5 6 RHS pair take third By JOHN COSGROVE Making the transition from AgriKids to junior young farmer of the year is a huge step, says John Lundy. John, aged 14, and teammate Harry Parish (15), are students at Rangiora High School and the pairing earned a hardfought third place against 18 other teams competing in the regional final of the junior young farmer of the year competition held at the recent FMG Young Farmer of the Year Tasman regional finals in Christchurch. This was the first time either had competed at the junior young farmer of the year competition, although John had won at aregional final as part of the AgriKids team from North Loburn School acouple of years ago. ‘‘They are two very different competitions,’’ says John. ‘‘Agrikids is all about having fun whereas the junior young farmer competition is amirror of the Young Farmer of the Year contest.’’ It was just like competing in the adult competition, John says, doing much the same sort of activities right down to the quickfire Qand Asession at the end with host Te Radar. Harry and John teamed up at the start of the year and have studied hard since. ‘‘It’s not just about the physical farmrelated tasks they judge you on, it’s about safety, mental strength, general knowledge and alot more. While John is acountry boy, Harry is atownie who helps out in the holidays on adairy farm. ‘‘I love it,’’ Harry says. ‘‘The challenges farming poses make me want to do better each time I’m on the farm.’’ They are now waiting to see if they will be competing in the national final, as being thirdplace getters they are first reserve if either of the other teams pull out. 1993653 RURAL LIFE The North Canterbury News, March 14, 2024 35 Mikayla in winningteam By JOHN COSGROVE North Canterbury high school students held their nerve as they competed against 18 other teams in the junioryoung farmer of the year Tasman regional finals. Mikayla Molloy of Sefton, was part of the winning Rangi Ruru Girls High School team with Tabitha White, and says the regional finals were thrilling and nerveracking at the same time. ‘‘It was awesome to catch up with some of the people we competed against last year. ‘‘It wasn't too hard once you have got your first regional final under your belt as you get into the swing of things. ‘‘The day overall went pretty well, we were second overall at the end of the modules with 315 points, two points behind the St Bedes boys, and we pulled through in the faceoff to win, which was exciting.’’ This year was the second year she has competed in the junior young farmer of the We canassist in the following: Rotaryboom irrigators service andrepairs Dairyshed yard work –gates,rails etc. Trailermanufacturingand repairs Full timeworkshopattendancefor emergencyrepairss Over countersales andcourier deliveries Chains, bearings year competition. Last year her team got second place at the Tasman regionals, and went to Grand Finals in Timaru. She says the regional finals are similar to the work she does on the farm, but she put alot of study hours into some of the modules too. ‘‘At Rangi Ruru, we have the Young Farmers Club where we get numerous opportunities throughout the year like junior young farmer of the year, Clash of the Collages . ‘‘We have ayoung farmers trip every year and we also have the opportunity to study Agriculture /Horticulture online through Te Kura (correspondence ).’’ Kate Grinter, head of geography at Rangi Ruru, says the schools young farmers club has about 40 members and this year they had three teams representing the school at the Tasman region of the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition.
