Country cricket stalwart celebrated<br />

SPORTING PEDIGREE runs<br />
in the family for award-winning<br />
Darfield and Canterbury Country<br />
coach Rob Frew.<br />
Frew is the brother-in-law of<br />
former Black Caps batter Nathan<br />
Astle via his sister – Astle’s wife<br />
Lisa, who also represented the<br />
White Ferns in 1993.<br />
His sons Jordy and Jesse play<br />
for Darfield’s premier team while<br />
Jesse also represents Canterbury<br />
Country under the eye of his dad.<br />
Last week, Frew, 53, was<br />
recognised for his huge coaching<br />
contributions to Darfield and<br />
Canterbury Country, winning<br />
the outstanding contribution and<br />
services to coaching prize at the<br />
New Zealand Cricket awards.<br />
He said the it came out of the<br />
blue.<br />
“I didn’t know I was being nominated.<br />
So when they rang and<br />
said to me ‘you won an award,’ it<br />
was like, oh, yeah, so, what have I<br />
won?’<br />
“But I guess it’s just a nice<br />
recognition. You do a lot of<br />
coaching without wanting<br />
recognition, but it’s nice that<br />
people do appreciate what you’ve<br />
done over a long period of time.”<br />
Frew started his coaching<br />
journey <strong>20</strong> years ago in the same<br />
place he is now – with Canterbury<br />
Country.<br />
“I did a player-coach role with<br />

Canterbury Country, with the<br />
senior team, that was for 10 years,”<br />
he said.<br />
“Then from there, I probably<br />
started off doing everything at<br />
Darfield, with the wee guys right<br />
the way through.<br />
“And the same with Canterbury<br />
Country, doing everything from<br />
primary schools, right through<br />
to under 15s, 17s, development<br />
teams, touring teams right back<br />
up to emerging players and now<br />
I’m back doing the Country team<br />
again.”<br />
In addition to his coaching<br />
roles, Frew is still an active player.<br />
He played 45 times for<br />
Canterbury between 1996<br />
and <strong>20</strong>03, and represented<br />
Canterbury Country until<br />
<strong>20</strong>13, and continued to play for<br />
Darfield until <strong>20</strong>19.<br />
He was selected for New<br />
Zealand’s over-50s side two years<br />
ago and has been in Blenheim<br />
playing a quad-series against<br />
Australia, the USA and the New<br />
Zealand over-50 ‘A’ side. Frew<br />
scored 43 against NZ A but<br />
struggled for runs in his other<br />
two matches, scoring 5 and 0.<br />
He said being able to represent<br />
his country is “pretty cool”.<br />
“When a lot of guys retire,<br />
families and bits and pieces get in<br />
the way.<br />
“I just enjoy being with a bunch<br />
of guys who have generally got a<br />
pretty good positive outlook on<br />
life. They have a good time.<br />
“We take it reasonably seriously<br />
but at the same time we are 50, so<br />
things don’t always go right.”<br />
Frew said it’s a heavy workload,<br />
but not unmanageable.<br />
“It’s sort of how I spend my<br />
summers, I suppose. That’s how<br />
we’ve always done it, as a family.<br />
“It’s a time consuming sport,<br />
but it is rewarding and sometimes<br />
you do think, well, what else<br />
would I rather be doing?”<br />
