Thursday March 21 2024 The Star HERITAGE-LISTED convent buildings that once housed New Zealand’s only female Anglican order have sold to a Singaporean investor for $1.7 million. The complex, built for the Sisters of the Community of the Sacred Name in the late 19th century, is on St Asaph St. Stuff reported the property was put up for sale earlier this year by local charity the Home and Family Society, which took it over in as-is condition from the Anglican sisters in 2018. The deal was brokered by Heritage New Zealand to save the buildings from demolition. The society spent almost $3m repairing and restoring the quake-damaged buildings. The project was helped by a $950,000 city council heritage grant, $800,000 of lottery money, a Heritage New Zealand grant and other donations. The unidentified buyer is still deciding on his plans for the property. • By Daniel Alvey SIXTY-SIX YEARS after her grandmother claimed the title, Paige Sullivan has won the Miss Canterbury title. “I felt sick I was so nervous. I really didn’t expect to be at that point and I honestly still don’t believe it,” she said. It was Sullivan’s first beauty pageant. “It was really incredible, all of the girls were amazing and so kind . . . the whole process from start to finish was really empowering.” Sullivan said being Miss Canterbury was more than just being “pretty”, compared to when her grandmother Dianna McFarlane competed in 1958. “I found out that half of the score is made up of community work, and I thought I was already doing that anyway, and it’s really aligned with me.” Sullivan also won best in interview, Miss Charity and Miss Positivity. As part of the competition, she ran a fashion show and raised $9000 for the I Am Hope charity, which helps youth receive mental health counselling and other support. LEGACY: Miss Canterbury Paige Sullivan’s grandmother, Dianna McFarlane, won the competition in 1958. “I’m really proud of that and I think it will make a difference for the organisation as well,” she said. Sullivan said she is likely to enter Miss New Zealand next year. NEWS 3 In Brief No public showing for Goldie paintings Six artworks by Charles Goldie will no longer be exhibited in Christchurch before they are sold at auction in Auckland on Monday. Art + Object director of art Ben Plumby said they were unable to find a suitable location for the exhibit. The artworks were owned by late Mainfreight co-founder Neil Graham. New sites added to historic place listings A Futuro House and the cemetery where suffragist Kate Sheppard is buried have been awarded heritage status. Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga has moved to list the rare UFOshaped house in Ohoka as a category 1 historic place. Only about 100 of the architectural oddities were ever made, with 12 of those in New Zealand. Developed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen, they were intended to be easy-to-relocate ski huts. Addington Cemetery has also been listed as a category 1 historic place. Established in 1859, it is the final resting place of prominent Cantabrians like suffragist Kate Sheppard, members of the Deans family, former Christchurch mayor Tommy Taylor and wealthy philanthropist Allan McLean. 4WD access to Greenpark Sands to be restricted Extensive damage to parts of Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere shoreline by 4WD vehicles has forced the Selwyn District Council to restrict access. Gates will be installed to stop vehicles entering Greenpark Sands. The sands run around the 13km of the shore of the lake, from the LII River to the Halswell River. The gates will be permanently locked to the general public from August 1 to February 28. From March 1 to July 31, legitimate vehicle users may request a combination lock code for the gate from Fish & Game. The permanent closure lines up with the breeding season for the banded dotterel, while the open season is primarily to allow duck hunters access.
