Christchurch
pornographer
jailed for
14 years in US
• By Anna Leask
A CHRISTCHURCH man
has been sentenced to
14 years in prison in the
United States after he helped
his childhood friend trick
scores of women into the porn
industry.
Matthew Isaac Wolfe was
sentenced yesterday in the
United States District Court in
San Diego – where he claimed
he was effectively forced to go
and work for his mate after
the Christchurch earthquake
destroyed job prospects for
young people.
He also claimed his role in
the offending was secondary
to his friend and boss Michael
Pratt.
In July 2022, Wolfe pleaded
guilty to conspiracy to commit
sex trafficking by force, fraud
and coercion.
He admitted he moved to the
US in 2011 to work for Pratt,
who owned the now-defunct
GirlsDoPorn website.
Pratt and Wolfe met at
primary school and while they
attended different secondary
schools – Christchurch Boys’
High School and Burnside
High respectively – they
remained friends.
Straight out of school,Pratt
and Wolfe entered the porn
industry, launching the
websites Wicked Movies,
TeenieFlixxx and Kute Kitten
in 2000.
In the US, Wolfe persuaded
women aged between 18 and
23 to appear in adult videos –
telling them the videos would
never be posted online or
released in the US.
Further, he promised no
one who knew the women
would ever find out about their
production.
Despite his promises, Wolfe
was well aware that personal
identifying information and
social media accounts for some
women were being posted
onpornwikileaks.com – a site
controlled by Pratt
and dedicated to “exposing”
the true identities of
individuals appearing in
sex videos.
Many of those duped into
filming were struggling
financially and were offered
between US$3000 and
US$5000 (NZ$5000 to $8000)
as payment, as well as an “all
expenses” trip to San Diego.
HERITAGE-LISTED convent
buildings that once housed New
Zealand’s only female Anglican
order have sold to a Singaporean
investor for $1.7 million.
The complex, built for the
Sisters of the Community of
the Sacred Name in the late
19th century, is on St Asaph St.
Stuff reported the property
was put up for sale earlier this
year by local charity the Home
and Family Society, which took
it over in as-is condition from
the Anglican sisters in 2018.
The deal was brokered by
Heritage New Zealand to save
the buildings from demolition.
The society spent almost $3m
repairing and restoring the
quake-damaged buildings.
The project was helped by a
$950,000 city council heritage
grant, $800,000 of lottery money,
a Heritage New Zealand
grant and other donations.
The society used the offices
and meeting rooms as a base
Miss Canterbury following in
her grandmother’s footsteps
SUCCESS: Paige Sullivan was crowned Miss Canterbury on
Sunday, 66 years after her grandmother.
for its work with troubled
families and children.
After taking on more work
the society is now seeking
alternative premises able to
house all its activities and staff.
The Good Habit cafe is a
tenant in the property and
remains in business on the site.
There is also a chapel which
has been used for weddings.
The unidentified buyer is still
deciding on his plans for the
property.
• By Daniel Alvey
SIXTY-SIX YEARS after her
grandmother claimed the title,
Paige Sullivan has won the
Miss Canterbury title.
“I felt sick I was so nervous. I
really didn’t expect to be at that
point and I honestly still don’t
believe it,” she said.
It was Sullivan’s first beauty
pageant.
“It was really incredible, all
of the girls were amazing and
so kind . . . the whole process
from start to finish was really
empowering.”
Sullivan said being Miss
Canterbury was more than just
being “pretty”, compared to
when her grandmother Dianna
McFarlane competed in 1958.
“I found out that half of the
score is made up of community
work, and I thought I was
already doing that anyway, and
it’s really aligned with me.”
Sullivan also won best in
interview, Miss Charity and
Miss Positivity.
As part of the competition,
she ran a fashion show and
raised $9000 for the I Am
Hope charity, which helps
youth receive mental health
counselling and other support.
LEGACY: Miss Canterbury
Paige Sullivan’s
grandmother, Dianna
McFarlane, won the
competition in 1958.
“I’m really proud of that and
I think it will make a difference
for the organisation as well,”
she said.
Sullivan said she is likely to
enter Miss New Zealand next
year.
Sands to be restricted
Extensive damage to parts of
Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere
has forced the Selwyn District
will be installed to stop vehicles
the shore of the lake, from the LII
lines up with the breeding season
for the banded dotterel, while the
He has recently been extradited
US District Judge Janis
The San Diego Union-Tribune
Further, the lawyers claimed
“It is now Mr Wolfe’s turn to
Wolfe’s actions drove some of
the women to attempt suicide –
and many of them to seriously
consider it.
“Every day since meeting Mr
Wolfe, I have had to make a very
conscious decision just to stay
woman.
“There are days I wish I had
A HIGHLY regarded staff
Christchurch after a suspected
$105,000 fraud had been detected.
The woman has returned to
England where she is from.
The Christchurch Football
The club laid a complaint to
information was provided to
A police spokesperson said
only “initial routine inquiries”
“Police have to prioritise investigations
and an investigator will
spokesperson said.
A club spokesperson said:
“There’s zero confidence the
The woman who left Christchurch
after the money was
discovered missing was lauded as
a “true legend” by club members
in 2021.
She then briefly held a
position at a prestigious
Christchurch girls’ school
before leaving.
It is understood her husband
the woman to England,
leaving a house and
“We spent three months
and quite a lot of money on
The missing money
relates to the alleged creation
of fraudulent invoices which
were sent to sponsors for events
held at the club’s Christchurch
Park headquarters on Westminster
St, Mairehau.
Evidence of these transactions
was discovered when a club
email account was searched.
The club’s board chairman
Craig Calder would not comment
in depth on the issue,
although he confirmed “a number
of major internal financial
irregularities” were discovered
last November.
“In January the forensic accountants’
investigations were
concluded and those findings
along with other evidence, facts
and statements were provided to
police.”
He would not comment on the
veracity of the police investigation
or whether he was confident
the money could be recovered.
“A complaint has been lodged
with the police, who are working
through their processes,” he said,
adding the club was still in a
healthy financial state.
DOC forced to euthanise
stranded pilot whale
A JUVENILE pilot whale
that was stranded on a Banks
Peninsula beach yesterday
morning has been euthanised.
Local residents, Department
of Conservation rangers and
representatives from Project Jonah
worked to re-float the whale
after it was found about 3km
from Birdlings Flat.
However, a Project Jonah
New Zealand spokesperson said
yesterday afternoon DOC had to
euthanise the whale.
“Kia ora, the decision to
euthanise is made by Department
of Conservation often in
consultation with other agencies
who are on the beach including
Project Jonah and iwi,” the
spokesperson said.
“It’s not a decision that is
made lightly and is always done
with the welfare of the whale
front and centre.
“Thank you to everyone who
helped with this beautiful animal
today. Ngā mihi and look
after yourselves.”
DOC mahaanui operations
manager Andy Thompson said
earlier yesterday staff were
providing technical and logistical
support and were assessing
whether there were other whales
in the area.
Thompson said DOC was
not sure why the whale had
stranded.
“The whale is at a remote and
challenging site a few kilometres
south of Birdlings Flat,” he said.
“While we do not regularly
see pilot whales stranding on
Kaitōrete, the Banks Peninsula
area is a hotspot for a wide range
of marine life including whales.
It is not unusual for pilot whales
to be in this area.”
A Project Jonah spokesperson
said: “We’re also looking for any
signs of a pod in the area and
potentially at risk of stranding.”
Residents tried to keep the
whale alive yesterday morning
by digging a moat as the waves
came in. DOC had been hoping
to re-float it at high tide about
1.30pm.
A helicopter was also called
in to search for other stranded
whales.
Mysterious death
of mum-of-four
explained by
Coroner
• By Anna Leask
A CORONER has ruled the
death of a mother-of-four found
at her Heathcote home as the
result of an “accidental fall whilst
intoxicated”.
An inquest will not be held
into Heather Foote’s death as the
Coroner is satisfied the cause
and circumstances of the fatal
incident have been determined
by investigating police and a
pathologist.
Foote, 56, died on July 28, 2021
– two days after she was found
with critical injuries at her Port
Hills Rd home.
In September 2021, police confirmed
there were no suspicious
circumstances and the death
had been referred to Coroner
Heather McKenzie.
After reviewing all of the
information provided to her, she
did not consider it “necessary nor
desirable to open and conduct an
inquiry” into Foote’s death.
She said Foote’s direct cause of
death was acute subdural haemorrhage
– a serious condition
where blood collects between
the skull and the surface of the
brain – which was the result of
a blunt force head injury from a
“probable accidental fall whilst
intoxicated”.
She said post-mortem results
indicated Foote was a “chronic
alcoholic”.
Her two daughters saw her
before they left for school on
July 27 and her son found her at
about 11.20am.
She was face down on the
kitchen floor and unresponsive.
Foote died in Christchurch
Hospital two days later.
Police carried out an extensive
investigation – including a report
by a passer-by of “two people
loudly arguing” at Foote’s house
at about 11.04am.
Coroner McKenzie said neither
police nor the pathologist
found any evidence of foul play.
“In the days before her death,
Ms Foote had been generally
unwell and vomiting, saying that
she had the flu,” she said.
“A challenging aspect of Ms
Foote’s life was that she was a
heavy alcohol user.
“Ms Foote was known to fall
or bang into things while intoxicated
which reportedly caused
her to bruise and have marks on
her body.
“Ms Foote’s alcohol consumption
had reportedly increased in
the several years before her death
and possibly after she lost her job
found critically injured in
during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Coroner McKenzie said Foote
was a “very keen runner” but had
not been going out as much in
the lead-up to her death.
“She had also started isolating
herself, though kept in regular
contact with and supported her
father,” she noted.
A forensic pathologist told
the Coroner he believed Foote’s
“lethal” head injury was “most
likely the result of an accidental
fall whilst intoxicated”.
She sought further explanation
from him and he advised Foote
had “multiple recent falls, known
alcoholism, and a known haematological
abnormality – most
likely induced by her alcoholism
– making her more likely than
usual to bleed following trauma”.
“The evidence of multiple
bruises of different ages indicated
that Ms Foote had multiple
head impacts over at least several
days before her death and any
one or a combination of these
could have been responsible for
Ms Foote’s gradually progressive
fatal intra-cranial bleed,” the
Coroner explained.
“Ms Foote’s fatal haemorrhage
could have started earlier than
approximately 8.30am when
last seen by her daughter and
could have been the culmination
of slower bleeding reaching a
critical mass.”
CHRISTCHURCH Marathon
competitors can relax to a point.
The first City2Surf runner across
the line won’t be going the extra
mile next month.
Oska Baynes used the fun run
as a tune-up for the April 21
marathon – not that he intends to
complete the 42km test of endurance.
Baynes will be a pacemaker
for fellow long-distance runner
Andy Good, and anyone else
aiming to clock two hours 20 by
the 32km mark.
“I’ll be the metronome at the
front and take some of the wind.
I’ll do three laps then pull out
and leave the boys to it,” he said.
Baynes, who fittingly owns The
Frontrunner branch in Sydenham,
was not about to stop short
in the City2Surf however, despite
racking up 17km before most
runners had their shoes on.
Baynes drove to the finish line
to his store at The Colombo,
before loping back to join the
10,000 social and serious runners
assembled at Latimer Square for
the 12km route start at 9am.
Factor in a post-race warm
down and Baynes managed a
perfunctory 35km before midday.
“I was trying to replicate being
a little bit tired before we started,
running an hour and a bit beforehand
The principal of Addington Te
losing 99kg.
Bilas told a school assembly
last June she would tackle the
12km course from Latimer
Sunday and she fulfilled that
pledge, crossing the finish line in
“What a feeling! I wasn’t
prizegiving,” said Bilas, who had
a gastric bypass in 2021 to fasttrack
her weight loss.
The 51-year-old had spent the
summer holidays walking around
Hagley Park and the central city
every second day, and continued
that exercise regime when the new
school year started.
That preparation paid off as
she walked the long route – no
mean feat after she underwent
two knee replacement surgeries
last year.
She completed her preparation
on Friday with her race bib on,
leading students around the
school’s cycle track.
“There were moments of quite
big emotion, feeling ‘Wow I’m
doing this’, especially when it got
to 6km.”
Bilas paused for a brief photo
opportunity at the midway
finish where one of her students,
7-year-old Jack Burrell-Peddie,
escorted her over the line.
“That meant everything,” she
said.
LET’S CALL IN THE
SPECIALISTS…
Recently our son Connor, who is a
veterinarian, had the privilege to work
alongside two of NZLs finest surgeons
at McMaster & Heap Vets. This doesn’t
happen very often, but Connor was
between jobs and had a month in
Christchurch, and it just so happened we’d
lined the surgeries up.
Dara waiting patiently for her stifle
surgery
First up was on the delightful Dara, a 10
year old Labrador cross with Hip Dysplasia
and stifle disease. Dara is now living in
Geraldine, so a big trip for mum and dog.
Originally we organised Dr Helen Milner
to surgically correct the subluxated and
osteoarthritic hip but two weeks before
the scheduled surgery, Dara had pulled
up lame due to torn ACL ligaments in
the stifle. So it was decided on the day of
surgery, that the stifle was giving her more
pain and discomfort, so Connor scrubbed
in and saw Helen doing what she does
best. Suffice to say the surgery was a
huge success and Dara is back to normal
activity levels, pain free and enjoying life
in the country. If the hip ends up being
problematic for her we will schedule
another surgery, but for now she’s doing
great.
Connor assisting Dr Andrew Worth in
Altezza -Graces thoracic surgery to
repair a PDA
Dr Andrew Worth ( Specialist Small Animal
Surgeon at Massey University) happened
to be in town for Altezza - Grace’s thoracic
surgery to repair a Congenital PDA ( Patent
Ductus Arteriosus). Just so happened I
had my 33rd Veterinary reunion, held at
our home, and so we had 33 vets all in
one spot for a weekend. Was enormous
fun, seeing classmates I hadn’t seen since
we graduated. We are all doing a variety
of careers within the veterinary industry
and most of us are still working…. hard!
Altezza’s mum was very hesitate to fly
her anywhere for surgery as she had the
beginnings of heart disease from the PDA
and is a very anxious puppy anyway.
Altezza
-Grace
before
surgery
Also not having her insured yet, meant
referral to a specialist hospital was out of
the question.
Altezza’s congenital PDA meant that left
sided oxygenated blood was flowing into
the right sided lungs and not circulating
around the body, potentially leading to
congestive heart failure. No medications
could fix this mechanical problem,
she required thoracic surgery to ligate
the vessel that should have closed off
naturally once she was born. This surgery
is most definitely for the specialists so we
were so lucky to have Andrew in town
and our superb anaesthetic team. PDAs
can be difficult to detect therefore can
go undetected until the patient goes into
congestive heart failure. Dr Richard Lucy,
performed Echocardiography at MMH
and diagnosed her condition. Altezza
recovered excellently and to date is just
like a normal puppy, enjoying her life
to the fullest with no more medications
required.
Connor was very fortunate to assist
these experienced surgeons. Connor is
going down the path of specialisation
in the small animal surgical field so any
experience working alongside the best
is always so valuable. Connor has now
started his next internship, a straight
surgical one for a year, at Greencross
Veterinary Hospital in Melbourne. He’ll
be working alongside two surgeons and
many other specialists in a very busy
referral and first opinion practice where
they teach the 4th year Melbourne Vet
students.
So now we have two sons in Melbourne.
Isaac is a second year at Melbourne Uni,
studying Politics
and English.
Lots of excuses
now to cross the
Tasman and play
mum for the
weekend, wining
and dining
them and CBD
shopping sprees.
This article
highlights the
fact that at MMH
vets we try our
very best for the patient and the client,
finding solutions that are doable and
manageable financially for the client, yet
still doing our very best for our patient.
There are always options available and its
about flexibility and great communication,
deciding as a collaborative team what’s
going to work best.
record 1,072,893 views before Susie45
– Wanganui woman Susie
Langmaid – paid $22,750 for the
most bizarre souvenir from that
season’s fog-bound spectacle.
Nicole Davis listed the handbag
for sale after it was used by
Umaga to reprimand Masoe after
the loose forward punched a
friend of hers he accused of tripping
him up in the bar around
6am, as the Hurricanes drowned
their sorrows after losing 19-12 to
the Crusaders.
“At the moment I’m thinking
it’s pretty crazy, it’s right up there.
I thought I would get $600. I’m
thinking it’s an insane amount of
money,” Davies told media after
the auction.
“I’ve definitely been lucky, it’s
quite like winning Lotto.”
Her windfall more than covered
the fact Umaga struck Masoe
with such force a cellphone
inside the handbag broke.
The post-match wake was
chastening for Masoe, who was
ridiculed by bar patrons after
tearing up following Umaga’s
punishment, and then fined
$3000 by the New Zealand Rugby
Union. Umaga escaped censure.
Psychologist Sara Chatwin said
the ‘weirdo factor’ along with
Umaga’s standing as a national
icon were behind people’s desire
to own the handbag.
“Tana was, and still is, a
national hero. He’s an absolute
gem, and all of a sudden he’s gone
from rugby captain to Dame
Edna wannabe,” Chatwin said,
As Trade Me released its list to
coincide with the site’s 25th anniversary,
attempts to revisit Langmaid’s
Other listings to receive
an honourable mention
included a scrap of sandpaper
A lollipop actor Orlando
In more recent history, there’s
a Sky Tower creatively made
from MIQ rubbish and of course,
the timeless phallic-shaped fruit
Trade Me’s Jessamy Malcolm
Cowper said the listings that
made the top 25 weren’t just
there because of the number
of views they’d had, but how
memorable they were to Kiwis.
“Trade Me has this ability
to reflect New Zealand back
to itself. Our list includes
references to events like the ban
on smoking indoors, single-use
plastic bags, and the impact
of Covid-19. It’s a fascinating
look back at moments in our
collective history,” she said.
Someone even tried to auction
off the country of Australia in
2006, affectionately labelled
“large brown boring featureless
didn’t see any bids, as Australia
And who could forget former
Instead of igniting the feud
Catholic food
bank closes
due to costs
THE CITY’S hungry have one less
option for sustenance following the
closure of a food bank which had
served the needy for 60 years.
Catholic Social Services
reluctantly shut down its Cashel St
food bank earlier this month, citing
the rising cost of essential food
items and a lack of donations.
“It’s terribly sad our efforts to
feed those who cannot afford
food ceased because it had
become unaffordable,” said Simon
Thompson, general manager of the
Catholic Diocese of Christchurch.
“The difficult decision came
after 12 months of effort to find
additional funding streams.
“With Catholic Social Services
receiving very few donations of
food and only a tiny discount from
supermarkets, it was no longer
financially viable to operate the
food bank.’’
When the food bank closed
down, it was limited to supplying
about a dozen food parcels
delivered weekly.
Thompson recommended
people seeking food parcels from
Catholic Social Services should
first approach their partner
organisation, St Vincent de Paul.
Although the food bank has
closed, Catholic Social Services
expects to resume its soup kitchen
programme soon.
THE CITY’S longest-serving
local government politician has
staved off a leadership coup at
her community board, despite
ongoing concerns over her
stewardship.
Helen Broughton tendered
her resignation before last
Thursday’s monthly meeting of
the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board,
contingent on being able to act as
spokesperson on planning issues.
Broughton’s move to step
aside was related to pressure she
felt was being exerted by some
younger colleagues over her
performance in the role she was
elected unopposed for following
the 2022 local government
elections.
Her use of social media to
communicate board messages
to the public was identified as
a shortcoming, one Broughton
acknowledged and intended to
address.
However, her vast experience
with planning issues enabled her
to retain both the chair and lead
on planning matters because the
majority of board members did
not want to separate the roles.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Broughton’s resignation rejected
by community board colleagues
Broughton voted to accept her
own resignation, pending the
retention of her planning brief,
along with Henk Buunk and
Mark Peters.
But deputy chair Marie
Pollisco, Sarah Brunton, Gamal
Fouda, Tyla Harrison-Hunt,
Andrei Moore and Debbie Mora
rejected that scenario.
Broughton, who first
represented Riccarton on the
board in 1995 and served as a
city councillor from 2001-2013,
expected to be replaced as chair.
“It took me by surprise,” she
admitted.
Aware of some discontent with
her performance, Broughton
said she would hold individual
discussions with her eight board
colleagues.
“I want to know how things are
going from their perspective and
what needs to change,” she said.
Broughton conceded the 4.5
hour long meeting did not run
neatly throughout, particularly
debate regarding her role as
chair and then contentious safety
measures for the crash-prone
Church Corner intersection.
“We got through 15 items
smoothly, the 16th item (her
role as chair) and 17th (Church
Helen Broughton
Corner) were difficult items,” she
said.
“It was chaired reasonably well
but it probably wasn’t quite as
tight as it should have been.”
Broughton was also a
central figure in the board’s
second decision not to follow
city council staff advice and
implement safety-related changes
designated for the intersection of
Riccarton, Yaldhurst and Main
South Rds.
The board rejected the plan
to close down the right hand
turn from Main South Rd onto
Riccarton Rd and also add a
pedestrian crossing to Yaldhurst
Rd at a meeting on February
15, and were asked by staff to
reconsider.
Board members opposed to the
changes claimed logjams would
ensue if Main South Rd traffic
were forced to turn onto Curletts
Rd as a means of reaching
Riccarton Rd.
Broughton was the last
member to vote and she opted
to reject the changes, leading
to a tie and per council rules,
the February 15 decision was
retained.
Buunk, Mora and Peters voted
against the changes; Pollisco,
Brunton, Harrison-Hunt and
Moore were in favour while
Fouda had left the meeting at
that stage to attend a Mosque
attack commemoration.
After voting ,it appeared
Broughton wanted to backtrack
and send the issue back to the
board for a third time, only to be
informed by council staff it was
too late for a u-turn.
But Broughton told The Star
there was no confusion on her
part.
“I was clear how that vote
would go and I knew it would be
the status quo. I was clear about
how I was voting.”
Concerns over influence of council staff
THE SITUATION at Church
Corner raises serious concerns
about the undermining of the
democratic process by council
staff.
When community board
members, our elected
representatives, vote on an issue
– such as the modification of
the Church Corner intersection
– only to face behind-closeddoors
pressure to reverse
their decision, it suggests an
alarming bypass of democratic
protocols.
This is particularly
disconcerting when staff
reports are presented after a
decision has been made, as a
means to sway board members.
This move, as highlighted by
Debbie Mora of the Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board, is
unprecedented in her extensive
experience in local government.
Hiding behind legal
professional privilege for a nonsensitive
issue to avoid public
scrutiny is not justifiable. This
behaviour isn’t isolated.
A poignant example is the
council staff’s decision to
proceed with the $19 million
cycleway project, ignoring
Councillors Victoria Henstock
and Aaron Keown’s calls for
a pause in light of potential
government funding cuts.
This blatant disregard for
CONTENTIOUS: Decision making over the dangerous
intersection at Church Corner has highlighted concerns
around the council’s democratic processes.
elected members’ decisions
undermines the very essence of
our democracy.
Citizens deserve transparency
and adherence to the values
that uphold our democracy.
It’s crucial that the decisions
of elected representatives are
respected and not undermined.
– James Andrews, Papanui
Fly tipping
Only the Christchurch City
Council could turn rubbish
left on the street into a million
dollar exercise. Now they plan
to throw more money at it with
surveillance cameras.
Also getting enforcement
involved (presumably police,
good luck with that). Maybe the
errant ones were just giving the
old couch away anyway.
Yes by all means tell the
community boards (extra
morning tea there). Yeah, get
council legal teams involved.
Here is an idea, hire two
fit, strong individuals 50k a
year each and a truck. Free
dumping, all done. Forget the
inspections.
Yes Mr Guy, we know the
errant ones can dump it all
at Bromley. Remember these
streets are mostly in low socioeconomic
areas. Paying to
dump the old mattress is not
top of the pops for them.
– Mel Bonner, Queenspark
COSTLY: The cost of the council’s plan to tackle fly tipping
has raised eyebrows.
Celebrating Wilding Park’s 100
• By Chris Barclay
CANTERBURY’S home of
tennis celebrates its centenary in
appropriate fashion over Easter
weekend, with evergreen players
showcasing their timeless skills
to commemorate Wilding Park’s
opening in 1924.
A timely nod to the past
occurs on Good Friday (March
29) when the annual Tennis NZ
Masters national teams event
gets under way.
Although Wilding Park Tennis
Centre is the headquarters,
matches will be played in Shirley
and Spreydon, another reminder
of yesteryear given G Ollivier
won the inaugural Canterbury
Lawn Tennis Association’s Easter
Tournament men’s singles final
6-4 7-5 over PG Greenwood at
the nearby Avonside courts.
The doubles tournament, for
players aged 30–75-plus, has
attracted 72 teams comprising
367 players from Northland to
Otago, and is the only event to
mark the centenary.
“It’s fitting as a lot of these
players would have played
at Wilding Park many times
over their careers,” said Tennis
Canterbury general manager
Bevan Johns.
The oldest competitor is
Ashburton’s Jack Allan, who
turns 81 on April 30, is in
one of 11 teams representing
Canterbury Country.
Wendy Jones from South
Canterbury/Canterbury Country
is the oldest female player at 77.
The youngest is Callum
Old (Taranaki) who turns
30 in August – tournament
regulations stipulate you must be
30 during the year of the event.
Canterbury and Canterbury
Country have the biggest
representation with 11 teams
each, followed by Kapiti-Mana
on seven.
A women’s team from Victoria,
Australia, adds an international
flavour to the draw, while two
men from the state will play as
imports in a Canterbury team.
The Canterbury Lawn Tennis
Club was established on April 4,
1881 following a meeting at the
Commercial Hotel.
Four months later, the
Lancaster Park Club for cricket,
tennis and bowls was formed
at the same hotel, with the
committee featuring a name now
synonymous with Canterbury
tennis, Frederick Wilding.
Christchurch was chosen
by the New Zealand Lawn
Tennis association to host the
“championship of the colony” in
December 1887, the tournament
played on 18 temporary courts at
Lancaster Park.
Three years later the Linwood,
Sydenham, Canterbury College,
Southbridge, Canterbury,
Sumner and Merivale lawn
tennis clubs formed the
Canterbury Lawn Tennis
Association.
Tennis grew in popularity
during the 1890s and by the
end of the century, a precocious
15-year-old talent, Anthony
Wilding, rose to prominence
by beating his father, Frederick,
in a New Zealand Lawn Tennis
Championship match in
Dunedin.
Anthony Wilding eventually
claimed the Wimbledon men’s
singles title for four consecutive
years from 1910, and he also won
a tennis bronze for Australasia
at the 1912 Olympic Games in
Stockholm, Sweden.
Wilding also added titles
in Melbourne, Paris, Brussels
and Johannesburg to a glowing
resume before he joined the
Royal Marines shortly after the
outbreak of World War One in
1914.
Captain Wilding was killed in
action, aged 31, during the Battle
of Aubers Ridge near Neuve
Chapelle in France on May 9,
1915. He is buried at Rue-des-
Berceaux Military Cemetery
near the border with Belgium.
Before Wilding was killed
plans were already underway
to source land for a tennis
headquarters to cope with the
sport’s increasing demand but
it took until late 1922 for the
association to purchase a nineacre
block on Woodham Rd in
Linwood.
Benefactor John Hobbs Kirk’s
gift of £800 (an approximate
value of $125,000 now) to the
association earned naming
rights for the court complex and
he had no hesitation in opting
for Wilding Park to recognise
the fallen Wimbledon champion
and Frederick, who was known
as the grandfather of Canterbury
tennis.
Kirk also served as the
association’s president and was
patron when he died in 1938.
Wilding, the ‘grandfather
of Canterbury tennis’
and father of four-time
Wimbledon men’s single
winner Anthony, pictured
The blueprint for Wilding
Park was first published in The
Star on May 30, 1923 and the
headquarters hosted its first
tournament the following Easter
on grass and hard courts.
The facility was well-utilised
from its inception and from the
late 1970s Wilding Park saw
Christchurch regarded as New
Zealand’s ‘Davis Cup City’, a
1990 World Group victory over
a Yugoslavian team featuring a
19-year-old Goran Ivansevic was
particularly memorable.
In 2001 Ivansevic became
the only wildcard to win the
Wimbledon men’s singles title,
when ranked No. 125 in the
world.
Wilding Park hosted Davis
Cup ties on a regular basis
through the 1980s before New
Zealand’s matches were spread
around the country.

year legacy to Canterbury sport
Last year the venue staged a
tie (a 1-3 loss to Bulgaria) for the
first time since a 5-0 win over
Pakistan in 2016.
Wilding Park’s buildings and
39 courts were severely damaged
by the Canterbury earthquakes,
major remedial work was carried
out before the complex reopened
relatively quickly in April 2013.
One feature that survived was
the concrete volley wall used by
New Zealand tennis greats Onny
Parun and Brian Fairlie.
Swedish tennis icon Bjorn
Borg honed his ground strokes
in the caged area before an
exhibition match with Chris
Lewis, shortly after the Kiwi
made the 1983 Wimbledon final
against Borg’s nemesis John
McEnroe.
Post-earthquake, there are
24 hard courts, including six
indoors, enabling Wilding Park
to maintain its status as New
Zealand’s largest tennis centre.
Eight grass courts were
installed and ready for use
as part of an ambitious
redevelopment in November
2021, but they were out of
bounds about six months later.
“They looked beautiful and
people enjoyed playing on them
but it wasn’t the best use of the
funds unfortunately,” Johns said.
They cost about $80,000 to
maintain per year, not including
THEN AND NOW: Wilding Park’s grass courts, pictured in 1965, have now been replaced with a modern hard court
surface. The park has come a long way since the blueprint for tennis courts at Wilding Park was published in The Star on
May 30, 1923.
the salary of a full-time staff
member.
“It was a nice nostalgic idea,
but it didn’t really have any
commercial strengths. They
didn’t bring in any revenue so
we had to mothball them.
“There wasn’t a huge appetite
to play on grass. Juniors aren’t
that keen because (junior)
international tournaments are
on hard courts.”
Tennis Canterbury is looking
to use the now vacant grass
court area for pickleball, netball
and potentially other codes to
utilise the land.
That adaptability encapsulated
Wilding Park’s ability to
return serve in challenging
circumstances.
Johns said a line in the
Wilding Park strategic plan was
particularly apt as the venue
enters its second century: Over
a hundred years Wilding Park
has survived wars, depression,
recessions, pandemics and major
earthquakes.
“It’s a resilient place,” he said.
“People have talked about
moving our headquarters in
Canterbury a few times over that
period but it’s held fast.”
Powerful service made big impression
• By Chris Barclay
PANCHO GONZALES’
first serve is amateurish by
today’s standards on the men’s
professional tennis circuit.
Yet when the American tossed
the ball up at Wilding Park’s
grass centre court in January
1958, a young Dave Meredith
watched on awestruck.
A back-to-back US National
Championships (later US Open)
singles title winner in 1948-49,
Gonzales was almost hitting
his 30s when Christchurch was
included on his 87-match world
tour against Australian Lew
Hoad, six years his junior.
“Pancho was one of the
first guys that could serve
over a hundred mile an hour
(160km/h) with a wooden
racquet,” Meredith recalled.
“He was one of the bigger
servers in those days.”
American Sam Groth
currently holds the record for
the fastest serve in men’s tennis,
260km/h (163.4mp/h) during a
second round loss to Belarusian
Vladimir Ignatik at the 2012
Busan Open Challenger Tennis
tournament in South Korea.
Gonzales’ serve was also
negated by Hoad, who
triumphed 6-4 7-5 that summer
afternoon by pounding the
American’s backhand.
BIG HIT: Two-time US National Championships (later US Open) singles winner Pancho
Gonzales, serving here during the 1967 edition of the tournament in Forest Hills, New
York, made a lasting impression on Dave Meredith when he played an exhibition game
at Wilding Park in 1958.
“They all had different
weapons, court craft and all that
because a lot of it was played on
grass in those days. There was
a lot more net play,” Meredith
said.
The 75-year-old was
introduced to tennis by his
parents and he played for
Barrington, Avonside and
Hagley before snooker and
billiards – he is a multiple New
Zealand champion in both cue
sports – took precedence late in
his teenage years.
Meredith returned to tennis
in earnest when his three boys
Matt, Tim and James were
grasping the significance of
sport.
“I didn’t want to lead them
into billiards and snooker. In
those days people used to look
down on smoke-filled billiard
rooms,” he explained.
Meredith, who joined the
domestic masters tennis ranks in
2014 at age 66, is favoured to win
the 75+ age group men’s doubles
with a fellow Cantabrian, Gavin
Dunn.
They have known each other
since they were five years old, a
childhood that included serving
as ball boys when Australian
legends Rod Laver – his
favourite player back then – and
Ken Rosewall played indoors
at Canterbury Court, the old
Showgrounds building, during
the 1950s.
“What stood out for me as a
boy, watching Laver, was the
forearm on his racquet hand was
about half as big again his other
(right) arm. He was a marvellous
player in those days,” Meredith
said.
When Meredith and Dunn
last paired up for an Easter
tournament in Christchurch
in 2019, their six-member
Canterbury combination cruised
to overall 70+1 age group title
which is determined by total sets
won not matches.
They racked up 36 sets, never
dropped one, and won 78 per
cent of all points.
Meredith said he wouldn’t be
too bothered if he and Dunn
dropped down to the 70+
category if the draw revealed a
lack of viable rivals.
“As you get older there’s less
chances of North Island teams
coming down,” he said.
“We would benefit by getting
better games that way, even if
there’s less chance of winning
it. That’s what it’s about. You
don’t want to be going along and
playing easy teams, you want
some competition.”

Linwood Keas’ feathers ruffled
over plan to use name in NRL bid
• By Sam Coughlan
DISCUSSIONS are under
way behind the scenes over a
proposed South Island NRL
franchise’s plan to use an almost
identical name to Canterbury’s
top rugby league side.
The South
Island Kea
– headed by
former New
Zealand Rugby
and NRL chief
executive David
Moffett – aim
David
Moffett
to submit a bid
to join the NRL
when it next
expands, likely before 2028.
But the name has ruffled
feathers at the Linwood Keas,
Canterbury’s club grand-final
winner seven times in the past
eight seasons.
Linwood club
president Andrew
Auimatagi
told The Star
yesterday: “Our
brand is 111
years old, so,
yeah, we need to
Andrew
Auimatagi
do what we can
to protect our
brand.”
The Star understands Linwood
is taking legal advice over the
matter.
Questions from The Star
yesterday over potential issues
between the Linwood Keas
and South Island Kea over the
name appear to have prompted
hasty calls between various parties.
Moffett said not contacting
Linwood before last week’s
announcement was a “mistake”,
but one he was looking to
rectify. He had left a message on
BIRDS OF A FEATHER: Proposed NRL side South Island Kea plan to use an almost identical name to top rugby league
side the Linwood Keas.
a Linwood official’s voicemail
yesterday.
“We have been moving so fast
that a couple of things have fallen
through the cracks, and one
of them has been the Linwood
Keas, and I’m onto that.”
Moffett said he hoped the two
organisations can work together.
“We’re not going to steal their
thunder or anything like that,
but we’re just going to work with
them. I think we can help them,
as a part of the kea family if you
like.”
The Kea are one of two South
Island bids trying to enter the
NRL. Former Canterbury Rugby
League chief executive Tony
Kidd has also announced plans
for a as yet unnamed side. Both
his and Moffett’s would be based
at Christchurch’s new Te Kaha
stadium, which is due to open in
2026.
Moffett will present the
details of his planned bid to the
Canterbury Rugby League board
and New Zealand Rugby League
chief executive Greg Peters on
Monday.
CRL chief executive Malcolm
Humm said he anticipated
Moffett would be asked about
the name at the board meeting.
Work for Burnside after shaky start
• By Sam Coughlan
A POOR first day of their final
match has dented Burnside
Wests’ two-day title hopes – but
they remain in the box seat for
the trophy heading into the last
weekend of the season.
They will resume their match
against Sydenham trailing by 40
runs at the start of their second
innings, having failed to claim
points for the highest first-innings
score.
However, Burnside player-coach
Carl Huyser said an extended
second day, due to a wet ground
delaying the start of day one, is
likely to give them enough time to
do what they need to.
“It’s just about occupying
the crease and then building
partnerships, I think that’s going
to be the key.
“A couple of good partnerships
will be the main thing. We’ll
probably need to get about 60 or
65 overs to have a chance of still
bowling them out and winning
the game.”
Burnside are unlikely to need
a win to secure the trophy – they
are well ahead of second-place
Lancaster Park in the standings.
Park trail by 82 runs with four
wickets remaining in their first
innings against East Shirley, and
the only way they can secure
enough points to overtake
Burnside would need them to
for six runs.
claim a first-innings lead, bowl
Easts out quickly and then chase
down the required total without
losing a wicket.
Even then, a good batting effort
from Burnside is likely to give
them enough bonus points to be
un-catchable.
Huyser said some of Burnside’s
team might keep an eye on their
title rivals’ game.
“We’ll certainly at lunchtime
have a wee look.”
Both of the other matches –
Merivale-Papanui v St Albans
and Old Boys v Heathcote – were
unable to start on day one due to a
wet outfield but will get underway
this weekend.
In the women’s 50-over
competition, Lancaster Park will
host Sydenham at St Albans Park
in the final on Saturday.
Park won the T20 final earlier
this season against North West
and will be looking to complete
the double.
These teams have met seven
times this season, with Park
winning four and Sydenham two,
with last week’s clash abandoned.
AMAZING HEALTH MIRACLES
from the SILKWORM
Serrapeptase, an enzyme produced
in silkworms, may become one of
the most widely used natural health
solutions for its ability to replace most
anti-inflammatory drugs & bypass
operations. It is nature’s answer to pain,
chronic inflammation & clogged arteries.
Enzymes are essential for life. Constantly
working to build & regenerate the body,
they help digest food, break down
toxins & cleanse the blood, in addition
to thousands of other functions. A lack
of enzymes in the body leads to food
intolerances, allergies, digestive issues,
disease & poor health. Studies show
that an average 70-year-old has only 20
percent of the enzymes found in the body
of a 20-year-old.
Serrapeptase is a natural antiinflammatory
that can clean, clear &
reduce inflammation while dissolving
non-living tissue, including blood clots,
cysts, arterial plaque & mucus. One of its
significant benefits is its ability to reduce
pain.
The serrapeptase enzyme was first
found in the intestine of the silkworm
in the late 1960s. The silkworm uses it
to dissolve the hard cocoon, allowing
the moth to escape and digest the tough
mulberry leaves it feeds on. Serrapeptase
can now be produced commercially
by fermentation of the microorganism
Serriata E15. Doctors across Europe &
Asia prescribe it.
Over the last 40 years, clinical studies
have shown serrapeptase to have
remarkable benefits in many health
Serrapeptase, an enzyme first discovered in the silkworm, could become
one of the most widely used natural health remedies due to its ability to
potentially replace the majority of anti-inflammatory drugs & bypass
operations. Serrapeptase is a natural anti-inflammatory enzyme that
according to research can clean, clear & reduce inflammation while safely
dissolving non-living tissue such as blood clots, cysts, arterial plaque
& mucus. One of its major benefits is its ability to reduce pain & clear
conditions, including blocked arteries,
cardiovascular, arthritis, asthma, lung
conditions, pain, tumors, autoimmune
disease & more. In Germany, Dr. Hans
Nieper clinically researched serrapeptase
& found it could clear blocked arteries &
prevent the need for bypass operations.
U.K. pharmacist Dennis Gore talked on
BBC radio about his dramatic results
with serrapeptase. One case was a man
in his 60s who had been a heavy smoker
and was wheeled into his pharmacy.
He was breathless due to emphysema
& COPD & could hardly talk. He was
on antibiotics and oxygen and getting
nasty infections. Dennis prescribed
him serrapeptase. Three weeks later, the
man walked into his pharmacy with no
wheelchair & no breathlessness & said to
Dennis he was no longer on antibiotics
or oxygen cylinders & was feeling great.
Serrapeptase is a very safe supplement
&, according to researchers, can be used
with most medications. However, let
your doctor know as medications may
need to be reduced or stopped as their
need reduces.
CASHMERE Technical and Christchurch
United meet on Saturday to remember one
of New Zealand’s football greats in their
final pre-season match.
They will play for the annual Steve
Sumner Cup, commemorating the former
All Whites captain and his contribution to
football while raising funds for charity.
Sumner, a former United player who
won seven Chatham Cups and five league
titles with the side, died in 2017 from
prostate cancer. He led the All Whites
to their first ever World Cup in Spain in
1982.
United head coach Ryan Edwards said
it would be special to remember one of
the greatest footballers in the country’s
history.
“It’s a big thing for this club.
“Steve’s grandson, Beckett,
is playing in our 10th
grade team.
“And I actually played
football on a Wednesday
with his dad and Steve’s
son, Carlos. So there’s still
a lot of connection to the
club.”
Cashmere Technical
head coach Dan Schwarz
echoed that statement.
Dan
Schwarz
“It’s been something we’ve looked forward
to all pre-season, and it’s great to do
our little bit for prostate cancer,” he said.
Proceeds from the match will go to the
Prostate Cancer Foundation.
United won the cup last year, 3-1.
The match at Nga Puna Wai starts at
2.30pm, with the U17 and U20 teams from
the clubs playing at noon.
Riders eye milestone victory in 25th Le Race
THE CYCLING community will
be celebrating a special milestone
on Saturday when 600 riders
line up for the 25 th edition of the
Golden Homes Le Race.
Since its inception in 1999,
the 100km race from Cathedral
Square to Akaroa has featured
big names in the sport, as well
as some of the most eccentric
weekend warriors.
The tough climbs over Dyers
Pass, Gebbies Pass, Hilltop and
the Summit Rd over the years
have attracted some top fields,
and the Hall of Fame includes
a long list of world champions,
Olympic medallists and Commonwealth
Games winners like
Brian Fowler, Hayden Roulston
and Kate McIlroy.
Some of those competed in the
heyday of their careers, while
other young talents used Le Race
as a stepping stone to a professional
career on the cycling
world tour.
“Those names are a great
reflection of the high regard Le
Race is held in cycling circles,”
said race organiser Sheree
Stevens.
“It has been wonderful so
see those same young kids we
first met at the starting line in
Cathedral Square later pop up on
the podium in Europe or the US,
and of course makes us incredibly
proud.”
This year’s field will include
defending champions Sharlotte
Lucas and Jonty Harris, as well
as previous two-time winner
Daniel Whitehouse and Australian-turned-Kiwi
pro rider
Matilda Raynolds.
Stevens said her event has
faced the same challenges as
other sports events in recent
years and Le Race was virtually
on life support after the double
cancellation in 2020 and 2022
due to the pandemic.
“Other events organisers may
have pulled the pin, but this is
such a special race and we just
love our cycling community too
much to let this amazing event
die a quiet death. Not on my
watch,” said Stevens, who adds
that increased competition from
other events, notably mountainbike
competitions, has also
challenged the viability of the
Thursday March 21 2024 The Star
road race.
The race also conflicts with
Sail GP in Lyttelton on this
weekend.
Stevens is grateful for the New
Zealand community for reciprocating
her commitment to Le
Race by again signing up in large
numbers for the gruelling climbs
over the Port Hills.
“That’s what keeps us all
coming back, their love for this
special event. And the big smiles
on everyone’s faces when they
share their battle stories over a
beer in Akaroa.”
PAK’nSAVE Papanui now open to public
FOODSTUFFS South Island, the
New Zealand owned co-operative
behind Pak’n Save, New World
and Four Square stores across the
South Island, is proud to announce
the opening of PAK’nSAVE
Papanui.
The highly-anticipated store
opening marks a significant
milestone for the co-op as the first
PAK’nSAVE store that’s opened
in Canterbury since the opening
of PAK’nSAVE Rangiora in
September 2015.
Spanning a site of 6,260 square
metres, which is just under the
size of a rugby field, PAK’nSAVE
Papanui is conveniently located on
the corner of Northcote Road and
Main North Road in town. The
new store showcases Foodstuffs’
commitment to providing
accessible and affordable groceries
to communities right across New
Zealand.
PAK’nSAVE Papanui owner
operators Bryan Walker and
Lucy Boock are delighted to be
continuing to serve their local
community in a brand-new store
after making the move across from
their former store, PAK’nSAVE
Northlands.
The new store will provide 100
additional roles, on top of the 210
positions that have been filled
by team members who’ve been
brought over from their former
store, PAK’nSAVE Northlands.
Foodstuffs South Island
Chief Executive Mary Devine
said the co-op has made a $40
million investment to bring this
state-of-the-art supermarket
to the community, while
offering customers a spacious
and contemporary shopping
experience.
“PAK’nSAVE Papanui offers a
great shopping experience, and
it also shows our commitment to
community of Papanui,” Devine
says.
“The store’s design incorporates
the latest sustainability
innovations and features ample
into the store, enhancing the
fresh food offerings in produce,
seafood, and butchery. There’s
also 22 self-service checkouts, and
90 SHOP’nGO scanners to save
customers time and money as they
can scan and pack their groceries
as they shop.”
The new store’s design and
sustainability innovations include:
solar panels, EV charging ,
natural light coming into the store,
ample cycle parking, a dedicated
Click & Collect space and adjacent
The store is also equipped to
continuously trade for three days
in the event of an emergency or
natural disaster and includes water
storage and a generator on-site to
ensure customers can continue
to get the food and essentials they
need.
Owner operators Bryan Walker
and Lucy Boock have a big focus
on sustainability instore and in
their community. In the lead
up to the closure of their former
PAK’nSAVE Northlands store,
they got in touch with their food
rescue partner, Kairos Food
Rescue, to provide them with
the opportunity to repurpose
anything they need from the store
before it’s stripped, such as the
reach truck, shelving, lockers and
safety tools.
Following PAK’nSAVE
Northland’s last day of trade,
surplus produce will be
redistributed to local food rescue
organisation, Satisfy Food Rescue,
to help support people in the
community in need. Even the
uniforms from their previous store
will be worn by team members at
the new store.
Bryan and Lucy bring a wealth
of experience to the brand-new
PAK’nSAVE Papanui. Lucy is a
third-generation grocer and began
her journey with the co-op while
still at school, packing groceries
at her parents’ store, New World
Gardens, in Dunedin. Bryan has
been in the industry for 26 years,
leaving school at the age of 16 to
work at New World Mosgiel as
a grocery assistant, and working
GARDENING 25
Plum trees need a pollinator
PLUMS ARE so easy to grow and,
when planted with the correct
pollinator, will fruit heavily after
only a few years.
Plums have become more
popular in the past few years with
home gardeners growing more of
their own fruit.
Plum trees grow between 3-4m
high depending on the variety
chosen and how they are pruned.
The three main types flower and
fruit differently. The European
plum, Prunus domestica, flowers
in late September on spurs.
European plums generally have
smaller, rounder oval fruit which
need pollinating. The japanese
plum, Prunus salicinas, flowers in
early September on last season’s
new wood. It has large, often
pointed fruit. The cherry plums,
which are Prunus cerasifera, are a
cross between the European and
Japanese plums. They flower in
late winter.
Plums prefer a sunny spot with
good drainage. Spring frosts can
be a problem if the plant is flowering
at the time. Water the plant
well during dry periods, fertilise
in early and late spring.
Plums are vigorous growers so
should be pruned for shape and
to keep control of the plant. Thin
out large lateral growths, remove
diseased dead branches; thin the
tree out to allow light in to promote
spur formation.
FRESH: Plums are popular with children but watch out the birds don’t get them first.
Pruning should be done after
harvest to prevent disease. Brown
rot is the main disease that affects
plums, along with the odd insect.
Birds are also a pest.
Spray with copper and oil three
times in winter, then with mavrik
or carbaryl and copper monthly
while the tree is in leaf. Watch out
for birds as they love plums too.
Most plum trees need a
pollinator to ensure fruit set.
Even self-fertile plants will benefit
from a companion plant. Some
varieties pollinate lots of other
varieties.
You can even buy trees with
pollinators on them. Two or three
varieties are grafted on to a tree so
you get two to three types of plum
on the one tree, which saves room
and the plums get pollinated
properly.
Plums taste best when they are
picked ripe from the tree, some
cherry plums and plum santa rosa
are the only self-fertile varieties
available.
Here are some popular varieties.
Cherry plums black doris –
great all purpose, medium-sized,
black-purple skinned, deep red
sweet juicy fruit. Billington or
omega helps with pollination.
Billington – Cross between
sultan and the japanese plum.
Ripens early December-January
and has medium-sized, redskinned,
red flesh, juicy fruit.
Omega – Red flesh with greenred
speckled skin. This plum is
juicy, sweet and self-fertile. A
good all-round plum.
Japanese plums – These plums
are heavier croppers and more
vigorous growing.
Burbank – Has heavy crops of
red fruit with yellow flesh. It is
self-fertile.
Elephant heart – Is a large plum
with reddish-purple skin and
sweet red flesh. Its pollinator is
santa rosa.
Santa Rosa – Is a large, deep
purple plum with pink-yellow
flesh. It is self-fertile and has
sweet fruit.
Sultan – Is a popular variety
with large red fruit covering the
tree. Its pollinator is omega.
Satsuma – Has large, round,
dark red fruit and is pollinated by
santa rosa.
Greengage – Is a popular plum
producing greenish-yellow fruit
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
Apartments’
sign-off
this week
• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
Mr Garth, who has b en a
“Doing a l thi stuff and
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
The bylaw comes as an increasing
In the past year, the district
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Helping mums
who need it most
• By Sasha Watson
HAVING A baby can be scary
– especially if you’re on your
own.
That’s why Mickenzi Askin
started making baby bundle
packs to donate to mums in
need of some help.
The packs contain
blankets, lotions,
lip balms, toys,
creams, clothing,
bottles and
more.
“Each pack
is different but
all are designed
for mums to be
or struggling
mums with
newborns to
one-year-olds. The only thing
we ask is wha the
gender is as we
don’t get enough
gender neutral
items.
“They’re
based on who
needs it most and
if we don’t
have any
available,
we
also
offer
other
help
like
referrals
to organisations
who can give
the right support.
“In today’s
world,
the need
to support
women,
www.starnews.co.nz
especially if pregnant, has
grown. It makes me happy
knowing the help I once
received is being passed on,”
said Askin.
She became pregnant at age
17 with her daughter, Scarlett,
who is now eight-and-a-half.
“I was still in school so I
lost a lot o friends, had
no money and, a that
time, there was not a
lot of help ou there
for young mums.
Askin and her
friend Amber
packs. She is
Speed drop
as a result of
Streets for
People trial
• By Sasha Watson
PEOPLE ARE driving slower on
Hampshire S than they used to,
since the installation of speed
bumps and bollards.
Data from the Streets For People
Aranui trial have shown an average
speed drop of 13km/h along the
street, a meeting has heard.
The meeting last week was to
hear community feedback to the
trial. It was attended by residents,
students, city councillors, city
council staff and the Aranui
Community Trust.
The 50km/h speed limit on
Hampshire St has not changed.
Burwood Ward city councillor
Kelly Barber told Pegasus Post
the average speed of 85 per
cent of drivers travelling down
Hampshire St was 52.9km/h,
pretrial.
“The average speed has dropped
to 40km/h now. The average of all
travelling vehicles was 46.3km/h
pretrial and is now 33.7 km/h.
This means the project is working,”
he said.
