Boost for new Edgeware Pool

CONSTRUCTION of the new 

Edgeware pool is a step closer. 

The Waipapa Papanui-Innes- 

Central Community Board 

last week approved a grant of 

$41,000 from the Government’s 

‘Better Off’ funding. 

The grant will go to St Albans 

Pavilion and Pool Incorporated 

towards the compliance, 

planning and contract costs 

associated with construction of 

the pool. 

It is hoped construction 

on the former pool site on 

Edgeware Rd will start 

in October.

boost”.

it all goes to plan, shovels will be 

ready to go this year.” 

While SAPP has already 

obtained resource consent 

from the city council to build 

the pool, it needed to lodge an 

application with Environment 

Canterbury, to comply with 

Land Water Regional Plan 

legislative changes, which it did 

on Friday. 

“We are hoping to put the 

building consent to the city 

council in the coming weeks/ 

months,” O’Keefe said. 

So far, $3,450,000 has been 

raised for the rebuilding of the 

pool, but this funding has been 

held for the actual construction, 

O’Keefe said. 

The city council provided a 

grant of $3 million and a further 

$300,000 has been secured from 

the Lotteries Grants Board. 

The pool was built and run 

by the St Albans community 

in 1934, but during the early 

2000s, the city council took over 

ownership and in 2006, closed 

and demolished the pool. 

O’Keefe said there were 

outcries from the residents at 

the time, as they didn’t want to 

lose it. 

“We want to provide children 

easy access to water and build a 

facility that will strengthen the 

well-being of our community by 

providing a space which meets 

family, cultural, recreational 

and social needs. 

“The community board has 

always been supportive of the 

project. There was some opposition 

to the grant but it was 

approved by a vote of seven to 

two. 

“I think the opposition was 

because they wanted to know 

we could achieve the requirements 

and we have mostly.” 

O’Keefe, who lives in 

Edgeware and about 300m 

from the pool site, said she is 

looking forward to walking to 

the pool with her towel over her 

shoulder.

Helping mums who need it most

HAVING A baby can be scary – 

especially if you’re on your own. 

That’s why Mickenzi Askin 

started making baby bundle 

packs to donate to mums in need 

of some help. 

The packs contain blankets, 

lotions, lip balms, toys, creams, 

clothing, bottles and more. 

“Each pack is different but all 

are designed for mums to be or 

struggling mums with newborns 

to one-year-olds. The only thing 

we ask is what the gender is as we 

don’t get enough gender neutral 

items. 

“They’re based on who needs 

it most and if we don’t have any 

available, we also offer other help 

like referrals to organisations 

who can give the right support. 

“In today’s world, the need 

to support women, especially if 

pregnant, has grown. It makes 

me happy knowing the help I 

once received is being passed 

on,” said Askin. 

She became pregnant at age 17 

with her daughter, Scarlett, who 

is now eight-and-a-half. 

“I was still in school so I lost a 

lot of friends, had no money and, 

at that time, there was not a lot of 

help out there for young mums. 

Askin and her friend Amber 

Braxton make up the packs. She 

is helping Braxton through her 

first pregnancy. 

Said Askin: “With Madeline, 

who is five-an-a-half, my second 

pregnancy, I had a partner 

who wasn’t physically there so 

I basically raised my children 

alone. 

“I also wasn’t producing any 

milk so a stranger donated theirs 

to the hospital. 

“They’ll never know how much 

I needed that and I can’t ever 

thank them. So I wanted to 

give back because I know how 

much it’s needed.” 

Askin knows situations 

change all the time, having 

made a “quick move” from 

Geraldine to the city about 

five years ago. She says that is 

often when new mums need 

help. 

“I moved

anything 

but my 

children

nana’s 

house. 

“I ran to St Vinnies in 

Hornby and said to the 

ladies there: ‘I really need 

some help’. 

“They were about five 

minutes from closing the shop 

but I explained my situation 

and they stayed to help

clothing and 

much more.

RAILWAY CROSSING 

UPGRADES TO START 

Work on two Redwood 

railway crossing upgrades will 

start next week as 

part of the Northern Line 

cycleway extension. The 

Tuckers Rd railway 

crossing upgrade will 

start on Sunday and be 

completed by next Thursday, 

while work on the Sturrocks 

Rd railway crossing will 

start on Tuesday and be 

finished by April 5. The work 

includes installing track 

matting, shaping the ballast, 

and formation renewals 

beneath the crossings. Road 

closures are expected and 

pedestrian and cyclist access 

will be via an escorted 

crossing.

will have to wait until next 

month to see if they have 

made the New Zealand 

team for the junior world 

championships in Peru in 

August. 

Christchurch Boys’ High 

School student Cooper 

Wightman, 16, and recent 

St Thomas’ alumnus Daniel 

Prescott, 17, are among seven 

runners who have achieved 

the qualifying time for the 

1500m event, but only two 

can be selected. 

The pair, who both run 

for the Selwyn Athletic 

Club, went head-to-head at 

the national track and field 

championships over the 

weekend. 

Wightman finished second 

in a personal-best time of 

3min 47.11sec, and Prescott 

was fourth 3sec behind 

Wightman. 

But, even if selected, 

Prescott said he is unlikely to 

be able to travel to Lima due 

to upcoming United States 

college commitments. 

He has also already been 

selected to represent New 

Zealand at the world crosscountry 

championships 

in Serbia which start next 

Saturday. 

“I’ll just be focusing on 

that now,” he said. 

Prescott is a member of 

the six-strong New Zealand 

team who will run in the 

under-20 race – and the only 

one from the South Island. 

“It’s going to be a good 

international experience,” he 

said. 

He said the 

competition in the 

race will be fierce. 

“There’s a lot of 

quick people from, 

for example, Africa. 

And usually they 

always go out and 

they’re the ones that 

are leading, so I’ll 

just be doing the 

best I can, I guess. 

“I’ll see what I can do.” 

Prescott has “three or 

four” US college running 

scholarship offers on the 

table for the school year 

starting in August, but hasn’t 

decided where he’ll go yet. 

His potential college 

commitments mean he 

is unlikely to be able to 

represent New Zealand at the 

junior world championships 

if selected. 

“I was hoping to (be able 

to travel to Peru), but I’ll 

have my commitments to US 

colleges,” he said. 

“But just to know that I’d 

be selected, if selected, would

is looking forward to 

potentially getting the 

opportunity. 

“He’s got to the point 

where, I think, he’s keen to 

go and measure himself up 

against the best under-20s 

in the world. I’m sure he will 

have another opportunity 

in a couple of years time but 

you never know the sorts of 

things that life might throw 

up.”

Light, tasty salad that’s easy to make 

NERYS WHELAN is a Kiwi 

chef with a passion for good food 

and while she concentrates on 

keto recipes, some like this Thai 

beef salad work for everyone. It 

is a great light, tasty option that 

is easily whipped up with a few 

pantry basics and cooked on the 

barbecue. It also makes the more 

expensive cut of meat go further. 

Thai beef salad 

Makes 4 

GF/SF/DF/EF 

For the zesty Thai dressing: 

1 Tbsp fresh ginger, finely grated 

½-1 chilli, seeds discarded, finely 

chopped 

1 clove garlic, crushed 

1 Tbsp fish sauce 

1 lime, zest and juice 

1 tsp rice wine vinegar or apple 

cider vinegar 

30g Allulose (or another easy 

dissolving sweetener) 

1 tsp Dijon mustard 

2 Tbsp sesame oil 

2 Tbsp fresh coriander, finely 

sliced 

½ tsp salt 

For the salad: 

400g scotch fillet steak, left 

covered at room temperature for 

30 minutes prior 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

1 tsp salt 

1 tsp cracked black pepper 

120g mesclun 

50g mung beans or bean sprouts 

8 cherry tomatoes, quartered 

¼ small red onion, finely sliced 

¼ cucumber, diced 

2 Tbsp fresh coriander, roughly 

chopped 

1 Tbsp fresh mint, roughly 

chopped 

30g peanuts, chopped 

Method: 

• First, make the dressing by 

putting everything in a jar and 

shaking to combine or whisk 

together in a bowl. You can make 

a larger batch of this and leave it 

in the fridge for a ready-made, 

light and fresh salad dressing, just 

omit the coriander so it doesn’t 

discolour. 

• Heat a heavy-based frying pan 

over a high heat. 

• Rub the steak with the oil, 

salt and pepper. Once the pan is 

very hot, add steak and cook to 

your liking. Once steak is cooked, 

remove from pan and let it rest 

while you prepare the rest of the 

salad. 

• On a large serving platter, 

scatter the mesclun on the bottom, 

then arrange the mung beans, 

cherry tomatoes, red onion, 

cucumber and herbs over the top. 

• Once the steak has rested for at 

least 5 minutes, slice it and pat dry 

any juices with a paper towel. 

• Lay the steak on top of the 

salad, sprinkle over the eanuts, 

season lightly with salt and pepper, 

then drizzle over about half of the 

dressing and serve. 

Nutrition note: Apple cider 

vinegar is believed to help 

moderate blood sugar levels, as 

well as lower cholesterol.

performing motor, but livelier

over hilly terrain when the

A 245Nm war chest of torque at 

3600rpm doesn’t really get the job 

done that convincingly. Pleasantly 

smooth and responsive on flatter 

going, there is enough thrust to 

safely waft past slower moving 

traffic. 

A well resolved eight-speed 

sport mode constant variable 

transmission is one of Mitsubishi’s 

best. Step shift control changes 

do a fine job of mimicking a 

conventional automatic, with 

few slurring gear shifts that were 

once an undesirable trait of these 

transmissions. 

A generously proportioned 

passenger compartment earns 

top marks for spaciousness, 

practicality and being a relaxing 

long distance cruiser. Upping the 

comfort ante on the test vehicle 

were heated seats, three-zone 

automatic climate control, and 

rear door sunshades. 

A 12.3-inch full digital driver 

display is Mitsubishi’s first fullscreen, 

full-colour liquid crystal 

display, projecting a variety of 

information on to a large screen 

with exceptional clarity. A 

customisation function enables a 

variety of information to be easily 

combined and displayed. 

The test vehicle’s six drive 

modes are accessed via a centre 

console mounted selector, and 

range from normal to snow, and 

almost everything in-between. 

The suspension tune is very 

much in-tune with our often 

exacting driving conditions 

and topography. It makes an 

immediate impression with 

its strong road holding, even 

when you quicken the pace over 

demanding undulating roads. 

While the striking 20-inch 

alloys make a powerful visual 

statement, the ride quality suffers, 

with more suspension noise at 

low speeds over high frequency 

bumps found on our urban roads.
