society 

because they don’t receive any 

Government funding and the 

work they do is priceless,” she 

said. 

For Bell, the event offers her a 

chance to remember John. 

“It is another challenge to keep 

me moving forward, to remember 

John and other loved ones who 

lost the battle, to celebrate my 

survival and support those 

fighting.”

oversee planning matters would

“I’m reasonably confident the 

majority are comfortable with 

that. This has been a strength of 

mine,” she said.

Hornby Library building next 

to it on Goulding Ave by the

Once the Hornby Library

The trust’s chair Bob Shearing 

said it has been a long 

process. 

“It is something I have been 

working on since first hearing 

about the library moving. 

Ultimately, it’s about having 

the space, which is premium 

for organisations, to offer to the 

community.”

and make the space fit 

for purpose. There is still a lot 

of money needed for the full 

fit-out,” Shearing said.

made the qualifying time), Daniel 

is second-fastest and Cooper is 

fourth,” she said. 

“But Cooper ran his in a local 

event while all the rest were in 

big meets like (the Sir Graham 

Douglas International in Auckland 

last weekend). 

“It’s easier to run faster in those 

big meets with other runners 

around you and I know Cooper’s 

got more in him.” 

Wightman said the prospect was 

exciting. 

“It’s just down to one simple race, 

who comes out better on that day. 

“I quite like that instead of 

having points and stuff where you 

have to worry about all the races 

you’re running.”

One-pot green dahl 

This is a one-pot wonder that we often 

make for Sunday night dinner at our 

house. Nourishing and wholesome, 

it really sets us up for the week ahead. I’ve 

added extra greens here with some Swiss 

chard, but you could easily swap this for 

spinach, beet leaves or even a couple of 

handfuls of peas, if that’s what you have 

to hand. Gluten free, dairy free, vegan/ 

vegetarian. 

Ingredients 

2 × 400g tins of black beans, drained and 

rinsed 

1 Tbsp olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 

½ red pepper, deseeded and roughly 

chopped 

1 shallot or small onion, roughly chopped 

220g mushrooms, roughly chopped 

2 cloves garlic, crushed 

1½ tsp ground cumin 

½ tsp sweet smoked paprika 

½ tsp dried mixed herbs 

65g breadcrumbs (use gluten-free, if necessary) 

80g feta, crumbled 

1 large free-range egg 

1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

1 shallot or ½ medium white onion, 

sliced 

1 Tbsp coconut oil or mild olive oil 

1 large piece of fresh root ginger (about 

3cm), peeled and grated 

2 cloves garlic, grated 

1 green chilli, deseeded and chopped 

1 tsp mustard seeds 

1 tsp ground coriander 

1 tsp ground cumin 

1 tsp ground turmeric 

300g dried black/brown lentils 

1 × 400ml tin of coconut milk 

200g Swiss chard, washed and roughly 

chopped 

Natural or dairy-free yoghurt, to serve 

(optional) 

Fresh coriander, chopped 

Directions 

In a shallow saucepan, fry the shallot 

or onion in the coconut or olive oil over 

a medium heat for 5 minutes, until it 

starts to soften and caramelise, stirring occasionally. 

Add the ginger, garlic and chilli and all 

of the spices, and fry for another 5 minutes, 

stirring often. 

Mix in the lentils, coconut milk and 

650ml water. 

Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and 

simmer for about 40–50 minutes, stirring 

occasionally, until the lentils are soft and 

the water absorbed. Add the Swiss chard 

and cook for 5 minutes, until wilted. 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 150degC 

fan/170degC. 

Spread the drained beans on a baking 

tray and bake for 15 minutes until slightly 

dried out. (This is important.) Add the oil to 

a medium-large saucepan over a mediumhigh 

heat. Add the pepper, shallot or onion, 

mushrooms, garlic, cumin, paprika and 

mixed herbs and saute for around 8 minutes 

until soft. Remove from the heat and set 

aside to cool a little. 

Place the sauteed vegetables and all the 

remaining ingredients, including a good 

pinch of salt and grind of pepper, in a large 

food processor and pulse until combined, 

leaving some larger chunks. 

Using wet hands (as it helps prevent the 

mixture sticking), shape the mixture into 

6 patties (each roughly 8–10cm). Line a 

baking tray with parchment paper and place 

the patties on top. Put the tray in the fridge 

for a couple of hours, to help the patties stick 

together. 

Preheat the grill to a medium heat or the 

oven to 190degC fan 210degC. 

If grilling, drizzle a little olive oil over the 

patties and place them under the grill for 

8 minutes. Turn them over, then grill for 4 

minutes on the other side, checking every 

few minutes as every grill is different. They 

should look a little golden. 

If baking, drizzle a little olive oil over 

the patties, then bake in the oven for 10 

minutes. 

Flip them over and bake for a further 10 

minutes.

Tiny SUV packed with pep and personality 

ALONG WITH the new 

generation Jimny and the Ignis 

are the funky, fun and affordable 

members of the otherwise staid 

Suzuki NZ model line-up. 

They are the smallest new 

SUVs sold but have giant sized 

personalities. Alongside the 

popular Swift hatch, they are 

driving the brand’s continuing 

strong sales growth. 

With a unique design and 

trendy, yet slightly retro, 

appearance, the Ignis made a 

triumphant return in 2016 after 

a long absence, having an almost 

immediate and positive impact. 

Distinctive SUV looks, a 

roomy cabin, plus sharp pricing, 

meant it ticked a lot of boxes for 

those on a budget. 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

The Ignis gets runs on the 

board right away with its cute 

front end, chunky wheel arches 

and eye catching angled roofline. 

I like how the styling touches 

pay homage to previous Suzuki

for the automatic. The higher

injected power plant has variable 

valve timing technology and 

produces 66kW and 120Nm of 

torque at 4400rpm. 

Dualjet engine technology 

engine reduces emissions. It does 

this brilliantly, with the manual 

producing just 107 grams per 

litre of CO2, and the automatic 

slightly more at 114 grams per 

litre. These figures better several 

hybrids costing considerably 

more than the humble Ignis. 

While these aren’t the 

ingredients for fire breathing 

performance, the engine 

has sufficient flexibility and 

responsiveness to satisfy most 

owners without sending their 

pulses racing. 

Acceleration is lively and the 

motor shows far more tenacity 

than its modest capacity would 

suggest. However, at higher revs 

it does become coarse and lumpy. 

The automatic in the test car 

proved smooth and efficient in 

lower speed urban driving. At 

open road pace it’s less agreeable, 

proving slow to kick down under 

hard acceleration when you need 

that extra burst of power. 

The cabin is modern, inviting 

and offers a decent amount of 

space for a diminutive hatch. 

There is plenty of head and leg 

room for both front and rear 

occupants, while good ground 

clearance makes it easy to enter 

and leave. 

The LTD is well appointed 

with cruise control, power 

steering, electric windows and 

electric mirrors. A computer 

displays fuel consumption, sixspeaker 

audio system, Bluetooth 

audio-streaming and hands-free 

calling. 

Playful and surprisingly 

composed road holding are 

a good fit with the vehicle’s 

effervescent personality. 

However, being taller and 

narrower than other cars in 

this class, body lean enters the 

handling frame sooner when 

nudging things along through 

tight corners or over undulating 

terrain. This only becomes worse 

if you continue to unreasonably 

push the vehicles handling 

limits. A plus for urbanites is 

the vehicle’s excellent turn-ona-dime 

4.7 metre turning circle, 

that makes light work of U-turns 

in narrow streets.
